Operating principle
The JBL CristalProfi Internal Filters are submerged completely in water to clean the aquarium water. A maintenance-free pump built into the filter head ensures permanent water circulation. Before being pumped back into the aquarium, the aquarium water flows into one or more filter material containers where it is channelled through the filter material and is cleaned.
Special features
Unobtrusive
With its elegantly designed corner shape, the CristalProfi Internal filters fit unobtrusively in any aquariums. They are almost silent when running.
- Safe
The filter cartridges fit perfectly into the casing and have an extremely large surface, ensuring a high filter volume and reliable water cleaning. TÜV/GS tested, completely submersible IPX8
- Easy to use
Simple to install thanks to a novel suction pad system consisting of two large suction cups which secure the filter on the aquarium glass almost without a gap. The suction cups can be released effortlessly by pressing the two
buttons on the front of the pump.
- An innovative valve system, patent applied for (EP 1736049), empties the filter when it is removed from the aquarium, without the dirty water flowing back into the aquarium.
Thanks to the modular construction, small appliances can "grow" when a larger aquarium is purchased.
A wide range of filter materials suitable for use with the CristalProfi Internal Filter provides solutions for individual problems.
- Fully fitted and ready to be installed
All models are complete with filter materials for mechanical and biological water cleaning and ready to be installed. Swivel water outlet can be turned 90°. Water flow can be individually selected by means of the flow regulator, wide jet pipe and spray bar.
Suitable for use in any aqua-terrarium (turtle tank), freshwater or marine aquarium.

Installation
1 Unpacking and preparation
Carefully remove the filter and the separate accessories from the packaging and check that nothing is missing. In the event that anything is missing or damaged, please contact your specialist retailer.
Insert the enclosed large suction cups into the side openings of the pump head by turning and pressing lightly. Make sure the central pin fits into the suction cup before locking in place. Pull the pump head off the filter module for model i60 and separate the filter modules for models i80, i100 and i200 in the same manner. Remove the foam cartridges without the central collection pipe from the modules. Rinse the cartridges under lukewarm tap water. Push the foam cartridge(s) back onto the collecting pipe in the respective module.
Before you fit the pump head, biologically activate the filter material of the filter with JBL FilterStart Cleansing Bacteria (available at your specialist pet shop), as follows:
Drip 50 drops of JBL Filterstart per foam cartridge directly onto the cartridge.
Re-connect the module(s) and the pump head. Check that all connections have fastened correctly.
Note: The filter modules can be fitted in any order in models i80, i100 and i200. Care should be taken that the bottom plate with valve must always be attached to the bottom module.
2 Putting the filter in position
Clean the places on the aquarium glass where the two large suction cups of the filter will be placed thoroughly. Remove other foreign bodies e.g. small snails etc. from the rest of the aquarium glass where the filter will be placed. Now press the filter with the two large suction cups onto the glass in the designated corner of the tank. Make sure that the discharge pipe is approx. 2 cm below the water level. To remove the filter, simply press the two buttons (PUSH) on the front side of the pump head simultaneously with your thumbs and pointers and remove the filter from the aquarium glass. Two small spacers on the bottom plate of the filter maintain a small distance from the glass panes of the aquarium to prevent noise transmission by resonance.
Note: In aqua-terrariums with low water levels, the filter can be simply be placed on one of the flat sides on the bottom and secured laterally with a suction cup as described in the above.
3 Starting up the filter
Turn the swivel water outlet in the direction required and install the wide jet pipe, diffuser or spray bar as wished. Now plug the filter to the mains power supply.
Tip: We advise against using the spray bar in aquariums containing plants that are supplied with additional carbon dioxide (e.g. JBL ProFlora), as too much CO_2 , the vital plant nutrient, is expelled from the water. The best results are achieved using the wide jet pipe with the opening just below the surface of the water to produce a moderate surface water flow.
Note: Should you replace an existing aquarium filter with JBL CristalProfi Internal Filter, we recommend running both filters, the new and the old, parallel in the same aquarium for the first 2 weeks before dismantling the "old" filter. This ensures that the new filter has a sufficiently large colony of cleansing bacteria and avoids harmful nitrites occurring in the transitional phase.
4 Regulating the water flow
The water flow can be regulated as required using the water flow regulator. To do this, hold the swivel water outlet and turn the flow regulator to the right or left until the required flow rate is produced. The flow regulator is designed so that a minimum flow rate of approx. 150 or 300 l/h (depending on the model) is maintained. In order to avoid damage to the pump, this rate cannot be reduced.
Maintenance and care
All JBL CristalProfi internal filters are fully equipped with foam cartridges to provide clean and healthy aquarium water for "normal" operation. The filters provide ideal conditions for the development of colonies of cleansing bacteria which play an essential role in the breakdown of pollutants. The selection of pore size ensures that these bacteria can efficiently carry out their task undisturbed for as long as possible.
Note: To solve problems (undesirable algae growth etc.), we offer a range of special filter materials designed for use with the JBL CristalProfi Internal Filters in a specially constructed filter basket. (Section D.)
Caution: Regular maintenance and cleaning of the filters is vital to prevent a reduction in the pump capacity.
⑤ Cleaning or replacement of the filter material
Unplug the filter before any work is carried out on it!
To remove the filter, simply press the two buttons (PUSH) on the front side of the pump head simultaneously with your thumbs and pointers and remove the filter from the aquarium glass. Lift the complete filter vertically out of the aquarium and wait until all the water has drained from the bottom valve.
Remove the foam cartridge(s) as described in part (1) and wash thoroughly under running water. Rule of thumb: Stop washing the cartridge(s) when the water that comes out when the cartridge is squeezed is only slightly brownish. When using several foam cartridges to filter, it is advisable to stagger the times when the cartridges are washed so that there is always one unwashed cartridge.
6 Function and replacement intervals of the foam cartridges
Foam cartridge (JBL UniBloc):
Medium-pored foam cartridge for effective biological filtering with ideal conditions for colonisation by cleansing bacteria. The grooved shape (T profile) allows for long use with little reduction in flow. Careful cleaning is required approximately every 1 - 2 months. Replace the old foam cartridge after cleaning 3 to 5 times depending on the condition. For filters with several cartridges, only clean or replace the foam cartridges at alternate intervals.
⑦ Cleaning the impeller and casing
Remove the cover from the impeller casing by pulling gently vertically upwards.
Remove the impeller with the axle and bearing sleeves from the casing.
NOTE: the impeller is held in the casing by magnetic force. Take appropriate care when removing the impeller, particularly to avoid any injury to fingers.
Clean the impeller casing, impeller and cover with a suitable cleaning brush, then rinse in clean water. Limescale can be easily removed by soaking in JBL BioClean A (available at your specialist pet shop).
Place the impeller with axle and bearing sleeves back in the casing, making sure the bearing sleeves that hold the axle fit properly and are complete. Push the impeller cover back on all the way.
Clean the water outlet pipe and any accessories that were attached, such as the spray bar and wide jet pipe, with an appropriate cleaning brush.
8 Re-starting the filter
Place the foam cartridges back in the filter module and fit the filter module and pump head back together until the
connections clip properly into place (1). Return the filter to its original place in the aquarium and install any accessories as previously.
Plug the filter to the power supply.
Regulate the flow to the desired rate.
