2.1 About the operating manual

2.2 Concerning certain groups of persons

These appliances can be used by children of 8 years and upwards and persons with impaired physical, sensory or mental abilities, or insufficient experience or knowledge, providing they are supervised or have been instructed in the proper use of the appliance and understand the risks involved.

Children must not play with the appliance.
Children must not perform cleaning or user maintenance tasks without supervision.
Children under the age of 8 should be kept away from the appliance and the connection cord whilst it is switched on or cooling down.
Packing material must not be used for playing. There is risk of asphyxiation.

2.3 Information on the power supply

The appliance is operated with electrical power which means there is in principle a risk of electric shock. Therefore, please comply with the following:

Never touch the plug with wet hands.
- Never immerse the appliance in water or other liquids; keep it away from rain and moisture. Do not operate the appliance outdoors or in rooms with a high level of humidity.
Before connecting to the power supply, make sure that the voltage stated on the type plate matches the voltage of your plug socket.
Always take hold of the plug when you wish to disconnect the plug from the mains socket. Never pull on the power cord as this could damage it.
Never carry the appliance by its power cord. It could be damaged.
Always completely uncoil the power cord before use.
Make sure that the power cord is not kinked, trapped or run over and does not come into contact with heat sources.
Only use extension cords of sufficient capacity for the power requirement of the appliance.
Always check the power cord for possible damage before using the appliance.
Before cleaning or performing maintenance on the appliance, ensure that the plug has been removed from the socket.

2.4 Information on the rotating turbo brush

The bristles on the turbo brush rotate very quickly. There is a risk of entanglement and injury.

  • Do not use the turbo brush on people, animals or plants. Keep parts of the body and items of clothing away from the moving parts and openings on the appliance when it is in operation. They may otherwise be drawn in and cause injuries.
    Before you attach or detach, open or clean the turbo brush, switch off the vacuum cleaner and disconnect the plug from the socket.
    Do not run over cords, cables etc. as the rotating brush roller may damage them. There is also a risk of them becoming tangled in the brush roller.
    The turbo brush is not suitable for cleaning sensitive surfaces. This may cause damage. Comply with the care and cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer.

2.5 Information on proper use

This appliance must only be used for domestic use. It is not suitable for industrial or commercial use.

Only use the appliance in the household and for vacuuming small amounts or dry soiling.

Any other use is considered improper use and is prohibited.

In particular, the following is prohibited:

Use of the appliance in the vicinity of explosive or highly flammable substances. There is a risk of fire or explosion.
Inserting objects which are not included with delivery in the openings of the appliance. There is a risk of injury.
Modifying or repairing the appliance yourself. There is a risk of injury.

Also prohibited:

Use of the appliance outdoors. There is danger of rain or dirt destroying the appliance.
Use without installed filters and use with damp or faulty filters. There is a risk of damage to the appliance.

Vacuuming:

  • People, animals, plants or items of clothing on the body. They may be drawn in, resulting in injuries.
  • Water and other fluids, in particular damp carpet detergents. Moisture inside the appliance can cause a short circuit.
  • Toner (for laser printers, copying machines, etc.). There is risk of fire or explosion.
  • Red-hot ash, burning cigarettes or other burning, red-hot, glowing or smoking objects. There is a risk of fire.
  • Pointed objects, such as glass shards, nails, etc. They can damage the filters and the appliance.
  • Rubble, plaster, cement, fine drilling-dust, make-up, powder, etc. These might damage the appliance.

2.6 If the appliance is faulty

If the appliance has been dropped or looks like it has been damaged, or if the connection cord of the appliance has been damaged, it has to be replaced by the manufacturer, the manufacturer's customer service or a similarly qualified person to prevent hazards.

Never use a faulty appliance or operate an appliance with a faulty power cord.
■ Hand over a faulty appliance to a specialist dealer or send it to the Dirt Devil customer service department for repairs (▶page 130, „International Service").

3 Vacuum cleaning

3.1 Unpacking

  1. Unpack the appliance and its accessories.
  2. Check that the contents are complete (fig. 1) and in perfect condition.

NOTE:

If you notice any transport damage or if anything is missing, contact your dealer immediately.

CAUTION:

Always transport or ship the appliance in its original packaging to avoid damage. Keep the packaging for this purpose. Dispose of any packaging material which you no longer require in accordance with the valid regulations in your country.

3.2 Use as a hand-held vacuum cleaner

CAUTION:

Use only intact nozzles. Only use the diamond shaped nozzle with its micro-fibre sleeve attached for sensitive surfaces.

  1. Fit the nozzle of your choice by inserting it into the vacuum cleaner opening so that you hear it click into place (fig. 3).

  2. The diamond shaped nozzle with its micro-fibre sleeve attached (fig. 1/14) adapts perfectly to the contours of all objects and thus cleans thoroughly and gently.

  3. The crevice nozzle (fig. 1/15) is ideal for cracks in sofas and car seats.

  4. If required, you can interpose the articulated joint (fig. 4).

NOTE:

For information on use of the turbo brush see chapter 3.5, If required: insert the turbo brush".

  1. Once you have fitted the components, you can connect the appliance and switch it on at the On/Off button (fig. 2/17, position "l").
  2. Make sure that you switch off the appliance before you remove or fit accessories.

NOTE:

Use the release catch (fig. 2/19) if you want to release the attached nozzle again.

3.3 Use as an upright vacuum cleaner for cleaning floors

CAUTION:

Use only intact nozzles. Only use the DIRECT PATH® floor nozzle with the micro-fibre dusting pad for sensitive surfaces.

  1. Fit the telescopic tube by inserting it into the vacuum cleaner opening so that you hear it click into place (fig. 5).
  2. Set the length of the telescopic tube as necessary by actuating the locking mechanism (fig. 1/11) and pulling on the tube at the same time.
  3. Fit a floor nozzle:

  4. Select the DIRECT PATH® floor nozzle with the micro-fibre dusting pad to gently vacuum sensitive floors (fig. 5).

  5. Select the hard floor nozzle to vacuum dirt from hard floors with crevices and joints (fig. 6).

NOTE:

Both nozzles can only be fitted to the telescopic tube.

NOTE:

Always maintain good posture when working. Select the telescopic tube length and working height so that you can work in as natural a position as possible.

  1. Once you have fitted the components, you can connect the appliance and switch it on at the On/Off button (fig. 2/17, position "l").
  2. Make sure that you switch off the appliance before you remove or fit accessories.

NOTE:

Use the release catch (fig. 2/19) if you want to release the attached nozzle or the telescopic tube again.

3.4 Use as an upright vacuum cleaner for cleaning overhead

CAUTION:

Use only intact nozzles. Only use the diamond shaped nozzle with its micro-fibre sleeve attached for sensitive surfaces.

  1. Fit the telescopic tube by inserting it into the vacuum cleaner opening so that you hear it click into place (fig. 7).
  2. Set the length of the telescopic tube as necessary by actuating the locking mechanism (fig. 1/11) and pulling on the tube at the same time.
  3. Now fit an attachment of your choice:

  4. The diamond shaped nozzle with its micro-fibre sleeve attached (fig. 7) adapts perfectly to the contours of all objects and thus cleans thoroughly and gently.

  5. The crevice nozzle (fig. 8) is ideal for cracks in sofas and car seats.

  6. We recommend interposing the articulated joint (fig. 7 + 8).

  7. You can set the position of the articulated joint using the buttons (fig. 1/6).

NOTE:

Always maintain good posture when working. Select the telescopic tube length and working height so that you can work in as natural a position as possible.

  1. Once you have fitted the components, you can connect the appliance and switch it on at the On/Off button (fig. 2/17, position "l").
  2. Make sure that you switch off the appliance before you remove or fit accessories.

The turbo brush can only be fitted directly to the appliance, i.e. not to the telescopic tube or articulated joint.

3.5 If required: insert the turbo brush

WARNING:

Risk of injury! Before you clean or remove the turbo brush, switch off the vacuum cleaner and pull the plug from the socket.

CAUTION:

Risk of material damage! The turbo brush is not suitable for cleaning sensitive surfaces. Comply with the care and cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer.

  1. Make sure that the appliance is switched off and the plug has been disconnected from the socket.
  2. If necessary, remove any attachments from the appliance. To do so, unfasten the release catch (fig. 2/19).
  3. Insert the turbo brush into the vacuum cleaner opening (fig. 9 + 10) so that you hear it click into place.
  4. Open up or close the visor depending on whether you wish to clean in the horizontal (fig. 9) or vertical direction (fig. 10).
  5. Swivel the brush head, which is pivot-mounted to rotate approximately 180^ into the position require when cleaning.

  6. If necessary, you can lock the brush head of the turbo brush in position using the locking button (fig. 1/3).

  7. If you wish to change the position of the brush head of the turbo brush again, you simply have to push the locking button (fig. 1/3) back up.

  8. You can now switch on the appliance at the On/Off button (fig. 2/17, position "l").

  9. Make sure that you switch off the appliance (position "O") before you adjust or remove the turbo brush.

4.1 Emptying the dust bin

NOTE:

The dust bin can remain in the appliance for emptying. You can dispose of the contents of the dust bin with your regular domestic waste as long as it does not contain any substances not permitted in domestic waste.

The compact dust bin can only store a limited amount of dirt. Thus, it is better if you empty it after each vacuuming session.

  1. Switch off the appliance and pull the plug from the socket.

  2. Hold the appliance low over a waste bin (fig. 12).

  3. Now press the emptying button (fig. 12/ar row) to open the dust bin base.

  4. Carefully tap out anything residue or remove it by hand.

  5. Depending on how much time has passed since the last time the filter components were cleaned, decide whether you should clean them immediately too:

  6. The dust bin and its filter components should be cleaned with every 2nd emptying process (Chapter 4.2, "Cleaning the dust bin and its filter components").

  7. The exhaust filter should be cleaned with every 4th to 6th cleaning procedure (Chapter 4.3, "Cleaning the exhaust filter").

  8. Shut the bottom plate of the dust bin again, pressing it so you hear and feel it click into place.

4.2 Cleaning the dust bin and its filter components

CAUTION:

The filter components are washable, but not suitable for dishwashers or washing machines. Furthermore, do not use detergents or brushes with hard bristles. Do not insert the filter components until they are completely dry.

WARNING:

Risk of electric shock! Unfasten the dust bin from the appliance before you wet-clean it and its filter components.

  1. Switch off the appliance and pull the plug from the socket.
  2. Empty the dust bin, chapter 4.1, Emptying the dust bin.
  3. Press the release catch for the dust bin and remove the dust bin (fig. 13).
  4. Release the dual pre-motor filter by turning it (fig. 14) and remove it from the dust bin.
  5. Remove the separator from the dust bin as shown in the figure (fig. 15).

  1. Separate the coarse filter and the fine filter of the dual pre-motor filter from each other (fig. 16).
  2. Rinse the dust bin, the separator and both filter components of the dual pre-motor filter thoroughly under running, lukewarm water.
  3. Use this opportunity to clean the exhaust filter at the same time chapter 4.3, "Cleaning the exhaust filter".

NOTE:

If you see that one of the filter elements is damaged, replace it immediately (Chapter 5.2, "Ordering spare parts").

  1. Leave the components to dry for approximately 24 hours at room temperature after cleaning them with water. Do not replace them until they are completely dry.

CAUTION:

Never operate the appliance without all the filter components correctly installed. There is a risk of damage to the motor.

  1. Insert the coarse filter back in the fine filter (fig. 16).
  2. Lower the separator all the way into the dust bin (fig. 17). Make sure that the openings of the dust bin and the separator are aligned (fig. 17/arrow).

  1. Place the dual pre-motor filter on the separator (fig. 18). In the process, make sure that the 3 lugs on the filter engage in the 3 grooves on the dust bin.
  2. Lock the dual pre-motor filter in place by turning it (fig. 18/arrow). Make sure that it clicks into place audibly.

  1. Reinsert the dust bin in its console (fig. 19):

  2. First connect it at the top and then pivot it into its console at the bottom (fig. 19/ "click").

  3. It clicks into place audibly.

4.3 Cleaning the exhaust filter

CAUTION:

The filter is washable but is not suitable for cleaning in washing machines or dishwashers. Furthermore, do not use detergents or brushes with hard bristles. Do not re-insert it until it is completely dry.

  1. Switch off the appliance and pull the plug from the socket.
  2. Unlock the exhaust filter cover by pressing the button for its release catch (fig. 20).
  3. Remove the exhaust filter (fig. 21).
  4. Rinse out the exhaust filter thoroughly under lukewarm water.
  5. Leave the exhaust filter to dry for approximately 24 hours at room temperature after cleaning it with water. Do not re-insert it until it is completely dry.
  6. Insert the exhaust filter back in its console (fig. 21).
  7. Attach the exhaust filter cover at the bottom first. Then press it firmly at the bottom (fig. 22). You will hear it click into place.

4 After use

4.4 Cleaning the micro-fibre dusting pad and the micro-fibre sleeve

  1. Remove the micro-fibre dusting pad from the rubber frames of the DIRECT PATH® floor nozzle (fig. 23).
  2. Remove the micro-fibre sleeve (fig. 1/13) from the diamond shaped nozzle (fig. 1/14).
  3. Wash both covers at a maximum temperature of 40^
  4. Allow the covers to dry completely before you store them or reinsert them.

4.5 Storing the appliance and accessories

5.1 If the appliance does not work as it should

WARNING:

Risk of injury! Never use a faulty appliance! Before you try to localise the problem, switch off the appliance and pull the plug from the socket.

See if you can solve the problem yourself by following the steps in the table.

5.3 Disposal
