General Chain Saw Safety Warnings
- Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the chain saw is operating. Before you start the chain saw, make sure the saw chain is not contacting anything. A moment of inattention while operating chain saws may cause entanglement of your clothing or body with the saw chain.
- Always hold the chain saw with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on the front handle. Holding the chain saw with a reversed hand configuration increases the risk of personal injury and should never be done.
- Hold the chain saw by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the saw chain may contact hidden wiring. Saw chains contacting a "live" wire may make exposed metal parts of the chain saw "live" and could give the operator an electric shock.
- Wear eye protection. Further protective equipment for hearing, head, hands, legs and feet is recommended. Adequate protective equipment will reduce personal injury from flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain.
- Do not operate a chain saw in a tree, on a ladder, from a rooftop, or any unstable support. Operation of a chain saw in this manner could result in serious personal injury.
- Always keep proper footing and operate the chain saw only when standing on fixed, secure and level surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces may cause a loss of balance or control of the chain saw.
- When cutting a limb that is under tension be alert for spring back. When the tension in the wood fibres is released the spring loaded limb may strike the operator and/or throw the chain saw out of control.
- Use extreme caution when cutting brush and saplings. The slender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.
- Carry the chain saw by the front handle with the chain saw switched off and away from your body. When transporting or storing the chain saw, always fit the guide bar cover. Proper handling of the chain saw will reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving saw chain.
- Follow instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning and changing the bar and chain. Improperly tensioned or lubricated chain may either break or increase the chance for kickback.
- Cut wood only. Do not use chain saw for purposes not intended. For example: do not use chain saw for cutting metal, plastic, masonry or non-wood building materials. Use of the chain saw for operations different than intended could result in a hazardous situation.
- This chain saw is not intended for tree felling. Use of the chain saw for operations different than intended could result in serious injury to the operator or bystanders.
- Follow all instructions when clearing jammed material, storing or servicing the chain saw. Make sure the switch is off and the battery pack is removed. Unexpected actuation of the chain saw while clearing jammed material or servicing may result in serious personal injury.
Additional safety instructions for chainsaws for tree care
⚠ WARNING! This tool is a very dangerous tool if you are not careful or use the tool improperly. This tool can cause serious injury to the operator or other persons. It is therefore of the utmost importance that these operating instructions are carefully read and understood.
General Information
- The information in these operating instructions is in no way a substitute for professional expertise and experience. If you are not sure how to operate the tool, contact a person with specialist knowledge and experience.
- Only use a chainsaw for tree care if you have the necessary training. In particular, do not work in trees without training. The risk of serious injury is very high.
- Do not use a chainsaw for tree care for work that you can also do with a chainsaw with a rear handle. In the event of a kickback, you can control a chainsaw with a rear handle better than a chainsaw for pruning.
Preparation
- There is an increased risk of loss of control with this tool. Persons carrying out tree care work with this tool must have completed appropriate training in pruning and working techniques beforehand. The operator must be equipped with safety equipment such as a lifting platform, ropes and safety harnesses.
Operation
- Prolonged use of the tool can lead to blood circulation disorders in the hands caused by vibration (Raynaud's syndrome).
If you notice any unusual impairment, stop work immediately and consult a doctor.
- Always apply the chain brake before starting the engine and release the throttle lock immediately after starting the engine. Make sure that the engine speed has returned to idle before the chain brake is released.
- Only use the throttle lock when starting the engine.
⚠ WARNING! Insert a throttle lock before using the tool.
Causes and Operator Prevention of Kickback

natural_image
Two technical diagrams showing mechanical components and a robotic arm, labeled (a) and (b), with no readable text or symbols.- Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut (Fig. b).
- Tip contact in some cases may cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator (Fig. a).
- Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the operator.
- Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the saw which could result in serious personal injury. Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw. As a chain saw user, you should take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.
Kickback is the result of chain saw misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below:
- Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and fingers encircling the chain saw handles, with both hands on the saw and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback forces can be controlled by the op-
erator, if proper precautions are taken. Do not let go of the chain saw.
- Do not overreach and do not cut above shoulder height. This helps prevent unintended tip contact and enables better control of the chain saw in unexpected situations.
- Only use replacement guide bars and saw chains specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement guide bars and saw chains may cause chain breakage and/or kickback.
- Follow the manufacturer's sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain. Decreasing the depth gauge height can lead to increased kickback.
Residual risks
There will always be residual risks even if you operate this device according to the instructions. The following hazards may occur in connection with the type and design of this device:
- Hearing damage if suitable ear protection is not worn.
- Health injuries resulting from the effect of hand/arm vibration in the event that the tool is used over a longer period of time or is not used and maintained properly.
- Cutting injuries
WARNING! Danger due to electromagnetic field generated while the tool is in operation. Under certain circumstances, this field may negatively affect active or passive medical implants. In order to reduce the danger of serious or fatal injuries, we recommend that individuals who wear medical implants should consult their doctor and the manufacturer of the implant before operating the tool.
Preparation
⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury due to unintentional start-up. Only insert the batteries into the tool once the tool is fully prepared for use.

Operation
Before use
⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury! Always wear protective gloves, safety goggles, ear muffs, a hard hat and cut-resistant work clothing when working with the tool.
⚠️ CAUTION! Dust may be generated when sawing dry wood. Wear a suitable dust mask.
Carry out the following steps before operating the chainsaw:
• Tensioning the saw chain, p. 37
- Pouring in chain oil, p. 38
• Charge and insert both batteries
- Checking the chain brake, p. 38
- Checking chain lubrication, p. 38
NOTICE! Check the tool for damage after dropping it on the floor or other impacts. The tool may only be started when it is in a safe operating condition.
Tensioning the saw chain
NOTICE! Do not re-tension or change the saw chain when it is hot because it shrinks slightly once it has cooled down. If this is not observed it can lead to damage on the guide rail or the engine because the saw chain is now too taut on the blade bar.
Regularly tightening the saw chain provides safety for the user and reduces and/or prevents wear and chain damage. We recommend that the user check the chain tension before starting work and at intervals of approx. 10 minutes and correct it if necessary. The saw chain warms up when working with the saw and thus expands slightly. These “expansions” can be expected especially from newer saw chains.
Chain tension and chain lubrication have a significant impact on the service life of the saw chain. The chain tension of a new saw chain must be readjusted after a maximum of 5 cuts.
The saw chain is properly tensioned when it does not hang from the underside of the blade bar and cannot be moved around by a gloved hand. When pulling on the saw chain with 9 N (approx. 1 kg) of force, the saw chain and blade bar should not be separated by a distance of more than 2 mm.

text_image
10 min 9N max. 2 mm⚠️ CAUTION! Risk of injury due to unintentional start-up. Switch off the tool. Remove the batteries from the tool.
Checking the chain tension
Pull the saw chain (6) upwards at the top of the blade bar (5).
- Saw chain can hardly be pulled upwards: The chain tension is too high. Relax the saw chain.
- The saw chain can be pulled up so far that the driving elements are not fully visible: The chain tension is correct.
- The saw chain can be pulled up so far that the driving elements are fully visible: The chain tension is too low. Tension the saw chain.
Procedure
-
Deactivate the chain brake: Pull the chain brake lever (4) back towards the front handle (11).
You can only refit the sprocket cover (9) when the chain brake band has been released. -

⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury from the trailing saw chain. Do not use the chainsaw if the chain brake does not work properly. Contact the service centre.
Checking chain lubrication
NOTICE! If the chainsaw is used with too little oil, the cutting performance and lifespan of the saw chain will decrease as the saw chain will become blunt more quickly. You can recognise insufficient oil by the smoke development or discolouration of the blade bar. Make sure that there is always oil flowing onto the chain.
Notes
- Before starting work, check the oil level.
- You can check the chain lubrication at any time during operation.
Procedure
-
While the saw chain is running: Hold the chainsaw above clear ground. Observe the trace of oil. The chainsaw must not touch the ground!
-
Significant trace of oil: The chainsaw is working properly.
- Slight trace of oil: Check chain lubrication, adjust oil flow
- No trace of oil: Fill with chain oil, check chain lubrication, clean oil passage
Pouring in chain oil
⚠ WARNING! Risk of fire! Always turn off the device and let the engine cool down before filling with chain oil.
The oil flows to the blade bar (5) as soon as the chain starts running.
- Check the oil level regularly and top up with oil if the level is low. Tank capacity: 190 cm^3 (0.19 l)

Limbing work
⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury! If the saw chain is jammed, do not try to pull the chainsaw out by force. Switch off the engine and use a lever arm or wedge to release the chainsaw.
- Ensure that you are standing firmly and securely when delimbing.
-
Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, clips and wires from the tree.
-
The saw chain must not touch the ground or any object while sawing through the material or thereafter.
- Do not saw with the rail tip.
- Please observe the precautionary measures to protect against kickback (Causes and Operator Prevention of Kickback, p. 35)
- If possible, support the pruning saw with the claw stop (14) when delimbing.
- Make sure that the chainsaw can swing through at the end of the cut due to its own weight. The chainsaw will no longer be supported in the cut. Counteract this accordingly.
- Always switch off the chainsaw engine before moving from tree to tree.
Limbing work in sections
Shorten long or thick branches before making the final separating cut. This prevents the saw chain from jamming.
Working in the tree with rope climbing technique
This section describes working methods to reduce the risk of injury when using chain-saws for tree care when working at height using rope climbing techniques. It can serve as a basis for instructions and training documents, but is no substitute for proper training. The recommendations in this appendix are just one example of best practice.
Stricter national or other regulations may apply.
This section explains
- general information to be observed before using a tree care chainsaw for work at height with rope climbing technology,
- how to prepare a tree care chainsaw for use with rope climbing technology and
- how to use a pruning chainsaw to prune and cut up trees, including safe working posture for two-handed use, how to start the chainsaw, how to cut with the chainsaw and how to free a jammed chainsaw.
This section does not deal with control techniques for cut branches and twigs or the points on safe use already covered.
General recommendations
- The operator of a pruning saw working at height with rope climbing technology should never work alone. A worker on the ground who is trained in appropriate
emergency procedures should be present to assist.
- The operator should be trained in safe climbing and working positions and have appropriate equipment such as harness, ropes, harnesses, carabiners and other equipment to ensure a safe working position for themselves and the chainsaw.
Preparing the chainsaw for use
- The chainsaw should be checked, started and switched off again by the worker on the ground before it is passed to the operator in the tree.
- The chainsaw requires a suitable sling for attachment to the operator's climbing harness (Fig. B.①).
- The sling must be attached to the retaining eyelet on the rear of the chain-saw.
- Suitable snap hooks must be provided to attach the chainsaw indirectly (i.e. via the sling) and directly (i.e. to the retaining eye on the chainsaw) to the climbing harness.
- Before passing the chainsaw on to the operator, ensure that it is securely fastened.
- Before removing the chainsaw from the climbing equipment, make sure that it is attached to the climbing harness.
- Attaching the chainsaw directly to the climbing harness reduces the risk of damage to the equipment when moving in the tree. However, make sure that the chainsaw is always switched off.
- The chainsaw should only be attached to the recommended attachment points of the climbing harness, which are located in the centre (front or back) or on the sides. The chainsaw should ideally be fixed at the centre back to keep it away from the climbing ropes and to keep the weight central to the operator's spine (Fig. B.②).
- When moving the chainsaw from one lifting eye to another, the operator must ensure that it is secured in the new position before releasing it from the previous lifting eye.
Using the pruning saw in the tree
- The chain brake should always be applied before a running chainsaw is lowered from the tree.
- The user should ensure that the chainsaw batteries are fully charged before making critical cuts.
- Accident analysis
An analysis of accidents involving these chainsaws during tree care work shows that the main cause is improper one-handed operation of the chainsaw. In the vast majority of accidents, the operator does not adopt a safe working position that allows him to hold both handles of the chainsaw. The following leads to an increased risk of injury:
- The chainsaw is not held firmly during kickback.
- The chainsaw gets out of control and tends to come into contact with the climbing ropes and the body (especially the left hand and left arm).
- Due to the unsafe working position, control is lost and contact with the chainsaw occurs (unexpected movement during operation of the chainsaw).
- Safe working position for working with both hands
To ensure that the chainsaw can be held with both hands, the operator should generally aim for a safe working position in order to work with the chainsaw as follows:
• horizontal cuts at hip height
• vertical cuts at the level of the solar plexus
- If the user is working near vertical logs with low lateral forces, a secure stand may be sufficient for a safe working position. If the user moves away from the trunk, measures must be taken to neutralise or compensate for the increasing lateral forces. For example, the main rope can be routed via an additional anchor point or the climbing harness can be connected to an additional anchor point using an adjustable sling (Fig. B.③).
- A foot sling made from a webbing sling can be helpful in achieving a secure footing in the working position (Fig. B.④).
Freeing a trapped chainsaw
Procedure for freeing a trapped chainsaw:
- Switch off the chainsaw and attach it securely to the tree trunk towards the cut or use an additional rope.
- Pull the chainsaw out of the cutting notch while lifting the branch if necessary.
- If necessary, free the jammed chainsaw with a handsaw or a second chainsaw at least 30 cm away from the jammed chainsaw.
Regardless of whether a hand saw or chainsaw is used to free the trapped chainsaw, the necessary cuts should be made between the trapped chainsaw and the branch tips so that the chainsaw is not carried away by the severed piece and further complicates the situation.
Cleaning, maintenance and storage
⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury due to unintentional start-up. Protect yourself when performing maintenance or cleaning work. Switch off the device and remove the battery (17).
You should have any repair and maintenance work that is not described in these instructions carried out by our Service Centre. Only use original replacement parts.
CAUTION! Please be aware that the chainsaw may leak oil after use if it is stored on its side or head. This is a normal occurrence and is caused by the ventilation opening on the top edge of the tank which is a necessary component; this is not grounds for complaint. Since every chainsaw is inspected and tested using oil during manufacture, a small amount of oil may remain in the tank after emptying, which may slightly dirty the housing during transport. Please clean the housing with a cloth.
Cleaning
⚠ WARNING! Electric shock! Never spray down the device with water.
⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury! Always switch off the motor and let it cool down, then remove the batteries before any cleaning work.
CAUTION! Cutting injuries! Wear cut-resistant gloves when working with the saw chain or with the blade bar.
NOTICE! Risk of damage. Chemical substances may attack the plastic parts of the machine. Do not use any cleaning agents or solvents.
Clean the machine thoroughly. This will extend the life of the machine and prevent accidents.
Cleaning after every use
- Keep the handles free of petrol, oil or grease. If necessary, clean the handles with a damp cloth washed in soapy water.
- Clean the saw chain. Do not use any liquids to clean the saw chain. Lightly oil the saw chain with chain oil after cleaning.
- For cleaning, also remove the sprocket cover (9) so that this area can also be cleaned.
- Clean the blade bar (5)
- Clean the ventilation slits and the surface of the machine with a paintbrush or dry cloth.
- Clean the oil passage (23) to ensure fault-free, automatic oiling of the saw chain during operation. Use a brush or a cloth to help remove residues from the oil passage.

Procedure
- Switch off the tool and remove the batteries (17) from the tool.
- Place the device on a level surface.
- Deactivate the chain brake: Pull the chain brake lever (4) back towards the front handle (11).
You can only refit the sprocket cover (9) when the chain brake band has been released.
- Turn the wing screw (7) and rotary wheel for chain tensioner (8) ⬇ to loosen the chain tension and remove the sprocket cover (9).
-
Remove the sprocket cover (9).
-
Push the blade bar (5) towards the chain sprocket (26).
You can remove the saw chain (6) and blade bar (5).
Changing the saw chain and blade bar
Prior to changing the saw chain, the groove of the guide rail must be cleaned of dirt because dirt deposits available can cause the saw chain to break out of the rail. The deposits can also absorb the chain oil. So the consequence would be that the chain oil would not or only a small part of it would reach the underside of the rail and the lubrication would be reduced.
⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury! The use of unauthorised combinations of blade bar and saw chain can lead to an increased risk of kickback.
Requirements
- Mounting the saw chain and blade bar, p. 42
Permitted cutting equipment
- Blade bar M1431246-1041TL (Trilink)
- Saw chain CL14346TL (Trilink)
Procedure
-
Replace the blade bar (5)/ the saw chain (6).
-
Fit the blade bar (5) and saw chain (6) as described under Installing the saw chain and blade bar, p. 43 beschrieben.

Tighten the wing nut (7) slightly. It should still be possible to turn the rotary wheel for chain tension (8).
-
Tension the saw chain: Turn the rotary wheel for chain tension (8) ⬇.
-
Tighten the wing nut (7) ⬇.
CAUTION! The chainsaw can be re-oiled. Please be aware that the chainsaw will regrease after use and may leak oil if it is stored on its side or upside down.
Running in a new saw chain
The tensioning force of a new saw chain decreases after some time. You must therefore retighten the saw chain after the first 5 cuts or after 10 minutes of sawing at the latest (Tensioning the saw chain, p. 37).
⚠ WARNING! Risk of injury! Never attach a new saw chain to a worn chain sprocket or to a damaged or worn blade bar. The saw chain could jump off or break.
Adjusting the chain tension
Adjusting the chain tension is described in section Tensioning the saw chain, p. 37.

-
Clean the oil passage (23) to ensure fault-free, automatic oiling of the saw chain during operation.
- Installing the saw chain and blade bar, p. 43
NOTICE! When in an optimal condition, the oil passages will automatically spray the saw chain with a little oil a few seconds after starting the chainsaw.
Changing the chain catch
- Mounting the saw chain and blade bar, p. 42
- Loosen and remove the screws on the chain catch (14).
- Replace the chain catch (14).
- Tighten the screws on the chain catch (14).
- Installing the saw chain and blade bar, p. 43
Turning the blade bar
CAUTION! Cutting injuries! Wear cut-resistant gloves when working with the saw chain or with the blade bar.
Notes
- The blade bar (5) needs to be reversed regularly after a working time of about 10 hours in order to ensure even wear.
Procedure
- Mounting the saw chain and blade bar, p. 42
- Turn the blade bar along its horizontal axis.
When doing so, pay attention to the correct rotation direction of the saw chain - Installing the saw chain and blade bar, p. 43
Sharpening the cutting teeth
CAUTION! Risk of injury! An incorrectly sharpened saw chain increases the danger of kickback! Use cut-resistant gloves when working with the saw chain or with the blade bar.
A sharp saw chain ensures optimum cutting performance. It effortlessly eats through the wood and leaves behind large, long wood chips. A saw chain is dull when you have to push the cutting equipment through the wood and the wood chips are very small. With a very blunt saw chain, no chips are produced, only wood dust.
Special tools are required for sharpening the saw chain to ensure that the chain is sharpened at the correct angle and to the correct depth. For inexperienced chain-saw users, we recommend having the saw chain sharpened by an expert or a specialist workshop. If you are confident that you can sharpen the chain, proceed according to the instructions for your saw chain sharpener (e.g. PARKSIDE PSG 85 B2).
- The sawing parts of the saw chain are the cutting links, which consist of a cutting tooth and a depth gauge lug. The height distance between these two determines the sharpening depth.
- The saw chain is worn and must be replaced with a new saw chain when only approx. 4 mm of the cutting tooth is left.
- The following values must be taken into account when sharpening the cutting teeth:
• Sharpening angle (25°)
- Front angle (10°)
• Sharpening depth (0,6 mm)
• Round file diameter (4,8 mm (3/16"))
⚠ WARNING! Risk of accident! Deviations from the dimensions of the cutting edge geometry can lead to an increased tendency of kickback by the machine.
Tools and aids required
- Round file
- Flat file
Procedure
- Switch off the tool and remove the batteries.
- Ensure that the saw chain is tightly tensioned to enable correct sharpening.
- Only sharpen from the inside out. Guide the round file from the inside of the cutting tooth to the outside. Lift off the file when you pull it back.
- Sharpen the teeth on one side first. Then turn the saw chain over and sharpen the teeth on the other side.
- Check the length of the cutting links. After sharpening, all the cutting links must have the same length and width.
-
After every third sharpening, check the sharpening depth (depth gauge) and re-file the height using a flat file. The depth gauge should be set back by approx. 0,6 mm from the cutting tooth.
-
After resetting, round off the depth gauge slightly towards the front.
Storage
- Remove the rechargeable batteries.
- Clean and maintain the tool prior to storage.
- Attach the chain guard (22).
- Empty the oil tank prior to longer periods of non-use. Dispose of waste oil environmentally correctly (Disposal/environmental protection, p. 46). There may still be oil residues within hoses and in the tool that could leak out during storage. Place the tool on a suitable base/oil pan for storage.
- Store the tool in a dry and dustproof location and out of reach of children.
Devices with battery:
- The storage temperature for the battery and device is between 15 °C and
25 °C. Avoid extreme cold or heat during storage to ensure the battery output is not adversely affected.
- Remove the battery from the device before storage over a longer period (see separate operating instructions for battery and charger).
Transport
- Switch off the tool each time before transport, engage the chain brake and remove the batteries.
- Cover the blade bar and saw chain with the chain guard (22) when you transport the tool.
- Short distances at the place of work: Carry the tool by the front handle (11) with the blade bar pointing backwards.
- Secure the tool against tipping over during transport (including in vehicles) to prevent injury, damage or loss of fuel.
