5 GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS
Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow all warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery operated (cordless) power tool.
5.1 Work area
- Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents.
- Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
- Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
5.2 Electrical safety

Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.
- Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
- Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
- Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
- Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
- When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
- If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
5.3 Personal safety
- Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
- Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used whenever conditions require will reduce personal injuries.
- Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before plugging in. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
- Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
- Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
- Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
- If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of these devices can reduce dust related hazards.
5.4 Power tool use and care
- Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
- Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
- Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
- Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
- Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or sticking of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
- Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to stick and are easier to control.
- Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of power tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from intended could lead to a hazardous situation.
5.5 Service
- Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
6 SPECIFIC SAFETY WARNINGS
Use this machine only for its purpose, as designated in this manual: bow welding with electrodes.
Unproper use of this machine may cause harm to people, animals or property.
The user is responsible for his own safety as well as the safety of people in his surrounding.
■ Repair should only be done by authorized/qualified personnel.
- Only the provided/included welding cables must be used (Ø10mm² section rubber cable)
- Maintenance must be done on a regular bases.
■ While working, keep the welder free from all debris, do not put it against a wall, so ventilation is guaranteed at all times.
- Pull socket from mains before moving the welder.
- Check condition of welding cables, electrode clamp, earth clamp regularly. Damaged insulation can cause harm and can diminish quality of welding.
- Bow welding produces sparks, melted metal particles and smoke. So be very cautious and remove all combustible fluids/materials from your working area.
■ Make sure air supply is sufficient.
- Never weld bottles, barrels or tubes that contained inflammable liquids or gasses. Avoid every contact with the welding current circuit: the no-load voltage that may occur between the electrode clamp and the earth clamp may be dangerous.
- Never store or use the welder in a moist environment or in the rain.
- Protect your eyes with appropriate safety goggles (DIN degree 9-10) that you put in the enclosed safety cap. Wear gloves and dry protective clothing, free of oil and grease, to protect your skin from UV light.

CAUTION ! De UV light from the welding bow can damage your eyes or burn your skin.
- Bow welding produces sparks en drops of melted metal. The welded surface remains hot for quite a while.
- Vapors may occur that can be harmful to your health. Electrical shock can be lethal.
- Don't come any closer than a radius of 15m from the light bow without protection.
- Protect yourself and the people around you from the harmful affects of the light bow.
- Caution: depending on the main circuit, it may occur that other users may experience disturbances. In case of doubt please contact your power company.
6.1 Precautions.
- Leave adaptations to the main circuit, sockets, cables etc to qualified personnel, in particular extension cables.
- When accident occurs: cut welder immediately from mains.
- If electrical contact voltages occur, shut the welder down and contact qualified person to check welder.
■ Welding current: always make sure electrical contacts are impeccable. - Always ware insulating gloves on both hands for protection against: electrical shock, UV radiation, melted metal, sparks etc.
- Ware solid, insulating (also in moist environment) shoes. Falling drops of melted metal can result in severe burnings.
- Ware appropriate clothing: no synthetic fibers!
- Never look into the welding bow without protection! (Only with appropriate safety goggles) UV radiation can cause severe damage to your eyes and skin (blinding, burning) that only appear after several hours (ref sunburn)
■ All above is also valid for people in your surrounding.
■ Make sure air supply is sufficient, especially in small rooms. - Never weld bottles, barrels or tubes that contained inflammable liquids or gasses, even after a long time residues can cause explosions.
- In an environment with fire / explosion caution, more strict prescriptions are valid.
- Welds that have to bear heavy tension or meet specific safety expectations must be made by qualified welders.
- Remark: always make sure you connect the earth clamp to proper earth. In case you don't, severe damage may occur to main grounding or machine itself (melting of ground wire).
- Mains socket must be secured with proper (automatic) fuses. (According to section of wire, a standard socket with earth should have a 16A fuse) Using higher fuses may result in burning of the wires and result in fire in the building.
6.2 Small and moist rooms.
When you use your welder in small or moist rooms you have to use extra insulation layers, use high quality insulating gloves, leather or other very bad conducting material, to protect your body. In extreme situation the output voltage may not be higher than 48V.
6.3 Protective gear
- While performing work, the entire body of the welder must be protected with clothing and facial protection gear against radiation (burns).
- Welding gloves made of a suitable material (leather) must be worn on both hands. These must be in perfect condition.
- In order to protect clothing/skin from flying sparks and burns, appropriate aprons must be worn. If the nature of the work, e.g. overhand welding, requires it, a protective suit as well as a safety helmet must be worn.
6.4 Protection against radiation and burns through :
- signs placed in the workplace warning about danger to eyes: a sign reading “Caution, do not look into flames!” The workplace must be closed off as completely as possible so that people in the vicinity are sufficiently protected. Unauthorized people must be kept away from the welding area.
- the walls in the immediate vicinity of permanent welding areas should not have a light colour or glossy finish, windows must be treated up to at least eye-level to protect against light transfer or reflection, e.g. by applying a suitable layer of paint.
7 OPERATION
7.1 Preparation.
The earth clamp (2) must be connected to the work piece or to the ground the work piece is standing on.
Caution :
■ make sure there is direct contact with the work piece. Avoid painted or insulated surfaces.
- The welding cable is provided with a special clamp to hold the electrode.
- Always wear the protective cap, it protects you and allows looking at the weld.
7.2 Welding.
After making all proper connections you can proceed as follows:
- put the bare end of the welding electrode in the clamp (1) and connect the earth clamp (2) to the work piece.
- Switch the welder on (4) and choose the welding current by turning the hand wheel (3), depending on electrode ∅ you will use.
- Hold the protective cap before your face and wrap the electrode over the work piece, like lighting a match. This is the best way to light the bow. Test on a trial piece first to check wither you have selected proper electrode/current.
| Electrode ∅ (mm) | Welding current. (A) |
| 2.0 | 50 - 70 |
| 2.5 | 70 – 100 |
| 3.2 | 100 – 130 |
| 4.0 | 130 - 160 |
Caution! Do not tick against work piece; this could cause damage and hamper the lighting of the bow. As soon as the bow lights, try to maintain the correct distance to the work piece (corresponding to used electrode). The angle to your work piece should be 60-80°.
Caution! Always use pliers to remove used electrodes or to replace your work piece. Always remember that the electrode clamp (1) must be put aside on an insulated surface! The slag must only be removed after cooling down. When a weld is continued after stopping, the slag at the end of it should first be removed.
WARNING: Do not use the welding power source for pipe thawing.
| Current range in different duty cycle. | |||
