Frequently Asked Questions - WCU Weller

How to use the Weller WCU thermometer?
Place the hot tip of the soldering iron in contact with the thermocouple cross or the type K thermocouple. Wait for the temperature to stabilize (a few seconds) then read the displayed value. Make sure the device displays the ambient temperature before taking the measurement.
What are the measurement ranges of the WCU?
The thermocouple cross measures from 0°C to 400°C (32°F to 752°F). The type K thermocouple measures from -150°C to +1200°C (-302°F to +2192°F).
How to calibrate the WCU thermometer?
An auto-calibration with offset of the soldering irons is possible using a WXsmart or WX 1, WX 2, etc. station with compatible soldering irons and an RS232 cable. Refer to the manual for precise references.
What battery to use and how to replace it?
Use a 9V alkaline battery (E-block type). Replace it when the 'low battery' symbol appears. To ensure accuracy, use a quality battery such as Ansmann XPower.
How to maintain the WCU thermometer?
Clean the sensor ports with a soft cloth moistened with alcohol. Do not use thinner or gasoline. Recalibrate the sensor every 50 measurements to maintain accuracy.
What are the important safety instructions?
Avoid any contact with hot parts. Do not work on live parts. Use the device only in closed rooms at room temperature. Protect it from humidity and direct radiation.
Can I use the WCU with other brands of soldering irons?
The WCU is designed to measure the temperature of tips. It can be used with any compatible soldering iron, but auto-calibration is only possible with Weller stations and the soldering irons listed in the manual.
What to do if the measurement seems inaccurate?
First check the battery status: a low battery can distort measurements. Then clean the sensor contacts. If the problem persists, recalibrate the device or contact customer service.
How to dispose of the WCU thermometer at end of life?
Do not throw it away with household waste. In accordance with the WEEE directive (2012/19/EU), take it to a collection point for recycling of electronic devices.
Where to find the full manual of the WCU?
The manual is available for free download on notice-facile.com in PDF format. You can also request a translation into your language via the form on the website.
