Note: This unit will not start a flat battery. Safety instructions Warning! When using battery-powered appliances, basic safety precautions, including the following, should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, personal injury and material damage. X Read all of this manual carefully before using the appliance. X The intended use is described in this manual. The use of any accessory or attachment or the performance of any operation with this appliance other than those recommended in this instruction manual may present a risk of personal injury. X Retain this manual for future reference. Using your appliance Always take care when using the appliance. X This appliance is not intended for use by young or in firm persons without supervision. X The appliance is not to be used as a toy. X Use in a dry location only. Do not allow the appliance to become wet. X Do not immerse the appliance in water. X Do not open body casing. There are no user serviceable parts inside. X Do not operate the appliance in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. X To reduce the risk of damage to plugs and cords never pull the cable to remove the plug from a socket outlet. After use X When not in use, the appliance should be stored in a dry, well ventilated place out of the reach of children. X Children should not have access to stored appliances. X When the appliance is stored or transported in a vehicle it should be placed in the boot or restrained to prevent movement following sudden changes in speed or direction. X The appliance should be protected from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Inspection and repairs X Before use, check the appliance for damaged or defective parts. Check for breakage of parts, damage to switches and any other conditions that may affect its operation. X Do not use the appliance if any part is damaged or defective. X Have any damaged or defective parts repaired or replaced by an authorised repair agent. X Never attempt to remove or replace any parts other than those specified in this manual. Specific safety instructions for battery chargers Read these instructions before use: X If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or an authorised Black & Decker Service Centre in order to avoid a hazard. X Never attempt to charge non-rechargeable batteries. X Have defective cords replaced immediately. X Do not expose the battery charger to water. X Do not open the battery charger. X Do not probe the battery charger. Batteries Warning! Never attempt to charge a frozen battery. X Never attempt to open for any reason. X Do not expose the battery to water. Warning! Battery fluid is a diluted sulphuric acid and may cause personal injury or damage to property. In case of skin contact, immediately rinse with water. If redness, pain or irritation occurs seek medical attention. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with clean water and seek immediate medical attention. When disposing of batteries, follow the instructions given in the section ‘Protecting the environment’. Warning! Risk of explosive gas mixtures. Working in the vicinity of a lead-acid battery is dangerous. Batteries generate explosive gases during normal battery operation. For this reason, it is of utmost importance that each time, you read this manual and follow the instructions exactly. Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by Black & Decker may result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. Warning! A marine (boat) battery must be removed and charged on shore. To charge it on board requires equipment specially designed for marine use. This appliance is NOT designed for such use. X Vehicles may have electrical and electronic systems (e.g. engine management system, mobile phone) that may be damaged if subjected to high starting voltages and voltage peaks. Before connecting the appliance to the vehicle read the vehicle's owner's manual to confirm that external-starting assistance is allowed.3 ENGLISH X Follow these instructions and those published by the battery manufacturer, vehicle manufacturer and manufacturer of any equipment you intend to use with this unit. Review warning labels on these products and on the vehicle. X This appliance is not designed to be used as a replacement for a vehicular battery. Do not attempt to operate a vehicle that does not have a battery installed. X The appliance must only be connected to a 12 V lead- acid battery. Do not use the appliance for charging dry- cell batteries that are commonly used with home appliances. These batteries may burst and cause injury to persons and damage property. Warning! Explosive gas may be vented from the lead-acid batteries when charging and under extreme conditions battery leakage may occur. Make sure that the area is well ventilated when conducting jump starting and charging procedures. The following symbols are marked on the appliance: Features
5. 12 Vdc accessory plugs
Use Warning! Make sure that the car is in neutral and the parking brake is applied. Step 1 X Connect the black 12 Vdc accessory plug (5) into the 12 V outlet on the working vehicle and make sure that the power LED (1) lights. X Start the engine on the working vehicle. Step 2 Warning! Make sure that car is in neutral and the parking brake is applied. X Fully unwind the cord from the cord storage (4) and connect the orange 12 Vdc accessory plug (5) into the 12 V outlet on the dead vehicle and make sure that the boosting LED (2) lights. Step 3 X When the dead car is sufficiently boosted to start the engine both the power LED (1) and the boosting LED (2) will change colour to green (approx. 20 minutes). X Remove the orange 12 Vdc accessory plug (5) from the dead car and try starting the vehicle in 3-5 second bursts. Note: The housing (6) and the 12 Vdc accessory plugs (5) will become warm during the boosting process. This is normal. Step 4 X Remove the black 12 Vdc accessory plug (5) from the working car and coil the cable around the cord storage (4) and fit the 12 Vdc accessory plugs (5) into the plug storage apertures (3). Maintenance Your Black & Decker tool has been designed to operate over a long period of time with a minimum of maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation depends upon proper care and regular cleaning. Warning! Before performing any maintenance or cleaning on the appliance, unplug the appliance. X From time to time wipe the appliance with a damp cloth. Do not use any abrasive or solvent-based cleaner. Do not immerse the appliance in water. X Clean the outside case with a soft cloth and, if necessary, mild soap solution. X Do not allow liquid to enter the unit. Do not operate when the unit is wet. X Keep the cords coiled during storage to prevent damage to the cords. Troubleshooting If the power and boosting LED’s (1 & 2) do not light up check the following: X Check that the donor vehicles 12 V accessory socket is live, some cars require the key to be in the accessory position before the socket is live. X Check that the 12 Vdc accessory plugs (5) are fully inserted. X Check for blown fuses in the 12 Vdc accessory plugs (5). If your car fails to start: X Repeat steps 2-4 in the ‘use’ section and continue the boosting process for a further 10 minutes or until the LED’s change to green. X If your car still fails to start we suggest you have your battery checked by a qualified auto-electrician. Power LED indicator. Boosting LED indicator.4 ENGLISH Replacing the fuse in the vehicle dc accessory plug X Remove the cap by turning it counter clockwise. X Remove the cap and centre pin. X Remove the fuse. X Fit a new fuse of the same type and size (8 A). X Refit the cap and centre pin. X Tighten the cap by turning clockwise onto the plug. Protecting the environment Should you find one day that your Black & Decker product needs replacement, or if it is of no further use to you, do not dispose of it with household waste. Make this product available for separate collection. Separate collection of used products and packaging allows materials to be recycled and used again. Re- use of recycled materials helps prevent environmental pollution and reduces the demand for raw materials. Local regulations may provide for separate collection of electrical products from the household, at municipal waste sites or by the retailer when you purchase a new product. Black & Decker provides a facility for the collection and recycling of Black & Decker products once they have reached the end of their working life.
