THE BREAST PUMP AND BREASTFEEDING

THE BREAST PUMP AND BREASTFEEDING

Breastfeeding is a very important stage in a baby's and in a mother's life. For babies, latching on and sucking means not only satisfying a primary physiological need, but also, and more importantly, a precious moment in their relationship with their mothers, full of emotions and tactile, auditory, taste, and olfactory sensations. Satisfying this need gives a great feeling of tranquillity and well-being to both the mother and her child. Breast milk contains all the nutrients required to meet infants' nutritional and psychological needs at least for the first 6 months of their lives. The Chicco wearable electric breast pump helps extend breastfeeding, in the event of excess milk or when you cannot always be with your baby. In such cases you can extract milk, store it, and give it to baby when required.

SET-UP

  • Before using the breast pump for the first time, thoroughly wash all components, with the exception of the motor unit (1) and the USB cable (18), as described under "CLEANING".
  • Charge the motor unit (1) via the supplied USB cable (18) by plugging it into a power outlet using a compatible 5V 2A mains adaptor. Open the silicone cover (17) on the back of the motor unit, insert the USB cable (18) into the USB port (16), connect it to a compatible 5V 2A adaptor and then plug the latter into the mains socket.
  • During recharging, the battery level indicator (13) flashes white and lights up solid white when charging is complete.

WARNING: The breast pump cannot be used while it is charging.

WARNING: Only charge the breast pump with compatible 5V 2A mains adaptors, otherwise the breast pump may be irreparably damaged.

WARNING: In case of prolonged non-use, recharge the battery at least once every 3 months.

  • Then assemble the breast pump as follows:
  • Fully insert the valve (5) onto the circular duct at the base of the connector (4) so that the cut of its edges is parallel to the cup (Step 1)
  • Push the outer edge to prevent damaging the valve and make sure that both closing edges of the assembled valve are joined together. If not, reposition the valve, making sure that the two edges are correctly aligned.
  • Assemble the silicone membrane (3) onto the connector (4) and make sure that the outer edge thoroughly overlaps with the edge of the connector housing (Step 2)
  • Insert the connector inside the milk container by fastening it tightly to the membrane space at the top of the container. (Step 3)
  • Close the milk container with the rigid cup by attaching it firmly to the connection. (Step 4). Make sure that the two parts are tightly

closed around the entire perimeter.

  • Securely fasten the motor unit to the milk container and cup assembly (Step 5).
  • On the back of the motor body there is an L marked on one motor and an R on the other to identify left and right respectively. The two motors are interchangeable, but these small references allow the user to identify which was used on one breast and which on the other, as the motor stores the most recent settings used before it was switched off.

- Before each use, sanitise all the components, except for the motor unit (1) and the USB cable (19), with a cold sanitizing method using sterilising liquids (following the manufacturer's instructions), or hot sanitizing (steam) using specific devices, or by boiling the components (5 minutes), and letting any hot sanitized components fully cool down before use.

WARNING: Do not sterilise inside microwave ovens as the components may be irreparably damaged.

- Before each use, it is advisable to check the battery charge status by pressing the on/off button once with the motor unit switched off and checking the indicator lights 13, 14, 15, 16:

  • if all the indicators light up, the battery is fully charged,
  • if indicators 13, 14 and 15 light up, the battery is almost fully charged,
  • if indicators 13 and 14 light up, the battery is approximately 50% charged,
  • if indicator 13 lights up, the battery is at minimum charge and recharging is recommended before using the breast pump to prevent it from dying during use,
  • if indicator 13 flashes quickly, the battery is low and must necessarily be recharged before use as described under "PREPARATION".

  • Wash your hands and assemble the breast pump as shown in the PREPARATION paragraph.

  • Place the breast pump on the breast and make sure that no air passes between the breast and the cup so that the product works properly. Support the breast with your hand from below and hold the breast pump on the breast.

It is essential that the nipple is perfectly aligned with the hole on the cup (step 6).

  • If the standard 27 mm cup is too large for your nipple, use a 24 mm or 21 mm silicone flange (7) from those included in the package, taking care to fit it completely around the cup after closing the milk container with the cup (Step 7).
  • How can the user identify the most suitable flange? The nipple must be able to move freely during use. If friction forms between the nipple and the cup/flange, then the latter is too small. If the areola is also sucked in, then it is too big.

  • Once the breast pump is positioned on the breast, press and hold the on/off button (8) to switch the breast pump on.
  • Indicators 13, 14, 15, 16 will light up for a few seconds to indicate the battery charge status as mentioned above.

Note: when switched on, the breast pump always starts in stimulation mode to facilitate milk extraction, using the factory settings (level 1). After displaying the battery charge status via indicators 13, 14, 15, 16 only the indicator corresponding to the stimulation mode (13) will light up.

  • After approximately 2 minutes of stimulation, the appliance automatically switches to extraction mode at level 1 (factory settings). The indicator for standard extraction mode (14) lights up.
  • You can stop the stimulation stage and switch to the standard ex-

pression stage by pressing the mode selection button (12) once. To switch to intense extraction mode (15), press the mode selection button (12) twice.

By repeatedly pressing the mode selection button (12), 3 different modes can be selected:

1- Stimulation (13)

2- Standard extraction (14)

3- Intense extraction (15)

- The intensity of stimulation and extraction can be adjusted by using the "+" (11) and "-" (10) buttons.

- If the level of extraction/stimulation chosen causes discomfort or pain, reduce it to a suitable level by pressing the "-" button (10).

Note: To avoid any danger deriving from spilt liquid (milk), never fill the milk container beyond the highest level indicated on the graduated scale (150 ml).

- The breast pump can be paused by pressing the on/off button (9) once, pressing a second time will resume the operation where it left off.

- To switch the breast pump off, press and hold the on/off button (9), otherwise the breast pump will automatically switch off after 30 minutes.

When the battery is low, indicator 13 will start flashing and the product will switch off shortly afterwards. The battery must necessarily be recharged before resuming use of the breast pump as indicated under "PREPARATION".

• After use, with the breast pump switched off, remove it from the breast while holding it upright.

- After placing the base of the container on a flat surface, remove the motor unit from the milk container (Step 8) while holding it upright so that the milk does not spill out.

- WARNING: the milk container is not suitable for milk storage.

- Empty the container by pouring the extracted milk through the emptying hole (7) directly into a feeding bottle/milk bag/container (Step 9).

CLEANING

  • Before carrying out any cleaning operations, check that the product is not connected to the mains and that it is switched off.
  • Separate all the components from the breast pump. Note: remove the valve (5) by pulling it gently.
  • WARNING: Make sure that the valve is always removed in a gentle way; do not use any tool for cleaning it because it may be damaged, making the breast pump impossible to use.
  • Thoroughly wash all components except the motor unit (1) and the USB cable (19) with warm water and dishwashing liquid, rinse thoroughly and dry thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive products to clean the breast pump and its components.
  • Clean the motor unit with a soft, clean and dry cloth. Warning! Do not wet the appliance or put it into water or other liquids.
  • The following can be washed in the dishwasher using a delicate wash cycle: milk container, connector, valve, membrane, cup and flanges. This more aggressive type of washing may cause the material to discolour or become dull and break down over time.
  • Carefully clean the walls of the emptying hole with a bottle brush.
  • After washing, always store the product in a clean, dry place. If necessary, hand wash the fabric bag in lukewarm water following the instructions on the label that has the following washing symbols:
