PRODUCT OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

The Geratherm ^® ovu control consists of four parts:

• the main body
  • the battery compartment
• the lens and
  • the protective cap.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

During the menstrual cycle of women, estrogen levels dramatically increase prior to ovulation. The increase in estrogen levels invokes the saliva composition to change, which causes the dried saliva to form fern-like crystallization patterns. This is an indication that ovulation is imminent and the women is most fertile.

To examine the crystallization pattern, a small drop of saliva is placed on the lens of the Geratherm® ovu control. Once the saliva has air-dried, the eye piece is brought to close proximity to the eye for viewing. The blue button at the lower part of the device is pressed to activate the light and the pattern can be examined at 50-fold magnification.

During the less fertile days, the so-called gravel structure appears, which has motifs similar to dots or water bubbles.

Clinical benefit

The Geratherm ^® ovu control is a mini microscope that can be used to determine the fertile days in the female cycle. As a result, this device can help to fulfill the desire to have children.

INTENDED PURPOSE

The Geratherm ^® ovu control is a device for self-testing to help identify the fertile days of women during the menstrual cycle. It provides information by means of self-identification of a ferning-pattern in the saliva of women. This is an indication that ovulation is imminent. By knowing when they are fertile, women can plan intercourse to improve their chances of conceiving.

INTENDED PURPOSE

Indications

The Geratherm ^® ovu control is indicated for women trying to conceive for:

• increasing the chances of conception by predicting ovulation / identifying the fertile period
• planning of sexual intercourse in relation to ovulation
• reducing the effects of an irregular occurrence of the day of ovulation due to natural variations in cycle lengths in natural family planning

Contraindications

The Geratherm ^® ovu control is explicitly not indicated for:

• The use as contraceptive
- The use as a general magnification lens / device
- The use as a diagnostic device to precisely analyze estrogen or any other hormone levels
• Females with known sterility
• Females with amenorrhea
- The use by minors
• Females during pregnancy or lactation
- For women with a known hormonal disorder
- Individuals with highly impaired or uncorrected
- Male individuals

Patient target group

The Geratherm ^® ovu control is intended to be used by females with age over 18 until menopause, independently of weight or nationality. The user must be conscious and under no physical restrictions.

Intended user

The Geratherm ^® ovu control must only be used by adults.

INTENDED PURPOSE

General information

The idealized menstrual cycle of a woman is stated to be 28 days in general. However, new evidence shows that the true cycle length can be anywhere from 24 to 40 days. In addition, the cycle length can differ greatly from the previous cycle. Because of this phenomenon, it is difficult for a woman to determine her fertile days based on just the day of her cycle or the occurrence of the menstrual period.

The fertile phase is the time around ovulation, when fertilization of the egg becomes possible. Ovulation is triggered by rising levels of female sex hormones such as estrogen and the luteinizing hormone.

A woman's fertile days start about five days before ovulation and end 24 hours after ovulation. The explanation for this short time frame is that sperm can only survive in the woman's body for up to five days and the egg cell dies as early as 24 hours after ovulation. The chance of conception drops to virtually zero 24 hours after ovulation.

The principle and the reliability of the results of the Geratherm® ovu control have been confirmed by the manufacturer in clinical studies. Depending on the estrogen level, the sensitivity is 80 % and the specificity is 79 %. Depending on the time to ovulation, the sensitivity of the Geratherm® ovu control is > 98 % (from three days before ovulation). Parts of these studies have been published in Günther et al. 2015 (European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology) and Salmassi et al. 2013 (Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation).

EXPLANATION OF TERMS

Device for Self-testing

Device for self-testing' means any device intended by the manufacturer to be used by lay persons.

Ovulation

Ovulation is the term used to describe the release of the unfertilized egg cell from the ovary. Ovulation takes place around the middle of the woman's menstrual cycle and is the prerequisite for the fertilization of the egg by a sperm in the fallopian tube.

Estrogen

Estrogens are the most important female sex hormones. Estrogens promote the maturation of a fertile egg cell. Estrogen promotes the blood flow through the endometrium. The cervix opens and cervical mucus becomes permeable for sperm.

Ferning-pattern

The ferning phenomenon is a very characteristic formation of fern-like salt crystals in the dried saliva that occurs under the influence of estrogen. This phenomenon occurs just before ovulation.

PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

Failure to observe the intended purpose as well as a lack of knowledge about the use of Geratherm® ovu control can lead to stress, injury or incorrect determination of the fertile days.

- Before using the fertility test for the first time, read these instructions for use completely and observe all recommendations for action as well as the warnings and precautions contained in the instructions for use.

PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

• Use the fertility test only in accordance with these instructions for use.
• Observe all information on the fertility test and its packaging.
• Keep the instructions for use for further users and future use.

⚠ Absence of a ferning-pattern is no reliable indication for an infertile period.

- Do not use the device for contraceptive purposes.

Drying of saliva can be impaired by very high humidity.

- Drying is supported at increasing temperatures and decreasing humidity.

Changes to Geratherm® ovu control can lead to a loss of functionality.

• Do not modify the device or take it apart.
• Only use the device when it is fully assembled.

Certain medication or hormone preparations that either intervene with the menstrual cycle or change the secretion of saliva, as well as acute inflammations in the oral cavity or in the throat as well as salivary gland diseases can temporarily change the composition of the saliva and thus influence the result.

• Do not rely solely on the results of this fertility test in these cases.
• If necessary, wait until the underlying issue has been resolved before using the device.
• If necessary, seek medical advice.

External influences can falsify the development of the ferning pattern.

- Do not drink, eat, smoke, rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for at least three hours before collecting saliva.

PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

Ferning will not occur in a small proportion of women, even though all steps have been performed correctly. One reason for this may be the level of estrogen, which does not rise sufficiently over the course of the menstrual cycle in a few women.
⚠️ If the absence of conception persists, fertility may be impaired.

- If necessary, seek medical advice and have both your fertility and that of your partner checked.

Outdoor use may spoil the specimen and direct sunlight may blind the display of the specimen.

• Use only indoors.
• Avoid bright surrounding light to view results.

⚠️ Germs, e.g., bacteria and viruses, can be transmitted from user to user.

- For reasons of hygiene and health, use Geratherm ^® ovu control only as personal device.

A correct result can only be achieved with a clean lens.

- Before applying the saliva, check that the flat inner side of the lens is clean and, if necessary, clean it with the cleaning cloth included in the package.

⚠️ Failure to follow to the recommended time for the saliva to dry can lead to incorrect results.

- Adhere to the recommended minimum time for the saliva to dry.

PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

Incorrect handling can damage the Geratherm® ovu control.

• Do not flush the device with water or other liquids
• Do not clean the device other than stated in this manual.
• Do not submerge the device in liquids
• Keep the device away from moisture, dust and dirt.
• Do not expose the device to temperatures lower than 0^ or higher than 70^ .

A defective Geratherm® ovu control causes incorrect results.

• Always keep the device in the protective cover provided.
- Before each use, check the device for functionality, visible damage, and signs of excessive wear and tear.
- If you are unsure or if your result deviates significantly from the expected result, repeat the test.
- If problems with conception persist, seek medical advice.
- Do not drop the device and do not expose to sudden impact.
- A damaged device must no longer be used.
- Do not use modified or disassembled device

This device contains small parts which can be swallowed and pose a choking hazard for children.

- Keep the device out of the reach of children.

⚠️ Improper disposal can lead to environmental damage.

• Dispose of used batteries according to local regulations.
• Dispose of the device in accordance with local regulations for electronic waste.

USE

Note:

- Use the Geratherm® ovu control at the earliest three hours after eating, drinking, brushing your teeth or smoking.

Initial implementation

Unpack the device. Avoid using sharp objects when unpacking. Check for completeness. Check the device for external damage.

Before using the device for the first time, read the instructions for use carefully and completely.

Before using the device, the first time, clean the components as described in Section „PROCESSING/CLEANING“. Store the components in a dry, clean and dust-free place until they are used for the first time.

Step 1:

Remove the long blue protective cap from the Geratherm® ovu control.

Step 2:

Remove the lens carefully by pulling away from the main body.

Step 3:

Hold the lens with the flat inner side facing upwards or place the lens on a table with the arched outer side.

Dab a drop of saliva from the underside of the tongue with a clean, dry finger into the center of the flat inner side of the lens without smearing the drop.

USE

Make sure that there are no air bubbles or foam on the lens. Let the saliva sample dry well for about 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature. To do this, lay the lens aside with the flat inner side facing upwards.

Step 4:

Put the lens with the completely dried drop of saliva back onto the main body of the device.

Step 5:

Push the button to activate the light switch. If necessary, remove any visual aids.

While pressing the light switch, look through the upper section of the device with the inserted lens so as to view your test result. Look closely and carefully at the sample in order to evaluate your result correctly. Avoid bright ambient light.

Note:

In case no crystallization structure can be seen when observing the sample, pull the lens out of the housing again, allow the saliva sample to dry completely and redo the examination.

USE

Step 6:

After each use, clean the flat inner side of the lens as described in Section „PROCESSING/CLEANING“.

Place the blue protective cap back onto the main body after use.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

Conception is likely

The ferning-pattern is clearly visible. During these fertile days sexual intercourse is recommended if you wish to conceive.

Fertility

Conception is possible, but unlikely

A few crystals with a slight fern-ing-pattern are visible. This is the start of the fertile days.

You see a gravel-like pattern with dots and bubbles. You are most likely not fertile.

PROCESSING / CLEANING

Note:

• Do not clean the device or the lens under running water.
• Avoid cleaning the lens with cleaning agents (detergents, soap etc.), as these can leave residues on the lens that may affect crystallization.

Before starting processing, remove the blue protective cap from the device. Then carefully remove the lens by pulling it off the main body.

Clean the lens with a lint-free cloth. If necessary, moisten the cloth with small amounts of water. Wipe the flat inner side of the lens two or three times to remove any saliva. The main body must be cleaned in the same way. Then, wipe the surfaces dry with a lint-free cloth.

All components of the Geratherm ^® ovu control must be visually checked for damage after processing. Do not use the Geratherm ^® ovu control if it is damaged.

After cleaning, store the device in a dry, clean and dust-free location. Always put the protective cap on the device.

SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

Note:

- The batteries should be changed after 80 hours at the latest or at the user's own discretion.

First, remove the blue protective cap from the device so that you can hold the device securely.

Then open the device by pushing the lower white cover away by tilting it sideways.

Replace the two empty batteries (2 x LR44 1.5 V) with new ones. Observe the polarity of the batteries; the positive pole of both batteries must point outwards.

Push the white cover back onto the device until it clicks into place.

DISPOSAL

When disposing the device, the battery and the packaging, please observe the local regulations.

• Remove the battery before disposing of the device.
• Do not dispose of used batteries in domestic waste. Dispose of used batteries as special waste or at a battery collection point in specialist shops.
• Dispose of the device and the packaging in accordance with local regulations in order to ensure a professional and environmentally friendly disposal.
• Do not dispose of the batteries or the device in a fire.
