3. General Safety Instructions

METABO AV 18 - General Safety Instructions - 1

For your own protection and for the protection of your electrical device, pay attention to all parts of the text that are marked with this symbol!

METABO AV 18 - General Safety Instructions - 2

WARNING - Reading the operating instructions will reduce the risk of injury.

Pass on your electrical device only together with these documents.

General SafetyWarnings for Electronic Devices

METABO AV 18 - General SafetyWarnings for Electronic Devices - 1

WARNING - Read all safety warnings and instructions. Failure to follow all safety

warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all safety warnings and information for future reference! The term "electrical device" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) electrical device or battery-operated (cordless) electrical device.

3.1 Work Area Safety

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate the electrical device in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Electronic devices create sparks which might ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

3.2 Electrical safety

a) Do not expose electrical devices to rain or wet conditions. Water entering an electrical device will increase the risk of electric shock.

3.3 Personal Safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating an electrical device. Do not use an electrical device while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication.
A moment of inattention while operating electrical devices may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection, depending on the type and application of the electrical device, will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the electrical device. Carrying electrical devices with your finger on the switch or energising devices that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting devices or wrenches before turning on the electrical device. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the device may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.

This enables better control of the electrical device in unexpected situations.

f) Wear appropriate clothing. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

3.4 Electrical device use and care

a) Never use electrical devices with a defective switch. Electrical devices that can no longer be

switched on or off are dangerous and must be repaired immediately.

b) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the electrical device before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing devices.
Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the electrical device accidentally.
c) Store idle electrical devices out of the reach of children. Do not allow persons unfamiliar with the device or these instructions to operate the device. Electrical devices are dangerous when used by inexperienced personnel.
d) Maintain electrical devices with care. Check that the moving parts are functioning properly and do not jam, that there is no breakage of parts or any other condition that may affect the electrical device's operation. If damaged, have the device repaired before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained electrical tools.
e) Use electrical devices, accessories, equipment etc. according to these instructions. Take into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Using electrical devices for applications other than those intended can lead to dangerous situations.

3.5 Cordless device use and care

a) Always charge the batteries only in chargers recommended by the manufacturer. Chargers designed for a specific type of battery may pose a fire hazard when used together with other battery types.
b) Use electrical devices only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
c) When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
d) Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery. Avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.

3.6 Service

a) Have your electrical device serviced by a qualified repair person using only genuine replacement parts. This will ensure that the electrical device functions safely.

Reducing dust exposure:

METABO AV 18 - Reducing dust exposure: - 1

WARNING - Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other

ENGLISHen

construction activities contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

  • Lead from lead-based paints,
  • Crystalline silica from bricks and cement and other masonry products, and
  • Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.

This also applies to dust from other materials such as some timber types (like oak or beech dust), metals, asbestos. Other known diseases are e.g. allergic reactions, respiratory diseases. Do not let dust enter the body.

Observe the relevant guidelines and national regulations for your material, staff, application and place of application (e.g. occupational health and safety regulations, disposal).

Collect the particles generated at the source, avoid deposits in the surrounding area.

Use suitable accessories for special work. In this way, fewer particles enter the environment in an uncontrolled manner.

Use a suitable extraction unit.

Reduce dust exposure with the following measures:

  • do not direct the escaping particles and the exhaust air stream at yourself or nearby persons or on dust deposits,
  • use an extraction unit and/or air purifiers,
  • ensure good ventilation of the workplace and keep clean using a vacuum cleaner. Sweeping or blowing stirs up dust.
Vacuum or wash the protective clothing. Do not blow, beat or brush.

The ideal storage temperature is between 10^ and 30^ .

Li-ion battery packs "Li-Power" have a capacity and signal indicator (9):

  • Press the button (10), the LEDs indicate the charge level.
  • If one LED is flashing, the battery pack is almost flat and must be recharged.

Removing and inserting the battery pack

Removal: Press the battery pack release (4) button and pull the battery pack (2) upwards.

Inserting: Slide in the battery pack (2) until it engages.

7. Use

Tilting metal cage (1) for flexible adjustment of the air flow: Release the clamping lever (5), adjust to the required angle and then secure the clamping lever.

Insert a fully charged battery pack (2) (taking into account the particular model).

7.1 On/Off switch, setting the speed

Avoid switching on the machine accidentally: always switch it off when the battery pack is removed from the machine.
