How to charge the battery of the SELPHYSQUARE QX10S printer?

Use the supplied charging cable and a USB power adapter (5.0 V, 1 A minimum, sold separately). Plug the cable into the printer's charging terminal and the power adapter. The CHARGE indicator blinks green during charging and lights up solid green when charging is complete. Full charging takes about 2 hours at room temperature.

How to load paper into the printer?

Press the open button to unlock and open the paper compartment cover. Place up to 10 sheets of SELPHY special paper with the printing surface (no Canon logo) facing down. Align the paper edge with the indicated marks. Do not push the paper too far. Close the cover.

How to install the ink cartridge?

Open the ink cartridge compartment cover. Insert the XS-20L ink cartridge into the printer in the correct orientation until it clicks into place. Close the cover.

How to connect the printer to my smartphone?

Download and install the SELPHY Photo Layout app from the App Store or Google Play. Enable location services on your smartphone. Turn on the printer, then follow the app instructions to scan the QR code on the printer (label) and register the device.

What to do if the printer does not turn on?

Check the battery level. If it is low, recharge it. If it does not charge, use a thin rod to press the forced shutdown switch on the printer, then recharge. If the problem persists, contact Canon customer service.

How to resolve a paper jam?

How to reset the printer's network settings?

To reset settings (e.g., if you forget the password), turn on the printer, press and hold the power button until the STATUS indicator turns off (about 1 second), then press and hold again until the indicator blinks. • Place the printer on a table or other flat, stable surface. Never place the printer on an unstable or tilted surface.
• Do not place objects in front of the delivery outlet that may interfere with the paper during printing.
• The QR code label is needed when you register the printer again, such as when you change your model of smartphone. Take a photo of the QR code with the camera function of your smartphone, etc. and store it carefully.

• If the ink sheet is loose, turn the sprocket gently to tighten it. Do not touch the ink sheet.

Charging the battery

1 Connect the printer and the charging USB AC adapter (sold separately) with the accessory charging cable.

The CHARGE lamp begins to blink green and charging starts. When the CHARGE lamp lights up green, charging is complete.

Installing the app

The smartphone application SELPHY Photo Layout is needed to print with this product.

1 Download and install the latest version of SELPHY Photo Layout.

Search for "SELPHY Photo Layout" from the App Store (in case of an iPhone, iPad) or Google Play (in case of an Android smartphone), and install SELPHY Photo Layout.

2 Start SELPHY Photo Layout.

• Turn on location services on the smartphone.
• Turn off power saving mode and other functions that reduce smartphone battery consumption. Follow the on-screen instructions.

For information on how to operate the printer, such as loading the paper or replacing the ink cassette, refer to [Printer Manual] of SELPHY Photo Layout.

Preparing the printer and printing

This section describes how to turn on the power, load the paper, load the ink cassette, register the printer (QR code), print, and turn off the power.

1 Turn on the power.

Hold down the Power button until the STATUS lamp begins to blink white, then wait until the STATUS lamp lights up.

2 Load the paper.

Press the Open button to release the lock, and open the paper compartment cover. - Set the paper (up to 10 sheets) with the printing surface (the surface without the Canon logo) facing downward, being careful not to touch the printing surface. Align the edge of the paper with the circled parts. Do not push the paper to the back of the compartment. - Close the paper compartment cover.

3 Load the ink cassette.

• Open the ink cassette compartment cover.
• Insert the correctly oriented new ink cassette into the printer until it clicks into place.

4 Connect and register the printer using the QR code.

• Follow the instructions displayed on the smartphone screen and connect and register the printer using the QR code.
• Close the ink cassette compartment cover.

5 Print.

Print the images with SELPHY Photo Layout. When printing is finished, remove the paper from the printer.

6 Turn off the power.

After use, hold down the Power button until the STATUS lamp turns off.

Printing Precautions

• Set the paper with the printing surface (the surface without the Canon logo) facing downward, being careful not to touch the printing surface.
• Do not use paper that has already been printed on or that has written text or other markings.
• The paper extends from the delivery outlet multiple times during printing. Do not pull on the paper until the message indicating to remove the paper is displayed on the smartphone.
• Do not interrupt communication until printing is finished. If communication is interrupted, printing may be performed only partway.
• Do not open the ink cassette compartment cover or the paper compartment cover while the printer is operating.
• If the 'Standing by to print' status continues for approximately 10 minutes, the power will automatically turn off. To resume printing, press the Power button.

Adapter and charging time: Use a charger with a rated power output of DC 5.0 V, 1000 mA or more to charge the product. Charging takes approximately 2 hours at room temperature, but this time may increase depending on the condition of the battery used and the charging environment. All data is based on tests by Canon. - Printer specifications or appearance are subject to change without notice.

Troubleshooting

If you think the printer may have malfunctioned, first refer to the examples below and check the printer. If the status does not improve even after checking the relevant items, contact a Customer Support Help Desk.

Power

The power does not turn on.

Check the battery level. If the battery does not charge, press the Forced shutdown switch (4) with a thin rod and then charge the battery again.

Charging

The battery cannot be charged.

• The battery cannot be charged during printing. Charge the battery in the 'Standing by to print' status or the 'Power off' status. Use the specified battery charger. If the battery does not charge, press the Forced shutdown switch (4) with a thin rod and then charge the battery again.

The battery runs down quickly.

Battery performance will decrease at low temperatures. Battery consumption may increase depending on the printing settings. Battery power is consumed in the 'Standing by to print' status. To increase the number of sheets that can be printed with a single charge, it is recommended to turn off the power each time printing is finished. - The app indicates the approximate battery level, and the battery may run down quickly depending on the printing conditions. It is recommended to charge the battery soon after use.

A charging error occurs. (STATUS lamp: blinks slowly red, CHARGE lamp: blinks slowly green)

• Charging will pause when the printer is a certain temperature or higher. This is not a malfunction. Disconnect the battery charger, turn off the power, and wait for the printer to cool down. Charging errors will occur more easily when printing continuously, when the ambient temperature is high, and when the inside of the printer is hot.

Charging takes a long time or a charging error occurs. (STATUS lamp: blinks quickly red, CHARGE lamp: blinks quickly green)

• When the printer has not been used for a long period of time, the charging time may increase or a charging error may occur. If this happens, charge the battery again. Use the specified battery charger. (11) If the problem is not resolved, contact a Customer Support Help Desk.

Printing

Printing is not possible.

• Check that the power is turned on. (Fig. 7)
• Check that the ink cassette and paper are loaded correctly. (7, 8)
• Check that the ink sheet is not loose. (4)
• Check that paper other than the specified paper is not being used. (3)
• If the ink cassette has run out, replace it with a new ink cassette. If there is no paper, load the paper. (7, 8)

Images cannot be printed cleanly.

• Check that the ink sheet and paper are not dirty.
• Check that dust and dirt have not adhered inside the printer.
• Check that condensation has not occurred in the printer.
• Check that the printer is not installed near equipment that emits electromagnetic waves or strong magnetic fields.

The smartphone screen colors differ from the printed colors.

• The color expression method differs for smartphone screens and printing. Colors also differ according to the environment (lighting color and intensity) in which the screen is viewed and the screen color adjustments.

Printing takes time.

• Printing will pause when the printer is a certain temperature or higher. This is not a malfunction. Wait a bit before printing again, or turn off the power and wait for the printer to cool down.
• Printing will pause occasionally so printing will take longer than usual when printing continuously, when the ambient temperature is high, and when the inside of the printer is hot.
• The number of times printing pauses may increase depending on the printing settings.

Printing cannot be stopped.

• Even if you cancel printing partway, printing continues until the printing in progress is finished.
• When printing is canceled partway through printing of multiple sheets, printing stops after the current sheet is finished.

Paper

The paper is not fed properly or the jams frequently.

Check that the paper is set correctly. (7) - Check that the paper is not peeling or folded and has not already been printed on. - Check that 11 or more sheets have not been loaded. - Check that paper other than the specified paper is not being used. (3)

The specified number of sheets cannot be printed, or paper remains.

• Paper may remain if the ink cassette runs out.

Paper is not ejected from the delivery outlet.

• If the paper extends partially from the front of the printer, pull out the paper. However, if the paper cannot be pulled out by lightly gripping it with your fingers, do not pull excessively on the paper. In this case, turn the power off and then on again repeatedly until the paper is ejected. If you accidentally turn off the power during printing, turn on the power again and wait until the paper is ejected.
• If the paper has jammed, contact a Customer Support Help Desk. Do not attempt to remove the jammed paper by force. This may cause malfunction.

Wi-Fi

The message "The printer cannot be found." is displayed.

• Check that the power is turned on. (Fig. 7)
• Turn on location services on the smartphone.
• To newly register the printer to the app, tap in the upper left corner of the app home screen and then tap "Do you want to use another QX10? >".
• Registration using the QR code will not be possible if the password has been changed using "Change the password". In this case, register the printer manually.
• If you forgot the password, do the following to initialize the printer settings and then register the printer to the app again.

Turn on the power. → Press and hold the Power button. After 1 second, the STATUS lamp turns off. → Continue pressing the Power button. → When the STATUS lamp begins to blink, release the Power button.

Printing takes time.

• Do not use the printer near a microwave oven or equipment (Bluetooth, etc.) that uses frequencies in the 2.4 GHz band. This may degrade the Wi-Fi signal environment.
• Place the printer and smartphone close to each other without any objects between them.

App

The QR code cannot be scanned.

• Check that there is no shadow on the QR code and that the QR code is being scanned from the front.
• Some smartphones may be unable to scan the QR code well. In this case, register the printer manually.

The message "This photo cannot be used." is displayed.

• If "This photo cannot be used." is displayed by the app, the image size may be too large. Shrink, trim, or otherwise reduce the image size and then try to print again.

When an error message is displayed

• When trouble occurs in the printer, the printer lamps will indicate an error and a message will also be displayed on the smartphone screen. When the action to be taken is displayed together with the error message, perform the instructed operations. When only an error message is displayed, refer to the examples in "Troubleshooting" and check the relevant items. If the problem is not resolved, contact a Customer Support Help Desk.
• When turning the printer off and back on again, make sure that the paper and ink cassette are loaded correctly before turning on the power.

Updating the app and the printer

Always use the latest version of SELPHY Photo Layout. (6) - It may be necessary to update the printer firmware when printing. This requires a sufficient battery level. - Do not turn off the power or press the Forced shutdown switch while firmware update is in progress.

Storing printed photos

Use a permanent marker to write characters on photos. - To prevent discoloration of printed surfaces, avoid storing photos in places subject to temperatures above 40°C (104°F), humid or dusty places, and places subject to direct sunlight. - Do not attach adhesive tape to printed surfaces, allow printed surfaces to contact a vinyl desk mat, business card case, or plastic eraser, apply volatile solvents such as alcohol to printed surfaces, or leave printed surfaces in close contact with other objects, etc. This may cause discoloration, color fading, or color transfer. - When storing photos in an album, select an album with nylon, polypropylene, or cellophane pockets.

Printed surfaces may become discolored depending on the storage state and time. Canon cannot be held liable for this.

Tidying up after printing

• Turn off the power.
• Store the paper and ink cassette loaded in the printer.
• Store the printer in the level condition in a dark place free of dust and dirt. Dust or dirt entering the printer may cause white stripes in photos or other malfunction.

Store unopened paper and ink cassettes in a dark place.

Daily handling

• Do not expose the product to strong force or vibration. This may cause paper jams or other malfunction.
• Do not expose the product to insecticides or volatile substances. Also do not allow the product to contact rubber or vinyl products for long periods of time. This may cause the exterior to degrade.
• When moving the printer from a cold place to a hot place, seal the printer in a vinyl bag to prevent condensation and let the printer adjust to the ambient temperature before removing it from the bag. In the event that condensation occurs, leave the printer at room temperature until the water droplets disappear naturally before using the printer. Wipe away dirt from the printer with a soft, dry cloth.

• Never wipe the printer using neutral detergent or solvents such as benzine or paint thinner. This may cause the exterior to degrade or deform or the paint to peel.

Wi-Fi (Wireless LAN) Precautions

• This product is embedded with a wireless device. The model number is CD1158 (including WLAN module model WM321). Countries and Regions Permitting WLAN Use

Use of WLAN is restricted in some countries and regions, and illegal use may be punishable under national or local regulations. To avoid violating WLAN regulations, visit the Canon website to check where use is allowed.

Note that Canon cannot be held liable for any problems arising from WLAN use in other countries and regions.

If the message below appears: (7) The camera cannot be used. When you try to use the camera, a message like "Do you want to use another QX10?" may appear. If the QR code is not recognized, the camera may not be connected correctly. Follow the instructions to connect the camera again. If the problem persists, contact the service center.

To connect the camera to the smartphone: → Turn on the camera and the smartphone. 1. Press the button on the camera to turn it on. → Start the app on the smartphone. → If the camera is not detected, turn it off and on again.

The connection may take some time.

The camera uses the 2.4 GHz band for wireless connections (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi). It can connect to a Wi-Fi network. The camera and the smartphone must be within a certain distance for the connection to work.

If the QR code is not displayed, or if the QR code is not recognized, follow these steps: - Check the QR code display on the smartphone. Follow the instructions to display the QR code.

If "This photo cannot be used." is displayed:

• If "This photo cannot be used." is displayed, the photo may not be compatible. Check the photo format, or take a new photo with the camera, and then try again.

The photo may not be compatible.

If the photo is not compatible, it may not be displayed correctly, and the camera may not be able to process it. To use the photo, it must be in a compatible format. If the photo is not in a compatible format, convert it to a compatible format using the software provided. If the problem persists, contact the service center.

To connect to a Wi-Fi network, ensure the network is available and the password is correct. The device will automatically search for available networks. If the network is not found, check that the router is on and within range. For security, use a strong password and enable encryption. If you have trouble connecting, restart the router and the device.

Charging the battery

1 Connect the printer to a USB AC adapter (sold separately) using the dedicated charging cable.

The CHARGE lamp lights up and charging starts. When the CHARGE lamp turns off, charging is complete.

Installing the app

To use the printer, you need the SELPHY Photo Layout smartphone app.

1 Install the latest version of the SELPHY Photo Layout app.

Search for "SELPHY Photo Layout" in the App Store (for iPhone, iPad) or Google Play (for Android smartphones) and install it.

2 Launch the SELPHY Photo Layout app.

Connect the smartphone to the camera. You can use the camera's shooting modes and the smartphone battery's remaining capacity. Check the screen instructions.

For details on loading paper and ink cassettes, refer to the SELPHY Photo Layout app's [Printer Manual].

Printing and printing settings

This section describes how to insert paper, load ink cassettes, connect the printer (QR code), print, and replace the ink cassette.

1 Insert paper.

Press the paper cover release button, then open the paper cover.

2 Load paper.

Press the paper cover release button, then open the paper cover. Load the paper with the printable side (Canon Photo Paper Pro) facing up, and align it with the paper guide. Do not load more than 10 sheets. Close the paper cover.

3 Load the ink cassette.

Open the ink cassette cover.

Insert the ink cassette into the printer until it clicks into place.

4 Connect the printer using the QR code and print.

Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the QR code, connect the printer, and print. The ink cassette cover should be closed.

5 Print.

Print using the SELPHY Photo Layout app.

Before starting the printing process, turn on the printer's power.

Wait for the printer to warm up.

• After the warm-up is complete, the printer's STATUS (Ready) indicator will light up.

Starting the printing operation

To start printing, use the printer's operation panel or the printer driver. If the print job is not sent within a certain time, the print data may be deleted. During printing, the print data is stored in the printer's memory. If the print job is interrupted, the printing operation can only be resumed. - While the printer is in operation, you cannot cancel the print job using the printer's panel or the printer driver. If the "Print Data Remaining" indicator stays on for 10 minutes, the printer will automatically turn off. To print the remaining data, turn the printer back on.

If the paper is jammed, turn off the printer and then turn it back on. If the paper is jammed, contact customer support. Do not throw the jammed paper away. This may cause damage.

Wi-Fi

When storing photographs in an album, choose an album with non-PVC, polypropylene, or cellulose acetate pockets.

Printed surfaces may discolor depending on the condition and storage time. Canon Inc. is not responsible for such discoloration.

Error after printing

Turn off the power. Store paper and cassettes away from the printer. Store the printer horizontally in a dark place, protected from dust and dirt. Dust and dirt that get into the printer may cause white streaks on photographs or other malfunctions.

Store unopened paper and cassette packages in a dark place.

Daily handling

Do not expose the device to excessive vibration. This may cause paper jams or other malfunctions. Do not expose the device to shocks or volatile substances. Also, do not allow the device to come into contact with acidic or alcoholic objects for extended periods. This may cause damage to the exterior surfaces of the device. - When bringing the printer from a cold place to a warm one, place it in a sealed plastic bag to prevent condensation, and before removing the printer from the bag, allow it to warm up. In case of condensation, before use, leave the printer at room temperature until the water droplets disappear naturally. Remove the ink cartridges with a soft dry cloth.

Do not wipe the printer with a dirty cloth or with solvents such as benzene or paint thinner. This may cause damage to the exterior surfaces of the device, deformation, or peeling of the paint.

Do not use, leave, or store the product in the following places:

- In places where direct sunlight falls; - at temperatures above 40°C; - in humid, dusty places; - in places subject to strong vibration.

This may cause overheating or damage to the printer or adapter, which may result in electric shock, fire, or other injuries, and may also cause deformation of the product or adapter at high temperatures.

Printer preparation and operation

Read the information about turning on/off the printer, installing the cartridge, printer registration (QR code), printing and turning on/off.

1 Turn on the printer.

Press and hold the power button until the status indicator starts blinking, then release it and wait until the status indicator lights steadily.

2 Load paper.

Press the open button, open the paper cover, then open the paper feed slot. Place paper (up to 10 sheets) with the printable side (Canon logo side) facing down, and adjust the paper guides so they do not protrude from the paper. Do not insert paper beyond the paper feed slot. Close the paper feed slot cover.

3 Install the cartridge.

Open the cartridge cover.

Insert the new cartridge into the printer with the correct side facing the label.

4 Connect and register the printer using the QR code.

Follow the instructions on the smartphone screen and register the printer using the QR code. Close the cartridge cover.

If the printer was not used for a long time, the print quality may deteriorate. If the printer has not been used for a long time, clean the print head. Use the designated charging device. (11) If the problem is not resolved, contact the customer service center.

Printing

Printing is not possible.

• Check that the power cord is connected. (7)
• Check that the ink cartridge is installed correctly and the paper is loaded. (7, 8)
• Check that the paper is not jammed. (4)
• Check that the paper used is the designated paper. (3) The ink cartridge may be empty. Replace the ink cartridge. Load paper. (7, 8)

The printed image is blurry.

Check that the paper is not wrinkled or dirty. - Check that there is no dust or dirt inside the printer. - Check that the inside of the printer is not contaminated. Check that the printer is not placed near devices that generate electromagnetic waves or magnetic fields.

The colors on the printout differ from the colors on the screen.

The method of color reproduction on the screen and on paper differs. Also, colors vary depending on the environment (color and intensity of light) in which the document is viewed, and the color settings of the screen.

Printing takes a long time.

Printing will be temporarily paused if the printer temperature exceeds the specified level. This is not a malfunction. Wait a moment for printing to resume, or turn off the power and wait for the printer to cool down. Printing may pause temporarily from time to time, and therefore may take longer than usual. In case of continuous printing, high ambient temperature, or overuse of the printer, the number of temporary pauses may increase.

Printing cannot be paused.

To cancel a print job, press the Cancel button. Printing will continue until the current operation is completed. If you cancel printing while printing multiple pages, printing will be paused after the current page is finished.

Paper

• Check that the paper is installed correctly. (7)
• Check that the paper is not curled or wrinkled, and that there is no crease on it.
• Check that no more than 10 sheets are loaded.
• Make sure you are using paper for its intended purpose. (3)

Do not force the specified number of sheets, or the paper may jam.

• Paper may jam if the cartridge is empty.

Paper does not feed correctly from the tray for paper feeding.

If paper comes out of the printer only partially, pull it out gently. If the paper does not pull out, pull it slightly toward you, but do not pull it with force. In that case, press the feed button several times, then press it again until the paper is ejected. If paper jammed during printing, press the feed button again and wait until the paper is ejected. If paper is stuck, contact customer support. Do not attempt to pull out paper that is stuck by force. This may cause malfunction.

Wi-Fi

The printer cannot be found.

• Check that the smartphone is connected. (7) Turn on the smartphone's wireless connection. To re-register the printer in the app, tap the top right corner of the app's home screen, then select "Do you want to use another QX10?"
• Re-registration via QR code will be impossible if the password has been changed in the "Change the password" menu. In that case, register the printer manually. If you forgot the password, perform the factory reset described below and re-register the printer in the app. Turn on the power. Press and hold the power button. After 1 second, the status indicator will blink. Release the power button when the status indicator starts blinking.

Press and hold the button for a long time.

Do not use the printer near a microwave oven or Bluetooth device, as it uses the 2.4 GHz frequency band. This may degrade the Wi-Fi signal. Place the printer and smartphone close to each other so that there are no obstacles between them.

Program

It cannot be scanned with a QR code.

• Make sure that the QR code is not dirty and that the QR code is scanned from the front side. Some smartphones may not be able to scan QR codes. In that case, register the printer manually.

The message "This photo cannot be used." is displayed.

If the message "This photo cannot be used." is displayed, the image may be too large. Change the image size by cropping, rotating, or other means, and then try printing again.

If an error message is displayed

If a problem occurs during printer operation, the printer will notify you of the error and a message will appear on the smartphone screen. If a message appears along with the error, follow the instructions shown. If only an error message appears, check the "Troubleshooting" section and take the necessary steps. If the problem is not resolved, contact Canon customer support. - If you turn the printer off and on again, wait a moment before turning it on to ensure that the paper is loaded correctly and the ink cartridge is installed.

Updating the program and printer

Always use the latest version of SELPHY Photo Layout. Update the printer firmware if an update is available. For this, you need a sufficiently charged battery. Do not turn off the power or press the power switch during the firmware update.

Storing printed photos

Use a permanent marker to write on photos. To prevent discoloration of printed surfaces, do not store photos in places with temperatures above 40°C, high humidity, or direct sunlight. Do not stick adhesive stickers on printed surfaces, do not allow printed surfaces to come into contact with vinyl materials, adhesives, or rubber, do not apply solvents such as alcohol or spray to printed surfaces, and do not bring printed surfaces into contact with other materials. This may cause discoloration, fading, or color transfer. If you store photos in an album, use an album with non-PVC, polypropylene, or polyester sleeves.

Depending on the conditions and duration of storage, printed surfaces may discolor. Canon is not responsible for this.

After printing

Turn off the power. Remove the paper cassette and store it separately. Store the printer on a flat surface in a dark place without dust or dirt. If dust or dirt gets into the printer, it may cause white spots on photos or other malfunctions.

Store unused paper and ink cartridges in a dark place.

Protect the device from impacts or shocks. They can cause damage to the device or other malfunctions. Protect the device from impacts when connecting cables and connectors. Also, allow the device to remain in contact with moving or vibrating parts for a long time. This can cause damage to the external surface. If you need to move the printer from a cold place to a warm one, leave it in a closed plastic bag until condensation forms on it, then wait until the printer temperature reaches the ambient temperature, and only then remove the bag. If condensation has formed, before using the printer, leave it in a climate-controlled environment and wait until the drops have evaporated naturally. Wipe the printer with a soft, dry cloth.

Never clean the printer with harmful chemicals or solvents, such as benzene or thinners. This can cause damage to the external surface and lead to the release of harmful substances.

Issuance of certificates for the device.

Safety precautions

Since Wi-Fi uses radio waves for signal transmission, it is necessary to follow stricter security measures than when using a wired LAN.

When using Wi-Fi, remember about the following aspects.

Monitoring of transmission

Third parties with malicious intent may monitor transmissions via Wi-Fi and attempt to obtain the data being sent.

• Unauthorized access to the network

Third parties with malicious intent may illegally use the device if they manage to intercept the information contained in the QR code.

If you need to change the network name, it is recommended to use the SELPHY Photo Layout app on your smartphone.

Disposal, maintenance, or transfer of the device

Before transferring, disposing of, or sending the device for repair, perform the initialization procedure described below.

Turn on the power. → Press and hold the power button. After 1 second, the indicator will start blinking. → Continue holding the power button. → When the indicator starts blinking rapidly, release the power button.

It is recommended to use the original Canon power adapter.

This product is designed for use with genuine Canon ink tanks.

Canon shall not be liable for any damage or loss caused by the use of ink tanks from other manufacturers (such as refilled or remanufactured ink tanks). Please note that the warranty does not cover malfunctions caused by the use of ink tanks from other manufacturers, although you may contact the service center.
