Proper use

  • This hedge trimmer is designed for cutting young shoots and soft branches on hedges and shrubs in house and hobby gardens.
  • As hedge shears for the private house and hobby garden are considered such devices that are not applied in public facilities, parks, and sports facilities as well as in the agriculture and silviculture.
The device shall not be used for cutting grass, grass borders or in order to chop for composting. Otherwise, there is a risk of injury.
  • This machine must not be used in an explosive environment or exposed to rain.
Metallic parts (wires etc.) have unconditionally to be removed from the material to be cut.
  • The intended usage also includes compliance with the operating, servicing and repair conditions prescribed by the manufacturer and following the safety instructions included in the instructions.
The relevant accident prevention regulations for the operation as well as the other generally acknowledged occupational medicine and safety rules must be complied with.
  • Any other use is deemed not to be used as prescribed. The manufacturer is not liable for any type of damage resulting from this; the user bears the sole risk.
  • Unauthorised modifications on the device exclude a liability of the manufacturer for damages of any kind resulting from it.

  • Only persons who are familiarised with the device and informed about possible risks are allowed to prepare, operate and service this device. Repair works may only be carried out by us or by a customer service agent nominated by us.

Residual risks

Even if used properly, residual risks can exist even if the relevant safety regulations are complied with due to the design determined by the intended purpose.

Residual risks can be minimised if the "Safety advices" and the "Intended usage" as well as the whole of the operating instructions are observed.

Observing these instructions, and taking proper care, will reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment.

  • Risk of injuries of fingers and hands by the tool.
    Injury by catapulted workpiece parts.
  • Breaking or catapulting of knife pieces.
    Risk from electricity
    Electric shock.
  • Touching live parts of opened electrical components.
  • Impairment of hearing when working on the machine for longer periods of time without ear protection.
Eye injury when failing to wear safety goggles or visor.
  • Health impairment resulting from exposure to hand arm vibration if the machine is used too long or is not properly guided and maintained.
  • Warning This device generates an electromagnetic field during operation. Such a field may affect active or passive medical implants under certain circumstances. To reduce the risk of serious injuries we recommend persons who carry medical implants to consult their doctor and the manufacturer of the medical implant before operating this device.

In addition, in spite of all the precautionary measures taken, non-obvious residual risks can still exist.

Vibrations (hand arm vibrations)

Hand arm vibration a_n < 2,5m / s^2

Measuring uncertainty K = 1,5m / s^2

The indicated vibration emission level has been measured according to a standardised test method and can be used to compare power tools.

It can also be used for an initial estimate of the vibration exposure.

The actual vibration emission level during the use of the machine may differ from that indicated in the operating instructions or indicated by the manufacturer.

This may be caused by the following factors to be minded before and during the use

  • Proper use of the machine
  • Correct cutting or machining of material
  • Proper condition of the machine for use
Use of the correct and sharp cutting tool

  • Handles and optional anti-vibration handles properly mounted on the machine body

When you feel uncomfortable or notice discoloration of skin on your hands during the use of the machine, stop working immediately. Observe sufficient break times to rest. Failure to have sufficient break times may result in a hand-arm vibration syndrome.

The extent of exposure depending on the type of work or machine use should be estimated and appropriate breaks taken. In this way, the extent of exposure can be considerably reduced over the entire work time. Minimise the risk caused by vibrations. Maintain this machine according to the instructions in the manual. If you intend to use this machine frequently, contact your local authorised dealer and purchase antivibration accessories if required. Avoid the use of this machine at temperatures under 10^ . Create a work schedule in order to minimise vibration exposure.

When may I cut?

Follow the country-specific or communal legal regulations for cutting hedges (including hedge banks, shrubbery, reed bed and reeds). It may deviate from the following.

For the protection of animals and breeding birds, the cutting (radical cutting) of hedges, but also bushes, reed bed and reeds is not permitted from 1 March to 30 September.

During this time, gentle shaping and pruning are permitted, in which only the fresh growth of the plants is removed or cuts to maintain the health of trees.

A radical cutback or grubbing-up is only possible from October to March without violating the law.

When is the right time for cutting?

Observe the right time for cutting to prevent harming your hedge unnecessarily.

Depending on the type of your hedge, the time for cutting differs.

Recommendations:

Deciduous hedges are pruned shortly before winter or until the end of February.
Evergreen hedges or conifers are pruned before the first shoots in spring (end of March) or in autumn before the first frost.
Hedges of flowering shrubs should, if trimming is required, be cut immediately after flowering.
Shaping and pruning can always be carried out between March and September for all varieties.

Observe also the weather conditions:

Spring pruning should not be done at freezing temperatures, since the cuts produced heat very poorly. In addition, branches break off easily at freezing temperatures. A good day for cutting is therefore a dry and sunny day without frost.
Summer pruning should not be carried out when it is too hot and the sun is too bright; the freshly cut shoots dry out and die off. Cut early in the day therefore, in the late afternoon or on a cloudy day.
Do not cut either during heavy rain; the moisture will promote the growth of fungi and pests.

Simply ask a specialist who can tell you about the right time for cutting your hedge and provide you with useful tips.

Working with the hedge trimmer

Before cutting, make sure that there are no breeding birds or wild animals in the hedge. With breeding animals you should shift the cutting, in order not to drive away the old animals.

ATIKA HSC 40-600 - Working with the hedge trimmer - 1

Hold the hedge shear with both hands on a safe distance from the body.

The maximal diameter to cut depends on the wood's type, age, moisture and hardness. Therefore cut very thick branches using branch shears to your desired length before trimming the hedge.
78 Due to its double sided knives the hedge shears can be guided forward and backward or by oscillating movements from one to another side.
Cut the sides of the hedge first.
Cut the hedge from the bottom up.
While cutting, slightly tilt the cutting device in the direction of the cutting movement.
Move forward slowly and in a controlled manner.

Cut the hedge in trapezium shape. This prevents the lower hedge area from growing bare due to insufficient light.

As a rule of thumb: 10 cm inclination per metre hedge height.

For a 2m high hedge having a width of 80~cm at its base this means that its crown has a width of 40~cm , for example.

1 Pause with your work often when cutting hedges for extended periods and oil the cutting device. The oil ensures easy movement of the cutting device.

13 Slide the blade protection (2) again on the cutting device (1).

Maintenance and cleaning

ATIKA HSC 40-600 - Maintenance and cleaning - 1

Before each maintenance and cleaning work

  • Switch off device.
  • Wait until the cutting device does not longer move.
  • Remove the battery.

ATIKA HSC 40-600 - Before each maintenance and cleaning work - 1

Wear protective gloves during maintenance and cleaning work in the area of the cutting tool to avoid possible injuries.

Maintenance and repair work other than those described in this chapter is only allowed to be carried out by service staff.

For maintaining and cleaning, removed security devices must unconditionally be mounted properly and proved again.

Only use genuine spare parts. Other than genuine parts may result in unpredictable damages and injury.

Maintenance

To guarantee a long and reliable usage of the product carry out the following maintenance works regularly.

Check the device for obvious defects such as

-dull blades
deformed, broken or damaged blades
- loose fastening elements
- worn or damaged components
- correctly assembled and faultless covers and protective devices.

Cutting device (1)

Check the following regularly

the screw joints of the cutting device for firm fastening. Loose screw joints cause an unsatisfactory cutting result because the blades can no longer close correctly.

Risk of injury! Loose screw joints may separate during work resulting in cutting injuries.

the blades for notches. Too many notches make work more difficult because the blades are dull. These notches will also damage the wood.

Have the blades sharpened by a specialist.

the cutting device for deformed, broken or damaged blades.

Necessary repair works or maintenance have to be carried out before using the power tool.

Cleaning

Clean the hedge shears carefully after each use so that the faultless function is maintained.

112

Remove dirt, plant residues and moisture (plant sap) from the cutting device (1) after finishing work using a brush or a cloth.

Never clean the knives with water

Risk of corrosion!

  • Stubborn dirt and resin residues can be dissolved with a suitable cleaning agent (e.g. resin solvent).

Spray the front and back of the cutting device well. Allow the hedge shears to run briefly so that the agent can spread in the gaps.

After a short contact time, dry the cutting device with a cloth.

Then spray an environmentally friendly maintenance oil on the front and back of the cutting device.

Allow the hedge shears to run briefly so that the oil can spread in the gaps.

The oil ensures easy movement of the cutting device at all times. Oil also prevents rusting at locations you are not able to dry.

A cutting device that is not cleaned and oiled may become hot and damage the device.

Clean the case with a soft brush or a dry cloth.
Do not use solvents (gasoline, alcohol, etc.) for plastic parts, otherwise such parts may be damaged.
Do not clean the machine under running water or using a high-pressure cleaner.
Keep handles dry and free of oil, resin and grease.
Pay attention to that the ventilation slots for the motor cooling are free (risk of overheating).
