How to recharge the battery of the Stanley TLM40 distance meter?

Open the cover on the side, connect the supplied USB cable (small end into the device, USB end into a charger or computer). Full charge takes approximately 2.5 hours. The battery level is displayed on the screen.

How to take a distance measurement with the TLM40?

Point the laser at the target, press the power button (Figure A 3) to turn on the laser, then press again to take the measurement. The result appears on the screen.

How to change the measurement unit?

Press and hold the button for about 3 seconds to cycle from meters to decimal feet, fractional feet, inches, etc. Release when the desired unit appears.

Why does my device turn off by itself?

Auto power off occurs after 120 seconds of inactivity to save battery. You can also turn it off manually by holding the button for 5 seconds.

What to do if the distance meter does not turn on?

Check that the battery is charged. Connect it to a USB source for at least 10 minutes. If nothing happens, contact customer service.

What is the accuracy outdoors?

Accuracy is ±6 mm up to 9 m in favorable conditions (good surface, ambient temperature). Beyond that, accuracy may decrease.

Is the laser dangerous to the eyes?

The TLM40 is a class 2 laser. Never look directly into the beam, nor with optical instruments. Prolonged exposure may be harmful.

Does the device need calibration?

No, calibration is not necessary. If measurements seem incorrect, check the usage conditions and cleanliness of the lens.

Can a reflector be used to improve range?

The device is designed for measurements on standard targets (walls, floors). Using a reflector can improve detection, but is not required.

How to store the distance meter when not in use?

Store it in a dry place at a temperature between -10°C and +60°C. Recharge the battery every 6 months if not in use.

WARNING:

While the laser tool is in operation, be careful not to expose your eyes to the emitting laser beam (red light source). Exposure to a laser beam for an extended time period may be hazardous to your eyes. Do not look into the beam with optical aids.

Charging the Battery

Fully charge the battery before initial use and whenever the tool has not been used for 6 months or longer.

1. Locate the port cover on the side of the tool (Figure A4).
2. Using your finger, gently pull the port cover down (Figure ①).
3. Insert the small end of the USB Recharge Cable into the port on the side of the tool, making sure to insert the flat side of the cable into the flat side of the port (Figure C2).
4. Insert the USB end of the cable into a USB port in a computer or USB power outlet (Figure 3).
5. Wait approximately 2.5 hours for the battery to fully charge and then disconnect the USB Recharge Cable.

Operation

1. Point the laser at the top of the tool (Figure A 1) toward the wall whose distance you need to measure (Figure E 1).
2. Click Figure A3) to turn the tool on and display a laser dot on the wall (Figure E1).
3. When the bottom of the tool is positioned at the correct distance from the wall, click to take the measurement (Figure E 2).
4. View the measurement on the display window (Figure ①③).

Changing the Unit of Measure

Once the current measurement is taken, you can change the unit of measure from decimal ft (6.21 ft) to fractional ft (6'02"9/16), fractional ft to meters (1.894 m), meters to inches (74 9/16 in), or inches to decimal ft.

To change the unit of measurement, press and hold until you see the measurement change (3 seconds).

NOTE: If you continue to hold after the measurement changes, the tool will turn off.

Re-measuring

When you need to take a new measurement, point the laser toward the wall whose distance you need to measure.

Turning Off the Tool

The tool can be turned off in either of these ways:

After taking a measurement, press and hold for 5 seconds (until the display window clears).
If you do not use the tool for 120 seconds, it will automatically turn off.
