Frequently Asked Questions - 810 Testo

How to turn on and off the Testo 810?
To turn on, briefly press the button. To turn off, press and hold the same button for 2 seconds until the screen turns off.
How to perform an infrared measurement?
Press and hold the button. A laser point appears for aiming. Release the button to hold the value (Hold mode).
How to change the batteries?
Slide the battery compartment cover downwards. Remove the used batteries and insert two new AAA 1.5 V batteries, respecting polarity. Close the cover.
How to set the emissivity?
In configuration mode (press and hold during startup), navigate with to the £ icon, then adjust the value from 0.20 to 0.99 with Mode. The default value is 0.95.
What do the Hi or Lo messages mean?
These messages indicate that the measured temperature is outside the authorized measurement range. Respect the ranges: infrared -30 to +300 °C, air -10 to +50 °C.
How to clean the Testo 810?
Clean the housing with a damp cloth (soapy water). Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals. The lens must be clean and free of condensation.
Why is infrared measurement inaccurate on metals?
Bare metals have low and uneven emissivity. To improve accuracy, apply a coating such as varnish or an emissive adhesive tape (ref. 0554 0051) to the surface being measured.
How to display maximum and minimum values?
Press the Mode button several times until Max or Min is displayed. To reset, press and hold until '----' appears.
Is the laser dangerous?
The Testo 810 is equipped with a class 2 laser (< 1 mW). Do not look directly into the beam. Avoid aiming at people's or animals' eyes.
How to activate the differential temperature Δt function?
In configuration mode, navigate to Δt and set it to ON. The device will then display the difference between the infrared temperature and the air temperature.

Adjustable functions

Unit of temperature: °C, °F

· Differential temperature t : OFF, ON
- Emission factor: £
- Auto off function: OFF, ON (instrument switches off automatically if no key is pressed for 10 minutes)

The emission factor has a default setting of 0.95. This is ideal for the measurement of non-metals (paper, ceramic, gypsum, wood, paints and varnishes), plastics and foodstuffs.

Because of their low or non-uniform emission factor, bright metals and metal oxides are of only limited use for infrared measurement. Coatings that increase the emission factor, e.g. paint or emission adhesive (0554 0051) must be applied to the object being measured.

Emission factors of various materials (typical values):

Material (temperature) £

Aluminium, bright rolled (170 °C) 0.04

Cotton (20 °C) 0.77

To ensure correct readings:

- Keep temperature and humidity sources which may falsify the measurement (e.g. hands) away from the sensor.

- Keep the lens clean and do not measure with foggy lenses.

- Keep the measuring range (the range between the instrument and the object being measured) and the surface of the object free of obstacles. There must be no particles of dust or dirt, no humidity (rain, steam) and no gases.

- If the ambient temperature changes (change of location, e.g. measurement indoors/outdoors), the instrument must be allowed to equalise for aprox. 15 minutes.

- The instrument has a lens (90 % value) of 6:1 (distance : measuring surface) + Opening diameter of the sensor (10mm / 0.39 in):

Distance Diameter of meas. surface Distance Diameter of meas. surface
