Battery Charge Level
The Battery has a built-in Battery Charge Indicator (11). Pressing on the button to the right will indicate the charge level. The number of bars that illuminate when the button is pressed indicate the charge level; 1 bar indicating a low charge, 3 bars indicating a full charge.
IMPORTANT: When a low charge level is indicated be aware the tool may stop operating while in use. This may be dangerous. It is recommended to always ensure the Battery has a good charge level.
Notes about battery charging
IMPORTANT: Batteries are an expendable supply whose capacity shortens over time. Always adhere to the correct handling and charging instructions in the manual. If the battery does not hold charge or working time is shortened, purchase a genuine Silverline replacement.
The Battery (12) should be charged at ambient temperatures between 10^ and 40^ (ideally around 20^ )
After charging, allow 15 minutes for the battery to cool before use
- Ensure the charger is disconnected from the mains supply after use, and is stored correctly
- Do not leave batteries on charge for extended periods and never store batteries on charge
- The Battery Charger (16) monitors battery temperature and voltage while charging. Remove the Battery once charging has been completed to maximise charge cycles of the battery and not waste power
- Batteries can become faulty over time, individual cells in the battery can fail, and the battery could short. The charger will not charge faulty batteries. Use another battery, if possible, to check correct functionality of the charger and purchase a replacement battery if a faulty battery is indicated
- Do not store Lithium ion battery packs in a discharged state long term. This can damage the Lithium-ion cells. For long-term storage, store batteries in a high charge state disconnected from the power tool
- The capacity of batteries will reduce over time. After 100 charge cycles, the battery's operation time and the performance will slightly reduce. This decline will continue until the battery has minimal capacity after 500 charge cycles. This is normal and not a fault with the battery pack
Fitting drill bits & accessories
WARNING: Always remove the Battery from the drill before attaching, adjusting or removing accessories.
WARNING: Do not attempt to tighten drill bits (or any other accessory) by gripping the Chuck Collar (2) and switching the tool ON. This can lead to personal injury and can cause damage to the chuck.
WARNING: Never fit anyattachment with a maximum speed lower than the no-load speed of the power tool or selected gear.
- Open the Chuck Jaws (1) by rotating the Chuck Collar anti-clockwise (with the Chuck facing the operator)
- Place the drill bit or accessory centrally into the Chuck Jaws
- Tighten the Chuck Jaws by rotating the Chuck Collar clockwise
- When the drill bit or accessory is securely fastened, carefully run the tool to test that it is running centrally, smoothly and evenly. If the bit is 'wobbling' or not running centrally, release the Chuck Jaws, check the accessory for damage, correct its position, relighten and test again
Operation
Direction control
WARNING: NEVER change the direction of rotation while the tool is running.
The direction of rotation can be set using the Forward/Reverse Switch (8)
- For anti-clockwise rotation, holding the drill in a normal operating position, push the switch to the right
- For clockwise rotation, push the switch to the left
Note: When the Forward/Reverse Switch is in the central position, the drill is locked and cannot be switched ON. Use this setting as a safety feature to prevent the drill from being switched ON accidentally.
Speed control
- This drill features a 2-speed gearbox:
1st gear range: 0 - 400/min
2nd gear range: 0-1350/min - Use the Gear Selector (5) to set the gear: back for first gear, forward for second gear
Note: The first gear would be used normally for driving screws, for example, and offers higher torque and superior control at low rpm. The second gear would normally be used exclusively for drilling.
Drill mode selection
- For normal drilling, select the correct gear which is normally the high speed 2nd gear, then rotate the Mode Selector (4) so the drill symbol is aligned with the indicator on the tool body
- For masonry drilling, select the correct gear which is normally the high speed 2nd gear, then rotate the Mode Selector so the hammer symbol is aligned with the indicator on the tool body
Torque control
- This drill driver is fitted with torque control, which limits the torque output of the drill, enabling screws to be driven without the risk of damage
- There are 18 torque settings and two drill settings. The lower the number, the lower the torque
- To set the torque clutch, select the first gear and rotate the Mode Selector (4) so the drive symbol is aligned with the indicator on the tool body
- Rotate the Torque Selector (3) until the required setting is aligned with the drive symbol
- Check the torque setting is correct by practising first on a piece of scrap material
WARNING: The drill can be fitted with a drive adaptor for use with driving nuts and bolts. DO NOT attempt to use this tool in the drill position when doing so. Use the 18 torque settings and the first gear to allow the torque clutch to protect the tool from excessive loosen or tighten a nut/bolt is recommended. This allows the tool to speed up the operation without risk of damage when high torque is required at the beginning or end of the operation.
Switching ON & OFF
WARNING: Always wear adequate personal protection equipment when setting up and operating this tool.
- To start the drill, squeeze the ON/OFF Trigger Switch (15)
Note: If the ON/OFF Trigger Switch cannot be pressed down, check that the Forward/Reverse Switch (8) is not set to its middle position, which locks the device (see 'Direction control'). -
The speed of the drill is controlled by the movement of the trigger: the further the trigger is pressed down, the faster the drill will run
-
Release the ON/OFF Trigger Switch to stop the tool
Note: A built-in LED Work Light (14) will operate each time the ON/OFF Trigger Switch is pressed to illuminate the work area.
Note: The On-Tool Battery Indicator (7) will operate each time the ON/OFF Trigger Switch is pressed. The number of bars that illuminate when the button is pressed indicate the charge level; 1 bar indicating a low charge, 3 bars indicating a full charge.
Screwdriver use
Note: Use a universal bit holder (not supplied) when working with screwdriver bits. Only mount screwdriver bits directly into the chuck if it is essential to access a screw head. Use a bit holder at all other times.
- When driving screws NEVER use the tool in drill mode. This will protect the motor by causing the clutch to slip rather than the motor to stall when the screw is fully inserted in the workpiece and cannot rotate any further
- Always adjust the drill to the appropriate torque setting (see 'Drill mode selection' & 'Torque control')
Note: If in doubt about which torque setting best suits the application, start with a low setting and increase, should more torque be required (e.g. if the screw is not being driven far enough into the workpiece).
Drilling wood
WARNING: The dust produced from working with some materials can be toxic. Beech, oak, mahogany and teak natural woods, man-made composite woods and some surface treatments, including paint with lead, are toxic. Lead-based paint is common in buildings built before 1960. Always wear suitable respiratory protection; for example, a respirator face mask. Use a dust extraction system or regularly vacuum the work area to prevent the build-up of dust. In addition, vacuum the work area after the work has been completed. Most dust is surfaces have an increased safety risk for dust.
- Select drill mode with the Mode Selector (4) and the required gear (typically 2nd gear)
- Ensure the drill bits are suitable for wood and are within the maximum capacity of this power tool (see 'Specification')
Drilling metal
- Select drill mode with the Mode Selector (4) and the required gear (typically 2nd gear)
- Ensure the drill bits are suitable for the grade of metal being drilled and are within the maximum capacity of the tool (see 'Specification')
To ensure accuracy, mark the intended hole position using a hammer and centre punch
WARNING: The drill bit and the workpiece will become very hot when drilling metal. DO NOT touch the bit and never allow it to come into contact with combustible materials when hot.
Always use a suitable lubricant or cutting fluid and drill at appropriate speeds.
- Only apply moderate pressure to the drill bit, ensuring efficient cutting and prolonged drill bit life
- Use a countersink bit to remove sharp burrs from the hole, preventing cuts and other kinds of injury
Drilling masonry
- Select hammer drill mode with the Mode Selector (4) and the required gear (typically 2nd gear)
- Always use a masonry drill bit, preferably a TCT masonry bit, when drilling into walls, stone or concrete
DO NOT apply too much pressure to the back of the tool. If debris blocks the drill hole, run the drill slowly and remove the bit from the hole. Repeat until the hole is clear of debris and continue
