Frequently Asked Questions - PL790 Soundmaster

How to install the turntable platter?
Place the metal platter on the center spindle, aligning the cutout with the drive roller. Pull the belt over the drive pulley. Then, insert the dust cover hinges into the brackets on the back of the unit.
How to adjust the tonearm counterweight?
Set the anti-skating to 0. Release the tonearm and position it above the platter. Turn the counterweight until the arm is parallel to the record (balance). Then, turn the graduated ring to align the 0 with the index, then turn the counterweight to achieve the desired tracking force (usually 3g).
How to connect the turntable to an amplifier?
Use the provided RCA cables (red/white). Plug them into the LINE/PHONO jacks on the back. Set the LINE/PHONO switch to LINE if your amplifier does not have a phono input, otherwise set it to PHONO. Make sure to connect the ground wire (black) to the amplifier's ground terminal.
How to use the Bluetooth function?
Set the Bluetooth switch to ON. Activate pairing mode on your Bluetooth speaker. The blue LED blinks during searching and becomes solid once connected. If no device is found after 3 minutes, the LED turns red; turn Bluetooth off and on again.
How to clean the stylus?
Use a dedicated cleaning device or a soft brush. Do not rub vigorously and never use solvents or chemicals. The stylus is very fragile; improper cleaning can damage it.
What to do if no sound comes from the speakers?
Check that the unit is powered on (ON/OFF switch on the back). Make sure the RCA cables are properly connected and the LINE/PHONO switch is in the correct position. Check the volume on your amplifier. If using Bluetooth, check the pairing.
How to change the playback speed (33/45 RPM)?
Use the 33/45 RPM switch located near the tonearm. For 45 RPM records with a large center hole, use the included adapter.
Can I replace the cartridge myself?
The manual does not provide details for cartridge replacement. It is recommended to have this done by a qualified professional to avoid damaging the tonearm or cartridge.
How to maintain the turntable?
Clean the cabinet and cover with a soft, dry cloth. Never use detergents or abrasive products. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources. Keep the unit in a dry, well-ventilated area.
The turntable stops spinning during playback, what do I do?
Check that the drive belt is properly placed on the platter and pulley. If the belt is loose or broken, it must be replaced by a professional. Also ensure the START/STOP switch is in the START position.

Notes about the record stylus

Record styluses are precision parts, so handle them carefully to avoid bending or damaging their tips. If a stylus becomes bent or damaged, it might not be able to follow the audio groove precisely and could damage records or cause another malfunction.
If a stylus becomes dirty, use a commercially available stylus cleaner or similar product to clean it.
Do not rub the stylus tip forcefully with anything hard. Do not wipe the stylus with thinner or other chemicals. Doing so could harm it.

ATTACHING THE TURNTABLE COVER

  1. Insert the hinges completely into the hinge holders at the left and right ends of the back side of the main unit.
  2. Align the tops of the hinges with the turntable cover hinge holders and insert them.

REMOVING THE TURNTABLE COVER

Hold both edges of the turntable cover and lift it slowly to remove it along with the hinges from the unit. Then, remove the hinges from the turntable cover.

ADJUSTING THE TONE ARM

Level Balance Adjustment

  1. Set the "ANTI-SKATING" knob to "0".
  2. Release the arm clamp and move the tonearm to the space between the arm rest and the platter, taking care not to damage the stylus.
  3. Set the "CUE LEVER" to the down position.
  4. Support the headshell's finger-lift with one hand and attain the level balance by turning the counterweight either clockwise or counter-clock wise. "Level balance" means that the tonearm is parallel to the record on the platter and that the tonearm pipe. Therefor should not tilt toward the counterweight side or the headshell side.

  5. Return the tonearm to the arm rest and fasten the arm clamp. Since the tracking force is zero when the tonearm is balanced level, turn just the tracking force scale ring in front of the counter-weight and set the "0" on the scale to the index line on the shaft. Be careful not to turn the counterweight otherwise the tonearm will become unbalanced e

text_image Tone arm properly balanced Headshell Counterweight Headshell end is too heavy-Turn the counter weight in this direction of arrow. Counterweight end is heavy-Turn the counterweight the direction of the arrow.

Tracking Force Adjustment

Turning the counterweight, set the correct tracking force opposite the index line on the counterweight shaft. The tracking force scale ring has 0.5g steps and one full turn of the counterweight will yield a tracking force of 2.0g. You will need at least 3g. So turn the counterweight 1.5 times and stop by position 1.

Anti-Skating Adjustment

To adjust the Anti-skating mechanism, turn the “ANTI-SKATING” Knob so that the number corresponding to the required tracking force is opposite the index line. As a rule, the setting of the anti-skating function should correspond to that of the support weight of the needle (3 grams).
