Why does the THETFORD N3145 automatically switch to 220V instead of operating on gas or 12V?
Frequently Asked Questions - 27 j
Response Notice-Facile

The THETFORD N3145 is equipped with a automatic energy source selection system. The device automatically switches according to this priority order: electricity 220V, battery 12V, then gas. This explains why it switches to 220V as soon as this source is available.

Conditions for operation on gas and 12V

  • Gas: Only operates if the gas connection is properly connected and the refrigerator does not have access to electricity 220V. Only bottled gas (propane or butane) is compatible, not natural gas.
  • 12V (vehicle battery): Depends on the quality of the wiring, its diameter, and its length. The vehicle's engine must be running.

If you wish to use gas or 12V, disconnect the device from the 220V power supply or check that the energy selector on the control board is not locked in automatic mode.

How to access the control board of the THETFORD N3145 to replace it?
Frequently Asked Questions - 12/05/2026
Response Notice-Facile

The electronic board (PCB) of the Thetford N3145 refrigerator is generally located at the back of the unit, behind a plastic cover. This access allows a technician to replace the control board if necessary.

Access procedure:

  • Disconnect the power supply to the refrigerator by unplugging the power cord or turning off the circuit breaker
  • If the refrigerator is installed in a motorhome or caravan, also turn off the gas supply by closing the bottle valve
  • Position yourself at the back of the refrigerator
  • Locate the black access panel (or plastic cover) secured with screws at the bottom of the fridge
  • Unscrew the screws that secure this panel using an appropriate screwdriver
  • Carefully remove the cover to access the electronic board and its connectors

Important before any intervention: If the installation in a motorhome or caravan makes rear access difficult, it may be more practical to completely remove the refrigerator from its location before proceeding with the manipulations.

Essential recommendation: The replacement of the electronic board should be entrusted to a qualified technician or an authorized Thetford service center. According to the manual, no repair of electrical components should be undertaken by the user without appropriate training. Contact your authorized Thetford dealer or visit www.thetford-europe.com to locate a service center in your area.

For France, you can contact Thetford S.A.R.L. at +33 1 30 37 58 23 or consult the manual for the address of the nearest authorized service center to your home.

Respond (be the first)
What does error code 18 mean on the THETFORD N3145 refrigerator and how can it be resolved?
Frequently Asked Questions - 24/04/2026
Response Notice-Facile

Error code 18 on the THETFORD N3145 refrigerator generally indicates a problem related to the refrigeration system. This malfunction can have several causes:

  • Refrigerant gas shortage: An insufficient level of gas or a leak can prevent the refrigeration circuit from functioning properly.
  • Electrical issues: Check that the power supply voltage is correct and that the fuses are not blown.
  • Airflow obstruction: Blockages at the air outlets or condenser can hinder the airflow necessary for cooling.

To attempt to resolve this issue, you can follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the refrigerator for a few minutes, then turn it back on to reset the system.
  2. Check the electrical connections, fuses, and ensure that the appliance is properly powered.
  3. Clean the areas around the refrigerator, including the ventilation grilles and condenser, to ensure good airflow.

If the error code persists after these checks, it is recommended to contact a qualified professional for a thorough diagnosis and appropriate repair.

Respond (be the first)
What does the flashing of all the indicators on the THETFORD N3145 refrigerator panel mean and how can I resolve this issue?
Frequently Asked Questions - 16/04/2026
Response Notice-Facile

The simultaneous flashing of all the indicators on your THETFORD N3145 refrigerator panel may indicate a system error code or a temporary alert during startup. Here’s how to diagnose and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Immediate Reset

  • Completely turn off the refrigerator by pressing the On/Off button for a few seconds.
  • Wait 10 to 15 seconds before turning it back on.
  • Observe if the flashing stops after the restart.

Step 2: Identify the Specific Error Code

The flashing may correspond to a system error code. If this problem persists after the reset, press and hold the three control buttons (the two arrows and the confirmation button) simultaneously until the flashing stops. The temperature bars that light up then indicate your error code. Codes 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, or 13 require technical intervention. Code 18 (all symbols lit) is normal during startup and should stop after a few seconds.

Step 3: Check Power Sources

  • Ensure that the refrigerator has a power source available (12V from the vehicle when on, 230V mains, or gas).
  • On 12V battery: make sure the motor of the camper or caravan is running and the battery is well charged.
  • On 230V mains: check that the outlet is functional (test with another device).
  • On gas: check that the bottle is not empty and that all valves are open.

Step 4: Check Connections and Ventilation

  • Ensure that the refrigerator is level and stable.
  • Check that the ventilation grilles (back and sides) are not blocked and allow for adequate air circulation.
  • Clear any obstructions around the appliance that could block airflow.

If the flashing persists after these checks, contact a THETFORD dealer or an authorized technical service center immediately. The problem may indicate a fault in the cooling system or an electrical component requiring qualified professional intervention.

The refrigerator is powered from the battery of your vehicle.

THETFORD N3145 - Sources - 4

Gas

The refrigerator is powered from the gas connection of a gas bottle.

If you set the refrigerator on the automatic source selection, the control panel will show two source symbols; the A and the best source available.

Always use the gas connection or mains voltage to start up and cool. Operating on 12V is only effective while the engine of the vehicle is running.

The performance of the refrigerator, when operating on 12V, is dependent on the thickness and length of the wiring and the overall installation of the vehicle.

Sufficient power and voltage must be available in order for 12 V units (e.g. refrigerator, ATC, etc) to operate reliably while travelling. In rare cases, due to the towing vehicle's battery management system, in some car models there may not be enough power and voltage available for external units. If this is the case, please contact the car manufacturer directly for further information.

THETFORD N3145 - Sources - 5

To secure optimal performance, deactivate the start/stop system on your vehicle if present.

If the refrigerator is powered by a gas connection, make sure that the control panel is powered from the battery or AA batteries [in the case of a standalone model].

When selecting gas, the flame should be ignited within 30 seconds. If the system fails, restart the refrigerator and select the gas source again.

For safety reasons it is not possible to ignite the flame within 15 minutes after driving.

From about 1000m above sea level problems of a physical nature can occur when lighting the gas. This does not mean that the refrigerator is not working properly.

Stand-alone model

The refrigerator is only functional, when the control panel is powered. A stand-alone model (installed by your dealer) is operational using AA batteries in the event of no mains or battery.

THETFORD N3145 - Stand-alone model - 1

Therefore open the small cover underneath the control panel, as illustrated. Insert 6 new 1.5V AA/LR6 batteries, according the illustration in the cover.
