Overview

The AC-DN10A is a battery charger for Sony Lithium-ion battery packs. It functions as an AC adaptor when attached to a portable device, such as a camcorder.

Note

BP-M50/M100 Nickel Metal Hydride Battery Packs cannot be charged with the unit.

Features

Maximum power supply of 100 W DC

The unit supplies a maximum of 16.7 V DC, 6 A to a device with a maximum input voltage rating of 17 V. The unit can charge a battery pack while supplying DC power to the connected device. However, when there is insufficient current for battery charging due to DC power supply to the device, the battery charging is stopped (DC supply to the camcorder or other device is maintained).

Battery backup function

Should the AC power cord be accidentally unplugged from the AC power source, a charged lithium-ion battery pack attached to the unit provides an alternate back-up power to the connected device.

Charging time

The time to charge a completely exhausted battery pack to its full capacity is shown in the table below (when charged at temperature of 25 °C (57 °F) without supplying DC power to a connected device).

Battery pack Charging time to full capacity
BP-GL95B Approx.90 minutes
BP-FL75/FLX75 Approx.65 minutes

About the charging indicator

The charging indicator shows the charging status of the attached battery pack as shown in the table below.

Indicator Charging status
Flashing (orange)Charging (less than 90% capacity)
Flashing (green)Charging (between 90% and 100% capacity)
Lit (green) Fully charged
Flashing (orange → green → off)Charging standby state (internal temperature of battery is 0 °C (32 °F) and lower or 60 °C (140 °F) and higher)
Flashing rapidly (orange and green)Error detected during charging (For details, see “When an abnormality is detected while charging” below.)

When an abnormality is detected while charging

When one of the following conditions is detected while charging, the charging indicator flashes rapidly in orange and green and the charging is stopped to protect the battery pack.

• After the start of charging, the voltage of the DC output connector for battery charging has dropped below the specified level (6 V).
• After the start of charging, the voltage of the DC output connector for battery charging has exceeded the specified level (17.5 V).
- The battery voltage did not rise to the specified level within a specified period (2 hours).

The charging indicator remains flashing until the unit is disconnected from the AC power source or the battery pack is removed.

Notes

  • When a battery pack which is not chargeable with the unit is connected, charging does not take place and the charging indicator does not light up.
  • BP-M50/M100 Nickel Metal Hydride Battery Packs cannot be charged with the unit.
  • Nickel-cadmium battery packs cannot be charged using the DC-L1 (adaptor for NP-1B) and DCL90 (adaptor for BP-90A).

Usage Precautions

Notes about the battery charger

  • Use the unit in an operating environment of 0 °C to 35 °C (32 °F to 95 °F). Since charging is difficult at low temperatures, we recommend that battery packs be charged between 10 °C and 30 °C (50 °F and 86 °F).
  • The unit has a charging control function controlled by the temperature. If the internal temperature of the battery is 0 °C (32 °F) and lower or 60 °C (140 °F) and higher, the unit is in standby state and charging does not take place. When the temperature is above 0 °C (32 °F) or below 60 °C (140 °F), charging takes place.
  • Avoid using or storing the unit in dusty places or places with corrosive gases.
  • Avoid using or storing the unit in places exposed to direct sunlight.

Notes about battery packs

  • Even when fully charged, battery packs gradually lose their charge naturally. Use the battery packs as soon as possible after charging.
  • Carry and store battery packs by installing them in your equipment or by repacking them using the original packing material.
  • To prolong the life of battery packs, store them in a cool place (about 20 °C (68 °F)), and charge in a place with an ambient temperature

between 10 °C and 30 °C (50 °F and 86 °F).

  • When temperatures are 10 °C (50 °F) or lower, the performance of a battery pack suffers and the usable time of a battery pack becomes shorter. To get the longest usable time, warm the battery packs to room temperature (about 20 °C (68 °F)) before use.
  • Carrying a spare battery pack is recommended.

Lithium-ion battery packs are free from memory effect. There is no need to discharge them fully before recharging.

If the usable time of a battery pack becomes very short, it is time to replace it with a new one.

Note about the battery terminal

The battery terminal of this unit (the connector for battery packs and AC adaptors) is a consumable part. Power may not be supplied to the unit properly if the pins of the battery terminal are bent or deformed by shock or vibrations, or if they become corroded due to prolonged outdoor use.

Periodic inspections are recommended to keep the unit working properly and to prolong its usable lifetime.

Contact a Sony service or sales representative for more information about inspections.

Condensation

If the unit is suddenly taken from a cold to a warm location, or if ambient

temperature suddenly rises, moisture may form on the outer surface of the unit and/or inside of the unit. This is known as condensation. If condensation occurs, turn off the unit and wait until the condensation clears before operating the unit. Operating the unit while condensation is present may damage the unit.
