General Safety Warnings for Trimmers
▶ Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this machine.
Failure to follow the safety warnings
and instructions may result in elec- tric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
▶ Save all safety warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term machine in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) machines or battery-operated (cordless) machines.
Work area safety
- Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
- Do not operate the machine in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Machines create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
▶ Keep children and bystanders away while operating the machine.
Distractions can cause you to lose control over the machine. Never operate the machine while people, especially children or pets, are nearby.
Electrical safety
The plug of the machine must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock.
- Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refri-
gerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
▶ Do not expose the machine to rain or wet conditions. Penetration of water in the machine increases the risk of an electric shock.
▶ Never use the cord for carrying, hanging up or unplugging the machine. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges and moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
- When operating a machine outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
- When operating the machine in damp environments is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD). The use of a residual current device (RCD) reduces the risk of electric shock.
Personal safety
▶ Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating the machine. Do not use a machine while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of in-attention while operating the machine may result in serious personal injury.
▶ Wear safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Wearing
safety equipment such as dusk mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
▶ Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery, picking up or carrying the machine. Carrying machines with your finger on the switch or plugging in machines that have the switch on invites accidents.
▶ Remove any adjusting key or spanner before turning the machine on. A spanner or a key left attached to a rotating part of the machine may result in personal injury.
- Avoid abnormal body posture. Provide for a secure stance and keep your balance at all times; never run. This enables better control of the machine in unexpected situations.
- Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Always wear sturdy footwear and long trousers when operating the machine.
▶ If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use
of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
- Do not assume a false sense of security and disregard the safety regulations for machines, even if familiar with the machine through multiple use. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.
Use and Handling of the Machine
- Do not force the machine. Use the correct machine for your application. The correct machine will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
▶ Do not use the machine if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any machine that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
▶ Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the machine before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing machines. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the machine accidentally. -
Store idle machines out of the reach of children. Do not allow persons unfamiliar with the machine or these instructions to operate the machine. Trimmers are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
-
Maintain trimmers with care. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the operation of the machine. Have damaged parts repaired before using the machine. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained machines.
- Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
▶ Use the machine, accessories, application tools, etc. according to these instructions. Take the working conditions and the work to be performed into account. Use of machines for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
▶ Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the machine in unexpected situations.
Battery tool use and care
Remove the battery pack

Mount the handle using the screw (5) and the nut (6). The handle (4) can be set to different positions. To change the adjustment, loosen the nut (6) a little and move the handle to the desired position. Retighten the nut (6) again.
Mounting the protection guard (see figure D)
Position the protection guard (7) on the trimmer head and fasten it with the provided screw (9).
Switching on
▶ Caution: Switch garden tool off and remove battery from machine before adjusting or cleaning.
The cutting line continues to rotate for a few seconds after the trimmer is switched off. Allow the motor/cutting line to stop rotating before switching on again.
▶ Do not briefly switch off and on again several times in a row.
▶ Only use Bosch approved cutting elements. Cutting performance will vary with different cutting elements.
Charging the Battery
The battery is equipped with temperature monitoring that allows charging only in the temperature range between 0 °C and 35 °C. In this manner, a high battery service life is achieved.
Note: The battery is supplied partially charged. To ensure full battery capacity, completely charge the battery in the battery charger before using for the first time.
The lithium-ion battery can be charged at any time without reducing its service life. Interrupting the charging procedure does not cause damage to the battery.
The "Electronic Cell Protection (ECP)" protects the lithium-ion battery against deep discharging. When the battery is
empty, the product is switched off by means of a protective circuit: The product no longer operates.
Do not continue to press the On/Off switch after an automatic shut-off of the product. The battery could become damaged.
Observe the notes for disposal of the battery.
Inserting/removing the battery (see figure E)
Note: Using unsuitable batteries can lead to malfunctions or damage the machine.
Insert the charged battery (10). Ensure the battery is inserted correctly.
To remove the battery (10) from the machine, press the battery unlocking button and pull the battery out.
Charging Procedure
The charging procedure starts as soon as the mains plug of the charger is plugged into a socket outlet and the battery (10) is inserted onto the charger (11).
Due to the intelligent charging method, the charging condition of the battery is automatically detected and the battery is charged with the optimum charging current, depending on battery temperature and voltage.
This gives longer life to the battery and always leaves it fully charged when kept in the charger for storage.
Meaning of the indication elements on the charger (AL 3620 CV/AL 3640 CV/AL 36V-20)
Rapid-charging Procedure

The rapid-charging procedure is indicated by flashing of the green battery charge indicator. Indication element of the battery: During the charging procedure, the three green LEDs light up one after the other and briefly go out. The battery is fully charged when the three green LEDs light up continuously. The three LEDs go out again approx. 5 minutes after the battery has been fully charged.
Note: The rapid-charging procedure is only possible when the battery temperature is within the allowable charging temperature range, see section "Technical Data".
Battery charged

Continuous lighting of the green LED indicator indicates that the battery is fully charged.
Additionally, a signal tone sounds for approx. 2 seconds, which acoustically indicates that the battery is fully charged. Afterwards, the battery can be removed for immediate use. When the battery is not inserted, continuous lighting of the LED indicator indicates that the mains plug is inserted in the socket outlet and that the battery charger is ready for operation.
Battery Temperature below 0°C or above 45°C

Continuous lighting of the red LED indicator indicates that the temperature of the battery is not within the allowable charging temperature range, see section “Technical Data”. As soon as the allowable charging temperature range is reached, the battery charger automatically switches to rapid charging.
When the battery is not within the allowable temperature range, the red battery LED lights up when inserting the battery into the battery charger.
No Charging Procedure Possible

If a different malfunction of the charging procedure is present, this will be indicated through flashing of the red LED indicator.
The charging procedure cannot be started and the battery cannot be charged (see section Troubleshooting).
Charging Advice
With continuous or several repetitive charging cycles without interruption, the charger can warm up. This is not meaningful and does not indicate a technical defect of the battery charger.
A significantly reduced working period after charging indicates that the battery is used and must be replaced.
Observe the notes for disposal.
Battery Cooling (Active Air Cooling)
The fan control integrated into the charger monitors the temperature of the inserted battery. When the battery temperature is above 30^ C, a fan cools down the battery to the optimal charging temperature. The fan generates a ventilation sound when switched on.
If the fan is not running, the battery temperature is within the optimum charge-temperature range or the fan is defective. In this case, the charging time of the battery might be extended.
Operation
Switching On and Off (see figure F)
To switch on, firstly press the lock-off button (1). Then press the On/Off switch (2) and keep it pressed.
Troubleshooting

To switch off, release the On/Off switch (2).
Lawn trimming/Edge cutting
Press button (12). Turn the bottom part of the trimmer by 180^ to position the trimmer head either for lawn trimming or edge cutting. Release button (12) so that the turning mechanism engages.
Lawn trimming
Move the trimmer left and right, keeping it well away from the body. Cut higher grass in steps. (see figure G)
Edge cutting
Guide the trimmer along the edge of the lawn. Avoid contact with solid surfaces or walls to prevent rapid wear of the cutting line. (see figure H)
Cutting around trees and bushes
For better control, use the plant protector (8). Carefully cut around trees and bushes so that they do not come into contact with the cutting line. Plants can die if you damage the bark.
Dismounting the spool, winding up the cutting line and mounting the spool (see figures I bis L)
▶ Remove the battery before replacing the spool.
Press both latches of the spool cover together and remove the spool cover (13). Afterwards, remove the empty spool (14).
Cut off approx. 6.0 m line from the refill roll. Fold the line in half, so that it has a length of 2 x 3 m. Attach the line centre to the nose on the spool and wind up the line - one end in each spool compartment - uniformly distributed and taut.
Slide both ends of the cutting line through the holes for line guiding (15) in the trimmer head and mount the spool back into the trimmer head. Affix the spool by mounting the spool cover (13).
Line Feeding (see figure M)
Semi-automatic Line Feeding
The trimmer is equipped with a semi-automatic feeding system. The system feeds 10 mm of the line with every press of the on/off switch (2).
Manual Line Feeding
Press the line-feed button (16), and pull the cutting line out to the desired length.
