Frequently Asked Questions - COOLER III PW COMPACT LINCOLN ELECTRIC

What type of coolant should I use?
Use exclusively FREEZCOOL coolant (ref. W000010167). Never use water, automotive antifreeze, or pre-conditioned liquid for welders, as they can damage components.
How to install the cooler on a cart?
Place the cooler on the cart and secure the front bracket using the provided fasteners. Make sure the unit is stable and level.
What is the minimum required liquid capacity?
The minimum required capacity is 3.7 liters. Never start the cooler with less liquid, as this may damage the pump.
What to do if the cooler does not work?
Check the power cord, circuit breaker, fuse condition, and that the tank is not empty. Consult the troubleshooting guide in the manual for more causes.
How to prime the pump at first start-up?
Start the cooler, then press the coupler valve to let air out until liquid flows. Then release the valve.
What is the maximum operating temperature?
The maximum ambient temperature is 40 °C. Beyond that, cooling performance will be reduced.
How to maintain the cooler?
Check the liquid level and hose condition daily. Once a year, clean the interior and heat exchanger with dry air. Drain and replace the liquid if necessary.
Can I use the cooler without a water-cooled torch?
If you use an air torch, the cooler must be turned off manually via the power source menu, or install the supplied bypass hose to avoid damaging the pump.
What to do in case of internal water leak?
Check the hose clamps and condition of the hoses. If a clamp is loose, tighten it. If a hose is punctured, replace it. Contact an authorized service center if necessary.
How to transport the cooler?
Drain the coolant tank to avoid leaks and frost damage. Refer to the safety instructions in the manual.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

11/04

This machine has been designed in accordance with all relevant directives and standards. However, it may still generate electromagnetic disturbances that can affect other systems like telecommunications (telephone, radio, and television) or other safety systems. These disturbances can cause safety problems in the affected systems. Read and understand this section to eliminate or reduce the amount of electromagnetic disturbance generated by this machine.

Consider the following guidelines to reduce electromagnetic emissions from the machine.

  • Connect the machine to the input supply according to this manual. If disturbances occur if may be necessary to take additional precautions such as filtering the input supply.
  • The output cables should be kept as short as possible and should be positioned together. If possible connect the work piece to ground in order to reduce the electromagnetic emissions. The operator must check that connecting the work piece to ground does not cause problems or unsafe operating conditions for personnel and equipment.
  • Shielding of cables in the work area can reduce electromagnetic emissions. This may be necessary for special applications.

WARNING

The Class A equipment is not intended for use in residential locations where the electrical power is provided by the public low-voltage supply system. There may be potential difficulties in ensuring electromagnetic compatibility in those locations, due to conducted as well as radiated disturbances.

LOCATION

This machine will operate in harsh environments. However, it is important that simple preventative measures are followed to assure long life and reliable operation.

  • Do not place or operate this machine on a surface with an incline greater than 10^ from horizontal.
  • Do not use this machine for pipe thawing.
  • This machine must be located where there is free circulation of clean air without restrictions for air movement to and from the air vents. Do not cover the machine with paper, cloth or rags when switched on.
  • Dirt and dust that can be drawn into the machine should be kept to a minimum.

This machine has a protection rating of IP23. Keep it dry when possible and do not place it on wet ground or in puddles.

- Locate the machine away from radio controlled machinery. Normal operation may adversely affect the operation of nearby radio controlled machinery, which may result in injury or equipment damage. Read the section on electromagnetic compatibility in this manual.

Do not operate in areas with an ambient temperature higher than 40^ C. The ambient air temperature influences the parameters of cooling. If the ambient temperature is higher, the cooling system will be less effective

LINCOLN ELECTRIC COOLER III PW COMPACT - LOCATION - 1

WARNING

Avoid placing the cooler near areas of extreme heat.

This cooler is designed for use with water-cooled torches. This one must be used with a welding power source that lists this cooler as an approved accessory.

Input Supply Connection

This cooler must be supplied by a welding power source in accordance with installation procedure that can be done only by qualified electrician. Installation must be made in accordance with the appropriate National Electrical Code and local regulations.

LINCOLN ELECTRIC COOLER III PW COMPACT - Input Supply Connection - 1

WARNING

Do not run cooler if the reservoir was not filled and the torch's/gun's hoses are disconnected from the cooling unit. Not observing this warning may cause internal damage to the cooler unit. If you use an "air" torch, the cooler must be switched off manually with the setup menu of the power source, otherwise, if it is not possible, you will have to put a bypass hose delivered with the unit. Take care also about the reservoir level and the good circulation of the coolant because there is not a flow sensor into the cooler.

WARNING

Never use the “COOLER III PW COMPACT” with an open cooling circuit (there is not a flow sensor) as there is a risk of damage to the pump (if necessary use the bypass hose delivered, or the cooler should be turned off by the setup menu of the power source)

- Start up the COOLER III PW (for more details please refer to the manual of the generator). After approximately 1 minute of running, stop and verify that the cooling level is correct.

Striking procedure of the pump

At the first start up or after maintenance or prior to a long period of none use, it maybe necessary to prime the pump of the Cooler, following this procedure:

  • Start up the "COOLER III PW COMPACT"
  • Push on the valve closing of the coupler to allow the passage of the air taking care to protect the output against the flow of the liquid.
  • As soon as the cooling liquid runs away by the coupler, release the valve. The cooler is operational.

Transport

To avoid freeze damage and water leakage during transport, the coolant must be removed from the cooler's reservoir.
