Frequently Asked Questions - NS2000A YAMAHA

How to install the NS2000A speakers?

Place the speakers on a stable and level surface. Use the adjustable feet to level and stabilize. Optionally, mount the supplied spikes by screwing them under the speaker to improve stability on carpet. Ensure two people carry the speaker (34.6 kg).

How to mount the front grille?

The grille is magnetic: align the curved part of the grille with the curvature of the top of the speaker. Make sure it is securely attached. Do not touch the diaphragms and do not press on the grille fabric.

Can I use these speakers near a TV?

The NS2000A speakers are not magnetically shielded. Keep them at least 50 cm away from a CRT television to avoid color distortion. LCD/OLED TVs are not affected.

Which amplifier should I choose for these speakers?

Choose an amplifier whose nominal output power is within the speaker's allowable power range (60 W nominal, 200 W max). Ensure the amplifier's impedance is compatible with 6 Ω. Avoid exceeding the maximum power to prevent damage to the speakers.

How to connect the speaker cables?

Strip about 10 mm of wire at each end. Unscrew the terminals, insert the stripped part into the hole (6 mm diameter) and retighten firmly. Observe polarity: red (+), black (-). For banana plugs, first unscrew the terminal then insert the plug.

What to do in case of condensation on the speaker?

Wipe the surface immediately with a soft dry cloth. Condensation can damage the wooden components. Avoid sudden changes in temperature or humidity.

Can I touch the speakers?

Never touch the diaphragms (suspension and cone) as they are delicate. Any pressure can deform them and degrade sound quality. Visible spruce fibers on the diaphragms are normal.

How to clean the speakers?

Use a soft dry cloth. Never use chemicals (benzene, thinner) or impregnated cloths as they may discolor or deform the cabinet. For the grille, dust gently.

What are the recommended equalization settings?

Avoid pushing tone controls (Bass/Treble) or equalizer to extremes as this could damage the speakers. Use moderate settings for balanced sound.

What to do in case of anomaly (smell, smoke, abnormal sound)?

Immediately turn off all amplifiers and receivers. Disconnect the speakers and contact a qualified Yamaha technician. Do not use the device until it has been inspected.

If you notice any abnormality

• If any of the following abnormalities occur, immediately turn off any amplifiers and receivers.
• An unusual smell, unusual sound or smoke is emitted from the unit.
  – Foreign material or water gets into the interior of the unit.

  – There is a crack or damage in the unit.

Installation

• Assemble and install in the manner instructed in the manual. Falling or toppling may result in injury or damage.

Installation

• Keep small parts out of the reach of infants. Your children may accidentally swallow them.
• Do not do the following:
• Stand on or sit on the equipment.
• Put heavy items on top of the equipment.
• Apply unreasonable force input terminals, etc.
  – Lean against the equipment.
  Failure to observe this may cause injuries or damage to the equipment.
• Avoid pulling the connected cables to prevent injuries or damage to the unit by causing it to fall.
• Do not operate the unit if the sound is distorting. Prolonged use in this condition could cause overheating and result in fire.
• When selecting an amplifier or a receiver to use with this unit, check that the output level on the amplifier or receiver is within this unit's permitted input level (see page 10). If the output power is higher than the power capacity, malfunction or fire may occur.

If water droplets are left on the unit, they may be absorbed into the wooden parts, causing deformation. - When cleaning the unit, use a dry, soft cloth. Using chemicals such as benzine or thinner, cleaning agents, or chemical scrubbing cloths can cause discoloration or deformation.

Speakers

- Do not touch the diaphragm. Failure to observe this may damage the diaphragm.

This unit's speakers use magnets. Do not place items that are sensitive to magnetism, such as CRT-type TVs, clocks, credit cards, floppy disks, etc., on or beside this unit.

Information

About functions included in the unit

- The speakers do not have a distinction between left and right. - Air may be blown out from the bass reflex port. This is not a malfunction. This occurs particularly often when outputting music with heavy bass.

CAUTION

Unpacking and carrying the unit require two or more people.

Otherwise, the unit may fall or tip over, causing injuries.

NOTICE

• Be sure not to touch the diaphragms on the front. Otherwise, they may be damaged.
• This unit is designed with a non-magnetic shield. Placing this unit too close to a CRT TV may cause color distortions or other interference. In that case, move the speakers away from the TV.

■ Using as 2ch stereo speakers

Better stereo images will be obtained when the speakers are slightly angled in towards the listener.

■ Adjusting the feet

Tighten (To lower) Foot Loosen (To raise)

This unit ships from the factory with feet attached to the bottom.

The feet can be adjusted. By finely adjusting the height of the unit, wobbling can be prevented at the setup location. Be careful since loosening a foot too much may cause it to fall off, resulting in the unit tipping over.

■ Using this unit with the included spikes

When setting up this unit on a thick carpet, etc., installing the included spikes can improve stability and sound quality. In that case, install the spikes as follows.

CAUTION

- Setting up and moving the unit require two or more people. Otherwise, the unit may fall or tip over, causing injuries.

1 Place the speaker on the floor with its rear side down.

Spread out blankets or cushions to prevent scratches.

2 Loosen the foot to remove it, and then screw the spike into the screw hole for the foot.

3 After installing the four spikes, place the speaker at the setup location.

If the unit is wobbling, turn the spikes and adjust them so the unit does not wobble.

CAUTION

- Be careful since loosening a spike too much may cause it to fall off.

- Tilting the unit to set it up requires two or more people so that it does not tip over. Otherwise, the unit may tip over, causing injuries or damage.

NOTICE

- Allowing the tips of the spikes to drag may scratch the floor. Be careful when installing or moving the speaker.

- When the spikes are installed, be careful not to scratch the floor.

- Due to the weight of the unit, marks may be left on the floor or carpet.

Diaphragm Surround

NOTE

• The diaphragms of all tweeter, midrange and woofers of this unit include a natural material called spruce. Therefore, fibers and chips in the material may be visible on the surface of the diaphragm. Since these are not defects but common for this natural material, they do not affect the quality.
• The specific type of rubber used for the surround supporting the woofer diaphragm was carefully chosen to optimize the sound quality. In rare cases, this rubber may turn an off-white color. Such rubber bloom is not cause for concern but merely the result of a rubber component surfacing, which does not adversely affect performance.

Attaching the grille

This unit and the grille are packed separately. The back of the grille is fitted with a magnet. The grille can be attached by aligning its curved section with the curved surface at the top on the front of this unit.

NOTICE

• Make sure that the grille is securely attached to this unit. If it comes off the unit due to vibrations, etc., it may cause damage or malfunctions.
• Do not touch or apply excessive force to any diaphragms on the front. Otherwise, the sound may be distorted, or malfunctions may result.
• Do not press or apply excessive force to the speaker grill cloth. Otherwise, it may be damaged.
• There are magnets on the back of the grille for this unit. Keep the removed grille away from objects (CRT TVs, watches, magnetic cards, etc.) that may be affected by magnets.

Connecting to your amplifier

Before making connections, make sure that the amplifier is turned off.

■ Connections

Twist off a section of insulation from each end of the cables.

Provide commercially available speaker cable.

The thickness and/or material of the speaker cable affects the sound quality. We recommend purchasing high-quality speaker cable to maximize this unit's performance.

■ Connecting the speaker cables

1 Turn the input terminal knobs on the rear of this unit counterclockwise to loosen them.

CAUTION

- If an input terminal knob is completely loosened, it will fall off. Keep the removed knobs out of the reach of infants to prevent accidental ingestion.

2 Insert the bare wire section into the hole in the input terminal.

NOTE

• Diameter of hole in terminal for inserting speaker cable: 6.0 mm (1/4")
• Do not insert the cable insulation into the hole. Otherwise, sound may not be produced.

3 Turn the input terminal knobs clockwise to tighten them and secure the cables.

Make sure that the wire core does not protrude from the hole.

4 Connect the speaker cables to the L (left) and R (right) speaker terminals on the amplifier.

NOTE

• The red terminal of this unit is positive (+), and the black terminal is negative (−).
• If a speaker is connected with reversed polarity, the sound will be unnatural.

NOTICE

• Be careful not to allow the bare wires of the positive (+) and negative (−) speaker cables to come into contact with each other or other metal parts. Otherwise, the speakers may be damaged.
• Affix the speaker cables to a wall, etc. Otherwise, hands or feet may be caught on the cables, causing the unit to tip over.
• Since the speakers may be damaged if an equalizer or tone controls of an amplifier (BASS, TREBLE, etc.) are set to maximum and output at a high volume level, or if certain signals (sounds from a tape fast-forwarding or a turntable stylus touching the surface of a disc, specific frequencies from a signal generator and sine waves or similar signals) are continuously input, avoid such conditions.

NOTE

• When using an amplifier with a rated output power higher than the nominal input power of the speaker, take care never to surpass the speaker's maximum input.
• Refer to the owner's manual that came with your amplifier or receiver.

■ When using a banana plug
