Which operating systems are compatible with the DataStation maxi t.u?

The device is compatible with Windows 98 SE (drivers required), Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows ME, Windows Vista and Mac OS X. For Windows 98 SE, insert the supplied CD and install the drivers before connecting the device.

How to install drivers under Windows 98 SE?

Insert the supplied CD into the drive. If autorun is enabled, the TrekStor menu appears. Otherwise, access the CD via My Computer and launch MENU.EXE. Select the language then click on Install Windows 98 drivers. Follow the instructions and restart the PC after installation.

How to connect the DataStation maxi (3.5 inches)?

Connect the power cable to the power adapter and plug it into the POWER socket on the device. Use the supplied USB cable to connect the device to a USB port on your PC. Turn on the device by briefly pressing the On/Off button.

What if my PC does not recognize the DataStation?

Check that the device is turned on and the USB cable is properly connected. Try a different USB port. If you are using a USB hub, connect directly to the PC. For Windows 98 SE, make sure the drivers are installed. If the problem persists, restart the PC or try a different cable.

How to use the built-in card reader?

Insert the compatible memory card (CF, SD, MMC, MS, XD, etc.) into the appropriate slot. The reader will then appear as an additional drive in My Computer. You can remove the card without prior disconnection, but avoid any data transfer during removal to prevent loss.

How does the built-in USB hub work?

The USB hub allows you to connect other USB devices directly to the DataStation. Simply plug the device into one of the USB ports on the front. Note that the DataStation must be turned on and connected to the computer to use the hub.

How to use the Push-for-Backup function?

Install the Nero BackItUp 2 Essentials software from the included CD. After installation and restart, configure your backup tasks via the wizard. Once configured, press the Push-for-Backup button on the DataStation to immediately start backing up the defined folders. Make sure the device is turned on and connected.

How to format the DataStation?

First back up all your data, as formatting erases everything. Under Windows, right-click on the TREKSTOR drive in My Computer, choose Format..., select the file system (FAT32 or NTFS) and click OK to confirm.

How to safely disconnect the DataStation?

Under Windows, click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the taskbar, select the USB mass storage device, then confirm. Under Mac OS X, drag the drive icon to the Trash. Wait for the removal notification before disconnecting the cable.

What to do in case of data loss or damage?

TrekStor disclaims all liability in case of data loss. To avoid problems, carefully follow the disconnection instructions, use USB cables less than 3 meters long and avoid electrostatic discharges. In case of malfunction, disconnect and reconnect the device. Contact TrekStor support for further assistance.

Thank you for buying the TrekStor DataStation. We are confident that this product will be the source of much enjoyment.

1) Driver installation

Note for users of Windows® Vista, XP, 2000, ME or Mac® OS X:

No additional drivers are necessary for these operating systems. If you use Windows ^® 2000, make sure that you have installed at least Service Pack 4, and Windows ^® XP requires Service Pack 2 or above.

Note for users of Windows ^® 98 (SE):

First install the drivers before connecting the device to your PCI

Insert the provided CD into the CD/DVD ROM drive of your PC.

Note: If the startup function of your system is deactivated, you can access the CD/DVD drive via "MY COMPUTER" and start the program "MENU.EXE" in the main directory of the CD.

• The TrekStor menu appears in a dialog window, then select the desired language by clicking a flag on the bottom left.

Click "INSTALL DRIVER FOR WINDOWS® 98", and follow the installation instructions.

Note: For models with an integrated card reader, independent drivers must be installed for the hard disk and card reader. The sequence of installation does not matter.

Restart your PC to activate the installed drivers.

2) Startup

a) DataStation maxi (3.5 inch)

- Connect the supplied power cable to the power supply, and connect the power supply to the "POWER" connection of the device. Only use the provided USB connection cable to connect the device to a USB port in your PC.

- Turn on the DataStation by briefly pressing the on/off switch ⏻. Hold down the on/off switch ⏻ to turn off the DataStation.

b) DataStation pocket (2.5 inch)

Use the provided USB Y-connection cable to connect the DataStation to your PC. Connect the mini-USB A-plug to the DataStation and both USB A-plugs to the USB port of your PCs. Your operating system will immediately recognize the DataStation and will add the DataStation as a "LOCAL DISK" (or "LOCAL DRIVE") under "MY COMPUTER".

Note: If only one free USB connector is available on your PC or notebook, please proceed as follows:

1) Connect the USB plug (1) to the power supply with a USB charger (e.g., TrekStor USB charger e.f., optionally available in the market) or an active USB hub.
2) Next, connect the USB plug (2) to the data transmission on your PC or notebook.
3) Connect the mini-USB plug (3) to the DataStation.

Note: TrekStor strongly recommends that its customers always insert both USB plugs. Insufficient power which may occur when only one plug is inserted can cause data loss or even mechanical failure of the hard disk. TrekStor assumes no liability or warranty for damage to the DataStation arising from insufficient power.

3) Use of the integrated card reader (optional)

Some models allow you to directly connect different memory cards to your DataStation. The following memory cards are supported:

CF - Compact Flash Card type I / II, MD - MicroDrive, MMC - Multimedia Card, MS - Memory Stick, MS duo - Memory Stick Duo (only with an adapter), MS duo pro - Memory Stick Duo Pro (only with an adapter), MS pro - Memory Stick Pro (only with an adapter), SD - Secure Digital Card, XD Card

To use the memory card, insert it into the provided card slot.

Note: Memory cards can be removed without first logging off from the installed card reader, but never remove the card while data is being transmitted to prevent data loss or damage.

4) Use of the integrated USB hub (optional)

Some models allow you to directly connect different USB devices to your DataStation. Corresponding connections can be found on the front.

Connect the desired USB device with one of the USB ports in the USB hub.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to separate the USB device from the USB hub.

Note: To use the integrated USB hub, the DataStation must be turned on and connected to your computer.

5) Data exchange

After successful startup of the device, a local disk "TREKSTOR" appears under "MY COMPUTER" (Windows®) or on your "DESKTOP" (Mac® OS X). With models that have an installed card reader, up to 4 additional card reader drives are displayed as a "RMSX".

Select the desired files or folders with your mouse.

- Position the mouse pointer over the selected files or folders, and press the right mouse button. Select "C _0 " from the context menu that appears.

Under "Y COMPUTER" / "DESKTOP", select the desired goal (such as the "TREKSTOR" drive).

Click it with your right mouse button, and select "• AST" to start copying. After copying is completed, the data will be available on the target drive.

6) Logging off and disconnecting the TrekStor DataStation from the PC

Windows® 98 (SE): To log off the DataStation, click the left mouse button on the symbol "SAFELY REMOVE - DRIVE" in the information area in the task bar on the bottom right. In the context menu that appears, click the left mouse button on "SAFELY REMOVE" to select it. This removes the DataStation from the operating system of your computer. You can now disconnect the DataStation from your PC.

Windows® Vista/XP/2000/ME: At the bottom right on the task bar, click the left mouse button on the symbol "SAFELY" to select it. This removes the DataStation from the operating system of your computer. You can now disconnect the DataStation from your PC.

Mac® OS X: You need to remove the drive from the Desktop before you disconnect it or turn it off. Click on the relevant drive symbol, and drag it to the trash symbol.

Note: Please follow the recommended logoff procedure to prevent damage to the device or data loss.

7) Formatting the hard disk

Important: Back up all the data on your hard disk before formatting it.

Note: All the data on the disk will be deleted when you format it.

The DataStation can be formatted like any other hard disk in Windows ^® .

Under My Computer, right-click on the local disk "• RST"

Select "• ℜ.E." from the context menu that appears.

Left click on the "•TAR\$" button, and confirm that you want to format by clicking the "OK" button.

8) Direct Push-for-Backup™ function (optional)

With the direct Push-for-Backup™ function, pushing a button backs up previously selected files and folders from your computer on the DataStation.

• Before you can use the backup function, the necessary backup software has to be installed on your computer. Insert the accompanying CD, and select "NERO BACKITUP 2 ESSENTIALS" from the menu that appears. Follow now the installation instructions.
  Note: Do not change the set serial number.
• Restart your computer after the backup software is installed.
  • Make sure that the DataStation is connected to the computer and turned on.
• Start the backup assistant "NRO BACKITUP 2 ESSENTIALS" by going to "START" → "PROGRAMS". However, the first time it is used, you can start it directly by pushing the Push-for-Backup™ button (☐).
• Use the assistant to configure your backup jobs. You can find instructions in the manual on the CD entitled "NERO BACKITUP 2" and in the help function of the backup program.

Note: Be aware that the assistant only offers support for the Push-for-Backup™ button when the DataStation is connected and turned on.

- The backup jobs you create with the assistant are automatically executed at the planned time. When you press the Push-for-Backup™ button ☐ on the DataStation, you immediate start the data backup. All configured backup jobs are executed sequentially.

Notes:

Do not use USB cables longer than 3 meters.

- In certain circumstances, exposing the device to an electrostatic discharge may interrupt the data transfer between the device and the computer and impair the functions of the device. If this occurs, the device should be unplugged from the USB port and then plugged in again..

Note on the DataStation maxi t.uch:

Given the very wide variety of different memory cards/USB devices, TrekStor cannot guarantee compatibility with every memory card/USB device. The integrated card reader/USB hub is therefore only approved for use with memory cards and USB devices that have been released by TrekStor. A list of approved memory cards/USB devices can be found under http://www.trekstor.de.
