Safe operating practices

1. Training

a) Read the instructions carefully. Familiarise yourself with the correct use and operation of the tool.
b) Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the tool. Local regulations may restrict the age of the operator.
c) The operator or users are responsible for accidents or hazards that may occur to other people or their property.

2. Preparation

a) Before use, check the power cord and extension cord for signs of damage or wear. If the cord is damaged during use, disconnect it from the power supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE POWER. Do not use the appliance if the cord is damaged or worn.
b) Before use, visually check the tool for damaged, missing or improperly fitted guards or covers.
c) Never operate the tool while people, especially children, or pets are nearby.

3. Operation

a) Keep the power and extension cords away from the cutting head.
b) Wear eye protection and sturdy footwear at all times while operating the tool.

c) Avoid using the tool in adverse weather conditions, especially when there is a risk of lightning.
d) Use the tool only in broad daylight or in good artificial light.
e) Never operate the tool with damaged guards or covers or without them in place.
f) Start the motor only when hands and feet are away from the cutting head.
g) Always disconnect the tool from the power supply (i.e., remove the mains plug, remove the disabling device or removable battery) whenever it is left unattended, before clearing an obstruction, before checking, cleaning or working on it, after hitting a foreign object or whenever it begins to vibrate abnormally.
h) Be careful not to injure your feet and hands with the blades.
i) Always ensure that the ventilation openings are clear of debris.

  1. Maintenance and storage

a) Disconnect the tool from the power supply (i.e. remove the mains plug, remove the disabling device or the removable battery) before carrying out maintenance or cleaning tasks.
b) Use only spare parts and accessories supplied by the manufacturer.
c) Check and clean the tool regularly. Have the tool repaired only by an authorised technician.

  1. Work area safety
    a) Keep the work area clean and well illuminated. Cluttered or dark areas may cause accidents.
    b) Do not operate power tools in explosive environments, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks that can ignite dust or fumes.
    c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can make you lose control of the tool.

  2. Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the socket. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching sockets will reduce the risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces, like pipes, radiators, stoves and refrigerators. There is a higher risk of electric shock if your body is in touch with earthed surfaces.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not misuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep the cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords can increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Using the appropriate cord for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a power supply protected by a residual current device (RCD). The use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3. Personal safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. Lack of attention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-slip safety footwear, helmet or hearing protection, used under the appropriate conditions, will reduce personal injuries.
c) Avoid unintentional start-up. Make sure the switch is in the off position before connecting the tool to a power source and/or battery, or before picking it up or transporting it. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in power tools with the switch in the on position may cause accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before switching on the power tool. Leaving a wrench or key attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overstretch yourself. Always keep your feet firmly on the ground and maintain a proper balance. This will provide better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Wear appropriate clothes. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and protective gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can get caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Dust vacuuming can reduce dust-related hazards.

4. Power tool use and maintenance

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the appropriate power tool for the required application. The proper power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories or storing it. These preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow people unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate it. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools and accessories. Check if the moving parts are misaligned or stuck, if there are broken pieces or any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp edges are less likely to jam and are easier to handle.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and drill bits, etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

5. Service

a) Have your power tool repaired by a qualified technician using only original spare parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
b) When repairing a power tool, use only identical spare parts. Follow the instructions in the maintenance section of the manual. Use of unauthorised parts or failure to follow maintenance instructions may create a risk of electric shock or injury.

General chainsaw safety warnings:

a) Keep all body parts away from the saw chain when the chainsaw is running. Before starting the chainsaw, make sure that the saw chain is not in contact with anything. Lack of attention while operating the chainsaw may cause entanglement of your clothing or body with the saw chain.
b) Always hold the chainsaw with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on the front handle. Holding the chainsaw with the opposite hand increases the risk of personal injury and should never be done.
c) Hold the chainsaw by the insulated gripping surfaces only, as the saw chain may come into contact with hidden wiring. Saw chains coming into contact with “live” wires may cause exposed metal parts of the chainsaw to be “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.
d) Wear eye protection. The use of further protective equipment for hearing, head, hands, legs and feet is recommended. Proper protective equipment will reduce personal injury from flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain.
e) Do not operate a chainsaw in a tree, on a ladder, from a rooftop or from any unstable support. Operation of a

chainsaw in this manner could result in serious personal injury.

f) Always keep proper footing and operate the chainsaw only when standing on a fixed, secure and level surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces may cause a loss of balance or control of the chainsaw.
g) When cutting a branch that is under tension, watch for spring-back. When tension in the wood fibres is released, the spring-loaded branch may strike the operator and/or throw the chainsaw out of control.
h) Use extreme caution when cutting bushes and saplings. Thin material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you or cause you to lose your balance.
i) Carry the chainsaw by the front handle, switched off and away from your body. When transporting or storing the chainsaw, always fit the guide bar cover. Proper handling of the chainsaw will reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving saw chain.
j) Follow the instructions for lubricating, tensioning and changing the saw chain and guide bar. An improperly tensioned or lubricated saw chain may either break or increase the chance of kickback.
k) Cut wood only. Do not use the chainsaw for purposes for which it was not intended. For example: do not use the chainsaw to cut metal, plastic, masonry or non-wood building materials. Use of the chainsaw for operations other than those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
1) Follow all instructions when clearing jammed material, storing or servicing the chainsaw. Make sure that the switch is off and the battery is removed. Unexpected operation of the chainsaw while clearing jammed material or maintenance may result in serious personal injury.

Causes and prevention of operator kickback:

Kickback may occur when the tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut.

In some cases, contact with the tip may cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator.

Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may quickly push the latter back towards the operator.

Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the chainsaw, which could result in serious personal injury. Do not rely solely on the safety devices built into the chainsaw.

As a chainsaw user, you should take several steps to ensure that your cutting jobs are free from accident or injury.

Kickback is the result of chainsaw misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below:

a) Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and fingers encircling the handles, with both hands on the chainsaw and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken. Do not let go of the chainsaw.
b) Do not overreach and do not cut above shoulder height. This helps to avoid unintentional contact with the tip and enables better control of the chainsaw in unexpected situations.
c) Use only replacement guide bars and saw chains specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement of guide bars and saw chains may result in chain breakage and/or kickback.
d) Follow the saw chain manufacturer's sharpening and

maintenance instructions. Decreasing the depth gauge height can lead to increased backlash.

2. BEFORE USE

  • This appliance comes in a packaging designed to protect it during transport. Remove the appliance from its box. You can keep the original box and other packaging materials in a safe place to prevent damage to the appliance if you need to transport it in the future. If you wish to dispose of the original packaging, make sure all items are recycled properly.
  • Check that all parts and components are included and in good condition. If any of them are missing or damaged, please contact Cecotec's Official Technical Support Service immediately.

3. INSTALLATION

EXTENSION CABLE SUPPORT

During use, the extension cable may be pulled while moving. To prevent the cable from disconnecting from the chainsaw, a cable retention hook has been provided on the housing.

NOTE: This support is designed solely for the extension cable, not for the chainsaw's integral power cable.

Securing the extension cable to the support

  1. Create a secure loop in the extension cable approximately 300 mm from the plug end.
  2. Insert the loop into the rectangular cavity at the rear of the chainsaw.
  3. Push the loop through the housing approximately 25 mm.
  4. Push each side of the loop downwards so that both sides rest firmly on the cable retention hook.
  5. To secure the cable firmly, gently pull one side of the extension cable (on the right-hand side of the chainsaw).
  6. Only after securing the cable, plug the chainsaw into the extension cable socket.

GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN INSTALLATION

WARNING! Ensure the chainsaw is switched off and disconnected from the power supply before carrying out any assembly.

  8. To remove the side cover, fully loosen the guide bar locking knob to remove the side cover and expose the sprocket.

  9. Place the chain over the nose of the guide bar, ensuring the cutting teeth face the direction of rotation. Mount the guide bar onto the motor unit and fit the chain around the guide bar. Fig. 4
  10. Chain adjustment. Ensure the guide bar groove passes over the guide studs and that the chain sits around the sprocket wheel. If it does not fit properly, adjust slightly using the tension knob.
  11. To tension the chain, pull the guide bar forward until the chain is properly seated. Ensure all drive links are seated in the guide bar groove. Adjust tension by turning the knob clockwise to increase tension and anticlockwise to decrease tension.
  12. Tension is correct when the chain can be pulled approximately 3 mm from the guide bar using finger and thumb. Do not over-tighten to avoid reducing chain and guide bar service life. Adjust approximately every 30 minutes of use.

WARNING: Do not over-tension the chain, as this will cause excessive wear and reduce the service life of both guide bar and chain. Excessive tension will also reduce the number of cuts you can achieve.

POWER AND SAFETY SWITCHES

To start the motor after plugging in the chainsaw:

  1. Press and hold the safety button (1).
  2. While holding the safety button, press the trigger switch (2). The chain will begin to operate and will be ready for cutting.
  3. Release the safety button.

OIL FILLING

The chainsaw is supplied without oil and must never be operated without oil or with low oil levels. Operating without proper lubrication can cause serious damage.

To add oil:

  1. Remove the oil tank cap. Fig. 6.
  2. Fill with chain-specific lubricating oil.
  3. Check the oil level regularly using the indicator. Fig. 7
  4. Ensure the cap is securely closed to prevent leakage.
  5. Clean any excess oil from the tool and surrounding area.

WARNING: Use only oil labelled as "chainsaw bar oil". 20W-40 motor oil is also acceptable. Do not use vegetable oil, palm oil, waste oil, etc.

To check the lubrication system: Start the chainsaw and hold the guide bar and chain over paper. An expanding oil stain indicates the lubrication system is working correctly. Fig. 8

4. OPERATION

A chainsaw is a portable, mechanical saw which cuts with a set of teeth attached to a rotating chain that runs along a guide bar. It is used in activities such as tree felling, limbing, bucking, pruning, cutting firebreaks in wildfire suppression, and firewood harvesting.

⚠ WARNING: Ensure the product is completely assembled before use. Do not operate a partially assembled chainsaw or one with damaged parts. Follow the assembly instructions step by step and use the images as a visual guide.

WARNING: Always hold the chainsaw with both hands: left hand on the front handle and right hand on the rear handle. Maintain grip on both handles during operation.

Starting

  1. Remove the guide bar guard.
  2. Release the chain brake by pulling the front hand guard back until you hear a click. Fig. 9
  3. Verify the chain brake is released by attempting to move the chain manually (with the tool switched off and unplugged). The chain should rotate freely.
    NOTE: Ensure the chain brake functions correctly. Test its operation each time you use the chainsaw before beginning any work.

WARNING: Never press the power switch before releasing the chain brake.

  1. Connect the cable to the power supply.
  2. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands, using the designated handles.
  3. To start the chainsaw, press the safety lock button on the trigger switch and then squeeze the trigger.
  4. To stop the chainsaw, simply release the trigger switch.

CUTTING APPLICATIONS

Note: It is not necessary to apply excessive downward pressure when cutting with the chainsaw. If the chain is properly sharpened, cutting will be accomplished with minimal

effort. Applying too much force can cause reduced motor speed, overheating and, consequently, hinder the cutting process.

TREE FELLING

Determine the direction in which you want the tree to fall, considering wind direction, branch positioning, tree lean, and ease of limbing and bucking (discussed below), amongst other relevant factors.

  4. Ensure no persons or animals are within 2.5 times the tree's height from its base.

  5. Clear two escape routes, each at a 45° angle in the opposite direction to the planned tree fall. These routes must be free from obstructions.

LIMBING

This is the process of removing branches from a felled tree.

- Assess the direction a branch will bend before cutting it. Always cut from the opposite side to the bend to prevent the guide bar from binding.

  2. For large branches that cannot be cut in one operation, make an initial cut from the compression side and finish from the opposite side.

  3. Do not remove branches supporting the tree off the ground until it has been cut into sections.

WARNING: Always maintain a balanced stance. Do not stand on the trunk. Bear in mind that the trunk may roll. When working on a slope, remain on the uphill side of the trunk. Avoid cutting into the ground to prevent rapid dulling of the chain.

CROSS-CUTTING

Cross-cutting involves sectioning a trunk to facilitate handling.

  • To cut a log on the ground, cut halfway through, then turn the log and cut from the opposite side, starting from above (overbuck). Fig. 13
  • To cut the end of an elevated log, first make a cut from below (underbuck) to one-third through the log and finish cutting from above. Fig. 14
  • To cut a log supported by two supports, cut from above to one-third through first, then finish from below. Fig. 15

PRUNING

Pruning involves removing a branch from a standing tree.

  • Do not use unstable supports or ladders.
  • Do not overreach or cut above shoulder height.
  • Always use both hands to hold the saw. Begin cutting from below and finish from above. Fig. 15

TIMBER UNDER TENSION

Logs may have considerable tension when on the ground and could spring dangerously when cut. Always cut the compression side first, then the tension side.

This product has no user-serviceable parts. Contact Cecotec's Official Technical Support Service or a qualified professional for inspection and repair.

5. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

NOTE: Before and after each use, inspect the product and accessories for wear and damage.

Maintenance

Chain tension: Check and adjust chain tension frequently.

Guide bar: If not cleaned regularly, oil and sawdust may combine and emit a burning odour.

  • Ensure the oil port is clear. Lubricate the guide bar nose sprocket. Fig. 17
  • Check for oil leaks and loose fastenings, particularly on handles and guide bar.
  • Clean dust from ventilation grilles to prevent overheating. Keeping the unit clean will extend chain and saw service life.
  • Periodically dress the sides of the rails with a flat file to prevent long-term damage.
  • If the chain's top rail is uneven, use a flat file to level them.

- Sharpen each cutting tooth using a chain file regularly to maintain optimal saw performance. This is particularly necessary when additional force is required to make a cut, the cut does not follow a straight line, or there is increased vibration.

- Always use outward strokes and maintain a 30° angle between the chain and file. After sharpening, cutting teeth should be of equal width and length. Fig. 19

Note: The sharpening file is not supplied with the tool. Only use sharpening accessories that are suitable for the specified chain dimensions.

Cleaning

  • Keep the chainsaw clean. Never use water or chemical cleaners to clean it. Clean with a dry cloth.
  • Keep handles free from oil to ensure a firm grip.
  • Inspect and clean the guide bar and chain of wood chips and dust after each use, clean the groove in the bar and add oil to the holes in the guide bar nose sprocket.
  • Always keep the chainsaw's ventilation grilles clean and, where possible, prevent foreign objects from entering the vents.
  • If the chainsaw is not to be used for an extended period, drain the chain oil from the tank. Briefly immerse the chain and rail in an oil bath, then wrap in oiled paper.
  • Store the chainsaw in a safe, dry place, out of children's reach, with the chain guard fitted, on a flat surface.

6. TROUBLESHOOTING

Suspected malfunctions are often due to causes that users can resolve themselves, therefore it is recommended to check the product following the instructions in this section.
