Frequently Asked Questions - Rumble 800 Combo FENDER

How do I connect my bass and adjust the gain?

Connect your active or passive bass to the INPUT jack. Set the GAIN to the center position, then adjust according to your bass's output level to avoid clipping. If the signal is too strong, lower the gain.

How do I activate overdrive?

Press the OVERDRIVE switch (E) to activate the circuit. The indicator lights up. Use the DRIVE (D) control for distortion and LEVEL (F) to balance the volume with the clean sound.

What does the Contour button do?

The CONTOUR function cuts the mids and boosts the bass and treble for a more punchy sound, ideal for slapping or at low volume. It can be combined with overdrive.

Can I use a footswitch to control overdrive?

Yes, connect a compatible Fender footswitch (economy included, vintage or LED) to the FTSW jack (R) on the rear. The front panel OVERDRIVE switch remains functional. Make sure overdrive is off if using the LED model.

How do I connect an external speaker?

Use the EXT. SPKR output (M) with a Speakon or 1/4" speaker cable. Set the impedance switch to 4 Ω or 8 Ω according to the speaker. Never allow the conductors to come into contact with the chassis.

Can I use headphones?

Yes, connect stereo headphones (minimum impedance 16 Ω) to the PHONES jack (Q). The internal speaker is automatically muted.

What if the amp doesn't turn on?

Check the power cord and outlet. Make sure the POWER switch (K) is ON. If the indicator remains off, consult a Fender technician. A 20-30 second delay may occur during fast power cycles.

How do I use the effects loop?

Connect the SEND output (O) to the input of your effects, and the output of the effects to the RETURN input. This reduces noise. For a multi-amp setup, connect SEND of the first to RETURN of the second.

What does the orange light on the front panel mean?

The POWER/STATUS indicator (J) lights orange in protection mode (overheating or short circuit) or briefly during power-up/down. In normal operation, rapid orange flashes indicate a harmless level peak; red means power on.

How do I clean the amp?

Use a dry, soft cloth to dust. Do not use solvents, alcohol, or abrasive products. Make sure the amp is unplugged before cleaning.

Thanks for buying a Fender Rumble 800 bass amplifier. Fender bass amplifiers are legendary for providing thick, natural and balanced tone that sits fat in your live or studio mix. CONTROL PANEL

A. INPUT: Plug passive or active bass in here. If bass is too hot and causes unwanted distortion, turn GAIN control down.
B. GAIN: Adjusts incoming signal level (0dB to +20dB), optimizing preamp signal level for a variety of basses. Setting this control to noon is a good starting point; GAIN setting also affects level of distortion/compression when VINTAGE and/or OVERDRIVE are selected.
C. BRIGHT, CONTOUR AND VINTAGE: BRIGHT adds presence and shimmer in the upper frequencies. CONTOUR is a mid-frequency cut, combined with low- and high-frequency boosts that offer a fat pleasing tone, useful for slap and low-volume playing, or in combination with OVERDRIVE (E). VINTAGE creates a dark tone rich with harmonics and some natural compression.
D. DRIVE: Controls amount of harmonically rich preamp distortion when OVERDRIVE (E) is engaged.
E. OVERDRIVE: Activates overdrive circuit and controls; light indicates use.
F. LEVEL: Controls overdrive volume when OVERDRIVE (E) is engaged. Use to balance volume levels between clean and overdrive tones.

G. FOUR-BAND EQUALIZATION: Adjusts overall tone and compensates for room acoustics. See "Specifications" section for control parameters.
H. MASTER: Controls overall amp volume. When setting MASTER higher or playing more aggressively, modified Fender Delta-Comp™ limiter circuitry delivers more tube-like response to speakers with greater compression, harmonics and sustain.
I. OUTPUT SWITCH: Set switch to FULL for normal maximum power (800W or 400W internal). Set to LOW to get the same tone at reduced output/volume levels (200W or 100W internal).
J. POWER/STATUS INDICATOR: Illuminates solid red when power is on; flashes amber when maximum output power is produced for short periods (normal for uncompressed bass guitar). Illuminates solid amber when amp enters "protect mode" (see Thermal Performance and Protection) and briefly during power on/off.

REAR PANEL

K. POWER SWITCH: Turns amplifier on and off. When quickly turning the power off and then on again, a brief delay can occur for 20-30 seconds.

L. IEC POWER INLET: Connect included power cord to a grounded A/C electrical outlet in accordance with voltage and frequency ratings specified on rear panel of amplifier.

M. EXTERNAL SPEAKER OUTPUT/IMPEDANCE SWITCH : Connect an external speaker cabinet (8Ω or 4Ω minimum impedance) to this combination output using a Speakon® or 1/4" cable. Set switch to match impedance rating of external cabinet; continuous power rating of external cabinet must meet or exceed power rating listed for chosen switch setting. Set switch to 8Ω when no external cabinet is connected.

The Rumble 800 Combo's high-power class "D" amplifier operates in bridge mode, meaning that voltage is present in both terminals (+) and (-). Use caution when connecting a speaker cable to the External Speaker output on the rear panel—never let the tip (+) or sleeve (-) of a speaker cable (see illustration below) contact the amp's metal chassis or any other earth-grounded electrical equipment (i.e., audio mixers and other sound reinforcement devices). A speaker cable plugged into the amp's External Speaker output should be connected only to another speaker cabinet.

Connect a footswitch to amplifier to remotely engage OVERDRIVE (E). Three Fender footswitches will work (shown at right with part numbers; Economy footswitch model is included with Rumble 800 combo), or any generic single-button latching-type footswitch will work. Contact a local Fender dealer to purchase a Fender footswitch of choice.

During footswitch use, front-panel OVERDRIVE switch remains functional. Note that normal front-panel switch position (in=ON, out=OFF) can become reversed depending on footswitch status. Overdrive LED status on front panel will always be correct, but indicator light on an LED footswitch (such as model 0994052000 at right) may display incorrectly (i.e., LED is off when OVERDRIVE is on) depending on front-panel switch status. When using an LED footswitch, keep front-panel OVERDRIVE switch in OUT position to ensure correct display status on footswitch LED.

N. HORN SWITCH: Activates high-frequency driver.

O. EFFECTS LOOP: Connect SEND to external effect input; connect external effect output to RETURN. Effects loop use reduces amount of noise and tone degradation caused by effects pedals. For multi-amp configuration, connect primary amp SEND to secondary amp RETURN. Instrument is connected to primary amp; preamp controls will adjust tone for both units (secondary unit preamp controls are bypassed). Use MASTER volume on both amps to independently control loudness of each.

P. AUX IN: Connect external audio player here. Adjust aux signal volume/tone at its source; amp MASTER volume (H) doesn't affect external device volume. Earth-grounded audio equipment such as a laptop with a connected power supply may result in unwanted noise/hum.

Q. HEADPHONES: Stereo headphone output (16Ω minimum impedance) automatically mutes speaker output.

R. FOOTSWITCH: Allows remote switching of OVERDRIVE section. See "Footswitches" section below.

S. LINE OUT/GROUND LIFT: Balanced output for connection to external devices such as sound reinforcement and recording equipment. Pressing GND LIFT button can help eliminate noise caused by connection to improperly grounded equipment. Select PRE for direct unaffected signal; select POST for fully processed signal (except MASTER). Speaker cabinet connection not required for silent recording applications.

FOOTSWITCHES

ECONOMY FOOTSWITCH (Included, PN 0994049000): Basic black single-button on/off footswitch.

VINTAGE FOOTSWITCH (Optional, PN 0994054000): Chrome single-button on/off footswitch.

LED FOOTSWITCH (Optional, PN 0994052000): Contemporary single-button on/off footswitch with LED indicator. NOTE: For correct operation of footswitch LED, overdrive effect must be switched off before connecting this footswitch.

THERMAL PERFORMANCE AND PROTECTION

The Rumble 800 Combo uses a class-D power amplifier with thermal and short circuit protection. In the event of a short circuit, the amplifier will temporarily mute (no sound from speakers; power indicator illuminates solid amber) and resume normal operation when the fault is removed (power indicator returns to solid red).

For increased thermal performance, the Rumble 800 combo has variable-speed fan cooling that starts at low speed and increases as amplifier temperature rises with playing use.

Leave at least 6" clearance between the amplifier vents and other objects. If the amplifier vents are blocked or if the amp is used in an extremely hot environment, the amp may overheat and

trigger thermal protection, causing temporary speaker muting (power indicator illuminates solid amber). Normal operation will automatically resume after the temperature cools to a level within operating range (power indicator returns to solid red).

Under the most severe operating conditions, the amp can overheat to the point of interrupting power, resulting in no sound from the speakers. In this unlikely event, normal operation will automatically resume after the temperature cools to a level within operating range.
