Frequently Asked Questions - Premium 521 VSH AL-KO

How to start the engine of the Premium 521 VSH lawn mower?
To start, first check the fuel and oil levels. Set the throttle to the max position if available (depending on model). Press the primer bulb 3 times (5 times if <10°C). Pull the safety bar up and hold it. Pull the starter cord quickly then let it rewind slowly. To stop, release the safety bar.
How to adjust the cutting height?
Adjustment must only be done with the engine off and blade stopped. Push the unlocking lever to the side and move the lever left or right to select the desired height. Make sure all wheels are on the same notch.
How to install the mulching kit?
With the engine off and blade stopped, remove the grass catcher. Lift the deflector flap and insert the mulching kit into the discharge opening until it clicks into place. To remove, unlock the locking mechanism and pull it out.
How to empty the grass catcher?
Lift the deflector flap, unhook the catcher and pull it back. Empty it, then put it back by lifting the flap again and hooking it into the supports. The fill level indicator tells you when it is full.
Which engine oil to use and how much?
Use the engine oil recommended by the engine manufacturer (see instructions). The filling amount is approximately 0.6 liters. Refill when the engine is cold and in a well-ventilated area.
What to do if the engine does not start?
Check the fuel level, set the throttle to Start, operate the starter, push the engine drive control towards the handlebar. Check the spark plug, clean the air filter, ensure the blade turns freely. If electric start, recharge the battery. Try starting on an area already mown.
How to activate the wheel drive?
The wheel drive (optional) is activated with the engine running. Press the drive control bar against the upper part of the handlebar and hold it. To deactivate, release the bar. For the Vario transmission, pull the lever to increase or decrease speed.
How to maintain the cutting blade?
Before any intervention, stop the engine and remove the spark plug cap. Wear gloves. Have the blade sharpened or replaced by an authorized center if dull or damaged. Regularly check the blade balance after sharpening.
How to store the lawn mower in winter?
Let the engine cool down. Drain the fuel tank and remove the spark plug cap. Store it in a dry, frost-free place, out of reach of children. For the starting battery (if present), store it frost-free.
What are the important safety instructions?
Read the instruction manual before use. Wear appropriate clothing (long trousers, sturdy shoes, hearing protection). Keep bystanders away. Do not mow on slopes >20° and always across the slope. Stop the engine before leaving the machine, unclogging or cleaning. Never use without protective devices (catcher, deflector, etc.).

Why is the transmission of my AL-KO Premium 521 VSH mower not working anymore?
Frequently Asked Questions - 25/05/2026
Response Notice-Facile

First of all, make sure that the engine is running and functioning properly. The wheel transmission of your AL-KO Premium 521 VSH can only be activated or deactivated when the engine is running. If you have no movement of the wheels despite the engine being on, there are several possible causes to check.

Checks and common causes:

  • Incorrectly used control bar: Make sure to press the transmission control bar against the top of the handlebar and hold it to activate. Upon release, the transmission deactivates. If this is not the cause, proceed with the diagnostics below.
  • Misadjusted Bowden cable: This is the most common cause. If you cannot activate or deactivate the transmission with the engine running, the Bowden cable probably needs to be adjusted. With the engine off, turn the adjustment mechanism on the Bowden cable (located near the control bar) in the direction indicated by the arrow. Then start the engine and check that the transmission activates properly.
  • Debris or dirt: Check for any grass clippings, debris, or small twigs stuck around the toothed belt or drive sprocket. If you find any, remove them along with the toothed belt and the transmission for cleaning.
  • Worn or damaged V-belt: Visually inspect the transmission belt (visible under the mower) for cracks, significant wear, or signs of slipping. A damaged belt must be replaced.
  • Loose wheel screws: The wheels do not always turn even with the transmission engaged if the wheel fastening screws are loose. Tighten them securely.
  • Unlubricated drive sprocket: The drive sprocket of the gear shaft should be regularly oiled. Spray oil occasionally on the drive sprocket and the free wheels to ensure proper functioning.

If the transmission remains inactive after these checks: The wheel hub or transmission gears may be damaged, requiring professional intervention. In this case, contact an authorized AL-KO service workshop for repair or replacement of the transmission. These repairs are not part of simple user maintenance.

On which page of the manual can I find the transmission cable adjustment?
Frequently Asked Questions - 05/05/2026
Response Notice-Facile

The Bowden cable adjustment (wheel transmission) can be found on page 45 of the AL-KO Premium 521 VSH manual, in the Maintenance and Care section, under the Wheel Transmission (optional) heading.

Bowden cable adjustment procedure:

  • Completely stop the engine before making any adjustments
  • Locate the Bowden cable adjustment mechanism on the transmission
  • Turn this mechanism in the direction of the arrow (marker 17 in the manual) to adjust the cable
  • Start the engine and activate the wheel transmission to check proper operation

This procedure applies if the wheel transmission cannot be activated or deactivated properly while the engine is running. If the problem persists after this adjustment, consult an authorized AL-KO service center for a thorough diagnosis.

Respond (be the first)
My AL-KO Premium 521 VSH mower's motor runs but the drive lever doesn't work. How can I fix it?
Frequently Asked Questions - 05/05/2026
Response Notice-Facile

Your AL-KO Premium 521 VSH mower has a wheel drive system that is separate from the motor. If the motor runs but the mower does not move when you press the drive lever, follow these diagnostic steps:

Main Checks

  • Drive Cable or Belt - Check that no grass, branches, or debris are wrapped around the drive belt. Clean gently.
  • Cable Condition - Inspect the cable connected to the drive lever. If it is loose, poorly connected, or damaged, it needs to be adjusted or replaced.
  • Engagement Mechanism - Gently press the drive lever several times. A mechanism may be stuck due to mowing residue.
  • System Cleaning - Before any work, turn off the motor and remove the spark plug cap. Clean around the drive system with a dry brush.

If the problem persists

If after these checks the lever still does not work, it is likely that a part of the drive system is worn or damaged. Contact an authorized AL-KO dealer to have the defective components checked and replaced. Your mower comes with a 2-year warranty - check if you are still covered.

AL-KO Premium 521 VSH - Mowing without the grass catcher - 1

Caution!

Only work without the grass catcher if the deflector plate torsion spring is working correctly.

The deflector plate is held to the mower his spring force. This causes the mowed grass to be thrown backward and downward.

Mulching with the mulch kit (optional)

When mulching, the grass cuttings are not collected, but are left on the lawn. The grass mulch prevents the soil from drying out, and supplies it with nutrients.

The best results are obtained by cutting back regularly by about 2 cm. Only young grass with a soft leaf texture decomposes quickly.

■ Grass height before mulching: 8 cm maximum
■ Grass height after mulching: 4 cm minimum

AL-KO Premium 521 VSH - Mulching with the mulch kit (optional) - 1

Adapt your walking pace to the mulching process, do not walk too fast.
