With your new Babyfon® you have purchased a quality product from Vivanco. Please read the instruction manual carefully to familiarise yourself with all the possibilities provided by your Babyfon and its correct operation. Babyfon® was developed to transfer voice signals / sounds made by children. Signal tones, e.g. from breathing or heart tone monitoring equipment, cannot be transferred. Use of the Babyfon® cannot replace, but only support the personal supervision of a child or person in need of care. Babyfon® points out that it does not accept any responsibility whatsoever not covered by legal guarantee regulations. This applies in particular to this Babyfon® being used for medical purposes for which it is not intended. As a quality product, Babyfon® naturally meets all national and European licence requirements. N.B. This Vivanco FM product complies with the European R&TTE Directive for FM systems in non-harmonised frequency ranges. The sale and operation of these systems is possible in the following countries: D, GB, F, E , I, NL, DK, B, LUX, P, FIN, S. In non-EU member states the national licence regulations must be observed. Electro-smog in children’s rooms Due to the extremely low radiation level of 10mW (maximum), there is no risk to the health of your child due to electro-smog, according to current knowledge. We nevertheless recommend that you keep a safety distance of 1 metre between your baby and the Babyfon® transmitter. Never place the device in the child’s cot or playpen. The functionality of the Babyfon® is not impaired in any way by the safety distance. The original Babyfon® is equipped with a voice control feature that only allows the device to transmit when your child really makes a noise. Therefore the Babyfon® only transmits when required and not permanently, preventing superfluous electro-smog. When using AC adapters you can minimise low-frequency magnetic fields by keeping a distance of at least 1 metre between the wall socket (230V/50Hz) and the child’s cot. If you wish to minimise electro-smog further in the child’s room it is recommended to operate the Babyfon® using batteries/battery packs in the transmitter and receiver. This ensures that there will be no risk of electro- smog from the Babyfon® for your child. Besides performing its basic function, your Babyfon® BM 400 also has the following features:
- Variable response sensitivity In order to ensure optimal adaptation to your everyday life / surrounding noise you can determine the switch-on threshold of the Babyfon®. Depending on your individual requirements, the transmitter can be activated either by slight noises or from a certain volume level.
- Belt clip / wall mounting The transmitter and receiver are fitted with a practical belt clip. Using a screw or hook you can also use the belt clip as a practical wall mounting.
- 40 MHz/ 2 transmission channels Interference by CB transmitters is impossible due to the 40 MHz frequency range used.
- Pilot signal technology To prevent interference, the Babyfon® transmitter emits an inaudible, coded signal as soon as it is activated. Only when this signal is received does the receiver switch itself on, thereby preventing the reception of external radio transmissions. This makes interference from, for example, other baby monitoring systems almost impossible. Should interference come from an equivalent model you can also change the pilot signal in the battery compartments of the transmitter and the receiver.
- Acoustic range control An acoustic signal (beep tone) tells you when the receiver is outside the range of the transmitter. N.B.: When the receiver is switched on the beep tone sounds for a few seconds. This stops as soon as the transmitter and receiver make contact.
- Variable transmission output If the transmitter and receiver are used mainly in stationary operation (child’s room > living room) the transmission output of the Babyfon® can be reduced. This considerably reduces any possible electro-smog (from the transmitter) to the benefit of your child. Neither the functionality nor reliability of the Babyfon® is reduced! Protect your child from unnecessary electro-smog.
- Battery pack charge function The transmitter and receiver are equipped with an integrated battery pack charge function for the safe charging of your battery packs. GB9
- Battery status indicator In order to increase the functional efficiency of the Babyfon®, the „Power“ lamp begins to flash on the transmitter and/or receiver if the battery/battery pack voltage can no longer guarantee safe operation. The receiver then also emits a warning tone.

1. Putting into operation with an AC adapter:
1. Connect the power supply cable to the socket provided (A1) on the back of the transmitter, then plug the AC adapter into the wall socket (230 V / 50 Hz). Place the transmitter at least 1 metre from the person to be monitored (see electro-smog info). 2. Check the channel selection switch (A4). The transmitter and receiver must be set to the same channel („A“ or „B“), otherwise transmission cannot take place. 3. Now switch on the transmitter (A2). The power-on lamp (A3) lights up red, indicating that the transmitter is ready to operate. 4. You can increase the preset sensitivity (from which the transmitter is activated) using the control (A6) and adapt it to your requirements. 5. Now set the transmission output to your requirements. If the Babyfon® is used mainly in stationary operation (transmitter in child’s room > receiver in living room) we recommend switch position „S“ (small transmission output). For mobile use we recommend switch position „L“ (large transmission output). Only in switch position „L“ can the range indicated be reached in optimal conditions.
6. The transmitter (A) is now ready to operate.
(B) Receiver 1. Connect the power supply cable to the socket provided (B1) on the back of the receiver, then plug the AC adapter into the wall socket (230 V / 50 Hz)). 2. Check the channel selection switch (B6). The transmitter and receiver must be set to the same channel („A“ or „B“), otherwise transmission cannot take place. 3. Now switch on the receiver (B3). The power-on lamp (B4) lights up red, indicating that the receiver is ready to operate. 4. To ensure functionality, the minimum volume is preset to approx. ⁄ of the maximum volume. You can increase the volume to your requirements.
2. Putting into operation with batteries/battery packs:
The BM 400 has an integrated battery pack charge function for the transmitter and receiver. This automatic charge function is activated when the battery compartment contains battery packs. N.B.: If y ou wish to use batteries, the transmitter or receiver must not be connected via the AC adapter! This will damage the units!10
1. Open the battery compartment (A5) by simply sliding the battery compartment lid as indicated by the arrow.
2. Insert the 3 AA battery packs (or batteries) in the battery compartment in accordance with the markings. Then close the battery compartment.
3. Then proceed as described above (Putting into operation with an AC adapter, points 3 to 5, Transmitter).

In view of the physical diffusion characteristics of radio waves, you should determine the range of your Babyfon® in your surroundings. In optimal conditions, the range is up to 300 metres. However, the actual range depends very much on local conditions (e.g. location of the transmitter, type of building or atmospheric conditions). The range may also be reduced if you enclose the receiver in your hands. For mobile use it is therefore recommended to use the belt clip. However, you should be able to move around freely within the house/apartment with your Babyfon®. You can easily ascertain the range in your surroundings by placing a radio in front of the Babyfon® transmitter. When you can hear the transmission, take the receiver to the area where you require perfect functionality.
5. Channel selection
With your Babyfon® BM 400 the signal can be transmitted via two channels („A“ or „B“). If the sound reception is very poor, try the other channel: switch both the channel selection switch (A4) on the transmitter and the channel selection switch (B6) on the receiver to the other channel. Make sure that the channel selection switches on the transmitter and receiver are both in the same position. Only then can transmission take place.
6. Sensitivity / volume
You can set the response sensitivity of the transmitter and the volume of the receiver of your Babyfon® BM 400: turn the sensitivity control (A6) on the transmitter to the required microphone response sensitivity. The higher the sensitivity is set, the sooner the transmitter starts to transmit when your baby makes a sound. You can also regulate the volume of the signals received using the volume control (B5) of the receiver according to your surroundings.11
rouble-shooting Problem: Solution: No function 1. Check the power supply (battery pack/AC adapter) of the transmitter and receiver. No transmission 1. Reduce the distance between the transmitter and the baby, maintaining the minimum distance of 1 metre, or increase the response sensitivity (A6).
2. Reduce the distance between the transmitter and the receiver.
3. Check the setting of the channel selector switches (both on „A“ or „B“).
Interference/poor transmission: 1. Select a different transmission/reception channel.
2. Reduce the distance between the transmitter and the receiver.
3. Check the batteries/battery packs and replace if necessary.
Whistling (feedback): 1. Increase the distance between the transmitter and the receiver.
2. Reduce the volume on the receiver.
External reception: 1. Switch to the other channel.
2. Vary the pilot signal on the transmitter and receiver.
