make sure to support the combined weight of camera and add-on lens by holding the body of the camera in one hand and the lens with the other. That way, the strain on the bayonet fitting will be minimized.

The nominal focal lengths of the Leica SL lenses are based on the 35 mm-format, i.e. on an original format of 24x36 mm. The sensor for Leica TL and CL models is comparatively smaller at 23.6 x 15.7 mm (by approx. a factor of 0.66). The view angle of the lenses on these cameras will therefore match that of objectives with a longer focal length by a factor of approx. 1.52 (1.52 ≈ inverse of 0.66).

Function is slowed when used with a Leica (Typ 701). MTF (see Appendix) is stated for full aperture and for apertures 5.6 and 8 for large shooting distances (infinity). Contrast is applied in percentage values for 5, 10, 20, 40 Lp/mm via the format height for tangential (dotted line) and sagittal (solid line) structures in white light. The 5 and 10 Lp/mm settings offer insights into the contrast behavior for coarser object structures, while 20 and 40 Lp/mm show the resolution capacity for fine and the finest object structures.EN

SPECIAL FEATURES Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35 f/3.5-4.5 ASPH. is a wide angle zoom lens with Leica L-bayonet. It is compatible with Leica SL, LEICA TL and CL cameras

. It features exceptionally short close-up setting limits, which results in large max. magnification ratios. The Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35 f/3.5-4.5 ASPH. features excellent contrast rendering and superior resolution with an open aperture, at all focal lengths, and all the way from infinity to close-up. The lens offers image error compensation and any residual image errors are corrected digitally in the camera. Stopping down may offer an additional minor performance increase, but would generally only be used for reasons of image composition via the depth of field. A total of 18 lenses in five agile assemblies ensure this excellent performance. In addition to the four aspherical surfaces, there are three lenses with anomalous partial dispersion for correcting chromatic image errors. All lens surfaces come with a high quality coating to ensure minimal reflection or scattered light effects. The focus is set via the movement of a relatively small and lightweight two-lens cemented element. A drive system consisting of a step motor and a linear guide ensure a very fast auto focus function. The actual lens length does not change in this model during focusing, which makes it particularly easy to handle. The focus action is virtually noiseless. The robust metal construction and complete dust and splash water protection makes this lens a great choice in adverse conditions. Summary: The Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35 f/3.5-4.5 ASPH. combines virtually all popular wide-angle focal lengths in one single lens assembly and features an extraordinary high imaging performance across the entire focal range from infinity to close-up, with the lens wide open or closed. It also features a highly robust, weatherproof outer casing. A photographer can build a comprehensive high performance kit with just three lenses: Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35 f/3.5-4.5 ASPH., a Leica SL standard zoom and a Leica SL telezoom.

All Leica SL lenses look virtually identical: they have 2 an external bayonet fitting on the front 2a for the lens hood 1 and an internal thread 2c for filters; there is a focus ring 3 and a red index button for orientation during lens exchange

additional zoom ring 4 complete with a visual index 5. A contact strip 7 in the bayonet flange does all the data exchange between the camera and the lens, including control commands for auto focus and aperture. ADJUSTMENT OF THE FOCUS AND FOCAL LENGTH In auto focus mode, the focus is set automatically by the camera; in manual mode, the photographer turns the focus ring 3 at the front of the lens. The speed at which you turn the ring determines how quickly the setting changes. Targeted fine adjustments or moving from a close-up focus to an infinity range couldn’t be easier. Please read the relevant sections in the camera manual for more details. Setting the focal length - and therefore the desired image section – is done via the setting ring just behind it

No depth of field scale is provided, because Leica SL lenses don’t come with an aperture settings ring. Instead, the top-panel display of the Leica SL offers the near and far focal length limits for the set distance.EN

TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS WITH AUTOMATIC DISPOSURE SETTINGS AND MANUAL SETTINGS FOR SHUTTER SPEED AND APERTURE The Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35 f/3.5-4.5 ASPH. features variable shutter speeds, which means that the effective aperture opening will vary depending on the focal length setting. The aperture will match the displayed value if the aperture value 3.5 is set at 16 mm. The actual aperture decreases for longer focal lengths and at 35 mm we get to the second value of 4.5 this lens is named after. The light metering function of the lens ensures that the correct light volume is measured for any exposure mode. Make sure to specify the desired image section (by selecting the correct focal length) for the later shot before you save the measured value or changing the timer/aperture combination to prevent incorrect exposure. The same applies for flash operation with a manual setting of the flash output or a computer-con- trolled flash unit. In both cases, the aperture setting on the flash unit must match to the actual lens aperture. Where a computerized flash unit and a TTL flash exposure controller is used, the actual aperture setting is forwarded automatically and the right exposure will always be guaranteed. LENS HOOD The Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35 f/3.5-4.5 ASPH. comes with a lens hood 1 matching the optical beam paths. The symmetrical bayonet is attached quickly and simply; it also fits backwards for space-saving storage. With the lens cover removed, position it in such a way that one of the index points on the lens hood 2b matches the position of the index point on the front mount of the lens 1a. Once aligned, twist the lens hood into position by turning it approx. 30° until you can hear and feel it click into place. Keep the lens hood in place whenever you carry the camera ready for use. It protects against contrast-reducing stray light and against damage and soiling of the front lens, e.g. from accidental fingerprints.EN

Dust on outer lenses should only be removed with a soft-haired brush or a soft, clean and dry microfiber cloth. Use a microfiber cloth with a circular motion from the center of the lens outward to remove stains and fingerprints. The Leica Aquadura

coating is dirt-repellent and easy to clean. Avoid cleaning with too much force to maintain this feature as long as possible. Cleaning cloths for spectacles are not suitable for lens cleaning, because they are doused in chemical substances that could damage the camera lens and its coating. Avoid excessive pressure on the lens while cleaning, even if the surface is heavily soiled. The coating is abrasion-resistant, but is not impervious to sand particles or salt crystals. Never use any lens cleaner containing solvents or oil. In addition to its type designation, each lens has its individual serial number. Please note this number in your documents as a safety measure.EN
