Uninstall all other modems that are installed on your computer. For instructions, refer to the documentation for your previous modem.
2. Unplug all telephone and power cords connected to your previous modems.
3. Shut down your computer.
Step Two: Install the hardware
1. Find the serial port on the back of your computer by looking for the label,
COM, MODEM, RS-232, |O|O|, or SERIAL. Do not use the AUX, GAME, LPT, or PARALLEL port. If your computer has only a 25-pin serial port, you need to purchase a DB25/ DB25 serial cable. The serial modem cable provided with the 56K Serial Controller Faxmodem is intended for use with a 9-pin serial port on your computer.
2. Use a serial modem cable to connect the serial port on the modem to a serial
port on your computer.
English C a u t i o n : Use an analogue phone line only. The modem will be damaged if you connect it to a digital phone line. Most office phones are wired through digital lines. If you do not know whether your phone line is analogue or digital, consult your telephone service provider or building facilities department.
3. Use the provided telephone cord to connect the phone jack on the modem

N o te : If the power LED does not light, the modem may not be turned on. Make sure that the power supply is connected between the modem and the electrical outlet.
6. Turn your computer on.
Step Three: Install the drivers Windows Vista You must be logged in as an administrator in order to install this modem. When you turn your computer on, Windows automatically detects the modem.
1. Insert the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
2. If the CD does not start automatically, click Windows Start > Computer
and double-click the CD-ROM drive.
3. If the Auto Play window appears, click run autorun.exe.
4. If prompted, enter the password of an administrative user and press ENTER.
5. If prompted by the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM, select your preferred
language and accept the End User License Agreement.
6. Click Install Modem and follow the on-screen instructions to install the
driver for the modem.
Windows XP You must be logged in as an administrator in order to install this modem. When you turn your computer on, the Found New Hardware Wizard starts.
1. If the Found New Hardware Wizard prompts you to search online, select
No, Not this time and follow the on-screen instructions to install the generic driver.
2. When the Found New Hardware Wizard is finished, insert the USRobotics
Installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
3. If the CD does not start automatically, click Windows Start > My Computer
and double-click the CD-ROM drive.
4. If prompted, select your preferred language and accept the End User License
5. Click Install Modem and follow the on-screen instructions to install the
driver for the modem.
6. If you see a prompt regarding Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.**
7. Click Finish to complete the installation.

English Additional software (optional) For your convenience, The USRobotics Installation CD-ROM provides the following optional software that complements your modem: y USR MoH enables the V.92 feature “Modem On Hold” which suspends your Internet connection when the modem detects an inbound telephone call.*** y Phonetools software lets you send and receive faxes and is included as an optional piece of software for your convenience. To install any of these programs:
1. Eject the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM and re-insert it into the CDROM drive.
If the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM does not start automatically: A. Click Windows Start > Run. B. In the Run dialogue box, type D:\setup.exe where D is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive.
2. On the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM, select Software.
3. Select the software that you want to install.
4. Click Install and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Tr oubleshooting General If you have any trouble with the modem, first perform the following steps:
1. Verify that all connectors and power cables are properly connected to the
modem and the back of your computer.
2. Verify that the modem is switched on and the CD or PWR LED is on.
3. Verify that the modem is connected to a serial port on the back of your computer. Do not use the AUX, GAME, LPT, or PARALLEL port.
4. Shut down and restart your computer.
If you still have trouble with the modem, follow these steps to verify whether it was installed correctly: Windows Vista:
1. Click Windows Start > Control Panel.
2. Click Hardware and Sound.
3. Click Phone and Modem Options.

Solution 1: Your communication software may not function properly if any of the following are true: y More than one version of the software is installed on your computer. y You are using an old version of the software. y More than one communication software package is installed on your computer. USRobotics highly recommends using the communication software provided with the modem on the USRobotics Installation CD-ROM. So l u t i o n 2 : Your software’s COM port settings may be incorrect. In the setup section of your software, ensure that the software’s port settings match those for the modem. For instructions on adjusting the port settings in your software, refer to your communication software’s documentation. Solution 3: Make sure that your Windows Dial-Up Networking connection is using the correct modem. Windows Vista:
1. Click Windows Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage network connections.

1. Double-click My Computer.
2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
3. Right-click the connection you are trying to use, and select Properties.
4. Make sure that your new modem is selected.
My modem doesn’t dial out or doesn’t answer incoming calls. Solution 1: You may have a bad telephone cord. Try another telephone cord. Solution 2: You may have plugged the modem’s phone cord into a digital line. Contact the department responsible for your phone system if you are unsure whether your phone line is analogue or digital. Solution 3: If your phone system requires an access code to access an outside line, be sure to include the code in the number that you are dialling. Solution 4: If your voice mail alters your dial tone when messages are waiting, restore the normal dial tone by retrieving your messages before using the modem to dial out. My modem sounds as if it is connecting to another modem, but the connection fails. You may have a poor connection. Try placing the call again. My modem isn’t achieving a 56K Internet connection. Solution 1: Contact your ISP to verify that the number you are dialling supports V.90/V.92 speeds. Solution 2: Contact your telephone company to verify that the telephone line for your modem supports V.90/V.92 speeds. Solution 3: Line interference or the routing of the telephone call to your ISP may be causing a slower connection speed. Try placing the call again. Solution 4: Verify that the modem is connecting to a V.90/V.92 server. A pair of 56K modems will not connect to each other at 56K speeds.
