How to adjust the temperature of my SHARP SJ-340N refrigerator?

Use the two controls: FREEZER TEMP. CONTROL for the freezer and REFRIGERATOR TEMP. CONTROL for the refrigerator compartment. Set to MAX for maximum cooling. In summer (ambient temperature >35°C), turn FREEZER TEMP. CONTROL towards MIN to prevent the refrigerator from being too warm. In winter (<10°C), turn towards MIN if food freezes in the refrigerator.

What does the temperature indicator in the refrigerator mean?

The temperature indicator is located in the coldest zone. BLUE indicates correct temperature, WHITE means the temperature is too high. If the indicator turns white, increase the refrigerator setting and check again after 6 hours.

How to clean the interior of the refrigerator?

Remove the shelves and door bins, wash them with lukewarm soapy water, rinse and dry. Clean the interior with a cloth soaked in lukewarm soapy water, then rinse with clean water. Do not use cleaning powder, benzene or hot water to avoid damaging plastic parts.

Why is my refrigerator making noise?

The following noises are normal: a loud noise from the compressor at startup that decreases, a noise once a day after automatic defrost, a liquid noise (gurgling) due to refrigerant circulation, and cracking sounds when internal walls contract/expand.

How to change the refrigerator light bulb?

The bulb must be replaced only by a SHARP authorized service technician. Do not attempt to change it yourself. Contact SHARP after-sales service.

What to do in case of gas (refrigerant) leak?

Do not touch the wall outlet and do not expose the appliance to open flames. Open windows to ventilate the room, then contact a SHARP authorized service agent. The refrigerant used is isobutane (R600a), which is flammable.

Can I freeze glass bottles in the freezer?

No, do not put bottles in the freezer compartment as the cold can cause them to burst. Use containers suitable for freezing.

How to make ice cubes?

Fill the ice cube trays without overfilling, place them in the freezer. Once the cubes are ready, turn the handle clockwise to empty them into the ice cube tray. Do not make ice cubes with the tray itself and do not pour oil into it.

Where is the coldest zone of the refrigerator?

The coldest zone is indicated by a symbol in the refrigerator compartment. Door bins at the same height are not part of this zone. The temperature indicator is located there to check the temperature.

How to correctly install the refrigerator?

Install it away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Leave sufficient ventilation space around (see illustration in the manual). Use the adjustable front foot to level it. Ensure the plug is accessible and the cord is not trapped.

Thank you very much for buying this SHARP product. Before using your SHARP refrigerator, please read this operation manual to ensure that you gain the maximum benefit from it.

All persons using the cabinet must be thoroughly familiar with its operation and safety features. Keep this operation manual with the refrigerator if you move or if the cabinet changes owners so that whoever uses it can read about the various features and safety rules.

WARNING

1. This refrigerator contains flammable refrigerant (R600a: isobutane) and insulation blowing gas (cyclopentane). Observe the following rules to prevent ignition and explosion.
2. The refrigeration system behind and inside the refrigerator contains refrigerant. Do not allow any sharp objects to come into contact with the refrigeration system.
3. Do not use mechanical devices or other means to accelerate the defrosting process. (This refrigerator has adopted automatic defrosting system.)
4. Do not use electric appliances inside the refrigerator.
5. Use only the specified lamp for the refrigerator compartment.
6. Do not block the openings on the circumference of the refrigerator.
7. If the refrigeration system should get punctured, do not touch the wall outlet and do not use open flames. Open the window and air out the room. Then ask a service agent approved by SHARP for servicing.
8. This refrigerator should be disposed appropriately. Take the refrigerator to a recycling plant for flammable refrigerant and insulation blowing gases.
9. This refrigerator is airtight. TO PREVENT FATAL ACCIDENTS TO CHILDREN, please completely remove the door prior to discarding the refrigerator.
10. Highly volatile and inflammable materials such as ether, petrol, propane gas, adhesive agents and pure alcohol etc. are liable to explode. Do not store these materials in the refrigerator.

CAUTION

1. Do not touch the compressor unit or its peripheral parts, as they become extremely hot during operation and the metal edges may cause injury.
2. If the power supply is accidentally disconnected, please wait for at least 5 minutes before re-connecting the power, as back pressure in the compressor may trip the overload relay.
3. Do not touch foods or metal containers in the freezer compartment with your wet hands. This may cause frostbite.
4. To prevent accidental power disconnection, plug the refrigerator directly to the source. Do not use a double adaptor as loss of power could lead to the spoiling of the stored food.
5. Do not place bottles in the freezer as they may crack when frozen.
6. Keep the door securely closed. If the door is left ajar, the controlled inner temperature will rise, resulting in food spoilage and increase in electricity costs.
7. Do not install the refrigerator in a damp or wet location as this may cause damage to the insulation and a leak. Condensation may also build on the outer cabinet and cause rust.
8. When installing or moving the refrigerator, make sure that you do not nip or kink the power cord. Damage of the power cord may cause electric shock or fire.
9. Do not use this refrigerator when the power cord or plug is damaged, or the outlet attachment is loose, as they may cause electric shock or fire.

Important:

• This refrigerator is for domestic use only, with an ambient temperature between +5^ and +38^ .
  The refrigerator should not be subjected to temperatures of -10^ for long periods.
  To be used on 220-240V mains voltage.

• To prevent damage to the outer cabinet, avoid contact with lacquer, and paint, etc.

• When cleaning your refrigerator, do not splash water directly on the outer cabinet or the interior. This may lead to rusting and deterioration of the electrical insulation.
• When cleaning any areas adjacent to electrical components, unplug the refrigerator first to prevent electric shock.

This unit is removable and can be carried to the kitchen or the table. It is designed to be used for stocking spices or seasonings.

• The handle may be deformed or crack when it is pulled strongly.

Do not remove with a handle.

INSTALLATION

1. This refrigerator is free standing type. Please keep adequate ventilation space around the refrigerator.

2. The figure shows minimum space necessary to maintain the cooling capability.

3. It is possible to use the refrigerator with a less amount of power consumption by keeping greater space.

4. If using the refrigerator in the space below size of the figure, it becomes cause of failure.

5. Using the front Adjustable foot, ensure that the refrigerator is positioned firmly and level on the floor.

Clean the inside parts with a cloth soaked in warm water. If soapy water is used, wipe it off thoroughly with water.

OPERATION

Controlling temperatures

• FREEZER TEMP. CONTROL regulates the quantity of cold air to the freezer.
• If the freezer does not cool even when setting FREEZER TEMP. CONTROL to MAX, set REFRIGERATOR TEMP. CONTROL to MAX as well.
• With FREEZER TEMP. CONTROL set to MAX, there will be less cold air directed to the refrigerator compartment, and the refrigerator compartment may not become cold enough.

REFRIGERATOR TEMP.CONTROL

• REFRIGERATOR TEMP. CONTROL controls the compressor running time of the refrigeration system.
• MAX setting will result in colder temperature in the both (refrigerator and freezer) compartments.
• The freezer compartment may not cool sufficiently when leaving REFRIGERATOR TEMP. CONTROL as MIN for an extensive period. To cool the freezer compartment properly, set REFRIGERATOR TEMP. CONTROL closer to MAX.

Over 35^ C ambient temperature

This is because MAX setting (FREEZER TEMP. CONTROL) may result in too little air flow to the refrigerator compartment, causing too warm temperature in the refrigerator compartment.

Under 10^ ambient temperature

If the foods in the refrigerator compartment freeze.

This is because the compressor operation is too short in winter, and not enough cold air is provided to the freezer compartment.

Hints when making ice

1. Do not over fill the Ice cube trays; otherwise the ice cubes will be joined together when frozen.
2. When the ice cubes are made, turn the lever clockwise to empty the ice into the Ice cube box.

NOTE:

To prevent damage to the Ice cube box, do not make ice in the Ice cube box or pour oil into it.

Deodorizing unit

Deodorizing catalyst is installed on the routes of cold air. No operation and cleaning are required.

Defrosting

Defrosting is fully automatic due to a unique energy saving system.

Thermometer

This refrigerator is provided with a THERMOMETER in the refrigerator compartment to allow you to control the average temperature in the coldest zone.

COLDEST ZONE

The symbol indicates the coldest zone in the refrigerator compartment.

(The door pocket positioned at the same height isn't the coldest zone.)

CHECKING THE TEMPERATURE IN THE COLDEST ZONE

You can carry out regular checks to ensure the temperature in the coldest zone is correct and, if necessary, adjust the refrigerator temp. control as indicated in the chapter "Controlling Temperature". To maintain a correct temperature inside the appliance, check that the thermometer is always BLUE. If the thermometer turns WHITE, the temperature is too high; in this case, increase the refrigerator temp. control setting and wait for 6 hours before checking the thermometer again.

NOTE:

• The internal temperature of the refrigerator depends on various factors such as the ambient temperature of the room, the amount of food stored and the frequency of door opening.
• When fresh food has been introduced or the door has been left open for some time, it is normal for the thermometer to turn WHITE.

Some household cleaning chemicals may affect the inside surfaces and plastic shelves resulting in splitting or cracks occurring.

When cleaning all plastic parts inside this refrigerator, only use diluted dishwashing liquid (soapy water)

• Take washing liquid (soap) water.
• Make sure that all plastic parts are thoroughly rinsed with water after cleaning.

1. Remove the shelves and pockets from the cabinet and door. Wash them in warm soapy dishwashing water; rinse in clean water and dry.
2. Clean the inside with a cloth soaked in warm soapy dishwashing water. Then, use cold water to wipe off soapy water.
3. Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth each time it is soiled.
4. Clean the Magnetic door seal with a toothbrush and warm soapy dishwashing water.

NOTE:

• Do not use polishing powder, benzine, hot water etc.
• If undiluted detergent is used or soapy water is not wiped off thoroughly, cracking of plastic parts can result.
• Wipe any food oils adhered to plastic components as they can cause cracking of the plastic surface.

When the compartment light is blown

Contact the SHARP Service Center to request a replacement compartment bulb. The compartment bulb is not to be removed other than by qualified service personnel.

Switching off your refrigerator

If you switch your refrigerator off when you are going away for an extended period, remove all food, clean the interior thoroughly. Remove the power cord plug from the power socket and leave all doors open.

STORING FOOD

Refrigeration reduces the rate of food spoilage.

To maximize the shelf life of perishable food products, ensure that the food is of the freshest possible quality. The following is a general guide to help promote longer food storage.

Fruit / Vegetables

To minimize moisture loss, fruit and vegetables should be loosely enclosed in a plastic material e.g. wrap, bags (do not seal) and place in the vegetable crisper.

Dairy Products & Eggs

• Most dairy products have a use by date on the outer packaging which informs the recommended temperature and shelf life of the product.
• Eggs should be stored in the Egg pocket.

Meats / Fish / Poultry

• Place on a plate or dish and cover with paper or plastic wrap.
• For larger cuts of meat, fish, or poultry, place to the rear of the shelves.
• Ensure all cooked food is wrapped securely or placed in an airtight container.

NOTE:

• Evenly place the food on the shelves to allow the cooling air to circulate efficiently.
• Hot foods should be cooled before storing. Storing hot foods increases the temperature in the unit and increases the risk of food spoilage.
• Do not block the outlet and inlet of the cool air circulating circuit with foods or containers; otherwise the foods will not be evenly cooled throughout the refrigerator.
• Do not place food directly in front of cold air outlet. This may lead to the food freezing.

FOR BEST FREEZING

• Quality of foods should be fresh.
• Freeze small quantities of food at a time to freeze them quickly.
• Food should be properly stored or covered and the air should be removed to seal tightly.
• Evenly place the food in the freezer.
• Label bags or containers to keep an inventory of freezing food.

Before you call for service, check the following points.

The outside of a cabinet is hot when touched.	It is normal. The hot pipe is in the cabinet in order to prevent dew generation.
When there is refrigerator noise.	It is normal for the refrigerator to produce the following sounds. • Loud noise produced by the compressor when operation starts --- Sound becomes quieter after a while. • Loud noise produced once a day by the compressor --- Operating sound produced immediately after automatic defrost operation. • Sound of flowing fluid (gurgling sound, fizzling sound) --- Sound of refrigerant flowing in pipes (sound may become louder from time to time). • Cracking or crunching sound, Squeaking sound --- Sound produced by expansion and contraction of inner walls and internal parts during cooling.
Frosting or dew generation occurs inside or outside the refrigerator.	This may occur in one of the following cases. Use a wet cloth for wiping frost and a dry cloth for wiping dew. • When the ambient humidity is high. • When the door is frequently opened and closed. • When foods containing plenty of moisture are stored. (Wrapping is required.)
The foods in the refrigerator compartment freeze.	• Is the refrigerator operated for a long time with REFRIGERATOR TEMP. CONTROL set at MAX? • Low ambient temperature may cause placed foods to freeze even if REFRIGERATOR TEMP. CONTROL is set to MIN.
It smells in the compartment.	• Wrapping is required for the foods with strong smell. • Deodorizing unit cannot remove all of smell.
