Dear Customer, Please read this manual carefully before use in order to avoid damages resulting from misuse. Please pay particular attention to the safety information. If you pass the device on to a third party, these Operating Instructions must also be handed over.

BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT

This unit allows you to measure the systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as the heartbeat frequency oscillometrically. All readings can be read on the LCD display. This blood pressure measurement unit is meant only for measuring on the upper arm of adults. It is for home use and only for non-invasive blood pressure measuring. If the blood pressure is measured by a doctor in the hospital, then the stress or other effects this may have on the patient can result in higher blood pressure. Blood pressure is subject to constant change depending on circumstances. Therefore, one should not draw conclusions from a single measurement. It is better to take measurements at home and schedule regular readings. This will give you a more accurate knowledge of your actual blood pressure and help your doctor to make important decisions for diagnosis or treatment. If you are suffering from heart or liver problems, arterial deposition, diabetes, or similar problems, please seek advice from your doctor before carrying out the measurements. WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE? Blood pressure is the pressure which the blood exerts to the arteries. The blood pressure inside the arteries is always fluctuating during your heart cycle. The highest pressure during this cycle is called systole and the lowest pressure is called diastole. With these two blood pressure values, the systole and the diastole, the doctor can determine the blood pressure of the patient. Your blood pressure can be influenced by many different factors, like physical effort, fear, the time of day, etc. The blood pressure is usually low in the morning and increases in the afternoon until the evening. It is generally lower in summer and higher in winter. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MEASURING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE AT HOME? Measuring blood pressure during a check-up by a doctor in a hospital or clinic can make a person nervous, which results in a higher blood pressure. Various factors can influence a blood pressure measurement, therefore one single measurement does not necessarily give an accurate reading. The measured blood pressure of a relaxed patient, after getting up in the morning and before eating breakfast, is called fundamental blood pressure. Therefore measuring the blood pressure at home is important, because there the blood pressure is closest to this status. A. Classification of blood pressure according to WHO The standards to measure high and low blood pressure, regardless of age, were determined by the World Health Organization (WHO), as shown in picture 1. B. Fluctuations of blood pressure Blood pressure fluctuates depending on the time of day and season. The fluctuations are more marked in people with high blood pressure. Normally blood pressure is higher when one is working and then lowers during the night. The fluctuations of blood pressure during a day are illustrated in picture 2. These measurements were taken every 5 minutes. The thick line represents the period of sleep. The rise of the blood pressure at 4 o'clock in the morning (shown in the illustration Fig. 2 as A) and at noon (shown in the illustration as B) represent a pain attack. POINTS TO NOTE BEFORE USING THE MEASURING INSTRUMENT UNIT CAUTION! Read the instructions carefully before using the device. Please follow instructions carefully. Do not use device near mobile phones and microwaves to avoid electromagnetic disturbances.

  • Blood pressure should be taken by a doctor or an expert who knows your medical history. By making regular use of the blood pressure measuring unit and recording your readings, you can keep your doctor informed of your blood pressure tendencies.
  • Connect the tube with the appliance’s tube connector.
  • Tie the sleeve securely around your upper arm. The sleeve should be at the same height as your heart. If necessary, support the arm on a table by placing an object (e.g. a cushion) underneath.
  • The measuring instrument should not be moved or jostled during the measurement, because this can lead to incorrect measurement of the blood pressure.
  • Do the measurement in a quiet place and in a relaxed position without talking.
  • Do not twist the seal around the sleeve of a jacket or a shirt, because it is not possible to get an accurate measurement this way.
  • Remember that the blood pressure fluctuates naturally during the daytime and other factors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, bathing, taking medicine, and physical effort influence blood pressure levels.
  • The values of the blood pressure measurement available in this measuring appliance correspond with the values of a trained specialist, who measures with a sleeve while listening with a stethoscope. The measurement values are between the limit values which were determined by the national standardization for electronic and automated sphygmomanometers of the United States. 1. Find the brachial artery (Arteria Brachialis) of your left arm, which is

located 25 mm above the elbow. Test where your pulse is strongest.

2. Now, place the sleeve around your left upper arm. The hook and

loop adhesive fabric must face outwards and the tube should be directed towards the hand. The whole arm should be uncovered. There must not be any pressure on veins from clothing, jewellery, etc., as this can alter the measurement. Also, do not place the sleeve over clothing.

3. Place the sleeve so that it is positioned about 2 - 3 cm above the

crease of the elbow. The tube must be in line with the hand, as if the tube were dividing the hand down the middle. Close the sleeve so that it surrounds the upper arm firmly. Check that the hook and loop adhesive fabric is securely fastened.

4. The person whose blood pressure is being taken should now be

sitting on a chair with the left elbow supported on a table. The tube must not be bent or twisted! BrachialArtery2-3cm BM122.qxp 9/10/07 2:24 PM Page 18 Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine- 19 -

CORRECT BODY POSTURE DURING MEASUREMENTTo obtain as accurate a reading as possible, always remember to hold the sleeve at the sameheight as the heart. If the sleeve is higher or lower than the heart this causes deviations fromyour actual blood pressure.Measuring blood pressure while sitting:• Place your elbow on the table or other surface.• The sleeve should be at the same height as your heart. If necessary, place a cushion or abook underneath your lower arm. Keep your arm and the rest of your body in a relaxedposition.• Any exertion on the body, such as drinking, eating, talking, making or receiving telephonecalls, etc., leads to incorrect measurements and should therefore be avoided.DESCRIPTION OF THE SYMBOLS IN THE DISPLAYSymbol in Condition/ Cause Corrective measuresthe displayBrachialArtery ERROR This symbol appears when anaccurate measurement isimpossible. This icon appears when thebatteries are almost empty or havebeen inserted incorrectly.Replace all old batteries withnew ones.
