Fuelling

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Fuelling - 1

Utmost care is required when handling fuel and oil. Keep away smoke and open flames (risk of explosion).

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Fuelling - 2

This product is operated by a mixture from regular gasoline (unleaded) and two-stroke engine oil.

Petrol: Octane number at least 91 ROZ unleaded

  • Do not fill in leaded gasoline, diesel or other non-approved fuels.
  • Do not use gasoline having a smaller octance number than 91 ROZ. This may lead to severe engine damages due to increased engine temperatures.
  • If you frequently operate the product at high speeds, you should use gasoline with a higher octane number.

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Petrol: Octane number at least 91 ROZ unleaded - 1

The use of unleaded gasoline is recommended for environment protection reasons.

Two-stroke engine oil:

acc. to JASO FC or ISO EGD specifications

- Do only use two-stroke engine oil for air-cooled engines.

Mixing

Ratio of mixture 40:1

Gasoline Two-stroke engine oil
1 litres 0.025 litres
2 litres 0.050 litres
5 litres 0.125 litres
10 litres 0.250 litres
  • Measure the oil quantity accurately as a small deviation of it has a large effect on the ratio of mixture in particular for small fuel quantities.
  • Do not change the ratio of mixture. This will lead to more residues of combustion, a higher fuel consumption, a decrease of output or damages to the engine.

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Mixing - 1

Mix petrol and oil in the supplied fuel mixing can (27).

  • Fuels have only a limited shelf-life. Outdated fuels and fuel mixtures may result in starting problems. Therefore, mix only that quantity of fuel which you can use within a month.
  • Only store fuels in containers approved and identified for this. Keep fuel containers in a dry and safe area.
  • Make sure that fuel containers are kept out of the reach for children.

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Mixing - 2

⚠️ Always apply the carrying strap (7) when working with this machine.

Adjust the carrying strap so that a convenient and safe carrying of the machine is ensured.

The quick acting closure (A) is located at the front.
The quick acting closure can be opened with the left hand.

The hip pad (B) should rest on the hip.

Immediately replace a damaged carrying strap.

Always keep your hands and feet at a safe distance to the cutting tool.

Working with the brush cutter

⚠️ Kickback – backstroke

When working with metal blades, a kickback of the whole machine or a sudden pull forwards may occur if fixed objects (trees, branches, stones or the like) are hit. Such a kickback occurs abruptly without advance warning and may result in loss of control of the machine and hazards to the operator and bystanders. There is a particular hazard in badly visible and overgrown areas.

20 To keep the control in case of kickback

  • Always hold the machine firmly with both hands when working.
  • Make sure that you have a safe stand. Keep your feet conveniently spread and be always alert to a possible kickback.
  • Do not overestimate your abilities and always keep your balance when working.
  • The cutting blade should have reached its full speed before cutting.

When brushcutting, stones and debris may be thrown up and cause serious injuries. Make sure that the protective hood is safely mounted.

⚠️ Failure to install rotating parts (cutting blades) correctly may result in severe accidents. Check the cutting blade for secure seating before starting your work.

Mowing

  • Incline the machine slightly forward and uniformly move it from right to left with adequate speed. This way, the cut material falls on the already mowed area.
  • Cut higher grass and denser growth in several passes. For this, shorten the upper portion of the material to be cut at first by moving the device to the right. Then, move the device to the left and cut the lower portion of the material to be cut.
  • When working on slopes mow in stripes. Mow a stripe parallel to the slope. Move then back on the mowed area and mow the next stripe.
  • Adjust the engine speed and cutting height to the prevailing conditions. If the engine speed is too low, scrub can entangle in the cutting tool or the cutting tool may get stuck in the scrub.

⚠️ If grass, scrub or other objects entangle in the cutting tool or if the device vibrates abnormally, immediately stop the engine and check the machine.

  • A blocked angular gear may cause coupling damage.
  • Never remove jammed material while the cutting blade is still rotating. Wait until the cutting blade stands still.
  • If the cutting blade is dull, broken or bent, replace it by a genuine spare part.

Working with the grasstrimmer

Trimming

  • Incline the machine slightly forward and uniformly move it from left to right with adequate speed.
  • You will get the best trimming results when you cut dry grass.
  • Do not guide the cutting thread directly at walls and paving stones. Otherwise it will prematurely wear off.
  • Cut higher grass and denser growth in several passes to prevent the spool head from becoming blocked.

⚠️ A blocked spool head may cause coupling damage.

- Adjust the engine speed and cutting height to the prevailing conditions. If the engine speed is too low, scrub can entangle in the cutting tool or the cutting tool may get stuck in the scrub.

⚠️ If grass, scrub or other objects entangle in the cutting tool or if the device vibrates abnormally, immediately stop the engine and check the machine.

  • A blocked spool head may cause coupling damage.
  • The cutting thread is after-running once the lawn trimmer has been cut off. Therefore wait until the thread is stationary before you restart the product.
  • When the thread spool is empty replace it by a genuine thread spool.

Thread follow-up

During trimming, the cutting thread wears (becomes shorter) or it may tear off so that it can no longer cut grass.

Shortly press the machine against solid ground. This will extend the cutting thread (by approx. 4 cm). If the cutting thread exceeds the maximum cutting diameter it will be shortened by the integrated knife within the protective hood.

Working with the hedge trimmer

Always keep your hands and feet at a safe distance to the cutting tool.

  • 2 bu can use the hedge trimmer to trim high and wide hedges as well as low hedges.
22 The hedge trimmer head (m) can be adjusted within a working angle range of 145°. Adjust the hedge trimmer head to the correct working position before starting your work.
Press the release lever (n) and the locking lever (o) and turn the hedge trimmer head to your desired position.
Leave hold of the release and locking levers. The hedge trimmer head engages.
  • Always hold the machine firmly with both hands when working.

• Best time for hedge trimming:

⇒ Leaved hedge: June and October
⇒ Conifer hedge: April and August
⇒ Quickly growing hedge: from May and then every 6

w e e k

  • Pay attention to breeding birds in the hedge. If so, put off hedge trimming or leave this area out.
  • The maximal diameter to cut depends on the wood's type, age, moisture and hardness.
Therefore cut very thick branches using branch shears to your desired length before trimming the hedge.
  • Due to its double sided knives the hedge trimmer can be guided forward and backward or by oscillating movements from one to another side.
  • At first cut the sides of the hedge and then the upper edge.
  • Cut the hedge from the bottom up.
    • ⊙ | 23 Cut the hedge in trapezium shape.
  • Stretch a guide over the complete length of the hedge when you want to shorten the upper edge of the hedge evenly.
  • Trim in several passes if you have to cut down a large portion of the hedge.

Working with the power pruner

⚠️ Kickback - backstroke

What is saw backstroke? Saw backstroke is the sudden strike upwards or backwards of the running power pruner in direction of the operator.

This happens when

  • the guide bar tip gets in contact with the sawing material (unintended) or other hard objects.
    — the saw chain is jammed at the guide bar tip.

The power pruner reacts uncontrolled and frequently causes heavy injuries of the operator.

How to avoid saw backstroke?

24 Always hold the power pruner firmly with both hands.
- Start cutting only with running saw chain.
- For better control saw with the lower edge of the guide bar. Place the power pruner as horizontally as possible when contacting wood.
- Never saw with the guide bar tip.
- Sawing with the upper guide bar edge may cause a saw backstroke if the saw gets jammed or hits a hard object in the wood.
• Always work with a sharp and stretched saw chain.

General conduct when pruning

  • 25 Keep bystanders away. The safety distance is 2.5-times the length of the branch to be cut, but at least 15 m.
  • Keep a safety distance of 10 m to overhead power lines.
  • Plan an escape route from falling branches in advance. This escape route must be free from obstacles to ensure retreating without danger.
  • Position yourself outside the range of falling branches.

Work instructions (saw techniques)

  • Do not cut thin branches or bosks. The power pruner is not suitable for those works.
  • Cut larger branches into several sections to avoid splintering and breaking.

  • Do not cut any branches where their diameter is greater than the cutting length of the device.

  • Do not stand directly underneath a branch to be cut.
  • Watch out especially for falling branches.
  • Also look out for branches snapping back.

Always wear a helmet in order to protect yourself against perches falling down.

Step cut

26 For horizontal branches without being top heavy The branch section falls down in a controlled manner without tipping over.

① Set the first cut from below, approx. one third of the branch diameter.
② The second cut is made on the same level as the first cut or moved further toward the inside (negative breaking step).
③ Remove the remaining branch section.

Step cut error!

27 If the cut is made offset toward the outside (positive breaking step) and exceeded, the power pruner can be pulled along.

Maintenance and cleaning

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Maintenance and cleaning - 1

Before each maintenance and cleaning work

  • Stop the engine.
  • Wait until the cutting device does not longer move.
  • Remove the spark plug connector.

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Maintenance and cleaning - 2

- Wear protective gloves in order to avoid injury to the hands.

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Maintenance and cleaning - 3

- Do not carry out maintenance work close to open flames. Risk of fire.

⚠️ Improper maintenance or any failure to eliminate faults before starting can cause operating trouble which can result in serious injuries and damages to the machine.

Maintenance and repair work other than those described in this chapter is only allowed to be carried out by service staff.

For maintaining and cleaning, removed security devices must unconditionally be mounted properly and proved again.

Only use genuine spare parts. Other than genuine parts may result in unpredictable damages and injury.

Maintenance

The cutting tool will not come to a standstill immediately after cut-off. Before starting any service work wait until all parts are stationary.

To guarantee a long and reliable usage of the product carry out the following maintenance works regularly.

Check the device for obvious defects such as

- loose fastening elements

  • worn or damaged components
    – deformed, broken or damaged cutting device
    – leaks from the fuel tank cap or fuel lines
  • correctly assembled and faultless covers and protective devices.

Before each use or after each impact or falling, this machine needs to be checked for damages and leakages.

① Necessary repair works or maintenance have to be carried out before using the machine.

Cleaning the air filter

Clean the air filter from dust and dirt on a regular basis to prevent

  • starting problems
    — loss of output,
    – too high fuel consumption.

Clean the air filter every 8 operating hours, or more frequently in dusty environments.

18 Put the choke lever to the position No prevent dirt from entering the carburetor.
28 Pull off the air filter cover (14).
Remove the air filter (15).
Wash the air filter in a luke warm soapy solution.
Do not puff/blow out dirt particles, otherwise there is a risk of eye injury.
Allow the air filter to dry well and reinsert it.

i Damaged air filters must be replaced without delay.

Cleaning/replacing the fuel filter

Check the fuel filter if required. A contaminated fuel filter restricts the fuel supply.

29 Open the tank cap (19) and pull the fuel filter (20) through the opening using a wire hook.
Slight contamination:
Pull the fuel filter from the fuel line and clean it in petroleum ether.
⇒ Bad contamination:
Replace the fuel filter.

Checking/replacing the spark plug

31 Use an insulated pair of tongs to press the spark plug against the engine body (away from the spark plug hole).

Put the ON/OFF switch to the position [1]. Pull the cranking rope.

i If there is no spark visible between the electrodes, the spark plug may be defective.

Silencer/exhaust outlet

32 Check the silencer (18) on a regular basis

i Clean the exhaust outlet on a regular basis.

Do not clean the silencer when the engine is hot. Danger of burning!

Lubri cate the ge arbox

33 / 34 / 35

i Lubricate the gearbox every 8 to 25 operating hours. Use SHELL ALVANIA RL3, for example, or an equivalent grease brand.

→ Put the grease gun onto the zerk fitting (61).
Force some grease into the zerk fitting.

Adjusting the carburetor (idle speed)

The carburetor is factory-set to the correct idle speed so that the correct fuel-air mixture is fed to the engine.

In the cases below the carburetor (idle speed) has to be corrected:

  • Speed too high (cutting tool continues to move in idle speed)
  • Erratic running or lack of acceleration (idle speed too low)
  • Adjustment to weather conditions and temperatures

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Adjusting the carburetor (idle speed) - 1

An incorrect carburetor adjustment results in severe engine damages. Do not continue working with the machine in such a condition.

i Contact a specialist workshop and have the carburetor adjustment done.

Maintenance of the brushcutter

Cutting blade

⚠️ Safe and efficient working is only possible with a correctly sharpened and intact cutting blade.

Therefore, check the cutting blade for dull edges, bents, cracks or other damages on a regular basis.

Have dull cutting blades sharpened by a specialist/service workshop.

Both sides of the cutting blade may be used. Turn round the cutting blade once and continue to work with the brushcutter until both sides of the cutting blade are dull-edged.

⚠️ Replace damaged cutting blades by new ones.

Maintenance of the grasstrimmer

Replacing the thread spool

36 Press on both locking tabs (j) on the thread spool holder (40) and remove the thread spool cover (41).
Remove the thread spool (39) from the thread spool holder.
Remove dirt and grass residues.
37 Thread the ends of the cutting threads of the new thread spool into the provided openings (k) in the thread spool holder (40).
Insert the thread spool together with the spring (42) in the thread spool holder (40). Make sure that the cutting threads are not caught and pull them approx. 9 cm out of the spool.
36 Put the thread spool cover (41) on the thread spool (39). The cutouts on the thread spool cover need to be aligned with the locking tabs (j). Press the thread spool cover down until in snaps into place.

Replacing the thread knife

38 Unscrew the screws and remove the old thread knife (43).

Screw on the new thread knife as shown.

Do not overtighten the screws.

Maintenance of the hedge trimmer

Check the hedge trimmer after each application for
— wear and tear, in particular sliding play of the cutting device
– Sufficient lubrication of the cutting device.

Adjusting the cutting device

Readjust the sliding play if cut material is clamped between the blades or the play has increased due to normal wearing of the cutting device after a longer period of use.

To obtain good cutting results the free motion between the blades and the sword must be correctly adjusted.

For this proceed as follows:

39 Loosen the nuts (E) on the top surface of the cutting device.
Slightly tighten the screws (F) on the underside (if required loosen them previously).
Turn the screw back anticlockwisely by a quarter up to a half turn.
Use a screwdriver to hold the screw and firmly tighten the nuts.
The sliding play is correctly adjusted if the washer under the screw head can just be freely moved back and forth by hand.
Lubricate the cutting device using environmental-compatible lubricating oil.

If the play is too small or insufficient lubrication, this may cause a great extent of heating and thus damage to the product.

Maintenance of the power pruner

Adjusting the chain lubrication

The chain lubrication is factory-set. Depending on the type of wood and working techniques the amount of oil may vary and has to be corrected.

40

Adjust the chain lubrication using the adjusting screw (I) which is located below the product.

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Adjusting the chain lubrication - 1

Anticlockwise turning large amount of oil (MAX) Clockwise turning small amount of oil (MIN)

The chain lubrication is correctly adjusted when the saw chain throws off small amounts of oil during operation.

Saw chain and guide bar

Saw chain and guide bar are exposed to a great extent of wearing. Replace the chain saw and the guide bar without any delay if their proper function is no longer ensured.

→ "Installing the guide bar and the chain saw".

Sharpening of saw chain

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Sharpening of saw chain - 1

You can only work safely and well with a sharp and clean saw chain. Damaged or incorrectly sharpened saw chains increase the risk of kickbacks.

The saw chain has to be sharpened if

→ only wood dust is thrown out instead of shavings
→ you have to press the chain saw through the wood during cutting
Inexperienced users: Have the saw chain sharpened by a specialist/service workshop.

If you sharpen the saw chain by yourself, note the values below and use the supplied round file. (Additional accessories are available from specialist shops.)

41/ 42/ 43

Saw chain type Oregon 91 P0
Round file ∅ 5,5 mm (7/32")
Depth gauge distance T 0,64 mm (.025")
Sharpening angle α25°
Breast angle β60°
Planing tooth length a min. 3 mm

Only remove a little amount of material when sharpening.

You can also sharpen your saw chain yourself by using our electric sharpener KSG 220 A (article-no.: 302360).

Cleaning the guide bar

44

  • Check and clean the oil outlets (G) of the guide bar and the guiding groove (H) on a regular basis.
  • Remove any burr using a flat file.
  • Turn round the guide bar after each chain exchange/sharpening to avoid single-side wearing.

i Immediately replace a damaged guide bar.

Chain wheel

The demand of the chain wheel is particularly great. Check regularly the teeth of the chain wheel for wear or damages.

11 Clean the chain wheel (56) and the guide bar fixing device using a brush.

A worn or damaged chain wheel reduces the durability of the saw chain and should therefore immediately be exchanged by the customer service.

Cleaning

i Clean the machine and its accessories thoroughly after each application so that the faultless function is kept.

  • Clean all movable parts on a regular basis.
  • Clean the case with a soft brush or a dry cloth.
  • Do not clean the machine under running water or using a high-pressure cleaner.
  • Do not use solvents (gasoline, alcohol, etc.) for plastic parts, otherwise such parts may be damaged.
  • Keep the handles free of oil and grease.

Water, solvents and polishing agents shall not be applied.

- 32 Make sure that the ventilation slots (i) for the engine cooling are free (risk of overheating).

Transport

ATIKA BF 31-4T - Transport - 1
