USER MANUAL BA 3284 SEVERIN

Before using the appliance, the user should read the following instructions carefully.

Connection to the mains supply

The appliance should only be connected to an earthed socket installed in accordance with the regulations. Make sure that the supply voltage corresponds with the voltage marked on the rating label. This product complies with all binding CE labelling directives.

Important safety instructions

Before the appliance is used, the main body including the power cord as well as any attachment fitted should be checked thoroughly for any defects or leakage. Should the appliance, for instance, have been dropped onto a hard surface, it must no longer be used: even invisible

damage may have adverse effects on the operational safety of the appliance.

The power cord should be regularly examined for any signs of damage. In the event of such damage being found, the appliance must no longer be used.

• Do not operate the appliance if excessive strain has been put on the connecting hose. Damage cannot always be detected from the outside; the entire unit should therefore be checked by a qualified technician before it is used again.

• Always place the appliance on a flat, level and heat-resistant surface during operation. Do not position the appliance on or near hot surfaces or open flames such as hot-plates or gas flames.

• Great care is necessary in using any electrical appliance, especially near children. Do not leave the appliance unattended while connected. Always remove the plug from the wall socket and place the iron back on its stand on the steam generator.

• When ironing is interrupted, the appliance must be replaced on its stand on the steam generator. The iron can also stand on its rear end.

• The appliance operates at very high temperatures. Do not touch any part of the appliance except the handle. Burns can occur from touching the hot parts of the housing or the sole plate and from hot water or steam. Do not allow steam to escape in the direction of anyone nearby.

• When operating the appliance, hold only by the handle.

• Do not attempt to iron or to smooth out wrinkles or creases from clothes by using the steam jet function while wearing them.

• Caution: The connecting hose may reach high temperatures during operation.

• Do not allow the power cord to touch hot surfaces. Do not coil the power cord round the appliance.

Always remove the plug from the wall

Filling with water

• The steam generator is equipped with a special anti-scale insert and is not therefore liable to the build-up of lime deposits.
  Before the steam function can be used, the water reservoir must be filled with

water as follows:

• Remove the reservoir.
• Lift out the anti-scale insert.
• Fill the reservoir with clean tap water, observing the 'Max' marking on the reservoir.
• Replace the anti-scale insert.

• Place the water reservoir into the steam generator.

• Once the water has been used up during ironing, the water-level warning light starts flashing. The sound of the pump increases as air is pumped instead of water. This is perfectly normal and no cause for concern. Re-fill the reservoir as described above. It is not necessary to switch off the appliance.

General information about ironing

Always check first whether a label with ironing instructions is attached to the article to be ironed.

• The meaning of the ironing symbols is as follows:

Synthetics

(low temperature)

Silk and wool

(medium temperature)

Cotton and linen

(high temperature)

• These markings can also be found on the temperature control knob of the iron in the form of dot symbols.
• Laundry to be ironed should be sorted according to the fabric ironing temperature. Follow the ironing symbols and start with the lowest temperature.
• When ironing highly sensitive fabrics, or if you are not sure about the fabric, you may carefully test-iron on a non-visible point, e.g. inside a seam. Always start with the lowest temperature.
• If the laundry is put into a dryer before ironing, the temperature should be adjusted to 'iron dry'. Very dry fabrics are difficult to iron.

Start up

Before it is used for the first time, the iron should be cleaned according to the instructions given in the paragraph General Care and Cleaning. This will result in the removal of possible dust particles from the sole plate and subsequently lessen the smell typically encountered when first switching on.

Ensure sufficient ventilation.

Steam output control

The steam output control is used to adjust the steam output. The selected steam output level is shown by means of one of the indicator lights on the steam output indicator display. When none of the lights are on, the steam function is switched off.

With a low temperature setting selected on the iron, the steam output level should be set to low as well.

To switch off the steam function for an extended period, keep the output control depressed for 4 seconds. The indicator light will show red, leaving only the iron switched on. The steam function can be re-activated by pressing the steam output control again.

Steam ironing

• Fill the water reservoir with clean tap water.
• Place the iron onto its stand and insert the plug into a suitable wall socket. The indicator light for maximum steam output on the steam output indicator display comes on. The main indicator light starts flashing green. Once the boiler has reached its operating temperature, an acoustic signal is heard and the main indicator light shows steady green.
• Set the temperature control knob to the required ironing temperature according to the ironing symbols.
• As the iron heats up, the indicator lamp on the iron will be on. It goes out once

the required ironing temperature is reached.

• Before starting to iron, the sole plate should be cleaned by passing it over a clean cotton cloth, while using the steam jet function; this helps to flush out any dirt residues or lint particles trapped inside the openings in the sole plate.
• When the steam jet button is depressed, the sound of the pump increases, as residual air is pumped out of the boiler. The water-level warning light shows red and starts flashing. The light will go out after approx. 30 seconds and steam will be emitted.
• Use the steam output control to select the required steam output.
• You can now start ironing.
• If, during ironing, the water reservoir becomes empty, simply re-fill it as described in the section 'Filling with water'.
• Replace the iron on its stand on the steam generator after use, and remove the plug from the wall socket.

Steam jet

When the steam jet button is depressed, jets of steam are emitted through the openings in the sole plate. This function can be very useful when removing stubborn creases or when ironing difficult or thick fabrics.

The steam jet function may also be used with the iron held vertically, to remove creases or wrinkles from fabrics.

Remarks:

• If the steam jet button is depressed before the required boiler temperature has been reached, a double acoustic signal is heard. The heating-up process of the boiler takes about one minute.
• If the steam jet button is depressed for a longer time, the temperature in the boiler will be reduced and there is a chance that hot water will be emitted through the sole plate together with the steam. Before this happens, an acoustic signal

will be heard indicating a reduced boiler temperature. Should this occur, release the steam jet button immediately to prevent water from being emitted and allow the boiler briefly to heat up again.

Automatic switch-off

The steam function will be automatically switched off and put into stand-by mode if it has not been used for approx. 15 minutes. However, it can be re-activated by simply pressing the steam jet button or the steam output control. The stand-by function is shown by the indicator light alternately flashing green and red.

Dry ironing

• Insert the plug into a suitable wall socket.
• Press the steam output control three times in order to switch off the steam function.
• If dry-ironing is required for a longer period of time, the boiler must be switched off by depressing and holding the steam output control for approx. 4 seconds. The indicator light will now show red.
• Set the temperature control knob to the required ironing temperature according to the ironing symbols.
• As the iron heats up, the indicator lamp on the iron is on. The lamp goes out once the required ironing temperature is reached.
• Replace the iron on its stand on the steam generator after use, and remove the plug from the wall socket.

General care and cleaning

• Before cleaning the appliance, ensure it is disconnected from the power supply and has cooled down completely.
• To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not clean the appliance with water and do not immerse it in water.
• Do not use abrasives or harsh cleaning solutions.
• If necessary, the appliance may be wiped

with a dry lint-free cloth.

Iron

• Starch, fat and other deposits on the sole plate may be removed with a woollen cloth soaked in a vinegar/water solution.
• In order to protect the clean sole plate, occasionally apply a small amount of paraffin to the warm plate, wiping it off with a woollen cloth.
• The steam outlet openings in the sole plate are cleaned by repeatedly pressing the steam jet button while holding the iron over a sink or a suitable container. Hot water and steam will be emitted through the openings in the sole plate. This will result in the removal of dust particles.

To empty any water remaining in the reservoir

After use, any remaining water must be removed from the reservoir.

• Remove the water reservoir.
• Lift out the anti-scale insert upwards.
• Pour out any remaining water through the filler opening.
• Replace the anti-scale insert.
• Place the reservoir back into the steam generator.

Anti-scale insert

Depending on the water quality in your area as well as frequency of use, the anti-scale insert should be replaced at regular intervals. Guidelines assuming 2-3 hours of use per week:

Soft water - after 6 months

Medium-hard water - after 3 months Hard water - after 6 weeks

Should you be unsure about the hardness of the water in your area, please enquire at the relevant local authority department.

If the anti-scale insert is empty, a new insert should be installed without delay. Although you will be able to use the steam generator

even without an anti-scale having been insert installed, lime deposits may build up on the heating element. It is therefore important to arrange for a replacement as soon as possible. Replacement inserts are available through the Severin-Service.

• Remove the plug from the wall socket.
• Remove the water reservoir.
• Lift out the anti-scale insert upwards.
• Fit the new anti-scale insert into the reservoir.
• Replace the reservoir in the steam generator.
• Insert the plug into a suitable wall socket.

Disposal

Do not dispose of old or defective appliances in domestic garbage; this should only be done through public collection points.

Guarantee

This product is guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of two years from the date of purchase. Under this guarantee the manufacturer undertakes to repair or replace any parts found to be defective, providing the product is returned to one of our authorised service centres. This guarantee is only valid if the appliance has been used in accordance with the instructions, and provided that it has not been modified, repaired or interfered with by any unauthorised person, or damaged through misuse.

This guarantee naturally does not cover wear and tear, nor breakables such as glass and ceramic items, bulbs etc. If the product fails to operate and needs to be returned, pack it carefully, enclosing your name and address and the reason for return. If within the guarantee period, please also provide the guarantee card and proof of purchase.
