Frequently Asked Questions - MX-25401 Maxwell

How do I measure DC voltage with the MX-25401?
Set the function switch to the V position, then press SELECT to choose DC mode. Connect the red test lead to the positive side and the black lead to negative. The display shows the voltage and polarity. Max input is 600 V DC.
Can I measure AC voltage with this multimeter?
Yes. Turn the function switch to V, press SELECT to choose AC mode. Connect the probes across the source. The display shows the AC voltage (RMS). Frequency range is 40-400 Hz, max 600 V AC.
How do I measure current?
Set the function switch to mA, press SELECT to choose DC or AC. Connect the meter in series with the circuit. Maximum current is 200 mA; exceeding this blows the internal fuse.
How do I test continuity?
Turn the function switch to the Ω/•))) position. Press SELECT until the continuity symbol appears. Connect probes to the circuit. If resistance is below 30 Ω, the meter beeps.
What battery does the MX-25401 use and how do I replace it?
It uses one CR2032 battery. To replace, remove the screw on the battery cover, take out the old battery, insert new one with correct polarity, and replace the cover.
Why does the display show 'OL'?
OL stands for overload or open circuit. It appears when the measured value exceeds the selected range or when the circuit is open (e.g., resistance measurement with no connection).
How does the auto power off work?
If the meter is idle for about 15 minutes, it automatically turns off to save battery. To wake it, press the HOLD button or rotate the function switch.
How do I use the LED lamp?
Press and hold the button with the lamp symbol () for more than 2 seconds to turn on the LED lamp. Press and hold again to turn it off. It auto-shuts after 15 seconds.
What safety precautions should I take when measuring high voltage?
Always use the correct range and mode. Do not measure above 600 V. Inspect leads for damage. Connect the common lead first. Keep fingers behind the probe guards. Be especially careful above 30 V AC RMS or 60 V DC.
How do I replace the fuse?
Turn off the meter and remove the battery cover (screw A and cover B). Remove screws D, then the back cover. Locate the fuse (E) and replace with F250 mA/250 V (5x20 mm) fuse. Reassemble.

  • Do not use the device if it operates improperly. If you have doubts, take the device to a service station.
  • Do not use the device near explosive materials (gases, vapors, powders)
  • Do not measure higher voltage on the device than indicated, not between the measuring connectors or between one of them and the earthing.
  • Verify the operation of the device before usage by measuring a known voltage.
  • When measuring current, turn off the device before connecting it to the circuit. Make sure that the device is connected to the measured circuit serially.
  • Only use the designated spare parts to repair the device.
  • When measuring above 30 V AC RMS, 42 V peak, or 60 V DC voltage pay extra attention, because there is a risk of electric shock.
  • When measuring, connect the measuring pin on the wire first, and then the one on the device to the circuit.
  • Do not use the device if the battery container lid or any part of the cover is missing.
  • To avoid incorrect measuring results, electric shock and injury, replace the batteries right after the low battery symbol is lit on the display.

Further risks: If any of the measuring points are connected to a dangerous voltage, this voltage may appear on the other measuring pin as well.

WARNING!

To avoid damage to the device or the measured circuit, please note the following:

  • Disconnect the power cord and discharge the high capacity capacitors before measuring resistance, diode or continuity.
  • Use the proper mode and threshold for measurement.
  • Before measuring current always check the fuses and turn off the measured circuit before connecting the device to it.
  • Remove the device from the measured circuit before changing measuring mode with the switch.
  • Remove the device from the measured circuit before taking off the cover.

Note:

  • Before replacing the battery disconnect the measuring wire and the pin from the measured circuit.
  • Switch the device off before replacing the battery.
  • Pay attention to the correct polarity when inserting the battery. The device may be damaged if the battery is put in backwards.
  • Only use the prescribed battery type (CR2032)

Fuse replacement

Fuse replacement is seldom necessary, and even if it is, it is mostly due to user error. Use only the following type of fuse for replacement:

F250 mA/250 V (R5x20 mm)

Technical diagram of a mechanical device with labeled parts A, B, C, D, and E

To replace the fuse:

  • Turn off the device.
  • Remove the "A" screw and the "B" cover.
  • Remove the "D" screws. Remove the "C" battery container lid and take off the back cover of the device.
  • Carefully remove the fuse ("E")
  • Insert the new fuse.
