Frequently Asked Questions - TB4DUALDOCKPD i-TEC

What is the maximum resolution I can get with a single monitor?
The maximum resolution depends on your computer's DisplayPort version. With DisplayPort 1.4, you can achieve 8K (7680x4320) at 30 Hz. With DisplayPort 1.2, the limit is 5K (5120x2880) at 60 Hz.
Can I connect two monitors simultaneously?
Yes. Use an HDMI cable and a Thunderbolt 4 cable (or two Thunderbolt 4 cables). The maximum resolution for two monitors is 4K (4096x2160) at 60 Hz each.
My laptop does not recognize the docking station. What should I do?
Make sure your laptop supports Thunderbolt 3/4, USB4, or USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode. On Windows, enable the Thunderbolt device in system settings. Check for Thunderbolt drivers from your PC manufacturer. On macOS, the dock appears in 'About This Mac' > 'System Report' > 'Thunderbolt'.
Can the docking station charge my laptop?
Yes, via the Thunderbolt 4 port (Power Delivery). The maximum charging power is 96 W, which allows charging most compatible laptops.
Can I use the docking station with a standard USB-C port (non-Thunderbolt)?
Yes, but operation depends on the computer manufacturer. The dock uses the Titan Ridge chipset and may not be compatible with all USB-C ports. Ensure your USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and Power Delivery.
Why does the screen flicker when connecting a monitor?
This is normal: the computer detects the new monitor and adjusts display settings. Wait a few seconds. If the flickering persists, disconnect and reconnect the Thunderbolt cable after 10 seconds.
How do I set up audio via the docking station?
On Windows, go to Control Panel > Sound and set 'USB Advanced Audio Device' as the default device. On macOS, go to System Preferences > Sound and select the desired audio output. To use the headphone and monitor speaker simultaneously, create a multi-output device in Audio MIDI Setup.
Does the docking station require driver installation?
No, drivers are included in the operating system. On Windows, make sure you have the latest Thunderbolt drivers from your PC manufacturer. On macOS and Linux, drivers are built-in.
What is the speed of the Ethernet port?
The 2.5G Ethernet port (Realtek RTL8156) supports speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, backward compatible with 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps, and 10 Mbps.
How to fix random connection issues?
Most issues are resolved by disconnecting the Thunderbolt cable from the docking station and computer, waiting 10 seconds, then reconnecting. If the problem persists, check your computer's firmware/BIOS updates and contact i-TEC support.

Important note about 8K resolution: The docking station supports the resolution up to 8K (7680x4320/30Hz), but this resolution can only be set if supported by your laptop - Thunderbolt™ 3 must support DisplayPort 1.4. In case Thunderbolt™ 3 of your laptop only supports DisplayPort 1.2, the maximum resolution is just 5K 5120x2880/60Hz.

*Important notice about the USB-C port connection: The docking station is built on the Titan Ridge chipset and supports also the USB-C port connection, but it also must be supported by the laptop. USB-C is an open standard, which means that laptop manufacturers can freely customize the USB-C protocol. Unfortunately, this means that docking stations built on the Intel Titan Ridge chipset may not work properly on all devices with the USB-C port.

GLOSSARY

  • Interface / port / connector / input / slot – a place where two devices are physically connected.
  • Chipset – a semiconductor device in a laptop, tablet or PC controlling the function of a port.
  • USB-C / USB Type-C / Thunderbolt™ 3 – is a new symmetric connector and standard, introduced by USB-IF in their specification USB 3.1. Windows 10 (Microsoft), macOS X (Apple) and Chrome OS and Android (Google) have introduced native support for this connector. It allows faster charging, energizing, double-function (a host but also a guest), support for alternative modes (DisplayPort, MHL, Thunderbolt) and error messaging using Billboard equipment.
  • USB 3.1 / 3.0 / 2.0 – a standard for USB interface / port for connection of various USB devices. Various USB devices can be connected to the docking station or adapter using the USB interface type A. USB type B is used for connecting the docking station or adapter to a laptop or tablet.
  • HDMI / Display Port – a standard for digital graphical interface / port for connection of monitors and other graphical display devices.
  • LAN (Local Area Network) – the local computer network is now the most popular Ethernet that achieves a theoretical transfer rate of up to 1 Gbit/s at the docking station - GLAN / RJ-45.
  • Audio - designation for audio input (microphone) or output (earphones / loudspeakers).

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Hardware requirements: Device with a free Thunderbolt, USB4 or USB-C port

Power Delivery requirements: Device with a free Thunderbolt, USB4 or USB-C port with "Power Delivery" support

Video Output Requirements: Device with a free Thunderbolt, USB4 or USB-C port with "DisplayPort Alternate Mode" support

Operating System: Windows 10/11, macOS and Linux with latest updates

To play Ultra HD 4K/5K/8K video, the computer must be able to decode the video with its GPU. Especially for less powerful laptops, it is true that they can handle 4K/5K/8K video playback, but the result is not ideal (interruptions, video tearing).

INSTALLING THE DRIVERS

The docking station can be connected directly, the drivers are included in the operating system. For Windows 10, please make sure that you have the latest Thunderbolt™ 3 drivers from your laptop manufacturer installed in your computer.

HARDWARE INSTALLATION (CONNECTING THE DOCKING STATION TO LAPTOP / TABLET)

  1. Turn on your laptop/tablet and connect the power adapter to the docking station.
  2. Plug the power adapter of the docking station into a 110V/230V AC power supply.
  3. Plug the Thunderbolt™ 4 cable into the Thunderbolt™ 4 port on the rear panel of the docking station.
  4. Plug the other end into an available Thunderbolt™ 3/4, USB4 or USB-C* port on your laptop/tablet.
  5. In Windows OS, enable a new Thunderbolt™ 4 device - see image

  1. Subsequently, the automatic installation of ports in each system starts.
  2. After finishing installation, we recommend that you restart the laptop / tablet.

In Windows, the LAN port appears in Start → Control Panel (View Small Icons) → Device Manager → Network Adapters as "Realtek RTL8153". Audio ports can be found in Start → Control Panel (View Small Icons) → Device Manager → Audio, Video and Game Controllers as "USB Advanced Audio Device" and/or according to the connected monitor (e.g. in Fig. "LG Ultra HD (Intel ^® Display Audio)").

The installed ports are shown in macOS X as "TB4DUALDOCKPD" in "About This Mac" → "System Profiler" → "Hardware" → "Thunderbolt".

CONNECTING THE DISPLAYPORT MONITOR

Use an HDMI cable or Thunderbolt™ cable to connect the monitor to the docking station. The monitor may flicker on the laptop/tablet during installation of the additional monitor, which is a standard condition. The dock supports a maximum of two monitors.
