It contains important in- formation on safety, use and disposal. Before using the device, you should familiarise your- self with all operating and safety instructions. Use the device only as described and for the stated elds of application. Store the instruc- tion manual carefully and ensure that all doc- uments are handed over in the event that the device is passed on to another user. Proper use This device is intended only for cutting lawns and grassed areas in residential applications. This device is not suitable for27 MTGB commercial use. The warranty is void in the case of commercial use. Any other use that is not expressly permit- ted in this instruction manual may result in damage to the device and pose a serious hazard to the user. The device is intended for use by adults. Children and people who are not familiar with this instruction manual must not use the device. The operator or user is responsible for any accidents or personal injury and/or material damage to third parties or their property. The device is equipped with a robust plas- tic housing, a grass collection box and a foldable grip handle. Please refer to the descriptions below for information on how the operating elements work. Levels of noise and vibration were deter- mined according to the standards and reg- ulations in the declaration of conformity. The vibration emission value has been measured according to a standardised test- ing method and may be used for compari- son with another device. The indicated vibration emission value may also be used for an introductory assess- ment of the exposure.

Warning: The vibration emission

value whilst actually using the de- vice may vary from the given values regardless of the type and way in which the device is used. Try to keep the exposure to vibra- tions as low as possible. Examples of measures to reduce vibration exposure are the wearing of gloves when using the tool and limiting the working hours. All parts of the op- erating cycle have to be considered while doing so (for example, times when the power tool is switched off29 MTGB and times when it is switched on but running without any load). • In case of uncertainties, consult some- one for instruction concerning the use of the device and prohibited opera- tions.

• Pay attention, be aware of what you are doing and take the utmost care when working. Do not use the device if you are tired or ill or you are under the infl uence of drugs, alcohol or other medication. A moment of inattention whilst using the device can result in serious injuries.

• This device is not intended for use by people with restricted physical, sensory or mental capabilities; those who do not have suf cient experience in using the device or knowledge of the device must not use it unless they are super- vised by an individual responsible for their safety, or receive instructions from this person on how to use the device.

• Children must be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the device.

• Never allow children or other people who are unfamiliar with the instruction manual to use the device. Local regula- tions may specify the minimum age of the user.

• Never mow if there are people, particu- larly children or animals, nearby. Dis- tractions can cause you to lose control of the device.31 MTGB

• Remember that the user is responsible for accidents involving other people or their property.

• Observe noise protection rules and other local regulations. Preparations:

• Always wear slip-resistant shoes and long trousers when mowing. Do not mow barefoot or in light sandals. Loose clothing, jewellery or long hair may get caught in moving parts. Wearing suita- ble clothing reduces the risk of injuries.

• Check the terrain on which the device will be used and remove all objects (e.g. stones, sticks, wires, toys) which may be drawn into the device and ejected.

• Warning: Petrol is highly fl ammable. Fire or explosions can lead to severe burns: - Store petrol only in the specially pro- vided containers; - Refuel only in open areas and never smoke while refuelling the device; - Petrol has to be added before start- ing the engine. The fuel tank cap must not be opened and petrol must not be added while the engine is running or the device is still hot. - If there was an accidental petrol spill, do not attempt to start the engine. Instead, remove the device from the petrol contaminated sur- face. Do not try to ignite the engine until all petrol vapours have evapo- rated; - If the fuel tank or other tank caps are damaged, replace them for safety reasons.

• Replace defective muffl ers.

• Before use, always perform a visual inspection to check whether the cutting tools, fastening bolts and the entire cutting unit are worn out or damaged. Worn or damaged tools and bolts must only be replaced as a set to prevent imbalance.

• Take care when using devices with several cutting tools as the movement of one blade can lead to rotation of the other blades.

• Use replacement and accessory parts supplied or recommended by the manufacturer only. Using externally produced parts can cause injury, and void any warranty claims. Operation:

• Never let the internal combustion engine run in a con ned space, as dangerous carbon monoxide can ac- cumulate.

• Use the machine only in daylight or with good arti cial lighting. Working in areas without lighting can result in accidents.

• Do not work with the device if there is a risk of lightning strike. Danger of electric shock.

• Caution! The exhaust gases from the lawnmower contain toxic substances.

• Avoid operating the machine in poor weather conditions, especially when there is a lightning hazard.

• If possible, do not use the device on wet grass.

• Always ensure secure positioning, par- ticularly on hillsides, land lls, ditches or dykes. This will help you to have bet- ter control of the device in unexpected situations. - Always move crosswise across slopes, never up or down. - Take special care when changing the direction of travel on slopes. - Do not mow on overly steep slopes (max. 10°).32 MTGB

• Only operate the device at walking speed.

• Take special care when turning the de- vice around or pulling it towards you.

• Stop the cutting tool when the device has to be tipped for transport over other areas than grass and when the device is moved from and to the area to be mowed.

• Never use the device with damaged pro- tective equipment or protective grating or without installed protective equipment, e.g. impact protection and/or grass col- lection equipment. This ensures the safety of the device is not adversely affected.

• Do not change the controller settings of the motor and do not overturn it. This could damage the device.

• Turn on the device with care in accord- ance with the manufacturer instructions. Ensure your feet are at a suf cient dis- tance from the cutting tool. There is a risk of injury.

• When starting or turning the engine on, the device must not be tilted, unless it is required to lift the device in the process. In this event, tilt the device only as far as absolutely necessary and lift it only on the side facing away from the user.

• Do not start the motor when standing in front of the ejector opening.

• Switch the engine on as directed and only if your feet are a safe distance away from the cutting tools.

• Never place your hands or feet on or below rotating parts. Always keep away from the ejector opening. A moment of inattention when using the device can result in serious injuries.

• Never lift or carry the device when the engine is running.

• Shut off the engine, disconnect the spark plug connector, remove the igni- tion key if present, and make sure that all movable parts have stopped moving: - before removing obstructions, or loosening blockages from the ejector opening; - before checking the device, cleaning it or performing maintenance work on it; - when a foreign object has been hit. Check for damages to the device and perform any required repairs before starting and working with the ma- chine again; - if the device starts to vibrate abnor- mally strong, an immediate inspection is required. - when leaving the device; - before refuelling.

• Never leave the device unattended at the workplace.

• Do not work with a damaged or incom- plete device or one which has been converted without the permission of the manufacturer. Using the device for anything other than its intended use can lead to dangerous situations.

• Do not work with the device if there is a risk of lightning strike. Danger of electric shock. The throttle valve must be closed when the motor comes to a stop. If the engine has a petrol shut-off valve, it must be closed after mowing. Maintenance and storage:

• Make sure that all nuts, bolts and screws are properly tightened, and that the device is in safe working order. Many accidents are caused by poorly main- tained appliances.

• Never store the device with fuel in its petrol tank inside a building, where fuel vapours may be coming in contact with re or sparks.

• Give the engine time to cool off before you store the device in an enclosed33 MTGB space. Possible re hazard.

• To avoid risk of re, keep engine, ex- haust and the area around the petrol tank free of grass, leaves or leaking grease (engine oil).

• Check the grass collection unit regu- larly for wear or loss of function.

• Replace worn or damaged parts for safety reasons. Replace defective muf- fl ers.

• If you need to drain the petrol tank, you must do so outside.

• Treat your device with care. Keep the tools sharpened and clean in order to be able to work better and safer. Fol- low the maintenance instructions.

• Do not try to repair the device yourself, unless you have professional training. All work not speci ed in this instruction manual may only be carried out by cus- tomer service centres authorised by us.

• Store the device in a dry place and out of reach of children. Devices can be dangerous if operated by inexperi- enced persons.

• The security systems or devices of the lawnmower must not be manipulated or deactivated. The user should not change or tamper with any sealed engine speed control settings. Initial start-up Caution! Risk of injury due to rotating blade. Only perform work on the device when the engine is switched off and has come to a stop. Before starting the device, you must - Remove all transport safety devices, - mount the grip rod, - Fit the wheels - ll the engine oil, - ll the petrol, - mount the grass collection box if necessary, - set the cutting height if necessary. Mounting the lower bar Make sure that the Bowden cable

19) is not crushed during the

assembly of the grip rod.

1. Unscrew the two Phillips screws (4a)

from each of the lower bars (4).

2. Insert the lower bars (4) into the mount

on the lawn mower housing (12). The lower bar (4) with the pre-assem- bled starter cable guide (21) must be inserted into the right-hand side of the lawn mower housing (12) as viewed in the direction of travel.

3. Fasten the lower bars (4) with one Phillips

screw (4a) each. You can use the screw- driver (25) supplied for this purpose. Mounting the handlebar If necessary, remove the handle nuts (3a) and the screws (3c), together with the washers (3b) and the starter cable guide (21) from the lower bars (4) before assembling the handlebar.

2. Slide a screw (5c) through the holes on

the grip rods on both sides.

3. Slide one washer (3b) on each of the

screws (3c). On the right side of the lawn mower, the starter cable guide (21) must be34 MTGB placed on the screw between the washer (3b) and the handlebar (1) on the screw (3c).

Fitting the starter cable

1. Slowly pull the starter cable by the

starter handle (22) towards the bar.

2. Guide the starter cable into the starter

3. Release the safety bracket (2).

Fitting the wheels First mount the bars as mounting the wheel rst makes access to the Phillips screw (4a) for bar mounting dif cult. The cutting height is set by positioning the wheels. The machine has 3 possible posi- tions: 65 mm - large cutting height

• lower position cutting height (28) 45 mm - medium cutting height

• medium position cutting height (28) 25 mm - low cutting height

• upper position cutting height (28) Attach each of the four wheels (13) with a wheel bolt (13a) over a safety washer (13b) at the desired cutting height position (28). Select the same cutting height position for all four wheels (28)! When assembling the wheels, make sure you use the correct wheel bolt (13a) so that the “L” and “R” mark- ings on the lawnmower housing (12) match the “L” and “R” markings on the bolt head. The wheel bolts (13a) on the left (“L”) of the mower are tightened anticlockwise ↺ to ensure they do not loosen by themselves during operation. Removing/attaching the grass collection box Caution: Do not run the de- vice if the grass collection box or impact protection are not attached properly. Risk of injury! Attaching the grass collection box to the device:

1. Lift the rear impact protection (6).

2. Hold the grass collection box (5) by the

carrying handle (5a).

3. Hang the grass collection box (5) into

the grass collection box attachment (26) on the rear of the device.

4. Remove the impact protection (6); it

keeps the grass collection box (5) in place. Removing the grass collection box:

3. Place the mulch kit (24) upright with the

lower edge on the mower.

4. Push the mulch kit (24) by its lower

edge and then by its upper edge into the ejector opening.

3. Tilt the mulching kit (24) slightly for-

(24) out of the machine rst.

5. Remove the mulch kit (24).

Filling the engine oil Place the device on an even base.

1. Screw off the oil tank cap with dipstick

2. Fill the engine oil in the oil tank. The

engine oil tank holds 0.4 l of oil. Use brand-name oil.

3. Close the oil tank cap (27) again.

Checking the oil level

1. Screw off the oil tank cap with dipstick

3. Screw the oil tank cap with dipstick

(27) back on completely.

4. Unscrew the oil tank cap with

dipstick (27) and read the oil level on the dipstick after pulling it out. The oil level must be in the marked eld between the mini- mum and maximum mark (maxi- mum: 0.4 l engine oil in the oil tank).

5. Wipe away any spilt engine oil.

6. Close the oil tank cap (27) again.

Each time before you mow, check the oil level and top up the engine oil before it reaches the bottom mark. Filling with petrol Warning! Petrol is fl ammable and harmful to health and the environ- ment: - Store petrol in vessels intended for this; - Only refuel in the open air and never while the engine is running or hot; - Carefully open the fuel cap so that overpressure can be relieved; - Do not smoke while refuelling; Avoid skin contact and inhalation of fumes; - Remove spilled petrol; - Keep petrol away from sparks, open fl ames and other ignition sources. - Dispose of any petrol remnants in an environmentally friendly way (see “Dis- posal/environmental protection”). - Do not use any petrol/oil mix- ture. - Use lead-free normal or premi- um-grade petrol; If using organic fuel, do not mix more than 10% ethanol. - Only use clean, fresh petrol. - Do not store petrol for longer than one month, as its quality will deteriorate.

1. Unscrew the tank cap (

2. Add petrol up to the lower edge of the

ller neck (8). Do not ll the petrol tank fully, so that the petrol has space to expand.

3. Wipe petrol residues off the tank cap.

4. Close the tank cap.36

MTGB Operation Some level of noise emission with this equipment is unavoidable. Post- pone noisy work until designated periods when it is permitted. Take rest periods when needed and limit working time to the minimum neces- sary. For your personal protection and the protection of people work- ing nearby a suitable form of hear- ing protection must be worn. Starting/stopping theengine Warning! Petrol is fl amma- ble. Start the engine at least 3 m away from where you refuelled. Possible re haz- ard. Place the device on a solid, even base, avoiding high grass if possi- ble. Make sure that the cutting tool does not touch either other objects or the ground. For your safety: Stand behind the device when starting it. Regularly check the petrol and oil levels (see “Checking the oil level”) and top up promptly. Cold start:

1. Press the petrol pump (11)

2. Pull the safety bracket (2) to-

wards the handlebar (1) and hold it.

3. Pull the starter handle (22).

4. If the motor starts, slowly release the

starter handle into the starter cable guide (21). For a warm start it is not neces- sary to press the primer (11). If the primer is pressed too often, too much petrol will enter the carburettor and the motor is dif cult to start. Stopping the engine:

• Release the safety bracket (2). The engine switches off and the blade is braked. Blade stopping device: Regularly examine the blade stopping device:

• If possible, mow dry grass to go gentle on the sod.

• Adjust the cutting height so that the de- vice is not overloaded.

• Move the device at walking speed and in lines as straight as possible. For a fl awless mowing result, the lines should always overlap by a few centimetres.

• Do not move backwards.

• Always move across the slope when working on hills.37 MTGB

• If the blades come into contact with a foreign object, turn the engine off im- mediately. Wait until the blade comes to a stop and check the device for damage. Only continue working if the device is undamaged.

• Switch off the device during longer breaks or when transporting it and wait until the blade has stopped moving.

• Clean the device after each use, as described in the section “Cleaning/ storage“. Difference between moving and mulching lawns When using the mulch kit (24), the grass clippings are not captured in a collection box but are instead shredded and spread across the lawn. The nutrients contained in the clippings are thus left to be broken down by soil organisms and form a nutri- ent cycle. Mulched lawns therefore need to be fertilised much less frequently. As a basic rule, the lawn has to be mowed relatively often so that only small amounts of mulch remain on the lawn. It is therefore best to mulch the lawn at least once a week and to adjust the mower so that only about 40% of the total height of the lawn is left as mulch. If the mulch remains visible on the lawn (for example when cutting the lawn for the rst time of the year or during strong growth), the grass collection box (5) should be used. Setting the cutting height The device has 3 positions for setting the cutting height: 65 mm - large cutting height 45 mm - medium cutting height 25 mm - low cutting height

1. Loosen the wheel bolt (13a).

2. Remove the wheel (13). Make sure not

to lose the safety washer (13b).

3. Fix the wheel (13) in the desired cutting

height position (28) in the reverse or- der. There are three possible positions.

4. Repeat steps 1 - 3 with the other

wheels. The wheel bolts (13a) on the left (“L”) of the mower are tightened an- ticlockwise ↺ to ensure they do not loosen by themselves during opera- tion. The correct cutting height is between 30and 45mm for an ornamental lawn and about 40 - 65 mm for a utility lawn. A high cutting height should be selected for the rst mowing of the season. Emptying the grass collection box

1. Switch off the engine and wait for the

blade to come to a stop.

grab it at the carrying handle (5a) and at the bottom (see also “Disposal/envi- ronmental protection”).

5. Mount the grass collection box again.

Cleaning and Servicing Have any service and main- tenance work on the device38 MTGB that is not described in this instruction manual performed by a professional. Only use original spare parts. Accident hazard! Maintenance and cleaning work must always be carried out with the engine switched off and the spark plug connec- tor removed. Risk of injury! Allow the device to cool off before performing any main- tenance or cleaning. Engine elements are hot. There is a danger of burns! Wear gloves when handling the blade. Cleaning and general maintenance work Cleaning and maintenance work on the underside of the appliance: Place an underlay under the petrol lawnmower.

1. Fold the upper handlebar (1) up

2. Tilt the device back so that the spark

plug faces upwards. Make sure that a second person holds the device because there is a danger of tipping backwards. Do not tilt the device to the side or forwards. Operating fl uids could escape and the engine could be damaged.

• Always keep the device clean. Use a brush or cloth for cleaning, but do not use any aggressive cleaning agents or solvents. Do not use any water to clean the engine, it could contaminate the fuel system.

• After mowing, remove any plant re- mains using a piece of wood or plastic. Clean the engine cover with ventilation holes ( nger protection) in particular.

• Check the device before each use for obvious defects such as loose, worn or damaged parts. Ensure that all nuts, bolts and screws are rmly in place.

• Check the covers and protective de- vices ( 2, 7, 15) for damage and correct t. Replace these if necessary. Replacing the air lter Never run the device without an air lter. Dust and dirt may otherwise enter the engine and cause dam- age. Removing the air lter

1. Disconnect the spark plug connector

2. Open the air lter box (9) by turn-

ing the cover anti-clockwise and then removing it upwards (Bayonet locking device).

3. Remove the air lter (10).

4. Clean the air lter (10) in a soap solution.

5. Allow the air lter (10) to dry. Put a

few drops of fresh engine oil into the air lter.

6. Replace the faulty air lter (10) with a

new air lter (10) see „Spare parts/Ac- cessories“).39 MTGB Inserting the air lter

1. Insert the air lter (10) into the air lter

2. Close the air lter box (9) again by

placing the cover back on and turning it clockwise. Spark plug maintenance Worn spark plugs, or a spark plug gap that is too large, will lead to a reduction in engine power.

1. Remove the spark plug connector (16) by

pulling and turning the spark plug (17).

Replacing blades Improper installation can cause severe injury. Never tilt the lawnmower to the side or forwards when the petrol or oil tank is lled! This could damage the en- gine, voiding the warranty. Check the blade for wear and damage. If dull or damaged, replace the blade! Always have a specialist workshop sharpen a dull blade, as they can perform imbalance testing. Wear gloves when handling the blade.40 MTGB Once you have loosened the blade screw (30), you have to replace the clamping disk (32). The tightening torque of the blade is 45 Nm.

Adjusting the carburettor The carburettor has been precon gured for ideal performance at the factory. If any readjustments are necessary (see “Trouble- shooting”), have the adjustments made by a specialist workshop.
