What types of debris should not be vacuumed with the HiKOKI R36DA?
It is forbidden to vacuum liquids, sparks, high-temperature objects (lit cigarette), flammable substances (gasoline, thinner), explosive substances, sharp objects (nails, glass), and conductive dust (metal powder).
How to clean the vacuum filter?
Remove the dust compartment, then the filter. Wash it with cold or lukewarm water without detergent. Do not use a washing machine, hot water, fire, or compressed air gun. Let it dry out of direct sunlight before reassembling.
What to do if the vacuum cleaner stops suddenly?

Can the vacuum be used outdoors or in the rain?

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR THE CORDLESS CLEANER

☐ In order to prevent accidents, such as fires, electric shock, and injuries, be sure to follow the “Safety Precautions” stated below.
Before use, read all of the "Safety Precautions" and use the appliance correctly according to the instructions.
- Be sure to keep this instructions manual in the where it can be consulted by the user at any time.

WARNING

  1. Keep the workplace clean. Littered place or workbench may cause accidents.
  2. Pay attention to the situation around the workplace as well. Make the workplace bright enough. Do not use the appliance in places with infl ammable liquid or gas.
  3. Keep children away. Do not let other persons than the operator touch the cleaner or the cord. Keep persons other than the operator away from the workplace.
  4. Use the cleaner suitable for the work. Use the appliance only for the specified applications.
  5. Do not handle the power cord roughly.
  6. Do not carry the charger with only the power cord or pull the plug from the socket while holding the power cord.
  7. Keep the power cord away from heat, oil and sharp corners.
  8. The cleaner should be maintained carefully. Replacement of accessories should follow the instructions manual. Regularly check the power cord of the charger and ask your local retailer or authorized servicing agent for repairs in the event of it being damaged. If an extension cord is used, check it periodically, and when damaged, replace it.
  9. In the following cases, switch off the cleaner and disconnect the battery from the cleaner: The cleaner is not used or it is sent for repair. Accessories, such as an extension pipe and a filter, are replaced. Danger is expected.
  10. Avoid sudden starting. Do not carry the appliance which is connected to the power supply with your finger placed on the switch. Confirm that the switch is off before insert the battery.
  11. Do the work with enough care. When you use the cleaner, pay attention to the handling method, how to do the work, the surrounding situation, etc. and perform the operation in a cautious manner.
  12. Check for any damaged part.
    Before use, check for any damages in the protective cover or other parts and confi rm whether the appliance operates normally and performs specifi ed functions.
    ☐ Check for any abnormalities in all places that may affect the operation, the position adjustment and clamping state of movable portions, damaged parts or attachment state.
    ○ Replacement and repair of damaged protective cover and other parts should follow the provisions of the handling instructions. If there are no such provisions in the manual, please request repair from your local retailer or authorized servicing agent.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE OF THE CORDLESS CLEANER

The precautions common to the cleaners have been described. For the cleaners for electric tools, follow further precautions described below:

WARNING

  1. Prevent the appliance from sucking in the following:
    ○ Liquids (e.g., water, oil) or damp debris.
    ○ Generated spark during metal grinding or cutting.
    ○ High temperature things, such as lighted cigarette.
    ○ Inflammable substances (gasoline, thinner, benzine, kerosene, paint, etc.), explosive substances (nitroglycerine, etc.), combustible substances (aluminum, zinc, magnesium, titanium, red phosphorus, yellow phosphorus, celluloid, etc.)
  2. Sharp things, such as nails, razors or glass.
    Solidification materials, such as cement powder and toner, and conductive fine dusts, such as metal powder and carbon powder.
  3. Set the fi Iter correctly before use. Do not use the appliance without the fi Iter or with it set in a wrong position, or do not use a torn fi Iter. May cause failures, such as motor burnout.
  4. Do not use the appliance with its suction opening, air inlet or exhaust opening obstructed. The temperature of the motor may rise abnormally, causing troubles such as deformation of parts or motor burnout.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY WARNINGS

  1. Always charge the battery at a temperature of 0^ C – 40^ C. A temperature of less than 0^ C will result in over charging which is dangerous. The battery cannot be charged at a temperature higher than 40^ C. The most suitable temperature for charging is that of 20^ C – 25^ C.
  2. Do not use the charger continuously. When one charging is completed, leave the charger for about 15 minutes before the next charging of battery.
  3. Do not allow foreign matter to enter the hole for connecting the rechargeable battery.

  4. Never disassemble the rechargeable battery and charger.

  5. Never short-circuit the rechargeable battery. Shortcircuting the battery will cause a great electric current and overheat. It results in burn or damage to the battery.

  6. Using an exhausted battery will damage the charger.

  7. Do not insert object into the air ventilation slots of the charger. Inserting metal objects or infl ammables into the charger air ventilation slots will result in electrical shock hazard or damaged charger.

  8. Do not expose directly your eye to the light by looking into the light.

If your eye is continuously exposed to the light, your eye will be hurt.

  1. Do not give a strong shock to the switch panel or break it. It may lead to a trouble.

  2. Do not use the product if the tool or the battery terminals (battery mount) are deformed.

Installing the battery could cause a short circuit that could result in smoke emission or ignition.

  1. Keep the tool's terminals (battery mount) free of swarf and dust.

- Prior to use, make sure that swarf and dust have not collected in the area of the terminals.

During use, try to avoid swarf or dust on the tool from falling on the battery.

When suspending operation or after use, do not leave the tool in an area where it may be exposed to falling swarf or dust.

○ Wipe clean any dust, dirt, water or other liquid which may collect on the battery connector.

Doing so could cause a short circuit that could result in smoke emission or ignition.

  1. Do not dispose of the battery in fire. If the battery is burnt, it may explode.

  2. Bring the battery to the shop from which it was purchased as soon as the post-charging battery life becomes too short for practical use. Do not dispose of the exhausted battery.

CAUTION ON LITHIUM-ION BATTERY

To extend the lifetime, the lithium-ion battery equips with the protection function to stop the output.

In the cases of 1 to 3 described below, when using this product, even if it is switched on, the motor may stop. This is not the trouble but the result of protection function.

  1. When the battery power remaining runs out, the motor stops.

In such a case, charge it up immediately.

  1. If the tool is overloaded, the motor may stop. In this case, switch the tool off and eliminate causes of overloading. After that, you can use it again.

  2. If the battery is overheated under overload work, the battery power may stop.

In this case, stop using the battery and let the battery cool. After that, you can use it again.

Furthermore, please heed the following warning and caution.

WARNING

In order to prevent any battery leakage, heat generation, smoke emission, explosion and ignition beforehand, please be sure to heed the following precautions.

  1. Make sure that swarf and dust do not collect on the battery.

During work make sure that swarf and dust do not on the battery.

○ Make sure that any swarf and dust falling on the power tool during work do not collect on the battery.

- Do not store an unused battery in a location exposed to swarf and dust.

Before storing a battery, remove any swarf and dust that may adhere to it and do not store it together with metal parts (screws, nails, etc.).

  1. Do not pierce battery with a sharp object such as a nail, strike with a hammer, step on, throw or subject the battery to severe physical shock.

  2. Do not use an apparently damaged or deformed battery.

  3. Do not use the battery in reverse polarity.

  4. Do not connect directly to an electrical outlets or car cigarette lighter sockets.

  5. Do not use the battery for a purpose other than those specified.

  6. If the battery charging fails to complete even when a specified recharging time has elapsed, immediately stop further recharging.

  7. Do not put or subject the battery to high temperatures or high pressure such as into a microwave oven, dryer, or high pressure container.

  8. Keep away from fire immediately when leakage or foul odor are detected.

  9. Do not use in a location where strong static electricity generates.

  10. If there is battery leakage, foul odor, heat generated, discolored or deformed, or in any way appears abnormal during use, recharging or storage, immediately remove it from the equipment or battery charger, and stop use.

  11. Do not immerse the battery or allow any fluids to flow inside. Conductive liquid ingress, such as water, cause damage resulting in fire or explosion. Store your battery in a cool, dry place, away from combustible and flammable items. Corrosive gas atmospheres must be avoided.

CAUTION

  1. If liquid leaking from the battery gets into your eyes, do not rub your eyes and wash them well with fresh clean water such as tap water and contact a doctor immediately.

If left untreated, the liquid may cause eye-problems.

  1. If liquid leaks onto your skin or clothes, wash well with clean water such as tap water immediately.

There is a possibility that this can cause skin irritation.

  1. If you find rust, foul odor, overheating, discolor, deformation, and/or other irregularities when using the battery for the first time, do not use and return it to your supplier or vendor.

WARNING

If a conductive foreign matter enters in the terminal of lithium ion battery, the battery may be shorted, causing fire. When storing the lithium ion battery, obey surely the rules of following contents.

- Do not place conductive debris, nail and wires such as iron wire and copper wire in the storage case.

To prevent shorting from occurring, load the battery in the tool or insert securely the battery cover for storing until the ventilator is not seen.

REGARDING LITHIUM-ION BATTERY TRANSPORTATION

When transporting a lithium-ion battery, please observe the following precautions.

WARNING

Notify the transporting company that a package contains a lithium-ion battery, inform the company of its power output and follow the instructions of the transportation company when arranging transport.

○ Lithium-ion batteries that exceed a power output of 100 Wh are considered to be in the freight classification of Dangerous Goods and will require special application procedures.

○ For transportation abroad, you must comply with international law and the rules and regulations of the destination country.

NOTE

○ To suppress noise when using the appliance, switch to 1 mode.

When using 3 mode on certain surfaces, such as carpets, the suction force may make the action feel heavy. If this occurs, switch to 2 or 1 mode instead.

Twisting in the opposite direction could result in detaching the dust case from the housing.

To even more effectively scrape off the dust, repeatedly turn the dust case back and forth (2 to 3 times or more).

Holding the unit so that the dust case does not detach from the housing, slightly and repeatedly turn the dust case in the indicated directions.

THE INDICATOR LAMP (Fig. 9)

Notice about filter cleaning

If the filter becomes clogged and suction power decreases, the indicator lamp will flash.

And the main unit will make a pulsing sound.

However, this is not a sign of a fault.

If this happens, promptly empty the dust case and clean the filter. (See Fig. 11, Fig. 12, and “MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION” on page 9.)

Notice about intake port blockage

If the intake port becomes blocked during use - for example while vacuuming carpets - the main unit will make a pulsing sound, the indicator lamp will flash. However, this is not a sign of a fault.

Clear the blockage from the intake port if this happens.

NOTE

If running continuously when the filter becomes clogged or the intake port becomes blocked, the appliance will stop running by temperature protection of the motor.

MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

WARNING

☐ For inspection and maintenance, be sure to turn off the switch and disconnect the battery.
○ Do not work with wet hands. May cause electric shock or injuries.

1. Cleaning the filter

CAUTION

○ Do not wash the filter in a washing machine.
○ Do not wash the filter in hot water or dry it by fire.
Do not detach the fan filter and the filter holder. If the vacuuming efficiency is poor even when the dust case has been emptied, remove the filter and wash it in cold or warm water. (The water should not be hot to the touch.) After washing, dry out of direct sunlight. (Fig. 13-a) If there is dust on the fan filter, hold the cleaner with the fan filter pointing downwards to keep dust from entering the motor and lightly clean with a small brush such as a used toothbrush. Do not brush vigorously. (Fig. 13-b)

NOTE

○ Do not use gasoline, thinner, benzene or kerosene as they can melt plastic.
○ Do not use an air gun or similar tool to clean the filter, fan filter or the appliance itself. (Fig. 13-c)

Doing so could push dirt into the appliance and cause malfunction.

2. Inspecting the mounting screws

Regularly inspect all mounting screws and ensure that they are properly tightened. Should any of the screws be loose, retighten them immediately. Failure to do so could result in serious hazard.

3. Maintenance of the motor

The motor unit winding is the very "heart" of the power tool.

Exercise due care to ensure the winding does not become damaged and/or wet with oil or water.

4. Inspection of terminals

Check to make sure that swarf and dust have not collected on the terminals.

On occasion check prior, during and after operation.

CAUTION

Remove any swarf or dust which may have collected on the terminals.

Failure to do so may result in malfunction.

5. Cleaning of the outside

When the tool is stained, wipe with a soft dry cloth or a cloth moistened with soapy water. Do not use chloric solvents, gasoline or paint thinner, as they melt plastics.

6. Storage

Store the cordless cleaner in a place in which the temperature is less than 50^ C and out of reach of children.

When storing the appliance in a vertical position, hook the strap to a hanger.

NOTE

○ Do not store in a location where children can easily reach or take out the appliance.
- Do not store in a damp location or in an area exposed to rainfall.
○ Do not store in direct sunlight or in a location where temperatures may suddenly change
○ Do not store in a location with volatile materials that could ignite or explode.
○ Do not stand the appliance against a wall without using the strap to fix it in place. (Fig. 14)

Failure to do so may result in damage from a fall.

Important notice on the batteries for the HiKOKI cordless power tools

Please always use one of our designated genuine batteries. We cannot guarantee the safety and performance of our cordless power tool when used with batteries other than these designated by us, or when the battery is disassembled and modified (such as disassembly and replacement of cells or other internal parts).

GUARANTEE

We guarantee HiKOKI Power Tools in accordance with statutory/country specific regulation. This guarantee does not cover defects or damage due to misuse, abuse, or normal wear and tear. In case of complaint, please send the Power Tool, undismantled, with the GUARANTEE CERTIFICATE found at the end of this Handling instruction, to a HiKOKI Authorized Service Center.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Use the inspections in the table below if the tool does not operate normally. If this does not remedy the problem, consult your dealer or the HiKOKI Authorized Service Center.

Symptom Possible cause Remedy
Tool doesn't run No remainingbattery power Charge the battery.
Tool suddenly stoppedFan clogged with dust, causing overloadContact place of purchase and arrange for dismantling and cleaning.
The battery is overheated.Let the battery cool down.
The motor is overheated.Dispose the dust and clean the filter. And then let the motor cool down.
Poor suctionDust case is full.Dispose the dust.
Nozzle is plugged.Remove the obstruction.
Nozzle or extension pipe is loose.Firmly tighten the unit.
Nozzle or extension pipe is cracked or damaged.Exchange the unit with a new one.
Filter is clogged.Turn the dust case and scrape off dust with dust removal blade, or remove the fi lter and lightly strike it or wash with water.
Exhaust or the main unit is hotThe motor is overheating because the dust case is full, or the fi lter is clogged.Dispose the dust. Or else, clean the fi lter.
Abnormal noise/foul odorFilter in not properly installed, resulting in foreign matter getting into the motor.Remove the dust case, point the intake port downward and gently shake to remove foreign matter and dust.Should abnormal noise/foul odor persist, the motor may be damaged. Immediately discontinue use and arrange for repairs.
Battery cannot be installedAttempting to install a battery other than that specifi ed for the tool.Please install a multi volt type battery.
