household use only

BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

Wash the bowl, lid, and basket in warm soapy water, rinse and dry

HOW IT WORKS

Basically, you put food and water into the bowl and leave it to boil dry. The cooker detects the boil-dry condition and switches to "keep warm" mode.

COOKING TIMES

  • There are two methods of regulating cooking times:

1) Use exactly the right amount of water, and leave the cooker to switch to warm automatically – this is the method used to cook rice.
2) Use plenty of water, watch the cooking process, and move the switch up manually when the food is cooked. This is the easiest way to steam "unknowns", unknown quantities, unknown vegetables, unknown sizes.

3 When you use method 2, keep notes. Next time, you can use just the right amount of water, and leave the cooker to do the job on its own (method 1).

OVERCOOKING

4 Don't worry too much about overcooking – steaming is a relatively gentle cooking method and a few minutes extra generally won't matter.
5 Don't overcook fish - it'll chew like rubber and taste like cardboard.

PREPARATION

6 Sit the appliance on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface, near a power socket.
7 Don't use the appliance near or below curtains, shelves, cupboards, or anything else likely to be damaged by the escaping steam.
8 Route the cable so it doesn't overhang, and can't be tripped over or caught.
9 Have oven gloves (or a cloth) to hand, and a heat-resistant mat or dinner plate to put the bowl on after cooking.

10 Put the bowl inside the cooker.

WASHING RICE

11 Some people say you shouldn't wash rice, as it washes away nutrients.
12 Some people say you should wash rice, as this removes excess starch, rice powder, and any loose bran.
13 If you're making rice balls or sushi, where you want the rice to stick together, then it makes sense not to wash it.
14 If you want loose rice with easily separated grains, then washing may help.

FILLING

15 Fill the bowl with the amount of rice required.
16 Add the required amount of water – generally, use 1 cup of water for each cup of rice.
17 Don't fill above the top of the fill mark.

COOKING

18 Give the bowl quarter of a turn each way, to ensure the bottom of the bowl makes good contact with the element.
19 Put the lid on the bowl.
20 Put the plug into the power socket. The light will glow.
21 Move the control to . The light will go off.
22 When the rice is cooked, the control will move to , the light will go off, and the light will glow.
23 Let the rice rest for about 10 minutes, then unplug the cooker.
24 Put on the oven gloves.
25 Steam and hot air will escape when you lift the lid. Tilt it slightly to direct the steam away from you.
26 Lift out the bowl and set it down on a heat-resistant mat or dinner plate.
27 Use the spatula to turn and mix the rice, to let all the steam escape.
28 Sometimes the layer of rice in contact with the bowl will form a crust.
29 Some people regard the crust as a treat.
30 If you don't want it you can remove it with the spatula, after you've served the rice.

ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS

31 If you add any additional ingredients (raisins, fruit, nuts, etc.), you should reduce the amount of rice to compensate for the amount of water they'll absorb.
32 Raisins and dried fruit will absorb as much water as rice, so put them into the measuring cup along with the rice.
33 Nuts won't generally absorb much water, so you can normally add them after you've measured the rice.

USING THE COOKER AS A STEAMER

34 Add the required amount of water – Use method 1 or 2 above.
35 Put the basket on top of the bowl and put the food into the basket.
36 For uniform cooking, cut all pieces of food to roughly the same size.
37 For peas, or anything that'll break up or drop into the water, make a parcel with aluminium foil.
38 Take care when removing the parcel – wear oven gloves and use plastic tongs/spoons.
39 Put the lid on top of the basket.
40 Operate the cooker the same way you would when cooking rice.
41 Follow the steaming times.
42 Don't leave food in the cooker after steaming - it'll go soggy.

TAKE NOTES

43 Note the type and quantity of food and the amount of water. Next time, adjust the amount of water and let the cooker look after the timing.

PLUNGER

44 The plunger will prevent the element working unless the bowl is in place.

FINISHED?

45 Unplug the appliance.

46 Don't move the rice cooker with the full bowl inside it. It will be heavy, and the cable may catch on something as you move.
47 Remove the bowl from the rice cooker before emptying it. If you try to remove food from the bowl while it's in the rice cooker, you may spill the contents into the rice cooker. This will damage it.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

48 Unplug the appliance and let it cool down before cleaning or storing away.

Remove the plug from the power socket, then remove the connector from the power inlet on the appliance.
49 Wash the lid, bowl, and rack in warm, soapy water, rinse and dry.
50 Wipe all surfaces with a clean damp cloth.
51 Don't put any part of the appliance in a dishwasher.

53 Cook meat, poultry, and derivatives (mince, burgers, etc.) till the juices run clear. Cook fish till the flesh is opaque throughout.
54 You should cook leaf vegetables as little as possible, to keep them green and crisp. Plunging them into iced water will stop the cooking process.
