How to change the blades on the ABSS 18 1.6 E Select shear?

The blades are not resharpenable and must be replaced in pairs. Disconnect the battery, then unscrew the fixing screws of the worn blade. Install the new blade respecting the cutting direction (straight or curved). Tighten the screws moderately. Refer to the manual for the recommended torque.

What lubricant should I use for cutting steel and aluminum?

For steel, use a cutting paste or cutting oil. For aluminum, kerosene is recommended. Apply the lubricant along the cutting line before starting.

What is the maximum sheet thickness the shear can cut?

The maximum thickness depends on the material. For steel with a strength of 400 N/mm², the capacity is 1.6 mm. For aluminum up to 250 N/mm², it is approximately 2.0 mm. Never exceed the indicated maximum thickness.

How to charge the Fein ABSS 18 battery?

Use exclusively a Fein charger suitable for 18 V Li-Ion batteries. The charging temperature must be between 5 °C and 45 °C. Plug in the charger, insert the battery, and wait until the LEDs indicate the end of charging. Never charge a damaged battery.

What does the flashing red light on the battery mean?

A flashing red light indicates that the battery is outside the operating temperature range (5 °C – 45 °C) or that it is defective. Let it cool down or warm up, then try again. If the problem persists, contact Fein customer service.

Can I cut overlapping sheets or welds?

No, it is forbidden to cut overlapping sheets whose total thickness exceeds the maximum capacity or to cut at the location of welds. This would damage the blades and reduce the tool's lifespan.

How to make an interior cut (cutout) in sheet metal?

For an interior cut, start by drilling a hole of sufficient diameter to insert the shear. Consult the technical specifications in the manual for the minimum inside radius. Then guide the tool perpendicular to the surface.

What personal protective equipment should I wear?

Always wear safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, gloves, and a cut-resistant apron. A dust mask is recommended for materials that generate fine particles.

How to maintain the shear to extend its lifespan?

Regularly clean the ventilation slots with dry, oil-free compressed air. Replace blades in pairs as soon as they show signs of wear. Apply lubricant during each use and store the tool in a dry place.

Intended use of the power tool:

ABLS ( ^** ): Hand-guided sheet metal shears for cutting sheet metal in weather-protected environments without water supply using the application tools and accessories recommended by Fein.

ABSS ( ^** ): Hand-guided slitting shears for cutting sheet metal and tight curves in weather-protected environments without water supply using the application tools and accessories recommended by Fein.

Special safety instructions.

Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on application, use face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses. Where appropriate, wear dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of filtrating particles generated by your operation. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.

Secure the work piece firmly. A work piece that is gripped tightly in a clamping device or vice, is more secure than if held by hand.

Do not rivet or screw any name-plates or signs onto the power tool. If the insulation is damaged, protection against an electric shock will be ineffective. Adhesive labels are recommended.

Do not use accessories which are not specifically designed and recommended by the power tool manufacturer. Safe operation is not ensured merely because an accessory fits your power tool.

Clean the ventilation openings on the power tool at regular intervals using non-metal tools. The blower of the motor draws dust into the housing. An excessive accumulation of metallic dust can cause an electrical hazard.

Do not direct the power tool against yourself, other persons or animals. Danger of injury from sharp or hot application tools.

Use and handling of the battery (battery pack).

To avoid hazardous situations such as burns, fire, explosion, skin injuries, and other injuries when handling the battery, observe the following instructions:

Batteries must not be disassembled, opened or reduced in size. Do not subject batteries to mechanical impact or shock. Hazardous vapours and fluid can escape in case of damage and improper use of the battery. The vapours can irritate the respiratory system. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause skin irritations or burns.

When battery fluid from a damaged battery has come into contact with objects close by, check the respective components, clean them or replace them as required.

Keep the battery away from heat and fire. Do not store the battery in direct sunlight.

Do not remove the battery from its original packaging until it is going to be used.

Before any work on the machine itself, remove the battery from the power tool. If the power tool accidentally starts, there is danger of injury.

Remove the battery only when the power tool is switched off.

Keep the battery away from children.

Keep the battery clean and protect it against moisture and water. Clean contaminated battery terminals and power tool connections with a dry, clean cloth.

Use only intact original FEIN batteries that are intended for your power tool. When working with and charging incorrect, damaged, repaired or reconditioned batteries, imitations or other brands, there is danger of fire and/or explosion.

Follow the safety warnings in the operating instructions of the battery charger.

Hand/arm vibrations

The vibration emission level given in this information sheet has been measured in accordance with a standardised test given in EN 62841 and may be used to compare one tool with another. It may be used for a preliminary assessment of exposure.

The declared vibration emission level represents the main applications of the tool. However, if the tool is used for different applications, with different accessories or poorly maintained, the vibration emission may differ. This may significantly increase the exposure level over the total working period.

An estimation of the level of exposure to vibration should also take into account the times when the tool is switched off or when it is running but not actually doing the job. This may significantly reduce the exposure level over the total working period.

Identify additional safety measures to protect the operator from the effects of vibration such as: maintain the tool and the accessories, keep the hands warm, organisation of work patterns.

Operating Instructions.

Guide the power tool toward the work piece only when switched on.

While cutting, hold the power tool as upright as possible to the work-piece surface (ABLS ( ^** )).

Guide the power tool uniformly and with light feed in the cutting direction. Excessive feed reduces the tool life of the application tools.

Do not cut steel sheets where welded. Do not cut layered sheets exceeding the max. work-piece thickness.

To increase the tool life of the blades, it is recommended to apply a lubricating agent alongside the intended cutting line:

- For cuts in steel sheet: Cutting paste or cutting oil, - For cuts in aluminium: Petroleum.

Do not switch the power tool off until after having removed it from the cutting path.

The symptom for worn blades is a clearly increased feed force at lower working progress.

ABSS ( ^** ): For inside cuts, a pilot hole is required; see "Technical Data".

Blades and cutting bars cannot be reground.

ABLS ( ^** ): The blades cannot be reground and must always be replaced in pairs.

Handling the battery.

Store, operate and charge the battery only using FEIN battery chargers within the battery operating-temperature range between 5 °C – 45 °C (41 °F – 113 °F). At the beginning of the charging procedure, the battery temperature must be within the battery operating-temperature range.

The real percentage of the battery charge condition is only indicated when the power tool motor is stopped.

The electronics automatically switch off the motor prior to the battery being deep discharged.

Repair and customer service.

When working metal under extreme operating conditions, it is possible for conductive dust to settle in the interior of the power

tool. Blow out the interior of the power tool via the ventilation slots frequently with dry and oil-free compressed air.

Products that have come into contact with asbestos may not be sent in for repair. Dispose of products contaminated with asbestos according to the applicable country-specific regulations for such disposal.
