Frequently Asked Questions - PIR500 VELLEMAN

How to install the PIR500 detector?
Cut the circuit fuse, remove the front panel, connect the wires according to the diagram, insert the device into a flush-mount box, then replace the fuse. Adjust the settings before replacing the front panel.
What are the three operating modes?
The three modes are: On (lamp permanently on), Off (lamp off), and PIR (motion detection with time delay).
How to adjust the detector sensitivity?
Use potentiometer number 3 on the device (PIR sensitivity). Turn it until you get the desired reaction to movements in the detection zone.
How to adjust the lighting duration after detection?
Setting number 6 (output signal duration) allows you to choose a time delay between 5 seconds and 420 seconds (7 minutes).
Why does my lamp stay on permanently?
Check that the selector is not in the 'On' position. If so, switch it to 'PIR'. Otherwise, reduce the PIR sensitivity or move the detector away from heat sources (air conditioner, heater).
Does the detector work during the day?
Yes, thanks to the photosensitivity setting (number 7). Turn it so that the detector reacts to the desired ambient light, even in broad daylight.
What is the maximum range of the detector?
The maximum range is 12 meters, but it is adjustable via the PIR sensitivity. The detection angle is over 140 degrees.
Can I use LED or compact fluorescent lamps?
No, the PIR500 is designed only for incandescent lamps. The use of fluorescent lamps is discouraged.
How to test the operation before final installation?
Set the selector to 'On': the lamp should turn on. Switch to 'Off': it turns off. In 'PIR' mode, move in front of the detector: the indicator LED flashes and the lamp turns on.
What are the installation tips to avoid false detections?
Install the detector away from heat sources (radiators, air conditioners) and constantly moving objects (curtains, animals). Orient it so that intrusions occur perpendicular to the detection field.

4. Installation

  1. Deactivate and remove the fuse of the electric circuit on which you want to install the device.
  2. Take the front from the device.
  3. Connect the wiring to the terminals at the back of the device, according to the diagram at the right.
  4. Insert the device into the pattress and fix it either with the screws of the pattress through the mounting holes at the edges, or with the screws of the device itself that widen the attachment clamps.

PIR500

  1. Reinstall the fuse and switch it on

  2. Test and regulate the device (see "Testing and Adjustment") and put the front back on.

5. Testing and adjustment

  1. Set the function switch (ill. 1, #5) to 'on', there should be a continuous output signal (the lamp should be on).
  2. Set the switch to 'off', there should be no output signal (the lamp should be off).
  3. Set the switch to PIR and adjust the PIR and light sensitivity (ill. 1, #3 & 7) until the reaction of the device to fits your needs.
  4. Determine how long the output signal should last by means of the timer adjustment (ill. 1, #6).

6. Operation

  • The PIR500 has 3 operation modes: on / off / movement detection (PIR).
  • The detector is much more sensitive to objects moving across the detection area (ill. 2) than it is to objects coming straight at it (ill. 3). This is a very important consideration when selecting the mounting location.
  • The device can operate in both day and night situations, thanks to the adjustability of the PIR sensitivity and the light sensitivity. The duration of the output signal can also be adjusted.
  • The device can be installed in round as well as square pattresses.
  • The detection indicator flashes once every time the device detects movement.
  • Do not use this device to control a fluorescent lamp.
  • Do not install the device where it can detect constantly moving objects, or near temperature regulating devices such as air-conditioning and heating devices.
  • This device should be installed, maintained and repaired by a qualified person.
