Using the Heater without the Fan

Before using the heater for the first time, ensure that a battery has been inserted (see "Changing the Batteries").

  1. Turn on gas cylinder and open quick-acting valve in the gas supply line.

Trumatic S 55 T - Using the Heater without the Fan - 1

  1. Turn the control knob (a) through thermostat positions 1 - 10 and press down as far it will go. The unit will ignite automatically and the automatic ignition pilot light (d) will flash until the flame lights.

Keep the control knob pressed down for a further 10 seconds to allow the safety pilot to operate.

If the flame goes out again, re-ignition occurs immediately during the closing time of the safety pilot (approx. 30 seconds).

Caution: If a fault occurs, wait at least two minutes before trying to light the unit again.

If there is no flame, the automatic ignitor continues to operate until the control knob is switched to "0".

If there is air in the gas supply line, it can take up to two minutes until there is gas available for combustion. During this time hold the control knob down until the flame lights.

Operating instructions

Always observe the operating instructions and "Important operating notes" prior to starting! The

vehicle owner is responsible for correct operation of the appliance.

The installer or vehicle owner must affix the yellow sticker with warning information enclosed with the appliance to a place in the vehicle where it is clearly visible to all users (e.g. on the wardrobe door)! Ask Truma to send you a sticker if necessary.

Short Description

The Truma S 55 T is a unit heater with a combustion air intake at the base and top exhaust gas release. Heater output, independent of the 12V power connection, is up to 3kW without the fan, and with the 12V fan switched on can be adjusted for an output of up to 5kW as required.

Using the Heater with the Fan

Trumatic S 55 T - Using the Heater with the Fan - 1
j = Manual fan control

h = Fan Off

(Heater output up to 3 kW)

(Heater output up to 5 kW)

Turn the knob to the desired fan setting.

Setting for summer use (Fan, heater off)

Turn the knob to the desired fan setting.

k = Automatic operation with fan

(Heater output up to 5 kW)

Output is automatically adjusted (infinitely variable adjustment) to match the desired heater setting. Maximum output can be set using the knob if desired. Setting between this value and the slow running speed takes place automatically.

Hot air is drawn in via the hot air fan and fed via three flexible hot air pipes mainly into the floor area of the vehicle.

The extensive accessories and parts program enables the hot air system to be adapted to suit all comfort requirements.

Room Thermostat

With the fan off (Position h) heater output is up to 3kW , depending on the thermostat setting and heating requirements. With the fan on (Position j or k) heater output can be continuously adjusted up to 5kW as required. When the fan is switched off the heater automatically drops back to the 3kW level.

To maintain an average room temperature of about 22^ we recommend a thermostat setting of 3 - 5 with the fan off, or 4 - 8 with the fan on.

The exact thermostat setting must be determined in each case, depending on how much heat is needed and the design of your vehicle.

Note: The thermostat probe is underneath the heater. Please note that the thermostat will be adversely affected by cold draughts from refrigerator vents, gaps below doors, etc., or by a deep-piled carpet. Always be sure to avoid problems of this kind, otherwise satisfactory temperature control cannot be guaranteed.

Switching off

Turn the control switch to "0" (the automatic ignition will switch off at the same time).
Turn the fan to "off" (Position h) on the control console.

If the unit is not used for a relatively long period of time, close off the quick-action gate valve on the gas pipe and gas bottle.

Important operating notes

  1. When using the heater while travelling in a mobile home be sure to follow the „Special installation instructions" (see Servicing, Point 4).
  2. Underfloor combustion air intakes must be kept clear of dirt and snow slush. The intake vent on the heater should not be located in the spray area of the wheels (if necessary fit a spray guard).
  3. Before switching on the heater in winter, clear all snow from the cowl.

If you fit a roof cover over your caravan, the exhaust cowl must always pass right through this cover. For this purpose use cowl extension UEK (Art.no.30630-04)!
4. If the heater is repeatedly blown out in very windy parking spots, or when used in winter, we recommend the SKV cowl extension kit (Art. no. 30690-00) which can be screwed onto the cowl shaft when required, but must be dismantled before driving the vehicle.
5. Inspect the exhaust duct and all connections at regular intervals, and always in the event of blowback (misfire). It is essential for the exhaust duct to be installed so that it slopes upwards over its whole length and is secured with several clamps. Never place any object on the exhaust duct, since this could result in damage. The exhaust duct connection to

both the heater and the cowl must be firm and well sealed. It is no longer permissible to operate heaters with incorrectly fitted or damaged exhaust ducts!

  1. Never allow the warm air outlet on the heater to be obstructed in any way. For instance never hang washing on or in front of the heater to dry. Misusing your heater in this way could cause serious damage from overheating. Do not place flammable objects near the heater. Please follow these guidelines in the interest of your own safety.

General safety notes

If the gas system is leaking or if there is a smell of gas:

  • extinguish all naked flames!
  • do not smoke!
  • switch off all appliances!
  • shut off the gas cylinder!
    open windows and doors!
  • do not actuate any electrical switches!
  • have the entire system checked by an expert!

Trumatic S 55 T - If the gas system is leaking or if there is a smell of gas: - 1

Repairs may only be carried out by an expert.

Attention: A new O-ring must always be installed after dismantling the exhaust duct!

  1. Any alteration to the appliance (including exhaust duct and cowl) or the use of spare parts and accessories which are important to the function of the heater and which are not original Truma parts, as well as the non-observation of the installation and operating instructions, will lead to the cancelling of the guarantee and exclusion of liability claims. It also becomes illegal to use the appliance, and in some countries this even makes it illegal to use the vehicle.
  2. The operating pressure of the 30 mbar gas supply (or 28 mbar butane/ 37 mbar propane) must correspond with the operating pressure of the 30 mbar unit.
  3. In Germany only, LPG installations must comply with DVGW form G 607.

The gas system must be tested every 2 years by a liquid gas expert (DVFG, TUV, DEKRA). Performance of this test must be confirmed on

the test certificate according to DVGW form G 607.

The vehicle owner (operator) is responsible for arranging the inspection.

  1. In other countries, the appropriate regulations must be observed. For your own safety it is absolutely necessary to have the complete gas installation and appliance checked by an expert regularly (at least every two years).
  2. Do not operate the appliance when refuelling the vehicle and when in the garage.
  3. When a brand-new unit is first used (or when the unit is used after a relatively long break), it may give off a little smoke and a slight smell. If this happens we recommend running the unit on full power, ensuring that the room is well ventilated.
  4. If the burner makes an unusual noise or if the flame lifts off while burning, it is likely that the regulator is faulty, and it is essential to have it checked.
  5. Items sensitive to heat (e.g. spray cans) must not be stored in the installation area, since excess temperatures may under certain circumstances be incurred there.

For the gas system only gas pressure regulators with protection against excess pressure, such as regulators with safety valves according to DIN 4811 and VP 306, may be used. We recommend the Truma DUB vehicle regulator or in the case of a two cylinder gas installation that is only accessible from the outside, the Truma Triomatic with automatic reserve switch-over. The Truma regulators have been specially designed for heavy duty use in caravans, boats and vehicles. In addition to a safety valve for countering excess pressure, they also have a pressure gauge with which you can check that the installation is fully gas tight.

Always connect the pressure regulator to the gas cylinder by hand with great care. For temperatures around 0^ and below, the regulators should be operated with a defroster system (Eis-Ex). Inspect the regulator connection hoses regularly for signs of weakness. For winter camping use only special frost-resistant hoses. Gas cylinders must always be upright!

Servicing

In the event of a fault contact the Truma Service outlet in the first instance (see page 20)

1 Removing the Heater Cover

Trumatic S 55 T - Removing the Heater Cover - 1

Pull the cover forward at the top, lift up the retaining springs and fold out cover forwards. (If space is limited, lift the cover upwards and forwards, lift until the cover is released, then remove it.)

Then place the cover to the side so that the connection cables for the hot air fan and the ignition pilot light do not have to be removed.

Trumatic S 55 T - Removing the Heater Cover - 2

To assemble, place the cover on the lower support clip (I). Insert the operating rod into the knob sleeve from below and let the cover slide upwards until it fits into position. Fit the control knob from above in such a way that the arrow points to "0".

2 Changing batteries on the automatic ignitor

If the pilot light (d) does not flash, or if ignition sparks cannot be heard or are heard only at intervals of more than one second, the battery must be replaced.

Replace the battery only if the heater is switched off. Insert a new battery before the start of the heating season.

Trumatic S 55 T - Changing batteries on the automatic ignitor - 1

Remove the heater cover (see Point 1), push the battery compartment cover up and change the battery. Ensure that the polarity is correct. Close the battery compartment again.

Only use temperature resistant (+70^) ,leakproof Mignon batteries (LR 6, AA, AM 3, Art. no. 30030-99200), other batteries could cause operational faults!

3 Cleaning (only when the unit is switched off):

It is recommended that dust gathering on the heat exchanger and on the base plate be removed at least once a year before regular use recommences.

To clean the impeller on the hot air fan, remove the false floor in the wardrobe, loosen the retaining spring form on the fan, draw the ventilator housing sideways away from the air diffuser and lift upwards and off. If necessary disconnect the electrical cables. Clean the blades with a small brush.

To assemble, first place the Trumavent fan in the air diffuser and then fix in place with the retaining spring.

4 Special installation instructions

Attention: This heater is not to be installed in mobile homes which are intended for approval in Germany!

In other countries the respective regulations must be observed as well as the restrictions for using the appliance when moving.

  1. When using the heater - particularly while driving - the roof flue must be open to allow the flow of air. If necessary, fit an AKV flue extension (item No. 30010-20800).

Trumatic S 55 T - Special installation instructions - 1

Mobile home manufacturers are required to determine the ideal combination of combustion air intake extension and roof flue extension to suit the individual versions of their vehicles by carrying out test runs and consulting Truma.

Roof extensions as well as luggage stowed in the vicinity of the exhaust cowl impede the heater in its operation, especially whilst the vehicle is moving. The flame may flash back, causing damage to the heater and vehicle. In this case additional cowl extensions must be used so that the top of the cowl projects at least 10cm above any objects. Failure to observe this instruction means that no guarantee claim will be entertained for resultant damage to the heater and vehicle.

  1. If the vehicle is undersea- led, the combustion air intake connection under the vehicle must be covered to prevent the resulting spray mist from impairing the operation of the heating unit. Remove the covering again once the work is completed.
