How to start the HiKOKI ML34SR lawn mower?

To start, hold down the start button, then pull the safety handle towards the handlebar and hold it. Then release the start button. The mower only starts on a flat surface and short grass.

How to adjust the cutting height?

Make sure the engine is stopped and the blade is stationary. Press and hold the unlock lever on the side. Push the lever forward for a lower cut (min 2.8 cm) or backward for a higher cut (max 6.8 cm). Release the lever and lock it into the desired position.

How to empty the grass collection bag?

Stop the engine and wait for the blade to stop. Lift the deflector flap, unhook the collection bag and remove it. Empty it, then replace it by hooking it onto the supports under the flap.

What are the essential safety precautions?

Always unplug before maintenance. Do not mow on wet grass or in the rain. Wear closed-toe shoes and safety glasses. Keep children and animals away. Never lift the mower with the engine running.

How to maintain the blade?

Unplug the appliance. Wear work gloves. Regularly check the blade for wear. For sharpening or replacement, contact a HiKOKI authorized service center. The tightening torque for the blade screw is 15 Nm +5.

What if the mower does not start?

First check the power supply (fuses, extension cable). If the appliance cable is damaged, contact HiKOKI customer service. Make sure the blade is not blocked and the mower is on short grass.

How to store the mower?

Unplug. Fold the handlebar for compact storage. Clean the appliance with a brush (no water). Store in a dry place, out of reach of children.

Does the warranty apply for professional use?

No. The warranty is valid only for private use in accordance with the instructions. Unauthorized repairs or non-compliant use (parks, sports fields, agriculture) void the warranty.

How to clean under the mower?

Unplug. Use a brush or cloth to remove grass and dirt. Never use pressurized water, as it could damage the motor and switch.

The bag does not fill properly, what to do?

Check that the grass is not too wet. Clean the bag grid and the discharge channel. Make sure the blade is sharp. If necessary, adjust to a higher cutting height.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This document describes the electric lawn mower with catcher. ML40SR is also suitable for mulching.

Intended use

This appliance is intended for mowing lawns in the private sector.

Any other use is deemed as being not in accordance with its intended use.

Possible misuse

■ This lawn mower is not intended for use in public grounds, parks, sporting arenas as well as in agriculture and forestry

■ The fitted safety devices must not be removed or bypassed, e.g. by tying the safety bar to the handle bar

■ Do not use the mower during rain and/or on a wet lawn

■ The mower must not be used commercially

Electrical safety

Danger from electric current!

Danger from contact with live parts! Immediately disconnect the plug from the mains if the extension lead is damaged or severed!

■ The domestic mains voltage must match the mains voltage specifications in the technical data; do not use any other supply voltage.
■ Use only extension leads designed for use outdoors - minimum cross-section 1.5 mm ^4 .
■ Damaged or brittle extension leads must not be used.
■ Always check the condition of your extension lead before operating the machine.
■ Always use the special cable strain relief for the extension lead.
■ Always keep cables out of the cutting area and routed away from the machine.
■ Never run over the extension lead with the lawn mower.
■ Protect the machine against moisture.

Safety instructions for operation

CAUTION!

Danger - risk of injury!

Unintentional start-up can lead to severe injuries. To prevent injuries always unplugged after switching the mower off!

■ Do not operate the lawn mower with the blades locked. Doing so could burn out the motor.

After contact with foreign objects inspect the mower for damage. In case of serious damage take the mower to a HiKOKI service center.

■ Walk, never run.
■ Always be sure of your footing on slope or wet lawn.
■ Always unplug from the mains and wait until the machine has stopped:
in the event of faults or unusual vibration of the machine.
■ before releasing blockages.
■ before unclogging the machine.
■ after contact with foreign bodies.

■ The operator must take particular care when turning the lawn mower or pulling it towards himself.

■ Switch off the motor if it is necessary to cross an area other than the area to be cut.

■ Children, or other people who are not familiar with the operating instructions, are not allowed to use the machine

■ Observe local regulations regarding minimum age requirements for operating the machine.

■ The machine must not be operated if the operator is under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.

■ Prior to use check the mower and have the damaged parts replaced

■ Before using, always visually inspect to see that the blades, blade bolts and cutter assembly are not worn or damaged.

■ Remove all foreign objects from the lawn prior to mowing

■ Wear suitable work clothing:

Long trousers
■ Firm and antislip footwear

■ Always ensure stability when working.
- Keep others away from dangerous areas.
- Keep body and clothing and extension leads away from cutting parts.
■ Work only when there is adequate daylight or artificial lighting. Avoid mowing in bad weather

■ Always push the mower forward, never move backwards
■ Never pull the mower toward the body
■ Do not mow over obstacles (e.g. branches, roots of trees).
■ Make sure the motor is stopped before you remove any cuttings.
■ Never lift or carry the mower while the motor is running
■ Never leave the mower unattended when it is ready for operation

■ Unauthorized modifications may impair the safety of your product and may result in increased noise and vibration.

■ Regularly inspect the supply cables. Do not connect damaged cables to the supply or touch a damaged cable before it is disconnected from the supply. A damaged cable can lead to contact with live parts. Beware electric shock hazard.
■ If the machine starts to vibrate abnormally, remove the plug.
■ Never touch the plug with wet hands.

ASSEMBLY

Assemble according to enclosed assembly instructions.

CAUTION!

The machine must not be put in operation before it has been assembled completely.

OPERATION

Adjusting the cutting height (1)

CAUTION!

Danger - risk of injury!

Adjust the cutting height only while motor is switched off and the cutting blade has stopped!

1. To unlock, press the lever to the side and hold (1).

For a short lawn slide the lever in the direction of the front wheel. Minimum step 1: 2.8 cm

For a longer lawn slide the lever in the direction of the rear wheel. Maximum step 6: 6.8 cm

1. Release the lever and slide it forward or backward until it engages in the desired step.

Handle bar adjustment (2)

1. Keep the buttons on the handle bars pressed (2a).
2. Adjust to the desired height (2b)
3. Release the buttons and engage the handle bar.

Level indicator (3)

The level indicator is pressed upwards by the air stream during mowing (3a). When the grass catcher is full, the level indicator rests against the catcher (3b). The grass catcher needs to be emptied.

Remove or replace the grass catcher only while the motor is switched off and the cutting blade has stopped.

1. Lift up the baffle plate (4a) and hang the grass catcher into the holders. (4b)

1. Lift the baffl e plate. (4a)
2. Unhook the grass catcher and remove it to the rear.
3. Empty grass catcher.
4. Lift up the baffle plate and hang the grass catcher back into the holders. (4b)

Plug into mains

1. Connect the connector of the extension lead conducting electricity to the switch/connector combination (8).
2. Secure machine connecting cable with cable strain relief (9).

The loop of the mains cable must be long enough for the cable strain relief to slide from one side to the other.

Switching on the motor (10)

Start the lawn mower only on level ground, and not in high grass. The ground must be free from foreign objects and body, such as stones. Do not lift or tilt the lawn mower to start it.

1. Keep the start button pressed (10a).
2. Pull the safety bar toward the handle bar and hold it there (10b).
3. Release the start button.

Switching off the motor

1. Release the safety bar.
2. Wait until the cutter blade stops.

Mulching with the mulching kit (only ML40SR)

In the case of mulching, the cut grass is not collected, but left on the lawn. The mulch protects the ground against drying out and provides it with nutrients.

The best results are obtained by cutting the grass regularly to a height of approx. 2 cm. Only young grass with soft leaf tissue rots quickly.

Grass height before mulching: max. 8 cm Grass height after mulching: min. 4 cm

Adapt walking pace to the mulching; do not walk too fast

Fitting the mulching kit

Danger - risk of injury!

Only fi t or remove the mulching kit with the motor switched off and the blade stationary.

1. Remove the grass catcher (4).
2. Lift the baffle and insert the mulching kit into the ejection channel (5).

The mulching kit must click into place (6).

If the mulching kit does not click into place, both the mulching kit and the blade may be damaged

Removing the mulching kit

1. Lift the baffl e plate and release the lock on the mulching kit (7a).
2. Pull out the mulching kit (7b).

WORKING INFORMATION

Observe the local regulations on operating lawn mowers.

• Keep others away from dangerous areas.
  ■ Use the mower only if visibility is good.
  ■ Guide the machine at walking pace.
  ■ Mow only with a sharp cutting blade.
  ■ Do not mow over obstacles (e.g. branches, roots of trees).
  ■ On sloping terrain, always mow across the slope. Do not mow uphill or downhill or on slopes where the inclination exceeds 20^
  ■ Added care must be taken on slopes when changing direction.
  ■ # Optimum operating time is obtained by frequent mowing of the lawn and maintaining a short-cut lawn.

Tips for mowing

• Maintain a constant cutting height 3–5 cm; do not shorten the grass to less than half its original height.
  ■ Do not overload the lawn mower! If the motor speed is greatly reduced due to long, heavy grass, raise the cutting height and mow several times.
  ■ Since wind and sun can dry out the lawn after mowing, mow the lawn in the late afternoon.

STORAGE

Fold the upper handle bar to save space during storage

■ Store the mower in a dry place and inaccessible to children and unauthorized persons.
■ Always unplug the machine from the mains for storage.

REPAIRS

■ Repairs must only be carried out at HiKOKI service centers or authorized specialist fi rms.
■ To avoid an imbalance the cutter unit and the retaining screw must only be replaced as a set.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE

CAUTION!

Always unplug from the mains before commencing any maintenance or preventive maintenance work!

Always wear work gloves when carrying out maintenance on the cutter blade!

Non-balanced cutter blades cause serious vibrations and damage the mower.

CAUTION!

Cutting blade and motor shaft may not be aligned if either is damaged!

■ Regularly check the grass catcher system for correct function and wear.
■ After mowing, clean the machine thoroughly with a brush or cloth. Dirt not removed from the underside of the machine may have a detrimental effect on its performance.
■ Do not hose down the mower with water! Water can damage the switch as well as the electric motor.
■ Regularly check the cutter blade for damage. Have the blunt or damaged cutter blades sharpened or replaced only

at an HiKOKI service center or authorized specialist firm. Resharpened cutter blades must be balanced. The tightening torque of the blade screw is 15 Nm + 5.

■ Ensure that all nuts, bolts and screws are tightened and that the machine is in a safe operational state.

After maintenance work on insulated parts (e.g. exchanging a blade), an insulation protection check must be carried out in accordance with VDE Guideline 701.

■ Let the motor cool down before storing the machine in a closed room.
■ Professional inspection is necessary:
■ After running onto an obstacle
■ When the motor is blocked
■ When the cutter blade is bent
■ When the motor shaft is bent

DISPOSAL

Do not dispose of worn-out machines or spent batteries (including rechargeable batteries) in domestic waste!

The packaging, machine and accessories are made from recyclable materials and must be disposed of accordingly.

WARRANTY

We will address claims for any defects in materials and workmanship during the statutory period of limitation by means of repairs or replacements of our choice. The period of limitation is governed by the laws of the country in which the machine was purchased.

Our warranty applies only if:

■ Efforts have been made to repair the machine

■ The operating instructions have been adhered to

Technical modifications have been made to the machine

■ Original replacement parts have been used

■ The machine has not been used for its intended purpose (for examples, used for commercial or communal applications)

The warranty does not cover:

■ Damage to paint work through normal use
■ Parts subject to wear as indicated in the replacement parts list

■ Combustion motors - these are covered by a separate warranty from the manufacturer concerned

The warranty period begins with the purchase by the first buyer. The warranty period begins on the date that appears on the original purchase receipt.
