Note: Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions, since improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to normal condition.
Guidelines for safe battery usage
This notebook uses a Lithium-ion battery. Do not use it in a humid, wet or corrosive environment. Do not put, store or leave your product in or near a heat source, in a high temperature location, in strong direct sunlight, in a microwave oven or in a pressurized container, and do not expose it to temperatures over 60°C (140°F). Failure to follow these guidelines may cause the battery to leak acid, become hot, explode or ignite and cause injury and/or damage. Do not pierce, open or disassemble the battery. If the battery leaks and you come into contact with the leaked fluids, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical attention immediately. For safety reasons, and to prolong the lifetime of the battery, charging will not occur at temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 40°C (104°F).
The full performance of a new battery is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. When the operation time becomes noticeably shorter than normal, buy a new battery. Use only the approved batteries, and recharge your battery only with the approved chargers designated for this device.
Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use any charger or battery that is damaged. Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short-circuiting can occur when a metallic object such as a coin, clip or pen causes direct connection of the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of the battery. (These look like metal strips on the battery.) This might happen, for example, when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Short-circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the connecting object.
The capacity and lifetime of the battery will be reduced if the battery is left in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter. Always try to keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). A device with a hot or cold battery may not work temporarily, even when the battery is fully charged. Battery performance is especially limited in temperatures well below freezing.
Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle when possible. Do not dispose as household waste.
Wireless devices may be susceptible to interference from the battery, which could affect performance.
Replacing the battery pack
The notebook uses lithium batteries. Replace the battery with the same type as that which came bundled with your product. Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.

Warning! Batteries may explode if not handled properly. Do not disassemble or dispose of them in fire. Keep them away from children. Follow local regulations when disposing of used batteries.

- To avoid the remote risk of electric shock from lightning, do not connect the telephone line to this equipment during lightning or thunderstorms.

Warning! For safety reasons, do not use non-compliant parts when adding or changing components. Consult your reseller for purchase options.
Operating environment

Warning! For safety reasons, turn off all wireless or radio transmitting devices when using your laptop under the following conditions. These devices may include, but are not limited to: wireless LAN (WLAN), Bluetooth and/or 3G.
Remember to follow any special regulations in force in any area, and always switch off your device when its use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger. Use the device only in its normal operating positions. This device meets RF exposure guidelines when used normally, and it and its antenna are positioned at least 1.5 centimeters (5/8 inches) away from your body (refer to the figure below). It should not contain metal and you should position the device the above-stated distance from your body. To successfully transmit data files or messages, this device requires a good quality connection to the network. In some cases, transmission of data files or messages may be delayed until such a connection is available. Ensure that the above separation distance instructions are followed until the transmission is completed. Parts of the device are magnetic. Metallic materials may be attracted to the device, and persons with hearing aids should not hold the device to the ear with the hearing aid. Do not place credit cards or other magnetic storage media near the device, because information stored on them may be erased.
Medical devices
Operation of any radio transmitting equipment, including wireless phones, may interfere with the functionality of inadequately protected medical devices. Consult a physician or the manufacturer of the medical device to determine if they are adequately shielded from external RF energy or if you have any questions. Switch off your device in health care facilities when any regulations posted in these areas instruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF transmissions.
Pacemakers. Pacemaker manufacturers recommend that a minimum separation of 15.3 centimeters (6 inches) be maintained between wireless devices and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with the independent research by and recommendations of Wireless Technology Research. Persons with pacemakers should do the following:
Always keep the device more than 15.3 centimeters (6 inches) from the pacemaker - Not carry the device near your pacemaker when the device is switched on. If you suspect interference, switch off your device, and move it.
Hearing aids. Some digital wireless devices may interfere with some hearing aids. If interference occurs, consult your service provider.
Vehicles
RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles such as electronic fuel injection systems, electronic antiskid (antilock) braking systems, electronic speed control systems, and air bag systems. For more information, check with the manufacturer, or its
representative, of your vehicle or any equipment that has been added. Only qualified personnel should service the device, or install the device in a vehicle.
Faulty installation or service may be dangerous and may invalidate any warranty that may apply to the device. Check regularly that all wireless
equipment in your vehicle is mounted and operating properly. Do not store or carry flammable liquids, gases, or explosive materials in the same compartment as the device, its parts, or enhancements. For vehicles equipped with an air bag, remember that air bags inflate with great force. Do not place objects, including installed or portable wireless equipment in the area over the air bag or in the air bag deployment area. If in-vehicle wireless equipment is improperly
installed, and the air bag inflates, serious injury could result. Using your device while flying in aircraft is prohibited. Switch off your device before boarding an aircraft. The use of wireless teledevices in an aircraft may be dangerous to the operation of the aircraft, disrupt the wireless telephone network, and may be illegal.
Potentially explosive environments
Switch off your device when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere and obey all signs and instructions. Potentially explosive atmospheres include areas where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death. Switch off the device at refueling points such as near gas pumps at service stations. Observe restrictions on the use of radio equipment in fuel depots, storage, and distribution areas; chemical plants; or where blasting operations are in progress. Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly marked. They include below deck on boats, chemical transfer or storage facilities, vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (such as propane or butane), and areas where the air contains chemicals or particles such as grain, dust or metal powders. Do not switch the notebook on when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger.
Emergency calls
Warning: You cannot make emergency calls through this device. To make an emergency call you shall dial out through your mobile phone or other telephone call system.

Touchpad
The built-in touchpad is a pointing device that senses movement on its surface. This means the cursor responds as you move your finger across the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palmrest provides optimum comfort and support.
Touchpad basics (with fingerprint reader)
The following items show you how to use the touchpad with Acer Bio-Protection fingerprint reader.
- Move your finger across the touchpad (1) to move the cursor.
- Press the left (2) and right (4) buttons located beneath the touchpad to perform selection and execution functions. These two buttons are similar to the left and right buttons on a mouse. Tapping on the touchpad is the same as clicking the left button.

| Function | Left button (2) | Right button (4) | Main touchpad (1) | Center button (3) |
| Execute | Quickly click twice. | Tap twice (at the same speed as double-clicking a mouse button). | ||
| Select | Click once. | Tap once. | ||
| Drag | Click and hold, then use finger on the touchpad to drag the cursor. | Tap twice (at the same speed as double-clicking a mouse button); rest your finger on the touchpad on the second tap and drag the cursor. | ||
| Access context menu | Click once. |
Touchpad basics (with two-click buttons)
The following items show you how to use the touchpad with two-click buttons.
- Move your finger across the touchpad to move the cursor.
- Press the left and right buttons located beneath the touchpad to perform selection and execution functions. These two buttons are similar to the left and right buttons on a mouse. Tapping on the touchpad is the same as clicking the left button.
| Function | Left button | Right button | Main touchpad |

| Access context menu | Click once. |

Note: Illustrations for reference only. The exact configuration of your PC depends on the model purchased.

Note: When using the touchpad, keep it — and your fingers — dry and clean. The touchpad is sensitive to finger movement; hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will not increase the touchpad's responsiveness.

Note: By default, vertical and horizontal scrolling is enabled on your touchpad. It can be disabled under Mouse settings in Windows Control Panel.
Using the keyboard
The keyboard has full-sized keys and an embedded numeric keypad*, separate cursor, lock, Windows, function and special keys.
Lock keys and embedded numeric keypad*
The keyboard has three lock keys which you can toggle on and off.
| Lock key | Description |
| Caps Lock | When Caps Lock is on, all alphabetic characters typed are in uppercase. |
| Num Lock <Fn> + <F11>* | When Num Lock is on, the embedded keypad is in numeric mode. The keys function as a calculator (complete with the arithmetic operators +, -, *, and /). Use this mode when you need to do a lot of numeric data entry. A better solution would be to connect an external keypad. |
| Scroll Lock <Fn> + <F12> | When Scroll Lock is on, the screen moves one line up or down when you press the up or down arrow keys respectively. Scroll Lock does not work with some applications. |
The embedded numeric keypad functions like a desktop numeric keypad. It is indicated by small characters located on the upper right corner of the keycaps. To simplify the keyboard legend, cursor-control key symbols are not printed on the keys.
| Desired access | Num Lock on | Num Lock off |
| Number keys on embedded keypad | Type numbers in a normal manner. | |
| Cursor-control keys on embedded keypad | Hold <Shift> while using cursor-control keys. | Hold <Fn> while using cursor-control keys. |
| Main keyboard keys | Hold <Fn> while typing letters on embedded keypad. | Type the letters in a normal manner. |

Battery pack
The computer uses a battery pack that gives you long use between charges.
Battery pack characteristics
The battery pack has the following characteristics:
- Employs current battery technology standards. Delivers a battery-low warning.
The battery is recharged whenever you connect the computer to the AC adapter. Your computer supports charge-in-use, enabling you to recharge the battery while you continue to operate the computer. However, recharging with the computer turned off results in a significantly faster charge time.
The battery will come in handy when you travel or during a power failure. It is advisable to have an extra fully charged battery pack available as backup. Contact your dealer for details on ordering a spare battery pack.
Maximizing the battery's life
Like all other batteries, your computer's battery will degrade over time. This means that the battery's performance will diminish with time and use. To maximize your battery's life, you are advised to adhere to the recommendations set out below.
Conditioning a new battery pack
Before you use a battery pack for the first time, there is a "conditioning" process that you should follow:
1. Insert the new battery without turning the computer on. 2. Connect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery. 3. Disconnect the AC adapter. 4. Turn on the computer and operate using battery power. 5. Fully deplete the battery until the battery-low warning appears. 6. Reconnect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery again.
Follow these steps again until the battery has been charged and discharged three times.
Use this conditioning process for all new batteries, or if a battery hasn't been used for a long time. If the computer is to be stored for more than two weeks, you are advised to remove the battery pack from the unit.

Warning: Do not expose battery packs to temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 45°C (113°F). Extreme temperatures may adversely affect the battery pack.
By following the battery conditioning process you condition your battery to accept the maximum possible charge. Failure to follow this procedure will prevent you from obtaining the maximum battery charge, and will also shorten the effective lifespan of the battery.
In addition, the useful lifespan of the battery is adversely affected by the following usage patterns:
- Using the computer on constant AC power with the battery inserted. If you want to use constant AC power, you are advised to remove the battery pack after it is fully charged.
- Not discharging and recharging the battery to its extremes, as described above.
- Frequent use; the more you use the battery, the faster it will reach the end of its effective life. A standard computer battery has a life span of about 300 charges.
Installing and removing the battery pack

Important! Before removing the battery from the unit, connect the AC adapter if you want to continue using your computer. Otherwise, turn off the computer first.
To install a battery pack:
1. Align the battery with the open battery bay; make sure that the end with the contacts will enter first, and that the top surface of the battery is facing up. 2. Slide the battery into the battery bay and gently push until the battery locks in place.
To remove a battery pack:
1. Slide the battery release latch to release the battery. 2. Pull the battery from the battery bay.
Charging the battery
To charge the battery, first make sure that it is correctly installed in the battery bay. Plug the AC adapter into the computer, and connect to a mains power outlet. You can continue to operate your computer on AC power while your battery is charging. However, charging the battery with the computer turned off results in a significantly faster charge time.

Note: You are advised to charge the battery before retiring for the day. Charging the battery overnight before traveling enables you to start the next day with a fully charged battery.
Checking the battery level
The Windows power meter indicates the current battery level. Rest the cursor over the battery/power icon on the taskbar to see the battery's present charge level.
Optimising battery life
Optimizing battery life helps you get the most out of battery operation, prolonging the charge/recharge cycle and improving recharging efficiency. You are advised to follow the suggestions set out below:
Purchase an extra battery pack. - Use AC power whenever possible, reserving battery for on-the-go use. - Eject a PC Card if it is not being used, as it will continue to draw power (for selected model). - Store the battery pack in a cool, dry place. The recommended temperature is 10°C (50°F) to 30°C (86°F). Higher temperatures cause the battery to self-discharge faster. - Excessive recharging decreases the battery life. - Look after your AC adapter and battery.
Battery-low warning
When using battery power pay attention to the Windows power meter.

Warning: Connect the AC adapter as soon as possible after the battery-low warning appears. Data will be lost if the battery becomes fully depleted and the computer shuts down.
When the battery-low warning appears, the recommended course of action depends on your situation:
| Situation | Recommended Action |
| The AC adapter and a power outlet are available. | 1. Plug the AC adapter into the computer, and then connect to the mains power supply. 2. Save all necessary files. 3. Resume work. Turn off the computer if you want to recharge the battery rapidly. |

Tips and advice for comfortable work
Users who spend long periods of time at a computer may experience excessive eye strain and headaches. Users also risk physical injury if they sit at a computer for many hours. Prolonged work, poor posture, improper workstation organization, stress, unsuitable working conditions, personal health status, and other factors significantly increase the risk of physical injury.
Improper posture at the computer can lead to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, bursitis, or other musculoskeletal disorders. In the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, neck, or back, the following symptoms may appear:
Numbness, burning or tingling, aching, soreness, swelling, or stiffness. Weakness, pain, or numbness in the hands or wrists.
If you experience these symptoms, whether they are recurring or persistent, or if you feel discomfort or pain while working at the computer, consult a physician immediately and report this to the company's Safety and Health department.
The following section provides advice on how to make computer work more comfortable.
Finding a comfortable working position
Find the most comfortable position at the computer by adjusting the monitor angle, using a footrest, or adjusting the chair height. Follow these tips:
Do not sit in one position for long periods. Do not lean too far forward over the desk or recline too far back in the chair.
- Take periodic breaks to stretch your legs and relieve tension in your muscles.
- Take short breaks to relieve tension in your neck and shoulders. Do not tense your muscles or raise your shoulders. Position the monitor and keyboard on your work surface so that they are easy to reach. If you look at the monitor more often than at documents, place the monitor in the center of the desk to minimize head movement.
Caring for your eyes
If you look at the monitor for long periods, wear improperly fitted glasses or contact lenses, use a desk with a glossy surface, fail to adjust the screen brightness, or use low-contrast or low-resolution displays, your eyes will become tired. The following sections provide advice on how to reduce excessive eye strain.
Eyes
- Give your eyes frequent rest.
- Periodically look away from the monitor and focus on a distant object.
- Adjust the monitor so that your eyes do not become tired.
Display
- Position the display in the room. Your head should be above the top edge of the display, so that when viewing images and text on the display, your eyes look slightly downward.
- Adjust the brightness and/or contrast of the display so that the text is easy to read and the graphics are displayed clearly.
- Change the viewing angle and reflection:
- Position the display so that its side edge faces the window or light source.
- Reduce the light in the room, using curtains, blinds, or dimmers, and turn on lighting at the workstation.
- Adjust the viewing angle of the display.
- Use an anti-glare filter.
- Attach a sun visor to the top edge of the display, for example, a cardboard strip.
Do not look at the display from an uncomfortable position. Do not look directly at a bright light source, such as open windows.
Developing proper work habits
Develop the following work habits at the computer, which will allow you to get less tired and work more productively:
Take frequent breaks during work.
xiv
- Do some stretching exercises.
- Try to get out into the fresh air as often as possible.
- Regularly do eye exercises to strengthen them.

Warning: Do not use the computer in a lying or prone position. If this cannot be avoided, work only for short periods, take frequent breaks, and do stretching exercises.

The Acer Backup Manager program allows you to create backup copies of the entire system or of individual files and folders, either on a schedule or as needed, in three simple steps.
To start Acer Backup Manager, press the Acer Backup Manager key at the top of the keyboard. Alternatively, select Start > All Programs > Acer Backup Manager > Acer Backup Manager. The welcome screen opens. From this screen, in three steps, you can configure backup copying according to a schedule. To go to the next screen, click Next. Follow the instructions on the screen:
1 Select the content for the backup copy. The less content you select, the faster the copying process, but the higher the risk of data loss. 2 Select the storage method for backup copies. You need to select an external disk or drive: - Acer Backup Manager cannot store backup copies on the source disk. 3 Select the frequency with which Acer Backup Manager will perform backup copying.
After completing these three steps, backup copies will be created automatically according to the schedule. You can also create a backup copy manually by pressing the Acer Backup Manager key.
To change the settings, at any time start Acer Backup Manager from the Start menu and repeat the steps described above.

Power management
The computer has a built-in power management device that monitors system activity. System activity refers to user actions involving one or more devices, such as: keyboard, mouse, disk drive, floppy disk, peripheral devices connected to serial and parallel ports, as well as video adapters. Battery
The computer uses a battery that provides long battery life.
Battery specifications
The battery used has the following characteristics:
Complies with current industry standards. - Battery charge level indicator.
The battery is charged when the AC adapter is connected to the portable computer. The battery can also be charged while the computer is in use, allowing you to continue working while the battery charges. However, charging the battery in a powered-off computer takes significantly less time.
The battery allows you to use the computer on the go or when there is no electrical outlet. It is recommended to keep a fully charged spare battery in reserve. Information about purchasing a spare battery can be obtained from the portable computer dealer.
Extending the battery life
Like all other batteries, the battery of a portable computer loses capacity over time. This means that the battery operating time decreases over time. To extend the battery life, it is recommended to follow the recommendations below.
Preparing a new battery for use
Before using a new battery for the first time, it is recommended to perform a "conditioning" process:
1 Insert the new battery into the turned-off computer and do not turn it on.
2 Connect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery. 3 Disconnect the AC adapter. 4 Use the computer with battery power until the battery is fully discharged. 5 Use the computer until the battery is fully discharged and the low battery warning appears. 6 Connect the AC adapter and charge the battery again.
Repeat the steps described above to perform three full charge and discharge cycles for the battery.
Perform this preparation procedure for all new batteries and for batteries that have not been used for a long time. If the computer is not going to be used for two weeks or more, it is recommended to remove the battery.

Warning: Do not expose the battery to temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 45°C (113°F). Exposure to high or low temperatures may adversely affect the performance of the battery.
The battery preparation procedure increases the capacity (maximum charge level) of the battery. If the preparation procedure is not performed, the battery may not charge to the maximum level, and its service life may be shortened.
Installing the battery.
1 Align the battery with the battery bay edges, making sure that the battery contacts face inward and the top surface of the battery faces up. 2 Insert the battery into the battery bay and gently press it until it clicks into place.
Removing the battery:
1 Slide the battery release latch. 2 Pull the battery out of the bay.
Charging the battery

Before charging, make sure the battery is installed in the battery bay. Connect the AC adapter to the computer and to an electrical outlet. You can continue working on the computer while the battery is charging. However, charging the battery with the computer turned off takes significantly less time.
Note: It is recommended to charge the battery at the beginning of each day. Charging the battery before a trip allows you to start work in the morning with a fully charged battery.

Safety instructions for battery use
Use only the supplied lithium-ion battery. Do not use it in humid, wet, or corrosive environments. Do not place, store, or leave the product near heat sources, high temperatures, direct sunlight, microwave ovens, or containers under pressure. Do not expose it to temperatures above 60°C (140°F). If you do not follow these instructions, the battery may leak acid, the battery itself may heat up, ignite, or explode, which could cause injury or damage. Do not puncture, disassemble, or deform the battery. If the battery leaks and you come into contact with the leaked liquid, rinse with water and seek medical attention immediately. For safety reasons and to extend battery life, do not charge at temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 40°C (104°F).
The full effectiveness of the new battery is achieved only after the first few charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged at any time, but it will eventually wear out. When the operating time becomes noticeably shorter than normal, purchase a new battery. Use only approved batteries and recharge the battery only with approved chargers designed for this device.
Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use a damaged battery or charger. Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short-circuiting can occur when a metallic object such as a coin, clip, or pen causes a direct connection between the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of the battery. (The terminals appear as metal strips on the battery.) This can happen, for example, when you carry a spare battery in a pocket or bag. Short-circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the connected object.
Battery life will decrease if the battery is left in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter. Aim to keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). A device with a hot or cold battery may temporarily not work, even if the battery is fully charged. Battery performance is especially limited at temperatures well below freezing.
Do not dispose of batteries in fire, as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of used batteries in accordance with local regulations. Please recycle them when possible. Do not dispose of them with household waste.
The device may emit a strange odor from the battery, which will affect its operation.
Battery replacement
The device uses a rechargeable battery. Replace the battery with the same type as the one supplied with the product. If you use a different battery, there is a risk of fire or explosion.

Attention! Batteries may explode if not handled properly. Do not disassemble or throw them into fire. Keep them away from children. Follow local laws and regulations when disposing of used batteries.
