Pole saw safety warnings

  • Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain or saw blade when the pole saw is operating. Before you start the machine, make sure the saw chain or blade is not contacting anything. A moment of inattention while operating the machine may result in injury to yourself or others.
  • Always use two hands when operating the pole saw. Hold the machine with both hands to avoid loss of control.
    • To reduce the risk of electrocution, never use the pole saw near any electrical power lines. Contact with or use near power lines may cause serious injury or electric shock resulting in death.
  • Hold the pole saw by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the saw chain or blade may contact hidden wiring. Saw chains or blades contacting a "live" wire may make exposed metal parts of the machine "live" and could give the operator an electric shock.
  • Wear safety glasses and ear protection. Further protective equipment for hands and feet is recommended. Adequate protective clothing will reduce personal injury by flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain or blade.
    • Always use head protection when operating the pole saw overhead. Falling debris can result in serious personal injury.
    • Always keep proper footing and operate the pole saw only when standing on the ground. Slippery or unstable surfaces may cause a loss of balance or control of the machine.

  • Do not operate a pole saw in a tree. Operation of a pole saw while up in a tree may result in personal injury.

  • Keep all power cords and cables away from cutting area. Power cords or cables may be hidden in trees and can be accidentally cut by the blade.
  • Do not use the pole saw in bad weather conditions, especially when there is a risk of lightning. This decreases the risk of being struck by lightning.
  • When cutting a limb that is under tension, be alert for spring back. When the tension in the wood fibres is released, the spring loaded limb may strike the operator and/or throw the machine out of control.
  • Use extreme caution when cutting brush and saplings. The slender material may catch the saw chain or blade and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.
  • Carry the pole saw by the handles with the machine switched off, taking care not to operate any power switch and with the blade away from your body. Proper carrying of the machine will reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving saw chain or blade.
  • When transporting or storing the pole saw, always fit the guide bar or blade cover. Proper handling of the machine will reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving saw chain or blade.
  • When clearing jammed material, storing or servicing the pole saw, make sure the switch is off and the battery pack is removed. Unexpected actuation of the machine while clearing jammed material or servicing may result in serious personal injury.
  • Follow instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning and changing accessories. Improperly tensioned or lubricated chain may either break or increase the chance for kickback.
  • Cut wood only. Do not use pole saw for purposes not intended. For example: do not use the machine for cutting plastic, metal, masonry or non-wood building materials. Use of the machine for operations different than intended could result in a hazardous situation.

Causes and operator prevention of kickback:

Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain or circular saw blade in the cut.

Tip contact in some cases may cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back and affecting safe control of the pole saw.

Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly backwards.

Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the pole saw which could result in serious personal injury. As a pole saw user, you should take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.

Kickback is the result of tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below:

  • Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and fingers encircling the pole saw handles, with both hands on the machine and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken. Do not let go of the machine.
  • Do not overreach. This helps prevent unintended tip contact and enables better control of the machine in unexpected situations.
  • Only use replacement guide bars, saw chains or blades specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement bars, chains or blades may cause chain breakage and/or kickback.
  • Follow the manufacturer's sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain or saw blade. Decreasing the depth gauge height can lead to increased kickback.

HUSQVARNA DP110 - To operate the product - 5

WARNING: Never activate the power trigger without having the cutting attachment in full view.

  • Hold the product as close to your body as possible to get the best balance.
  • Make sure that the tip does not touch the ground.
  • Do not rush the work, but work steadily until all the branches have been cut back cleanly.
  • Release the power trigger after each working operation. Long periods at full speed without any load on the motor can cause serious motor damage.

• Always work at full speed.
- Observe great care when working close to overhead power lines. Falling branches can result in short-circuiting.
- Whenever possible position yourself so that you can make the cut at right angles to the branch. (Fig. 32)
- Do not work with the shaft held straight out in front of you (like a fishing rod) as this increases the apparent weight of the cutting attachment. (Fig. 33)
- Cut large branches in sections so that you have better control over where they fall. (Fig. 34)
- Never cut through the swelling at the root of the branch as this will slow down healing and increase the risk of fungal attack. (Fig. 35)
- Use the stop at the base of the cutting head to provide support during cutting. This will help prevent the cutting attachment from "jumping" on the branch. (Fig. 36)
- Make an initial cut on the underside of the branch before cutting through the branch. This will prevent tearing of the bark, which could lead to slow healing and cause permanent damage to the tree. The cut should not be deeper than 1/3 of the branch thickness to prevent jamming. Keep the chain running while you withdraw the cutting attachment from the branch to prevent it jamming. (Fig. 37)
- Use the harness to support the weight of the machine and make it easier to handle.
- Make sure you have a firm footing and that you can work without being hampered by branches, stones and trees.

To sharpen the saw chain

Information about the guide bar and saw chain

Replace a worn or damaged guide bar or saw chain with the guide bar and saw chain combinations that we recommend. This is important in order to keep the safety functions of the cutting equipment. Refer to Accessories on page 19, for a list of replacement bar and chain combinations that we recommend.

- Length, in/cm.

(Fig. 48)

• Number of teeth on bar tip sprocket (T).

(Fig. 49)

- Chain pitch, in. The distance between the drive links of the saw chain must align with the distance of the teeth on the bar tip sprocket and drive sprocket.

(Fig. 50)

- Number of drive links. The number of drive links is decided by the length of the bar, the chain pitch and the number of teeth on the bar tip sprocket.

(Fig. 51)

- Bar groove width, in/mm. The groove in the guide bar must align with the width of the chain drive links.

(Fig. 52)

- Chain oil hole and hole for chain tensioner. The guide bar must align with product.

(Fig. 53)

- Drive link width, in/mm.

(Fig. 54)

General information about how to sharpen the cutting teeth

Do not use a blunt saw chain. If the saw chain is blunt, you must apply more pressure to push the guide bar through the wood. If the saw chain is very blunt, there will be no wood chips but sawdust.

A sharp saw chain eats through the wood and the wood chips becomes long and thick.

The cutting tooth (A) and the depth gauge (B) together makes the cutting part of the saw chain, the cutter. The difference in height between the two gives the cutting depth (depth gauge setting).

(Fig. 55)

When you sharpen a cutting tooth, think about the following:

- Filing angle.

(Fig. 56)

- Cutting angle.

(Fig. 57)

- File position.

(Fig. 58)

- Round file diameter.

(Fig. 59)

It is not easy to sharpen a saw chain correctly without the correct equipment. Use the recommended file gauge. This will help you to keep maximum cutting performance and the kickback risk at a minimum.

HUSQVARNA DP110 - General information about how to sharpen the cutting teeth - 1

WARNING: The risk of kickback increases a lot if you do not follow the sharpening instructions.

Note: See Technical data on page 19 for information about sharpening of the saw chain.

To sharpen the cutting teeth

  1. Use a round file and a file gauge to sharpen the cutting teeth. (Fig. 60)
Note: See Technical data on page 19 for information about which file and gauge that we recommend for your saw chain.
  2. Make sure that the saw chain has the correct tension. A saw chain without the correct tension moves from side to side. This does not make it easy to sharpen the saw chain. See To adjust the chain tension on page 18 for instructions. (Fig. 61)
  3. Move the file from the inner side of the cutting teeth and out. Decrease the pressure on the pull stroke. (Fig. 62)
  4. Remove filing material on all teeth on one side first.
  5. Turn the product around and remove filing material on the other side.
  6. Make sure that the all cutting teeth become the same length when you remove filing material.
  7. The saw chain is worn out when the cutting teeth is decreased to 4 mm (0.16"). Replace the saw chain. (Fig. 39)

General information about how to adjust the depth gauge setting

The depth gauge setting (C) decreases when you sharpen the cutting tooth (A). To keep maximum cutting performance you must remove filing material from the depth gauge (B) to receive the recommended depth gauge setting. See Technical data on page 19 for instructions about how to receive the correct depth gauge setting for your saw chain.

(Fig. 63)

HUSQVARNA DP110 - General information about how to adjust the depth gauge setting - 1

WARNING: The risk of kickback increases if the depth gauge setting is too large!

To adjust the depth gauge setting

Before you adjust the depth gauge setting or sharpen the cutting teeth, See To sharpen the cutting teeth on page 17, for instructions. We recommend you to adjust the depth gauge setting after each third operation that you sharpen the cutting teeth.

Note: This recommendation applies only if the length of the cutting teeth does not decrease too much.

We recommend that you use our depth gauge tool to receive the correct depth gauge setting and bevel for the depth gauge.

(Fig. 64)

  1. Use a flat file and a depth gauge tool to adjust the depth gauge setting. Only use the recommended depth gauge tool to receive the correct depth gauge setting and bevel for the depth gauge.
  2. Put the depth gauge tool on the saw chain.

Note: See the package of the depth gauge tool for more information about how to use the tool.

  1. Use the flat file to remove the part of the depth gauge that extends through the depth gauge tool. (Fig. 65)

Note: The depth gauge setting is correct when you do not feel resistance as you move the file along the depth gauge tool.

To adjust the chain tension

HUSQVARNA DP110 - To adjust the chain tension - 1

WARNING: A saw chain that has incorrect tension can derail from the guide bar and cause serious injury or death.

A saw chain becomes longer when it is used. Adjust the saw chain regularly.

  1. Loosen the locking knob that holds the cover and chain brake. (Fig. 66)
  2. Lift the front of the guide bar and turn the chain tensioning screw. Use the screwdriver side of the combination tool. (Fig. 26)
  3. Tighten the saw chain until it is tight against the guide bar but can move easily.
  4. Tighten the locking knob and lift the front of the guide bar at the same time. (Fig. 67)
  5. Make sure that you can pull the saw chain around freely by hand and that it does not hang from the guide bar. (Fig. 27)

To lubricate cutting equipment

HUSQVARNA DP110 - To lubricate cutting equipment - 1

WARNING: Poor lubrication of cutting equipment may cause the chain to snap, which could lead to serious, even fatal injuries.

HUSQVARNA DP110 - To lubricate cutting equipment - 2

WARNING: Do not use waste oil! Waste oil is dangerous for persons, the product and for the environment.

Saw chain oil

For the position of the oil tank cap, refer to Attachment overview on page 10.

  • Use saw chain oil of good adherence to the saw chain. The saw chain oil must keep its viscosity in all weather, for example, during hot summer or cold winter.
  • Use Husqvarna chain oil for maximum saw chain life and to keep environmental damage to a minimum. If Husqvarna saw chain oil is not available, use a standard saw chain oil.
  • In areas where oil for lubrication of saw chains is not available, use EP 90 transmission oil.
  • Make sure that the lubrication of the saw chain operates correctly. Fill with saw chain oil and examine the saw chain lubrication if it is necessary.
  • Do a check of oil level in the oil tank regularly to prevent damage to the saw chain and the guide bar.

To to a check of the chain lubrication

- Examine the chain lubrication regularly. Aim the front of the bar at a surface with a light color, approximately 20 cm (8 inches) away. If the chain lubrication operates correctly, you see a line of oil on the surface after 1 minute. (Fig. 68)

To do a check if lubrication does not work

  1. Check that the oil channel in the bar is not obstructed. Clean if necessary. (Fig. 69)
  2. Check that the oil channel in the gear housing is clean. Clean if necessary.
  3. Check that the bar tip sprocket turns freely. If the chain lubrication system is still not working after carrying out the above checks you should contact your service workshop. (Fig. 70)
