TIPS FOR A PERFECT ESPRESSO

If the espresso you made does not come up to your expectations, check the factors listed below and adjust your preparation accordingly. When doing so, assess the factors one at a time so that you can judge the outcome adequately.

Water

  1. U sceleart ap water.
  2. Distilled water and mineral water are not suitable.
  3. Heavily calciferous water can have a negative impact on the quality of the finished espresso.
  4. If the tap water you are using is heavily calciferous, you can therefore also use carbonated water with a low mineral content.
  5. For quality reasons, please refrain from using warmed-up water and always use water with tap water temperature.
  6. The water in the water tank must be changed regularly for sanitary reasons. We recommend refreshing the water on a daily basis.

  7. The water tank must be emptied at any rate when the appliance is not used for an extended period to keep lime scale and algae from forming in the appliance.

Coffee beans and powder

  1. You will achieve a particularly rich aroma if grinding the coffee beans immediately prior to brewing. Ground coffee loses its aroma quickly. Nevertheless, you should not store coffee beans longer than two to three weeks in order to avoid degraded quality.
  2. You should therefore store both ground coffee and coffee beans in a cool and airtight environment. Tip: The best way to preserve the aroma is to store the powder or the beans in a vacuum-sealed container.
  3. If using fully ground coffee powder, make sure the powder is suitable for espresso machines. You will find a corresponding notice on the packaging.

Fineness

  1. The strength of the espresso depends on the grind, the amount of powder in the portafilter, water quantity and the pressure used during preparation.
  2. You may have to start by determining the coarseness of the grind that fits your liking best. When grinding your own beans, experiment with the coarseness or try a different coffee powder.

Proper fill level

  1. Never tamp the coffee powder in the measuring scoop as the quantity will otherwise be incorrect. The coffee powder is only tamped with the tamper after it has been placed in the portafilter.
  2. If tamping very firmly, you will increase the preparation time and make an espresso that is very strong. Conversely, if you tamp very lightly, the preparation time will be shorter and the espresso will be lighter.
  3. Make sure that the surface of the coffee powder is as level as possible to allow the water to flow evenly through the entire powder.
  4. If the espresso takes too long, the coffee powder may be too fine or tamped too firmly, resulting in clogging of the screen pores.

Milk for milk froth

  1. Use only suitable receptacles. Please do not use glass receptacles – even if made of heat-resistant glass. Glass can burst on account of the highly concentrated heat, causing severe injuries.
  2. It is best to use cold low-fat milk.

  3. If the milk froth is not satisfactory, check if the steam nozzle is completely free of any residue and clean it if necessary.

  4. Always use milk froth immediately as it will collapse again if stored too long.

RECIPIDEAS

Cappuccino - the Italian classic

It is made with 1/3 Espresso, 1/3 hot milk and 1/3 frothed milk. You can also sprinkle it with, for instance, cocoa powder.

Caffé latte

Known in France as café au lait, this beverage literally translates to coffee with milk. It is made with espresso as well. Add the desired amount of heated milk and, if you like, "top off" the drink with a dollop of frothed milk.

Latte macchiato

A well-made latte macchiato is made up of multiple layers. Start with the milk and pour espresso, hot milk and milk froth in an alternating pattern into a tall drinking glass. Always let the layer of frothed milk settle a bit before adding the espresso. This keeps the layers from blending into each other. Make sure the espresso is hot. If you would like to flavour the beverage, e.g. with syrup or liqueur, add these ingredients only to the hot milk and not the espresso, as this would cause the espresso to sink too quickly.

Mochaccino

Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of chocolate syrup to a glass and pour the slightly cooled milk froth on top. Carefully top off with espresso. Finish by topping the drink off with a dome of frothed milk or whipped cream and garnish it with grated chocolate or cocoa powder.

iced coffee

Pour strong, cold coffee into a tall glass. Next, add one or two scoops of vanilla ice cream to each glass and top the glass off with cold frothed milk. Garnish with grated chocolate if desired.

Use of frothed milk

Frothed milk is not only ideal for adding the finishing touch to speciality coffees. Did you know, for instance, that you can also substitute whipped cream for frothed milk when creating scrumptious desserts? This ingredient will help you create delicacies that are wonderfully creamy and easy to digest at the same time. For instance, you might want to pour hot frothed milk over strawberries or your morning cereal.

A dome of frothed milk also adds a special note to such dishes as cream soups. You will find plenty more recipe ideas in cookbooks or on the Internet.
