16) Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times.

17) Never pick up or carry a lawnmower while the engine is running.

18) Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire:

Before carrying out any work underneath the cutting deck or before unclogging the chute;

  • Before checking, cleaning or working on lawnmower;

  • After striking a foreign object. Inspect the lawnmower for damage and make repairs before restarting and operating the lawnmower;

  • If the lawnmower begins to abnormally vibrate (Immediate look for the cause of the vibrations and take for necessary controls at a Specialised Centre).

19) Stop the engine:

  • Whenever you leave the lawnmower unattended. Remove the key from models with electric starters.

  • Before refuelling.

  • Every time you remove or replace the grass-catcher.

  • Before adjusting the grass cutting height.

20) Reduce the throttle before turning off the engine and turn the fuel off when you have finished mowing, following the instructions in the engine handbook.

21) When mowing, always keep to a safe distance from the rotating blade. This distance is the length of the handle.

1) Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. Regular maintenance is essential for safety and performance.
2) Never store the equipment with fuel in the tank inside a building where vapour may reach a flame or a spark or a source of extreme heat.
3) Allow the engine to cool before storing in an enclosed space.
4) To reduce the fire hazard, keep the engine, exhaust silencer, battery compartment and fuel storage area free of grass, leaves, or excessive grease. Do not leave containers with grass cuttings in rooms.
5) Check the stone-guard and grass-catcher frequently for wear and deterioration.
6) If the fuel tank has to be drained, this should be done outdoors and when the engine is cool.
7) Wear strong work gloves when removing and reassembling the blade.
8) Keep the blade balanced during sharpening. All operations on the blade (dismantling, sharpening, balancing, remounting and/or replacing) require a certain familiarity and special tools. For safety reasons, these jobs are best carried out at a specialized centre.
9) For safety reasons, never use the machine when it has worn or damaged parts. Parts are to be replaced and not repaired. Use genuine spare parts. Parts that are not of the same quality can damage the equipment and impair your safety.

EN HOW TO USE THE MACHINE

For instructions regarding the engine and the battery (if supplied), read the relevant manuals.

NOTE - The number which precedes each paragraph links the references in the text to the respective figures (listed on the pages 2 - 3 - 4 - 5).

1. COMPLETE ASSEMBLY

NOTE - The machine can be supplied with some parts already assembled.

WARNING - Unpacking and completing the assembly should be done on a flat and stable surface, with enough space for machine handling and its packaging, always making use of suitable equipment.

Disposal of the packaging should be done in accordance with the local regulations in force.

1.1 Return the handle (1) to the work position and secure it to the side chassis supports using the supplied nuts and bolts (2) as illustrated.

The handle (1) can be height-adjusted in three different positions by inserting the pins (3) in one of the three pairs of holes on the brackets.

The washers (4) on the clamps (5) must be mounted so they keep the handle (1) firmly fixed without too much effort required to tighten or release them.

Tighten the clamps (5) after adjusting.

Insert the starter cable (6) in the guide spiral (7).

Tighten the nut (8) to secure the spiral (7).

1.2 Insert the chassis (1) in the grass-catcher (2) and secure all plastic profiles (3) as illustrated using a screwdriver.
1.3 In electric start models, connect the battery cable (1) to the general wiring connector (2) on the lawnmower.

2. CONTROL DESCRIPTION

NOTE - The meanings of the symbols on controls are explained on page 6 and following.

2.1 Throttle trigger

The throttle is controlled by the lever (1). Lever positions are indicated on the relevant plate.

Some models have a fixed speed, and therefore no need of a throttle.

2.2 Blade brake lever

The blade brake is controlled by the lever (1) which must be held against the handle for ignition and during lawnmower operations. The engine stops when the lever is released.

2.3 Drive engagement lever

In the power-driven models, the lawnmower is moved forward by pulling the lever (1) towards the handle.

The lawnmower stops moving forward when the lever is released.

2.4 Cutting height adjustment

MAKE THIS ADJUSTMENT WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF.

To adjust cutting height, press the button (1) and lift or push the chassis using the handle (2) to the desired position, indicated by the numbered scale (3).

2.5 Only for models DML: Discharge selection lever

This lever (1) has two positions:

A = rear discharge without collection or with cut grass in the grass-catcher.

B = "mulching" function or (if applicable) side discharge without collection.

To switch from one position to the next, slightly lift the lever (1) and move it to the desired position so it is locked by the stop (2).

NOTE - If switching from one position to the next is difficult, the problem may be caused by residual grass accumulated in the

sliding guides and, therefore, the chassis interior must be washed and cleaned (4.4).

3. GRASS CUTTING

NOTE - This machine cuts lawns in various modes; before starting work, prepare the machine based on how the lawn is to be mowed.

  • Only for models DML:

3.1a Preparation for grass cutting and collection in grass-catcher:

  • Move the discharge selection lever (1) to position «A».
  • In models with side discharge potential: make sure the side door (2) is lowered and locked with the safety lever (3).
  • Lift the rear stone-guard (4) and correctly hook on the grass-catcher (5) as shown in the figure.

3.1b Preparation for grass cutting and rear discharge:

  • Move the discharge selection lever (1) to position «A»
  • In models with side discharge potential: make sure the side door (2) is lowered and locked with the safety lever (3).

3.1c Preparation for grass cutting and mulching:

  • Move the discharge selection lever (1) to position «B».
  • In models with side discharge potential: make sure the side door (2) is lowered and locked with the safety lever (3).

3.1d Preparation for grass cutting and side discharge (if applicable):

  • Move the discharge selection lever (1) to position «B».
  • Slightly push the safety lever (3) and lift the side door (2).
  • Insert the discharge deflector (6) as shown in the figure.
  • Close the side door (2) so that the deflector (6) is locked in place.

  • Only for models DM:

3.1e Preparation for grass cutting and collection in grass-catcher:

  • Lift the rear stone-guard (4) and correctly hook on the grasscatcher (5) as shown in the figure.

3.1f Preparation for grass cutting and rear discharge:

  • Lift the rear stone-guard (4) and remove the grass-catcher (5).

3.19 Preparation for grass cutting and mulching:

  • Lift the rear stone-guard (4) and fit the deflector cap (11) in the outlet, pushing it until the fastener tooth clicks into place (12).

To remove the deflector cap (11), use the lever (13) located under the grip, until the tooth (12) is released and the deflector cap is removed from the outlet.

3.2 Starting the engine

To start, follow the instructions in the engine manual, pull the blade brake lever (1) against the handle and firmly pull the starter cable knob (2).

If the model has electric ignition pull the blade brake lever (1) against the handle and turn the starter key (3).

3.3 Grass cutting

  • In case of "mulching": always avoid removing a large quantity of grass. Never cut more than one third the total grass height in a single passage! Regulate the forward speed according to the lawn conditions and the amount of grass removed.
  • For side discharge (if applicable): it is best to mow in a direction where cut grass is not discharged on the grass still to be cut.
  • If there is a grass-catcher with contents indicator device (if applicable): while working, with the blade in motion, the indicator remains lifted as long as the grass-catcher is able to hold cut grass; when it lowers, it means that the grass-catcher is full and must be emptied.

To prevent damage to the grass turf, use position «1» only on perfectly flat, compact and level land.

- Only for models DML:

IMPORTANT NOTE - If discharge selection (2.5) needs to be switched from position «B» (mulching) to another during work with the lever in position «A» (rear discharge), turn off the machine and remove grass on the sliding door (1); grass on the door may prevent full discharge selection lever movement.

LAWN CARE RECOMENDATIONS

Each type of grass has different features and may thus require different ways to care for the lawn; always read the instructions on seed boxes for mowing height for the growth conditions in the work area.

Keep in mind that most grass is made up of a stem and one or more leaves. If leaves are fully cut, the lawn is damaged and growth is more difficult.

The following indications generally apply:

  • too low a cut causes grass tears and uprooting, with a "spotted" aspect;
  • in the summer, cutting must be higher to avoid the ground from drying;
  • do not cut wet grass; this could reduce blade efficiency due to sticky grass and tear the lawn;
  • for particularly high grass, initially mow at maximum admitted machine height followed by a second mow after two or three days.

The appearance of the lawn will improve if you alternate the cutting in both directions at the same height.

3.4 End of operations

When the work has been completed, release the brake lever (1) and disconnect the spark plug cap (2). In models where applicable, remove the starter key (3).

WAIT UNTIL THE BLADE STÖPS before performing any work.

4. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

IMPORTANT - Routine and accurate maintenance is essential in maintaining original machine safety and performance levels.

Store the lawnmower in a dry place.

1) Wear strong work gloves before cleaning, maintaining or adjusting the machine.
2) Accurately wash the machine with water after cutting, remove grass debris and mud accumulated in the chassis to prevent it from drying and causing problems the next time the lawn-mower is used.
3) In models with painted chassis, internal chassis part paint may detach over time due to the abrasive action of cut grass; in this case, promptly touch-up paint with rust-proof paint to prevent rusting that could corrode the metal.
4) If accessing the lower part is necessary, only tilt the machine on the side indicated in the engine manual, following the relevant instructions. In models that include side discharge, remove the discharge deflector (if installed-3.1.d).
5) Do not drip petrol onto the plastic parts of the engine or the machine to prevent damaging them and remove all traces of spilt petrol immediately. The warranty does not cover damage to plastic parts caused by petrol.
6) In AVS models: in the event of abnormal handle vibrations, check the vibration-proof sleeves and contact your Dealer to replace them if damaged or worn.

4.1 Each intervention on the blade is best if conducted at a specialised Centre that has the most appropriate tools.

Only blades with the following codes must be used on this machine:

81004450/0 (for model 504)

81004451/0 (for model 504 AVS)

81004453/0 (for model 554)

81004454/0 (for model 554 AVS)

Blades must always be marked «GGP». Given the product evolution, the above mentioned blade may be replaced in time by others, with similar interchangeable and operating safety characteristics.
Reassemble the blade (2) with the code and markings facing the ground, following the order indicated in the illustration.
Tighten the central screw (1) using a torque wrench set to 35-40 Nm.
4.2 On models with drive units, adjust the tension of the belt with the nut (1) to get the right measurement (6 mm).
4.3 To charge a flat battery, connect it to the battery charger (1) following the instructions in the battery maintenance manual. Do not connect the battery charger directly to the engine terminal. It is not possible to start the engine using the battery charger as a power source, as it may get damaged.
For prolonged lawnmower disuse, disconnect the battery from the engine wiring, making sure the charge level is good.

The battery (2) can be accessed by removing the cover (3).

4.4 Always stand behind the lawnmower handle when cleaning.

To clean the internal parts of the lawnmower:

  • place the machine on firm ground;
  • over the cutting height as far as possible;
  • connect a water hose to its pipe fitting (1);
  • start the engine.

  • Only for models DML:

  • initially clean in the same operating situation as before;

  • stop the engine, move the discharge selection lever to the opposite position, start the engine and clean again.

5. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Environmental protection should be a priority of considerable importance when using the machine, for the benefit of both social coexistence and the environment in which we live.

  • Try not to cause any disturbance to the surrounding area.

  • Scrupulously comply with local regulations and provisions for the disposal of waste materials after cutting.

  • Scrupulously comply with local regulations and provisions for the disposal of pakagings, oils, petrol, batteries, filters, damaged parts or any elements which have a strong impact on the environment; this waste must not be disposed of as normal waste, it must be separated and taken to specified waste disposal centres where the material will be recycled.
  • At the time of decommissioning, do not pollute the environment with the machine, hand it over to a disposal centre, in accordance with the local laws in force.

6. ACCESSORIES

WARNING: For your safety it is strictly prohibited to fit any other accessory other than those included in the following list, they have been exclusively designed for the model and type of machine you are using.

6.1 Kit "Mulching" (if not supplied)

It finely chops the grass cuttings and leaves them on the lawn, instead of collecting them in the grass-catcher.
