How do I use the GBC MultiBind 420 binding machine?

Tips on use

The cutting blades of your MultiBind 420 were coated with oil during manufacture in order to protect against corrosion and to ensure easy running.

Before using the unit properly for the first time, it is advisable to carry out several punching operations using old paper in order to remove all traces of the oil from the components.
Test the punching results using old paper before you punch the final document.
Use only original GBC accessories and parts.

The unit is maintenance-free when used correctly for its intended application.

YOUR SAFETY AS WELL AS THE SAFETY OF OTHERS IS IMPORTANT TO ACCO BRANDS EUROPE. IN THIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL AND ON THE PRODUCT ARE IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGES. READ THESE MESSAGES CAREFULLY.

Please note that your MultiBind 420 has been designed exclusively for punching and binding paper material and PVC plastic foils. Only use the unit for this purpose and do not attempt to process any other materials. This will ensure a long service life and prevent any damage to the mechanical function of your binding machine.

In order to avoid overloading your machine, please refer to the maximum punch guide located on the front of your machine before punching.
When punching PVC/PP covers, we recommend the cover be punched with some paper either side.
DO NOT punch metallic objects such as staples or paper clips.
Please empty the waste tray regularly.
Ensure that the machine is operated on a flat stable surface.
Never lift the machine by the punching handle. Always use the hand grips located on the side of the machine.
To avoid risk of injury DO NOT put your fingers into the wire binding channel.
The binder is not to be exposed to temperature / humidity conditions that would cause condensation. Maximum ambient temperature: 40°C

Setting up

Place the unit on a stable surface.
Fold up the document stand (cover) (Fig 1).
Push the two transport locks of the transport guard inwards (Fig 1.2).
Move the punch handle upwards until the limit stop (Fig 1.3).
Move the binding lever upwards until the limit stop. A spring in the unit presses the binding lever a few centimetres to the side so that you can use this easily (Fig 2).

Your MultiBind 420 is now ready for use.

Transporting or storing the unit

1 Locking the unit

Press the binder lever towards the unit and fold this downwards (Fig 17.1).
Push down the punching lever (Fig 17.2).
Push the two latches outwards to lock the punching lever (Fig 17.3). Make sure that the punch handle can no longer be moved.
Fold down the document stand (Fig 17.4).

2 Transporting or storing the unit

You can now use the punch handle as a carrying handle. This lets you transport the unit easily and it can now be stored either in an upright position or lying down (Fig 20).

Warning: Danger of injury! Before transporting the unit, always make sure that the punching lever has been correctly locked.

Emptying the clippings tray

1 Lock the unit (Fig 18).
2 Place the unit in an upright position and fold out the tray on the underside of the unit and empty it (Fig 18).
3 Replace the tray until the spring locks into place (Fig 19).

Warranty

ACCO Brands Europe (ACCO) warrants its products and their parts against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a period of 24 months from the original date of purchase.

During this period we will repair or replace a defective product or part subject to the following warranty conditions:

The warranty applies only to defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and does not extend to damage to the Product or parts which result from:-

alteration, repair, modification or service carried out by anyone other than an authorised ACCO service centre.
accident, neglect, abuse or misuse owing to failure to comply with the normal operating procedures for a product of this type.

Depending on the diagnostics and the model type, we will either arrange a service call by an engineer or arrange with you return of the product to ACCO. ACCO will, at its discretion, in accordance with law, either

- repair the shredder using either new or refurbished parts, or - replace the shredder with a new or refurbished shredder that is equivalent to the shredder being replaced.

Nothing in this Warranty shall have the effect of excluding the liability of ACCO in respect of death and personal injury caused by the negligence of ACCO. This Warranty is offered (subject to these terms and conditions) in addition to, and does not affect, your statutory rights.

How to punch documents for WireBind 34 and ClickBind (34 holes, round)

1 Set the paper edge guide

- Set the paper edge guide to the required paper format in such a way that the edges of the document are not punched (Fig. 3).

The graphic display on the machine will help you.

2 Smooth edges and insert the document into the punching channel

Tap the edge of the document against a flat surface to ensure that all the sheets are aligned.
Place the document into the punching channel ensuring that the side to be punched is facing downwards in the front punching channel. (max. 12 sheets of 80g paper or 2 PVC plastic foils of 0.2mm each) (Fig. 4).

3 Punch

Press the punch handle downwards (Fig. 5).
Move the punch handle upwards again and remove the punched document.

BINDING TIP!

Simultaneous binding and punching:

You can insert the punched material into a wire/click before you punch the remainder of your document.

How to punch documents for CombBind and WireBind 21 (21 holes, rectangular)

1 Set the paper edge guide

- Set the paper edge guide in such a way that the edges of your document will not be punched (Fig. 6).

The graphic display on the machine will help you. Guiding lines marked on the document stand make it easier for you to align your document in DIN A4 and DIN A5 formats.

2 Smooth edges and insert the document into the punching channel

Tap the edge of the document against a flat surface to ensure that all the sheets are aligned.
Place the document into the punching channel ensuring that the side to be punched is facing downwards in the back punching channel. (max. 20 sheets of 80g paper or 2 PVC plastic foils of 0.2mm each) (Fig. 7).

3 Punching

- Press the punch handle downwards (Fig. 5).

Move the punch handle upwards again and remove the punched document.

BINDING TIP!

Simultaneous binding and punching:

You can insert the punched material into a wire/click before you punch the remainder of your document.

How to bind using plastic combs

1 Select the correct comb size

- Insert the entire document to be bound into the binder channel. Press the binding lever downwards and read off the required comb size from the scale on the mobile pressure bar. Use the table if you intend to bind more than approx. 125 sheets of 80g paper (comb larger than 14mm).

2 Insert and open the comb

Slide the comb opening lock downwards (Fig. 9).
Place the plastic comb with the open side facing upwards into the comb holder (Fig. 10).
Press the binding lever downwards so that the comb opens fully and the material to be bound can be inserted easily.

If you are only intending to bind a single document, then continue with Step 4 below. If you wish to bind several identical documents simultaneously (series) then continue with Step 3.

3 Restricting the comb opening width

If you need to bind several documents which all require the same size comb it is more productive to set the comb opening lock.

Open you comb as usual using the binding lever.
Slide the comb opening lock upwards until it stops and let it lock in this position (Fig. 16).
The comb binding lever will now always open a comb at this size setting.

4 Load the punched paper onto the comb

- Load each punched paper stack onto the comb (Fig. 11).

5 Close the comb

Move the binding lever back to its uppermost position
Remove you bound document from the unit (Fig. 12).

If you wish to replace or add individual pages you can always open and re-close the comb again (see steps 2-5).

How to bind using wire/click

1 Select the correct wire size

- Insert the material to be bound into the binder channel and read of the required wire size from the scale on the mobile pressure bar (Fig. 8).

2 Load the wire

- Position the wire in the holder (Fig. 13).

3 Load the punched paper

- Load each punched paper stack onto the spine

BINDING TIP!

Place the back cover page (B) on top of the front cover page (A) so that the opening of the wire or click cannot be seen later (Fig. 14).

4 Closing the wire/click

Wires are intended for one-off use only. In contrast to the plastic combs and click spines these cannot be re-opened and closed.

Slide the button downwards (Fig. 9)
Hold the binding material with your left hand in the binder channel in such a way that the wire stops with the open end facing down.
With your right hand press the binding lever down as far as is necessary until the wire is perfectly closed (Fig. 15).
In the case of click close the rings manually or using the zipper supplied with the clicks.

5 Restricting the closing width of wire

Many identical documents (series) can be bound easily and simply by restricting the closing width.

Determine how far you have to press the binding lever downwards until the wire is perfectly closed (Step 4). Keep the binding lever in this position.
Slide the button upwards until it stops and let it lock in this position (Fig 16).

You can now press down the binding lever to its stop position and each document in the series is provided with a perfectly closed wire.
