8.2 Automatic switch-off
If no buttons are touched during operation (during an active pumping session), the pump unit will automatically switch to start- up mode after 30 minutes. This does not apply when the Memory funct ion is being used. In other words, once started, a saved pumping session will always run through until the end before the device switches to start-up mode. If no buttons are touched when the pump uni t is in start-up mode or pause mode, it will automatically switch off after 15 minutes.
8.3 Mobile operation
You can also use the pump while moving about your room, using the shoulder strap to carry it. The shoulder strap is securely fixed to the pump unit.
1. Should the shoulder strap need cleaning,
detach it from the lug 1, wash it in water with a little soap or gentle detergent, and air dry it
2. before reattaching it to the lug 1 on the
pump unit. Note: The s houlder strap 20 must not be sterilised.
8.4 Feeding expressed milk
Screw the feeding teat 15 onto the breast milk container 12 using the screw ring 16. 9 Tips for Successful Expressing Correct expressing takes practice. You will first need to get used to your new pump.
How often you need to express depends on the reason for expressing. If you will be apart from your child and/or want to sustain milk production, the natural breastfeeding rhythm should be maintained. You should therefore express 6 to 8 times daily, including once during the night. In all other cases you should express entirely according to your personal wishes and requirements.
Milk should be expressed from each breast in turn. The different settings you can choose for your pumping session allow you to emulate the natural suckling action of your baby as closely as possible.
- In the "stimulation phase", the rhythm is
apid and urgent to stimulate the milk flow reflex. This emulates the suckling action of most babies, which will initially suck rapidly and avidly at the start of feeding.
- In the "milk flow phase", suction is slow and strong to ensure maximum milk flow.33 Again, this corresponds to most babies' natural behaviour. As soon as a baby’s initial appetite is satisfied, it will change to a calm, slow and intensive sucking action while drinking its fill. If the milk flow drops:
Alternatively, you can repeat the"stimulation phase" in order to stimulate your milk flow reflex anew. The amount of time needed to express milk
ill vary considerably from one person to another.
9.3 Quantity of milk
Don't be surprised if it takes a little while for the milk to start to flow properly at first. This is not unusual. In fact it is quite normal because milk production adapts itself to daily req uirements. This means that the quantity of milk
oduced may vary considerably.
- Ensure you drink plenty of liquid yourself.
- Do not set suction strength too high. A higher suction strength does not increase the quantity of milk produced.
During natural breastfeeding, placing the baby on the breast stimulates the let-down reflex and milk begins to flow. You can also stimulate the let-down reflex as follows:
- Find yourself a quiet place to sit, where you can relax fully when using the breast pump.
- Adopt a comfortable and relaxed sitting position.
- Place a warm compress on your breast for a few minutes, to relax the tissue, and massage your breast.
- The let-down reflex triggers milk flow in both breasts simultaneously. You can use the NUK Breast Shell Set to collect breast milk leaking from the breast you are not currently expressing. 10 Hygiene tips Hygiene is particularly important when using the breast pump. This applies to all the individual pump components as well as to your own personal hygiene. We recommend regularly washing your nipples in clean water. Where possible, avoid using soap on your nipples, as this can cause irritation. 11 Storing Milk
11.1 With Breast Milk
Container Breast milk may be chilled, frozen and defrosted in the breast milk container 12. The breast milk container 12 may also be used for warming and feeding. It is
mportant that you follow the instructions about handling breast milk which is provided in “11.2 Important notes for handling breast milk” on page 34. Warning! T o ensure adequate hygiene at all times: If your collected breast milk is not for immed iate use, firmly seal the filled breast milk container 12 with the sealing disc 18 and screw ring 16 and store it in your refrigerator or freeze it. Using a suitable pen or label, write
he date and the time when the breast milk was expressed. Be sure to note the retention periods in “11.2 Important notes for handling breast milk” on page 34.34 Caution! To avoid damage:
- When freezing breast milk, do not fill the
reast milk container 12 with more than 150 ml (5 fl oz), as breast milk expands as it freezes and the container could burst. For a spacesaving solution you can use NUK Breast Milk Bags for freezing and storage of breast milk.
11.2 Important notes for handling breast milk
Warning! To ensure adequate hygiene at all times: If transporting chilled breast milk make sure that it stays chilled at all times, otherwise the milk could go off and be harmful to your baby. Use a cooler bag with ice packs, for example. Defrosted, warmed or unused milk mus t be disposed of and not refrozen. Warning! Risk of scalding and risk of destroying valuable nutrients: Do not use a microwave to defrost
reast milk, as this can destroy valuable nutrients and damage the container material (risk of explosion). Uneven heating may result in scalding! If milk is heated excessively, you
isk destroying the vitamins and other valuable nutrients it contains. There is also a risk of scalding for your baby. Always check the temperature of
our warmed up breast milk before feeding it to your baby.
1. To achieve the correct drinking
emperature of approx. 37 °C, put the container of defrosted breast milk in the baby food warmer. Caution! The container must be open to prevent pressure build-up as the milk warms up.
2. Shake the milk gently before feeding so
that milk and milk fat are properly mixed again.
3. If you express breast milk more than
once within a period of 24 hours, the freshly expressed milk may be added to the previously cooled breast milk. However freshly expressed milk must be cooled down before being added to milk that is already cool. The temperatures must be the same (cold on cold). Notes:
- Consult your health visitor, midwife,
octor or pharmacist for detailed information about long-term storage.
- You can find more information about breastfeeding on our NUK website (www.nuk.com).
