Safety Notes Explanation of symbols Read all safety warnings and all in- structions. Failure to follow the warn- ings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious inju- ry. Wear eye protection and stout shoes at all times while operating the ma- chine. Keep bystanders a safe distance away from the machine. Do not use the machine in the rain or leave it outdoors when it is raining. Warning! The cutting means contin- ues to move after the motor is switched off. Only use the battery charger indoors. General Power Tool Safety Warnings Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in elec- tric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Clut- tered or dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distrac- tions can cause you to lose control.

2) Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radia- tors, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges and moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for out- door use. Use of a cord suitable for out- door use reduces the risk of electric shock. f) If operating a power tool in a damp loca- tion is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. b) Use personal protective equipment. Al- ways wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protec- tion used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or bat- tery pack, picking up or carrying the WARNING OBJ_BUCH-1077-002.book Page 18 Wednesday, January 27, 2010 4:40 PMEnglish | 19 Bosch Power Tools F 016 L70 608 | (27.1.10) tool. Carrying power tools with your fin- ger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites acci- dents. d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench be- fore turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal inju- ry. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unex- pected situations. f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose cloth- ing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. g) If devices are provided for the connec- tion of dust extraction and collection fa- cilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

4) Power tool use and care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the cor- rect power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was de- signed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be re- paired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjust- ments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfa- miliar with the power tool or these in- structions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e) Maintain power tools. Check for mis- alignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condi- tion that may affect the power tool’s op- eration. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Prop- erly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these in- structions, taking into account the work- ing conditions and the work to be per- formed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

5) Battery tool use and care

a) Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with anoth- er battery pack. b) Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any oth- er battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire. c) When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like pa- per clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to anoth- er. Shorting the battery terminals togeth- er may cause burns or a fire. d) Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additional- ly seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qual- ified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. The vibration emission level given in this infor- mation sheet has been measured in accordance with a standardised test given in EN 60745 and may be used to compare one tool with another. It may be used for a preliminary assessment of exposure. The declared vibration emission level repre- sents the main applications of the tool. However if the tool is used for different applications, with different accessories or poorly maintained, the vibration emission may differ. This may signifi- cantly increase the exposure level over the total working period. An estimation of the level of exposure to vibra- tion should also take into account the times when the tool is switched off or when it is run- ning but not actually doing the job. This may sig- nificantly reduce the exposure level over the to- tal working period. Identify additional safety measures to protect the operator from the effects of vibration such as: maintain the tool and the accessories, keep the hands warm, organisation of work patterns. Switch off before adjusting or cleaning. The blades continue to move for a few seconds after the garden product is switched off. Caution! Do not touch the moving blades. Battery Charging (see figure A) f Do not use other battery chargers. The sup- plied battery charger is designed for the Lith- ium-Ion battery in your garden product. f Observe the mains voltage! The voltage of the power supply must correspond with the data given on the nameplate of the battery charger. Battery chargers marked with 230 V can also be operated with 220 V. f The voltage range of the charger is 100–240 V. Ensure that the plug matchs the outlet. Note: The battery is supplied partially charged. To ensure full capacity of the battery, complete- ly charge the battery in the battery charger be- fore using your power tool for the first time. The lithium ion battery can be charged at any time without reducing its service life. Interrupt- ing the charging procedure does not damage the battery. The “Electronic Cell Protection (ECP)” protects the lithium ion battery against deep discharging. When the battery is run down or discharged, the garden product is shut off by means of a protec- tive circuit: The blade no longer moves. Do not continue to press the On/Off switch after the garden product has been automatically switched off. The battery can be damaged. Plug the mains plug of the battery charger into a socket outlet and the charger plug 6 into the socket 15 on the rear side of the handle, in one way only. The charging procedure starts as soon as the charger plug 6 of the battery charger is inserted into the socket 15. The battery charge-control indicator 2 indicates the charging progress. During the charging proc- ess, the indicator flashes green. When the bat- tery charge-control indicator 2 lights up green continuously, the battery is fully charged. During the charging procedure, the handle of the garden product warms up. This is normal. Disconnect the battery charger from the mains supply when not using it for longer periods. The garden product cannot be used during the charge procedure; it is not defective when inop- erative during the charging procedure. f Protect the battery charger against mois- ture! Pole cart (accessory or supplied with “Grass Shear & Pole Cart”) f The pole cart is designed only for use with the grass shear at ground level. f Do not use the pole cart with the shrub shear or above ground level. Working Advice f Hold the garden product away from your- self. Stand in a secure and stable position. f For more tips on cutting please refer to website www.bosch-pt.com. Anti Blocking (shrub shear only) The garden product has a patented feature which works as follows: If the blade stalls on a tough material, the load of the motor increases. The intelligent micro- electronics senses this overload condition and repeatedly reverses the motor, in order to pre- vent stalling and to cut the material through. This audible reversing cut action continues for up to 3 s. After cutting through, the garden product con- tinues in its normal mode, or in case the over- load condition continues the blades automati- cally stop in the open position (e. g. in case a piece of metal fence accidentally blocks the gar- den product). Cutting Hedges (shrub shear only) Before cutting check the hedge for foreign ob- jects e. g. wire fences. Cut stems up to 8 mm in thickness. When cut- ting, move steadily along the line of cut, so that stems are fed directly into the cutter blades. The double edge of the cutting blade enables cutting to either direction, or with a side to side motion. After use replace the blade transport guard. Recommended times – Cut hedges with deciduous leaves in June and October. – Cut evergreen hedges in April and August. – Cut conifer and other fast growing shrubs ap- prox. every six weeks from May onwards. Edging (grass shear only) (see figure D) Guide the garden product along the edge of the lawn. Do not allow the blade to contact paved surfaces, stones or garden walls, since this will wear the blade rapidly. For larger lawn it is advisable to use the pole cart (available as an accessory or supplier with “grass shear & pole cart” set). After use replace the blade transport guard. Maintenance and Service Maintenance and Cleaning f Warning! Switch off before adjusting or cleaning. The blades continue to move for a few seconds after the garden product is switched off. Caution! Do not touch the moving blades. f For safe and proper working, always keep the garden product clean. f Always wear protective gloves when using, adjusting or cleaning the garden product.
