3 Safety instructions

Danger
Electrical appliances may be dangerous if used incorrectly. Therefore, always observe the safety instructions summarised in this chapter and the safety regulations applicable in the respective country of use!
- Wear ear protectors during the use of impact drill drivers (machines with the designation ASB). Exposure to noise can cause loss of hearing.
- Make use of the additional handle supplied with the appliance. Loss of control may lead to injuries.
- Always hold the appliance by the insulated gripping surfaces when carrying out work during which the bit may hit concealed power lines. Contact with a live power line may also energize metal parts of the appliance, thus causing an electric shock.
- Convince yourself that no power, water or gas lines are located at the point where work is to be carried out (e.g. with the aid of a metal detector).
- Protect the rechargeable batteries from humidity!
- Do not throw the rechargeable batteries into a fire!
- Do not use any defective or deformed rechargeable batteries!
- Do not open the rechargeable batteries!
- Do not touch the contacts of the rechargeable batteries and do not short-circuit them!
- A slightly acidic, combustible liquid may leak from defective li-ion rechargeable batteries! If any battery liquid is leaking and comes in contact with the skin, immediately rinse with a copious amount of water. If any battery liquid gets into your eyes, rinse with clean water and immediately consult a doctor for medical treatment!
- Remove the rechargeable batteries from the machine before carrying out any setting, retooling, maintenance or cleaning tasks.
- Ensure that the machine is switched off when you push in the rechargeable battery.
- Dust originating from materials such as leaded paint, some types of wood, minerals and metal can be harmful to health. Touching or inhaling these
dusts can cause allergic reactions and/or respiratory disorders in the user or persons staying in the vicinity.
- Certain dusts such as oak or beech dust are considered as carcinogenic, especially in conjunction with additives for wood treatment (chromate, wood preservative). Asbestos-containing material may only be machined by specialists.
- As far as possible, make use of a dust extraction system.

Turn the setting wheel (13) to switch on the impulse function (button (5) flashes) or to switch on the torque control (button (5) glows constantly).
Press button (5) for maximum torque (drilling). The light in button (5) goes out.
To reactivate the setting wheel settings: Press button (5) again or turn the setting wheel (button (5) glows).
5.7 Switching on/off, setting the speed
(Fig. 1)
Switching on: Press the switch trigger (15). The speed at the switch trigger can be changed by the depth to which it is depressed.
Switching off: Release the switch trigger (15).

The noise that can be heard when the machine is switched off is due to the design (quick stop) and has no influence on function and life time of the machine.
5.8 Quick-release chuck
(Fig. 8)
In case of a soft tool shaft, it may be necessary to retension after a short drilling time.
Notes on ASB18 M bl and A18 M bl
- The ratchet sound that may be heard after opening the chuck (functional) is switched off by counter-rotating the sleeve.
Tensioning the bit: Turn the sleeve in direction "GRIP, CLOSED" until the perceptible mechanical resistance has been overcome. Caution! The tool is not yet tensioned! Continue turning forcefully (a "clicking" sound must be heard while doing so) until it is not
possible to turn any further - only now the tool is reliably tensioned.
Cleaning: Hold the machine occasionally with the quick-release chuck pointing vertically down and turn the sleeve completely in direction "GRIP, CLOSED" and then turn it completely in direction "OPEN, RELEASE". The collected dust drops out of the quick-release chuck.
5.9 Detaching the quick-release chuck
(Fig. 9)
Detaching: Pull the locking ring forward and pull off the chuck to the front.
Attaching: Pull the locking ring forward and push the chuck up to the limit stop onto the drilling spindle (if necessary, turn the chuck lightly to and fro).
5.10 Belt clip
(Fig. 10)
Detaching: Push together the belt clip on one side, so that you can swing it out of the rear opening. Once it has been unfastened from this opening, you can also unfasten it from the front opening.
Attaching: Proceed in the reverse order as described above. The belt clip can be attached on both sides.
5.11 Bit adapter
(Fig. 1)
A screw bit can be fitted in the bit adapter (7) on both sides.
5.12 LED light
(Fig. 1)
The LED light (14) is switched on by means of a movement sensor and switches off automatically when the machine has not been in use for a certain time.
5.13 Angle attachment
The angle attachment can be used to carry out screwing and drilling tasks at right angles to the screwdriver axle. It is possible to set angles at 22.5^ increments to the screwdriver axis.
Slide the angle attachment completely onto the machine until the components' profiles engage.
The adjusting screw (5) (Fig. 11) is used to adjust the clamping force: The clamping force is set correctly
when the clamping arm (4) can only be moved down to the limit stop with force and the angle attachment is firmly attached to the appliance.
Forcefully push the clamping arm (4) down to the limit stop, in this manner fastening the angle attachment on the machine (Fig. 11). Do not push the arm down forcefully before it has been slid onto the clamping neck. This could ruin the tight fit.

7 Troubleshooting

Danger
Determining the causes for existing defects and eliminating these always requires increased attention and caution.
To activate the electronic functions: Press the switch trigger (15).
If the machine switches off automatically, the electronic system has activated self-protection mode.
Despite this protective function, overload and as a consequence damage to the machine may occur during certain applications.
Some of the most frequent defects and their causes are listed in the following chart. In case of other defects, contact your dealer or the MAFELL customer service.
| Defect Cause Remedy | ||
| Rechargeable battery almost empty, an LED on the rechargeable battery is flashing. | Electronic system protects the rechargeable battery from deep discharge. | Check, press button 10. Fig. 1, 2, 3Only one LED is still glowing.Charge the rechargeable battery. |
| Overload, machine switches off. | A sustained load has overheated the machine or the rechargeable battery. A warning signal is sounded (constant bleeping). This sound stops after max. 30 seconds or when the switch trigger is released (15). | Allow the machine and the rechargeable battery to cool down. The rechargeable battery can be cooled down much faster with a charger with air cooling. The machine can also be cooled down much faster by using a different rechargeable battery and idling the machine. |
| The machine switches off at a sudden increase in load. | The sudden increase in load also causes the current that is required for the machine to rise. This rise in current, which occurs when there is a sudden blockage or backlash, is measured and then leads to the machine being switched off. | Switch off the machine by releasing the switch trigger (15).Afterwards, you can switch the machine back on again and resume work as normal.Try to avoid further blockages. |
