PRODUCT OPERATION

Preparing the grass trimmer for operation

Caution! Cut off the grass trimmer power supply by disconnecting its batteries before performing any installation and adjustment works.

Visually inspect the device. If any damages are observed, do not operate the grass trimmer before removing them.

Before first use, install a suitable for a given work cutting element: head with a cutting line or blade, cutting element guard, handles, and a band — harness.

EN

Use the head with cutting line only to mow the grass. The blade is intended for cutting shrubs, lignified plant shoots, etc.

To install the cutting element guard, screw it using screws to the spindle guard (II). The supplied guard is suitable for working both with the line and blade. The guard has a small blade for automatic shortening of the line. If the blade has protection, remove it before commencing work with the line.

Install the grass trimmer handles. To do this, remove the upper part of the handles' clamp by unscrewing all screws. Then, in the lower part of the clamp, place the handle connector and reinstall the clamp's upper part. Secure both parts of the clamp using screws (III). Connect both parts of the drive shaft cover. To do this, loosen the knob of the clamp connecting the drive shaft covers, then press and hold the latch lever. Insert the lower cover into the clamp and make sure that the latch hook fits into the hole in the cover (IV). Secure the connection by tightening the clamp knob so that both halves of the drive shaft cover are fixed relative to each other.

Depending on the equipment supplied, install the belt (V) or harness (VI). Select the length of the belts so that they do not press onto the operator's body, but at the same time do not move during operation. The grass trimmer can also be suspended on a harness or belt other than that supplied with the device, provided the device can be hung on the belt or harness without any clamping modification.

Suspend the grass trimmer passing the belt or harness catch through the clamp eye. Ensure that the safety spring is back in its original position. This will prevent the device from detaching from the harness or belt.

Then select the handle angle and position. To do this, loosen the fixing knob and position the handle so as to ensure full freedom of movement during work, and both handles are positioned not to cause excessive strain. Hands should be bent in elbows. The cutting element should move parallel to the ground.

You can change the clamp position if necessary. To do this, loosen the screw (VII), move the clamp, and then tighten the screw to lock the clamp preventing its movement. Select the clamp position so that it is just behind the centre of gravity of the suspended grass trimmer; this will cause the cutting element to be inclined towards the ground by itself.

Disconnect the grass trimmer from the harness or belt. Remove the belt or harness.

Depending on the cutting element chosen, install the spool with the cutting line or metal blade.

Caution! Due to the risk of injury, wear protective gloves while installing the blade. Fix the blade with an applied guard.

When installing the spool with the cutting line, install the upper fixing flange, and then blocking the rotation of the spindle, screw on the spool with the cutting line (VIII).

In case of the blade installation, put the upper fixing flange on the spindle. Place the cutting blade on the flange so that the hole in the blade fits the protruding part of the fixing flange (IX).

Place the lower fixing flange. Blocking the spindle rotation, tighten the fixing flanges and the disc in between firmly and securely (X).

Connecting to the power supply

Two batteries power the device. The device will not start up if one of the batteries is not installed or is discharged. The device's batteries are connected in a series, which means that the device is supplied with the sum of their rated voltages. It is recommended that both batteries have the same capacity and are equally charged. The batteries used to power the device should also be equally used. It is not recommended to connect an exhausted battery with a new one, even if both are equally charged and have the same capacity. Failure to comply with the above recommendations will result in a shorter operating time, and faster wear of the batteries used to power the device.

Only the following 18 V Li-Ion YATO batteries can be used to power the device: YT-82842, YT-82843 and YT-82844, which can only be charged with YATO YT-82848 or YT-82849 chargers. It is forbidden to use other batteries with a different rated voltage and not matching the device battery socket. It is forbidden to modify the socket or battery to make them match.

Slide the charged batteries into the guides of the battery socket so that the battery latch holds it in place (XI). Check whether any battery does not slide out of the device socket by itself.

Starting the grass trimmer (XII)

Connect both batteries to the grass trimmer. Install the harness or belt and attach the grass trimmer. Grasp the grass trimmer handles with two hands. Make sure that the cutting element does not come into contact with any object or ground. The right handle is equipped with the power switch and a safety lock to prevent starting the grass trimmer by accidentally pressing the power switch. Grasp the handle in such a way that the hand presses and holds the lock in this position, and then press and hold the power switch. The cutting element will start rotating.

The grass trimmer stops when the pressure on the power switch is released. After releasing the pressure on the power switch, the cutting element will keep rotating for some time. The grass trimmer can be detached from the harness and put aside only after the cutting element has completely stopped

Preparing the workplace

Before commencing work, prepare the workplace. Designate a safety zone with a radius of at least 15 m from the workplace, which will be inaccessible to unauthorised persons. Ensure that there are no obstacles around the workplace that could cause the operator or grass trimmer collision during work.

Working with the grass trimmer

Only start working when the cutting element reaches full speed.

When working, hold the grass trimmer so that the cutting element always moves parallel to the ground.

EN

Set the maximum cutting line length to obtain maximum mowing performance. To do this, turn on the grass trimmer and allow the motor to reach full speed, then gently hit the ground with the spool with the line. This will allow the line to extend, and the blade placed in the line guard will cut it to a suitable length.

Caution! It is forbidden to rest the spool on the ground during work. This will result in consuming the entire line from the spool. If, for any reason, the line cannot extend automatically, stop the grass trimmer motor, disconnect the batteries, and check what caused the jam.

Extend the line whenever it can be heard that the motor reaches higher speed speeds than during normal operation.

It is recommended to move the grass trimmer from right to left during work. Avoid mowing by moving the grass trimmer from left to right. This will allow the operator to avoid ejected mowed grass residues during mowing.

Avoid mowing shrubs and bushes. Working with the grass trimmer near trees may damage the bark. Hitting the stones, bricks, brickworks, or other similar surfaces with the line may lead to the line's very fast wear.

When using the blade, avoid trimming with the upper right quarter of the blade (XIII). This will prevent the grass trimmer from kickback towards the operator if the blade is blocked during work.

The harness enables emergency detachment of the grass trimmer. To do this, pull a red tape near the clamping. The grass trimmer will be detached with the harness catch. Before starting work, detach the catch from the grass trimmer clamp and attach it to the harness (XIV). If the grass trimmer is detached from the harness in an emergency, the device may hit the ground. After each emergency detachment of the grass trimmer from the harness, perform an inspection for damage and rectify any damages before resuming the operation.

Working tips

Maintain balance and proper posture during work. Exercise particular caution when working on a slippery, inclined, or uneven surface.

Continuously monitor the cutting element during work. Do not mow in places that are out of sight.

Before starting work, inspect the workplace thoroughly, remove all loose branches and residues from the previous mowing.

Take regular breaks when working. During operation, the device emits noise and vibration, which impact the device's operator. Taking regular breaks and wearing personal protective equipment such as gloves, hearing protectors and eye protection allow reducing the impact of the device on the operator's well-being.

Start work when healthy and in good shape. In case of nausea, headache, sight problems (e.g., reduced visual range), hearing problems, or dizziness, immediately stop working with the device.

Mow high grass gradually from above; this will reduce the risk of the grass mowed being wound on the spool with the line.

Try to mow the grass only with the line end; this will reduce the risk of the grass mowed being wound on the spool with the line. If, during operation, any part of the grass trimmer or guard is damaged or deformed, replace or repair it before resuming work.

DEVICE MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

Warning! Before starting any activities described below, disconnect the grass trimmer from the power supply. In the case of mains-powered devices, disconnect them from the socket, and for battery-powered devices — disconnect their batteries.

Replacing the cutting line (XV)

Unscrew the spool housing from the grass trimmer spindle. Press both spindle housing lock buttons simultaneously and remove the spool from the housing. Remove the residues of the old line from the spool. Clean the spool, spool guard, spring, and fixing screw from grass residues, soil, and other contaminants.

Prepare a section of the line with the diameter and length shown in the table with technical data. At the middle of the length, pass the line through the gap in the baffle between two parts of the spool. Wind the line on both parts of the spool in an anti-clockwise direction. Leave about 15 cm of the line outside the gaps, which should be passed through the holes in the housing. Close the spool in the housing.

Install the spool with the line according to the procedure described in: "Preparing the grass trimmer for operation".

After each use, inspect the condition of the device with particular attention to the flow capacity of ventilation openings.

Check the placement of all device's components. Tighten all loose screw connections, if any. Check the condition of the cutting element. Clean the cutting element guard and the spool from grass residues. If the cutting element or spool guards are damaged, replace them before performing further work. It is forbidden to use the grass trimmer with damaged guards of the cutting element or spool.

Clean the device's housing with a soft, dry cloth. Clean the housing from grass residues, oil, grease, and other contaminants. Store the disconnected device in a dry and closed room.

Store the device in shaded and dry places with appropriate ventilation preventing steam condensation. The area should not be accessible to unauthorised persons, especially children. During storage, the blades should always be protected with a guard.
