Before First Use

  • Unpack the appliance.
  • Before first use, clean the carafe (12), filter basket (16), filter holder (4) and filters (7-9) thoroughly in warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Please note: To remove the filter basket, open the top lid (1), lift the spout (Fig.5) and press the release knob next to the filter. The filter basket disengages and can be removed. When re-inserting it, make sure it engages (audibly clicks into place).
  • Before using your appliance for the first time or after longer periods of non-use, clean it by rinsing with water without adding any coffee grounds. Proceed as follows:

Step 1: Espresso/Cappuccino Maker

  1. Fill cold water into the water tank (13). For this purpose it is possible to detach the water tank (Fig.4): Open the top lid (1) and lift out the tank. Fill it to the maximum level and re-insert it into the coffee maker. Make sure, it engages. Only if the lid (1) can be fully closed (you will hear a slight click), is the water tank in place!

Press / (E). A green pilot light will light up. The pilot light of the ESPRESSO button (F) flashes.

Press ESPRESSO (F). You have now switched on the pump and the brewing system will fill with water.

Please note:

When using your espresso maker for the first time, the noise might be louder than usual. This is quite normal and attributable to air inside the brewing system. Noise will drop to the usual level after a few seconds.

  1. When water drips from the filter holder, the system is filled with water. Press ESPRESSO (F) again to switch it off.
  2. Let the water in the appliance continue to heat up. When the ESPRESSO pilot light is off, press ESPRESSO (F) again and let 1 cup of water drip through. After that, the appliance stops automatically. Repeat this procedure and let 2-3 cups of water drip.

Step 2: Steam Nozzle

  1. Place a container under the steam nozzle (5).
  2. Set the steam release knob (3) to

  4. Place the carafe (12) onto the hotplate (11).
  5. Switch on the coffee maker by pressing AUTO/CAfé (A) twice.
  6. When all the water has dripped into the carafe, turn the coffee maker off by pressing AUTO/CAFE (A), let it cool for approx. 10 minutes and repeat the above procedure with fresh water.

Cleaning before first use is now complete. Your appliance is now ready for brewing coffee, espresso, cappuccino to your taste.

Brewing Espresso

Espresso is much stronger and more aromatic than normal coffee and is drunk out of small cups. It is prepared by forcing hot water under pressure through ground coffee or coffee pods. This produces the delightful black coffee with the stimulating effect. Apart from its characteristic flavour, the hallmark of espresso is the typical formation of a splendid froth, called crema. This requires a high pressure and the use of genuine, properly roasted espresso coffee beans which have been correctly ground.

If you do not use ready-ground espresso coffee, grind the coffee beans in a coffee mill at a medium to fine setting.

  1. Fill the water tank (13) with fresh cold water. (see Before First Use, Step 1: Espresso/Cappuccino Maker, no.1)
  2. Fully turn the steam release knob (3) to

Operating Instructions

ES 11108

  1. Press / (E), to select the desired espresso setting:

Press once: 1 cup of espresso, pilot light is green.

Press twice: 2 cups of espresso, pilot light is red.

Press 3 times: 1 cup of espresso with coffee pod, pilot light is blue.

Press 4 times: Espresso function is off.

  1. Press ESPRESSO (F). The pump is on. The ESPRESSO pilot light flashes. When water drips from the boiler outlet (17), the brewing system is filled with water.
  2. Then press ESPRESSO (F) again to turn it off. When the appliance has reached its required temperature, the ESPRESSO pilot light goes off.
  3. Put the espresso cups onto the cup warmer (2) to warm them.
  4. Insert the respective filter (7, 8 or 9) into the filter holder (4).
  5. Fill the filter with 1 or 2 measuring spoons of ground coffee and slightly tamp it with the tamper at the lower end of the measuring spoon. However, make sure not to press too hard, as the espresso will then drip very slowly.

Please note:

Tamping the coffee should rather serve to distribute the ground coffee evenly in the filter.

This machine is also designed for using standard coffee-pods, which need to be placed into the respective filter (9).

  1. Insert the filter holder (4): Hold the filter holder in a horizontal position. The handle clip is flipped back and lies flat on the handle. The handle points to the left (towards the carafe). Gently lift the filter holder into the boiler outlet (17) and turn the handle to the right as far as possible. Check that the filter holder is now locked in place.

Please note:

The filter holder must sit firmly in the boiler outlet to avoid that water leaks from the filter during brewing.
10. Place 1 or 2 cups under the filter holder. (When using coffee pods, 1 cup only.)
11. When the ESPRESSO pilot light (F) is off, press the ESPRESSO button.

  1. When approx. 60ml of espresso have dripped into the cup(s), the machine stops automatically. However, it is possible to stop the process anytime earlier by simply pressing the ESPRESSO button (F) again.
  2. After a short cooling time, remove the filter holder (4) (step 9 in reverse order). Flip the handle clip forward and knock the coffee grounds or coffee pod out of the filter. ATTENTION! When knocking out coffee grounds, be careful not to strike the filter holder hard against sharp edges. This could damage the filter holder.
  3. Thoroughly clean the filter (7-9).

Repeat procedure for another cup of espresso.

Brewing Cappuccino

Steam can be used to make the milk frothy for a cappuccino or for heating liquids. The temperature required to produce steam being higher than that necessary to make an espresso, the espresso should always be prepared first, because otherwise the coffee might be burnt.

Therefore, first brew espresso coffee using a larger cup.

Frothing Milk for Cappuccino

  1. Pour about 200ml of skimmed milk into a high narrow container that fits under the steam nozzle (5).
Please note: Milk must be fresh and cold (no older milk!), the container should be cooled, too.
  2. To switch on, press / (E).
  3. Press ESPRESSO (F). Wait until water starts dripping from the boiler outlet (17). The brewing system is filled. Then press ESPRESSO (F) again to switch off. The ESPRESSO pilot light flashes.
  4. When the ESPRESSO pilot light is off, hold the container under the nozzle so that it is fully dipped into the milk.
  5. Slowly open the steam release knob (3) - turn towards MAX - not moving the container. The nozzle must not touch the bottom of the container.
  6. As soon as the milk is frothy (about 10-30s), return the steam release knob (3) to the setting.

Operating Instructions

ES 11108

  1. Spoon the frothed milk onto the espresso. Add some hot liquid milk. Traditionally, a cappuccino is made of 13 coffee, 13 hot milk and 13 frothed milk.

Add some sugar to taste and, if desired, sprinkle a little powdered chocolate on top of the froth.

Your cappuccino is done.

  1. Now hold an empty container under the nozzle (5) and briefly open the steam release knob (3) to eliminate milk residues from inside the nozzle.
  2. Re-set the steam release knob (3) to
  3. Thoroughly clean and rinse the nozzle (5) and its frothing device after each use (see Cleaning and Maintenance).

Brewing Coffee

Before you prepare the brew cycle, please note that it is possible to either pre-programme brewing or to start brewing immediately.

Pre-programmed start:

Press AUTO/CAFE (A) once to activate the Automatic Start. AUTO flashes on the display. At the preset time (see Settings) the appliance switches on, the AUTO/CAFE pilot light lights up and brewing starts. During the brew cycle, AUTO keeps flashing on the display.

Immediate start:

Press AUTO/CAFE (A) twice. Brewing starts immediately. The AUTO/CAFE pilot light is on during brewing. Press AUTO/CAFE again to switch the appliance off.

ATTENTION! It is not possible to brew coffee and espresso at the same time!

You can stop the brew cycle before it is complete anytime by pressing AUTO/CAFE (A). The pilot light goes off.

The Brew Cycle

Important! Keep the lid on the carafe while brewing. The drip stop will not operate without the lid.

  1. Open the top lid (1).
  2. Fill the water tank (13) with fresh cold water. (See Before First Use, Step 1: Espresso/Cappuccino Maker, no.1). Markings on the tank or carafe indicate the level of water required to brew the desired number of cups. Never exceed the MAX filling mark (water tank), but make sure water is at least up to MIN mark for each brew cycle.
  3. Lift the spout (Fig.5) and insert a standard #4 cone shaped paper filter (not included) in the filter basket (16).
  4. Fill filter with regular ground coffee. We recommend one measuring spoon of coffee for each cup of strong coffee desired. After having used your coffee maker several times, you may, of course, adjust the amount to your taste.
  5. Fold down the spout (Fig.5) and close the lid (1). It must engage audibly.
  6. Put the carafe (12) with its lid onto the hotplate (11).

Please note:

Bottom of the carafe needs to sit flat on the hotplate. Make sure carafe is perfectly in place; otherwise coffee cannot drip from filter into carafe.
7. Press AUTO/CAfé (A) either once or twice according to the setting (see above) to start the brew cycle. The pilot light lights up. Brewing starts.

Please note:

If you wish to serve a cup of coffee before the brew cycle is complete, simply remove the carafe (12) from the hotplate (11). Dripping will automatically cease. Put carafe back into place on hotplate within 15 seconds, dripping will resume.

After Brewing

After brewing, whether pre-programmed or immediate, the coffee maker will keep the coffee warm. When the preset keep-warm time (1-5 hours) has elapsed, the coffee maker switches off automatically.

Operating Instructions

ES 11108

Before starting another brew cycle, wait 10 minutes after having switched off the appliance to allow the heating element to cool.

GB

Caution! If the appliance is not allowed to cool before immediate repeated use, water filled in the water tank (13) may overheat and a spray of steam could be released, creating a risk of burns.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Always unplug the appliance and let it cool before attempting to clean. Never put the appliance into water or any other liquid!
After daily use, clean the filter basket (16), carafe (12), drip plate and drip tray (6), filter holder (4) and filters (7-9) in hot soapy water.
- When the appliance has fully cooled, wipe the boiler outlet (17) with a damp cloth.
- Should the filters (7-9) be clogged by ground coffee, use a soft brush to clean them.
- Immediately after having prepared frothed milk, clean the steam nozzle (5) and its frothing device to remove any milk residues. For this purpose, let some steam escape for another 1-2 seconds (as described in Brewing Cappuccino) to flush any residual milk out of the nozzle. Then, detach - after the appliance has cooled down - the frothing device from the steam nozzle. Thoroughly rinse the frothing device. Wipe the metal nozzle with a wet cloth and a mild detergent. Dry parts and re-assemble.

For hygienic reasons, it is imperative to clean the nozzle after each use!

  • Do not wipe the interior of the water tank (13) with a cloth or the like. This may cause deposits which can deteriorate the perfect operation of the appliance. Regularly rinse with clear water.
  • Wipe exterior with a damp cloth to remove superficial stains. For stubborn stains, use a nylon or plastic pad with a non-abrasive cleanser.
  • Do not use metal scouring pads or abrasive cleansers.
  • Never attempt to clean any of the accessories in the dishwasher!

Dscaling

Regularly descale your espresso coffe cappuccino maker, depending on the frequency of use and the quality of water used in the appliance.
- We recommend using a common descaler suitable for any type of coffee maker. Prepare the solution according to the instructions on the packaging.

Coffee Maker:

  1. Fill the cleaning solution into the water tank (13).
  2. Operate the appliance as described in Brewing Coffee (without coffee grounds!). Let only one third of the solution drip into the carafe. Turn the appliance off and let solution work for 15 minutes.
  3. Return the solution from the carafe (12) into the water tank (13).
  4. Switch the appliance on and let the entire solution drip into the carafe.
  5. Then turn the unit off. Clean the filter basket (16).
  6. Brew another 3 water tank fillings of clear water to rinse the system and eliminate any cleaning solution residues.

Espresso Maker:

  1. Fill the cleaning solution into the water tank (13).
  2. Operate the appliance as described in Brewing Espresso (without coffee grounds!). Place a cup on the drip plate (6).
  3. As soon as the ESPRESSO button's (F) pilot light is off, press this button. Let the solution drip until the appliance stops automatically (approx. 1-2 cups).
  4. When the ESPRESSO button's pilot light is off again, hold an empty heat-resistant container under the steam nozzle (5) and let steam escape for approx. 1 minute. Close the steam release knob (3). Switch the appliance off by pressing / (E) several times, if necessary, and let the solution work for 15 minutes.
  5. Switch the appliance on again with / (E) and repeat steps 2-5 at least 3 times or until there is no more cleaning solution left in the water tank (13).

Operating Instructions

ES 11108

  1. Repeat the above steps - without the 15 minutes reaction time - with 3 water tank fillings of clear water to rinse the system from any cleaning solution residues.
